No comic book character as prominent as Spider-Man has had as many major actors walk through the role in the 21st century. Well, okay, technically Batman has had ... five? But mostly in cameos, and, you know what? That's beside the point. Three stars, each with multiple movies under their belts in just a couple decades, is a pretty rare thing to see. Of course, with so many re-castings, there were also plenty of actors who nearly played the wall-crawler but didn't.

Heath Ledger, for example, was considered early on for Sam Raimi's take on the character. Then, years later, actors like Timothée Chalamet and Asa Butterfield were up for the part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Tom Holland ultimately snagged it. And when "The Amazing Spider-Man" was in early development, both Josh Hutcherson and Alden Ehrenreich were in the running before Andrew Garfield landed the role of Peter Parker.

Those pursuing acting careers in Hollywood seek out as many auditions as they can. The roles and projects they find themselves reading for vary in scale, whether it be a bit part on a network sitcom or a character in a major film franchise, along with everything in between. The film is Modìgliani: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, based on the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. Set in Paris in 1916, the story follows three days in the artist’s wild and troubled life. Depp isn’t just directing, he’s fighting to reclaim a career that, for a while, seemed completely out of reach.

“Listen, they’ve said all kinds of things out there in the world about me, and it doesn’t bother me. I’m not running for office,” Depp told the Telegraph. “It literally stopped in a millisecond, like, while I was doing the movie. They said we’d like you to resign. But what was really in my head was they wanted me to retire.“

When asked how he responded to that “request” at the moment, Depp said, “F*** you. There’s far too many of me to kill. If you think you can hurt me more than I’ve already been hurt you’re gravely mistaken.

Derek A.E. Fuhrman, a songwriter who co-penned American Idol winner Philip Phillips’ hit “Gone, Gone, Gone” and worked with acts including O.A.R., Goo Goo Dolls, Five for Fighting and Kygo, has died. He was 44.

A family rep told Deadline that Fuhrman died June 27 of oral cancer in Nashville.

Fuhrman started in the music business while attending the University of Delaware, where he fronted a band called Omnisoul, later renamed The Crash Motive. The group enjoyed regional success and ultimately signed with Sony BMG, recording an album and doing national tours. Some of the band’s music was used in films, TV and video games.

Transitioning to a solo career in Los Angeles and later Nashville, Fuhrmann penned a string of award-winning songs, most notably co-authoring “Gone, Gone, Gone” with Season 11 American Idol winner Phillips, which went double-platinum and topped Billboard’s Adult Alternative and Adult Contemporary charts...

Marvel Comics has unfortunately found itself in the midst of another controversy with a former creator, as artist José Villarrubia has accused the publisher of “ripp[ing] off” a classic Spider-Manimage that he contributed to, in a way that he claims surpasses a reference and ventures into straight up “plagiarism” territory.

As reported by Popverse, Villarrubia’s complaint stems from a nearly-identical Spider-Man cover produced by another artist, Tyler Kirkham, which was intended as an “homage” to the earlier piece.

Though Kirkham’s version credits the original artists, John Romita Sr. and Jr., it does not cite Villarubia’s contribution, and according to Villarubia, the problem runs deeper than that.

The award-winning colorist and designer, José Villarrubia, has started an online debate over the difference between comic book homages and plagiarism after he posted on social media about an Amazing Spider-Man comic book variant cover by Tyler Kirkham that he felt went beyond homaging the original cover by John Romita Jr. (colored by Villarrubia), after Villarrubia saw an advertisement online for an upcoming book about Kirkham's Marvel art that used the variant cover to advertise for the book.

Homages, of course, have always existed, but they have become a major part of the comic book industry in more recent years, as the number of variant covers for every issue of any given comic book has exploded, with certain publishers routinely publishing at Least four variant covers for any given comic book, so naturally, with an increased need for cover art ideas, homages have become very popular, with Marvel even...

2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home brought fans a team-up they never expected to see on the big screen, with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning as their takes on the iconic web-slinging hero from Sam Raimi's trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man movies, respectively.

Though both actors were deliberately kept out of all marketing in the build-up to the film's release, their involvement was one of the McU's worst-kept secrets. Maguire and Garfield ended up having fairly substantial roles in No Way Home once they showed up, but this may not have been the case if a certain unnamed individual had their way.

While speaking to Collider, director Jon Watts revealed that an idea that was pitched from "one unspoken person" was to have Garfield and Maguire's Spideys swing by for what would have been little more than cameo appearances during the final battle.

The Marvel superhero franchise that started it all is headed back to theaters, but with a very exciting twist. The original Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire will be playing in theaters later this year, along with an extended version of the beloved second installment.

Per Variety, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy is headed back to theaters starting Sept. 26. The special presentation includes Spider-Man 2.1, the extended cut of what is widely regarded as the best movie in the franchise. The extended 4K version of the film will play in theaters for the first time. Spider-Man will play on Sept. 26, Spider-Man 2.1 on Sept. 27, and Spider-Man 3 will hit theaters on Sept. 28. Fortunately, those who miss out on the three-day event will be able to catch encore screenings starting Oct. 3. Fathom Entertainment, who are collaborating with Sony Pictures on the Spider-Man re-release, shared an official statement:

“The success of ‘Spider-Man...

With great power comes great re-releasability. The original “Spider-Man” trilogy, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, is webbing its way back to theaters once again, with Fathom Entertainment setting fall event screenings in collaboration with Sony Pictures.

Notably, the event also includes a 4K edition of the extended cut of “Spider-Man 2,” titled “Spider-Man 2.1.” This marks the first theatrical release of that version of the superhero sequel, which includes extended and additional scenes.

The engagement begins on Sept. 26 with screenings of “Spider-Man,” with “Spider-Man 2.1” following on Sept. 27 and “Spider-Man 3” on Sept. 28. An encore presentation comes the following weekend, with the trilogy entries respectively playing on Oct. 3, Oct. 4 and Oct. 5. Tickets will be available on July 25.

This September, Amazing Spider-Man #11, part of Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz and John Romita Jr.'s hit current run, is also the milestone 975th issue of the long-running series.

To help celebrate, superstar artist Lee Bermejo will draw a variant cover for each issue of Amazing Spider-Man starting with #11 and ending with next year's 1000th issue, Amazing Spider-Man #36. The 25 covers will depict key events in Spider-Man's history, starting with his groundbreaking origin and first encounters with his most iconic supervillains.

Award-winning and Eisner-nominated artist Lee Bermejo is an industry standout, acclaimed for his hyper-detailed, breathtaking style. We'll see him take on Spider-Man's past, present and future by spotlighting the hero's greatest stories, from his foundational adventures to modern classics.

Recently, Marvel announced that Amazing Spider-Man #11 would be kicking off a dynamic new era in the history of the wallcrawler when Spider-Man is suddenly split into Two Spider-Men, one of whom will be going on a dramatic cosmic adventure, while the other Spider-Man will be tackling Earthbound dilemmas.

Jon Bernthal is officially back in the Marvel big leagues — and this time, he’s bringing his war to the world of Spider-Man. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting today that Bernthal has joined Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the latest Marvel and Sony collaboration starring Tom Holland and directed by Shang-Chi filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton. The film is set to begin shooting in England this summer and will hit theatres on July 31, 2026.

One of the most acclaimed writers in Amazing Spider-Man history was J. Michael Straczynski, the popular film and TV writer, who wrote the series from 2001 through the end of "One More Day" in 2007. Now, almost twenty years after he left the wallcrawler, Straczynski is returning to Spider-Man for a new miniseries.

Following his initial return to Spidey in July's Spider-Man and the Sinister Sixteen one-shot in July (which is part of Straczynski's series of offbeat one-shots featuring unlikely pairings within the Marvel Universe), Straczynski will return to the pages of Amazing Spider-Man for the five-issue miniseries, Amazing Spider-Man: Torn, launching in October with art by Pere Pérez, along with a first issue cover by superstar artist Adam Hughes. The series will be set in the past in a very specific point in Spider-Man history.

Russell Crowe's new thriller, Nuremberg, has received a release date. Written and directed by James Vanderbilt – known for writing Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man, Independence Day: Resurgence, and several Scream movies – the upcoming thriller tells the true story of the trials conducted by the Allied powers to prosecute the defeated Nazi leadership in Germany after World War II. In addition to Crowe, its star-studded ensemble cast includes Rami Malek, Leo Woodall, Michael Shannon, Richard E. Grant, Colin Hanks, John Slattery, and many more.

A Johnny Depp movie that some of his fans might not even know exists is about to leave Hulu. Minamata will depart the streaming service in July.

Depp fans will have until July 7 to watch Minamata before the 2022 biopic about photojournalist W. Eugene Smith is removed from Hulu. Depp portrays Smith, often described as "perhaps the single most important American photographer in the development of the editorial photo essay," in Minamata, which chronicles his documenting of the effects of mercury poisoning on the citizens of Minamata, Kumamoto, Japan.

While the biopic was a box office disappointment, grossing less than $1 million worldwide off a $13 million budget, the movie was largely well-received by critics. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Minamata holds an approval rating of 78%, based on 80 reviews, with the audience score even higher, at 92%. It’s been over a year since the first images of Nuremberg were released, and now the political thriller starring Russell Crowe, Rami Malek, and Michael Shannon just got another exciting look. Sony Pictures has announced its acquisition of Nuremberg and also released another image from the film, which can be found below. The studio has also confirmed plans to release Nuremberg in theaters nationwide on November 7 later this year. The film was written and directed by James Vanderbilt, who is best known for his work as a scribe on Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man movies and for working on the Scream horror franchise. Leo Woodall, who starred in The White Lotus Season 2 and recently led Apple TV+’s Prime Target series, will also star in the film.

Rami Malek started the year strong with his work on The Amateur, the unorthodox spy thriller with Laurence Fishburne that exceeded expectations at the box office.

Joe Kelly's current run on Amazing Spider-Man has just finished its first arc, which also marked the first Spider-Man storyline drawn by superstar artist, Pepe Larraz, best known for his work on the X-Men titles. The other ?main" artist on the series, John Romita Jr., is about to start his first arc on the book this week with a story featuring the Black Cat. After his DC Studios Sgt. Rock film fell through, director Luca Guadagnino is moving fast on his next project and is eyeing stars like Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown) for lead roles. Guadagnino has become one of the most acclaimed and in-demand directors working today, and in 2024, he had two critically acclaimed films hit theaters, Challengers and Queer. The busy filmmaker has several projects lined up, including a remake of American Psycho and the previously planned DC superhero movie that was put on hold due to shooting conflicts. However, Guadagnino has found his next project, one that is building momentum quickly.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guadagnino has signed to direct Amazon MGM's Artificial, a drama about the artificial intelligence company OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who was fired in 2023 only to be rehired in a matter of days. Garfield is being eyed to play Sam Altman.

Lilo & Stitch recently wrapped up its second weekend in theaters, and the film is collecting trophies at the box office after passing another handful of iconic movies. After earning another $63 million at the domestic box office this weekend, Lilo & Stitch now sits at a domestic total of $280 million. When paired with its $330 million haul from international markets, this is enough to help the film reach the $610 million mark globally. This domestic total is enough to push Lilo & Stitch past The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), the superhero film starring Andrew Garfield that cost $230 million to make. Lilo & Stitch is now inside the top 130 highest-grossing films ever domestically, and it will look to pass Twilight, Hunger Games, and Dune sequels in the coming days.
