Ironheart: Dominique Thorne-Led MCU Show Breaks The Mold With Bold New Disney+ Release Format
Image
How MCU’s Ironheart Embraced A New Release Format ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Ironheart has landed on Disney+, bringing a new chapter to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike recent shows that stretched into nine episodes, this one sticks to the earlier Marvel TV approach, making it feel like a bridge between the franchise’s past and future.

Ironheart feels more compact and focused with Agatha All Along and Daredevil: Born Again switching up the format. It’s also one of the last few titles from the older Marvel Television playbook before the studio fully embraced its newer structure.

Where To Watch Ironheart?

According to Screenrant, the show dropped its first three episodes on Disney+ in one go, and a week later, the final three will arrive together, letting audiences wrap up the series within two weeks. This is a shift from Marvel’s usual week-by-week style, and surprisingly, it might suit the story.

Prison Break Trivia: Why Michael Scofield Was Really Called “Fish” Inside Fox River
Image
Prison Break Character Nickname “Fish” Explained (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Michael Scofield was not someone people called by his name inside Fox River, as most of the time, inmates stuck with calling him “Fish.” In that prison, newcomers were all given the same label, and “Fresh Fish” was a term used for those who had only just landed behind bars. As a result, Michael, being new and unfamiliar with the rough world of prison, got tagged early, and the name stuck even when others came in after him.

Michael Scofield’s Prison Break Plan and Tattoo

Michael was always different from the rest. Unlike the hardened criminals around him, he chose to enter prison, and his plan wasn’t about serving time. It was to break his brother out. Lincoln Burrows was on death row, and Michael had a single purpose – to get him out before the clock ran out.

From ‘Halloween’ to ‘The Thing’: John Carpenter’s 10 Scariest Masterpieces Ranked
Image
The Master of Horror has officially been immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and frankly, it’s about damn time. John Carpenter, the man behind some of the most influential, inventive, and flat-out terrifying horror films ever made, now has a star to match the impact he’s had on the genre (and cinema as a whole). Whether it’s masked killers in suburbia, shape-shifting aliens in Antarctica, or reality-bending nightmares dripping with cosmic dread, Carpenter’s work has long lived where horror and cool collide.

But before all that – before Halloween changed the face of slashers and The Thing made us scared of our friends. Carpenter was a film school upstart with a Super 8 camera and a knack for doing things his own way. He studied at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, where he co-wrote and scored the Oscar-winning short The Resurrection of Broncho Billy. His first...

Five Road Trip Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
Summer is winding to a close, though the blistering sun has not yet received the memo. That means the final days of vacationing or summer road trips are in order. Of course, horror has taught us the myriad of ways that the open road can induce abject terror and stress; flat tires are the least of your summer worries in horror.

Films like The Hitcher, Near Dark, and Splinter highlight how car troubles, creepy rest stops, and seedy motels don’t compare to humanity’s worst- human or otherwise- prowling the highways.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to road trip horror movies. These five titles exploit our travel anxieties by pitting their protagonists against vampires, cannibals, psychopaths, and the devil himself over vast stretches of highway.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Match #1: Michin def. Jaida Parker The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

After competing in the Women’s Nxt North American Championship Ladder Match, Michin and Jaida Parker competed in what turned into a high-stakes singles matchup. Michin was determined to silence the newcomer Parker after all of the smack talk, but Ms. Parker quickly proved that she could back it all up by using her brutal strikes and innovative offense. Parker was in full control when Michin’s O.C. partners, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, appeared to provide some support. Parker went for a steel chair but she was thwarted by Anderson, allowing Michin to roll her up and score the win.

Is Candy Cane Lane Based On A Real Place? Eddie Murphy Movie Inspiration Explained
Image
Eddie Murphy's Candy Cane Lane is based on a real place in El Segundo, California known for its extravagant Christmas light displays. The real Candy Cane Lane is a cooperative effort among neighbors, unlike the high-stakes competition portrayed in the movie. The film's screenwriter, Kelly Younger, grew up on the actual Candy Cane Lane and wanted to portray a warm climate Christmas instead of the typical snowy settings.

Eddie Murphy's Candy Cane Lane is set on a street where Christmas lights are taken to an extreme level, and the film's writer, Kelly Younger, based this location on a real-world slice of holiday spirit. The Prime Video movie features a massive decorating contest and centers around a particularly magical lawn ornament that brings "The Twelve Days of Christmas" to life. Though the real Candy Cane Lane doesn't involve vengeful elves and runaway Lords a-Leaping, it is an actual place that Christmas lovers can visit.

Great Directors Who've Only Made One Film
Image
Filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard, John Ford, and Michael Curtiz rank among the most prolific directors of all time, each amassing well over 100 directorial credits throughout their careers. Auteurs of this caliber constantly produce films that earn critical acclaim and achieve success at the box office, allowing them to continue working on subsequent projects.

On the other end of the spectrum, some potentially great directorial talents only received the opportunity to make one film. For reasons such as poor initial reviews, abysmal box office performances, or untimely deaths, some filmmakers only directed a single movie.

The Pope’s Exorcist: The True Story of Father Gabriele Amorth
Image
In our never-ending (and sort of morbid) fascination for watching movies based on real-life events, horror is always on the top. It's weird, but scary movies are more effective if they are based on something that befell someone real. Filmmakers tend to jump the shark and lose credibility by staying away from realism, and even so, people give those movies more credit in the "how scary can it get" scale.

Almost 50 years after The Exorcist was released, audiences are still trying to come up with a "based on a true story" argument for it. The film was actually based on William Peter Blatty's novel that was loosely inspired by a true story of possession in the 1940s that changed the life of Robbie Mannheim, the actual victim. But again, based on a true story? Not likely.

However, William Friedkin, the director of the film, presented his argument for this...

This month we’re talking to Lindsay Traves, a horror/Batman/lotsa stuff expert who has bylines all over town, including Comics Gaming Magazine, Bloody Disgusting, Grim Journal, and of course right here at Daily Dead. She’s also stepped into co-hosting duties for The Pod and the Pendulum, a “weekly podcast covering every horror movie franchise, one movie and one episode at a time.”

For this month’s movie, Traves finally got me to dive into a film with a rabid following and a Gif that serves as Thirst Twitter’s answer to “do you read Sutter Cane?” I’m talking, of course, about Adam Wingard’s 2014 action/slasher hybrid, The Guest. The film follows a mysterious soldier named David (Dan Stevens), who shows up at the doorstep of the Peterson family claiming to be a friend of their late son Caleb,...

NYC Weekend Watch: 1995, Chantal Akerman, The Women Behind Hitchcock
Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Presented by Screen Slate, “1995: The Year the Internet Broke” includes Ghost in the Shell, Hackers, Johnny Mnemonic, and more.

It’s the final weekend of a Dušan Makavejev retrospective.

2020 Independent Spirit Awards nominations: Full list of Indie Spirit nominees in all categories
The 2020 Independent Spirit Awards nominations were announced Thursday, November 21. So who made the cut at these kudos, which celebrate the best in American independent films? Scroll down to see the full list of nominees for the 2020 Indie Spirits. Remember, only American-made movies with budgets under $20 million were eligible for consideration.

These Spirit contenders were decided by nominating committees that included film critics, film programmers, producers, directors, writers, cinematographers, editors, actors, past nominees and winners, and members of Film Independent’s Board of Directors.

Winners will be chosen by all of Film Independent’s eligible members, including industry insiders and any movie fans who sign up for membership starting at $95 per year.

These awards have come to be a significant preview of the Oscars as the motion picture academy embraces more independent films. Five of the last six Spirit champs for Best Feature went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

2020 Independent Spirit Awards Nominees: ‘Marriage Story,’ ‘Uncut Gems,’ and More
Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Azhy Robertson in Marriage Story (2019)
The nominations for the 35th Independent Spirit Awards have been announced, and it was a big morning for “The Lighthouse” and “Uncut Gems.” The annual indie awards ceremony is presented by Film Independent and takes place the day before the Academy Awards on the beach in Santa Monica, California. The Spirit Awards have become known over the last decade for showcasing nominees that are a mix of underdog films and higher-profile awards contenders.

It’s important to note the Indie Spirit Awards has a budget ceiling of $22.5 million, meaning any movie made for more than this amount is ineligible for nominations. For this reason, Martin Scorsese’s Netflix-backed “The Irishman” was not eligible for 2020 nominations (the film had a budget north of $150 million). Netflix’s other top Oscar contender, Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” is eligible for Spirit Awards and landed a Best Feature nomination. As has become common over the last several years,...

“We Can Be Heroes”: On Jane The Virgin and Invisibility in Media
I grew up with telenovelas. I lived in Mexico during my formative years, and telenovelas were appointment viewing, with my friends and I faithfully gathering after school to watch the latest episodes. They had wonderful and outlandish names and dealt with cheating spouses, long-lost siblings, lucrative business deals, and a whole lot of evening gowns worn inside the house. Through those telenovelas, we saw that we could be anything we wanted to be when we grew up: rancheras who had to keep our land away from dastardly uncles; evil stepmothers with heavy, gaudy earrings; romantic heroes with two, three, even four different love interests; nuns and time travelers and high school women. We were inspired, and our imaginations ran wild with possibilities for our future lives. Telenovelas, in all their hyper-stylized dramatic storytelling, taught me that, as a young Latina, I could be anything I wanted.

When I moved back to the United States,...

Tom Ellis in Lucifer (2016)
DC's 'Lucifer' TV Show Adds Lina Esco as Demon Mazikeen
Tom Ellis in Lucifer (2016)
Fox and DC Comics have brought on Lina Esco to star in their Lucifer pilot, just one week after they cast actor Tom Ellis as the title character. Lina Esco is playing Mazikeen, a fierce demon who takes the form of a beautiful young woman. In the comics, Mazikeen serves as Lucifer's best friend, bodyguard and occasional lover. In the pilot, the character will be known as Maze.

The plot follows Lucifer, who, after growing bored of ruling over hell, decides to abandon his post and head to Los Angeles, where he finds amusement in helping the L.A.P.D. punish criminals. The earlier version of the pilot script also had Lucifer coming to L.A., but instead of punishing criminals, he opens a piano bar dubbed Lux. This piano bar aspect of the story has since been abandoned. The character first originated in Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics,...

Lucifer Pilot Adds Lina Esco As 'Mazikeen'
It seems ol' Scratch will have some company when he relocates to a slightly cooler climate. Deadline report that Cane actress Lina Esco has been cast alongside Tom Ellis in Fox's Lucifer, playing a character named Maze (almost certainly Mazikeen from the comics), who is described as "Lucifer’s best friend... a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman." Esco has appeared in CSI and the Heroes webseries Heroes: Destiny, as well as co-writing, directing and starring in the independent film, Free The Nipple. The pilot will be directed by Len Wiseman (the Total Recall remake, Underworld), who will also executive produce along with Tom Kapinos, Jerry Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman. The original logline for the show was pretty similar to the comic series, and had Lucifer growing tired with his infernal responsibilities and relocating to La where he opened an exclusive piano bar called Lux. Now...
