2073 (Asif Kapadia; Venice)
Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Asif Kapadia returns with what appears to be his most ambitious feature yet. Billed as a documentary thriller set in a dystopia 50 years into the future, 2073 borrows inspiration from Chris Marker’s La Jetée, in which a time-traveler attempted to save humanity after an apocalyptic World War III. The Oscar-winning director, primarily known for capturing intimate portraits of sports...

"I am not used to having my picture taken, nor am I confident in my visual, so the option of refusing the offer crossed my mind. But! You only live once! At long last, we now have at least one festival premiere set for one of our most-anticipated films of the year. Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Serpent’s Path, a remake of his superb, bad-vibes 1998 thriller that stars Damien Bonnard, Mathieu Amalric, Ko Shibasaki, and Drive My Car‘s Hidetoshi Nishijima, is now set for a premiere as part of San Sebastián Film Festival’s Official Selection.
Taking place September 20-28, the lineup also features the latest from Edward Berger, Gia Coppola, Costa-Gavras, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Mike Leigh, Diego Lerman, Joshua Oppenheimer, and François Ozon. While we could see Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Serpent’s Path pop up at other fall fests, it’s exciting to know it’s finally seeing the light of day.

Safe to say few movies this year engender more excitement than Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Serpent’s Path, a remake of his superb, bad-vibes 1998 thriller. Though an expected Cannes debut didn’t come to pass, the film releases in France on June 14; we now have a trailer that shows the known cast members with the pleasant surprise of Drive My Car‘s Hidetoshi Nishijima, and though enthusiasts of the original will spot bare bones of its revenge plot, quick shots imply scenes and scenarios not in Kurosawa’s original. News of U.S. acquisition already feels overdue.
Here’s the synopsis: “An intense desire for revenge fills Albert Bacheret: his daughter Marie. This father, exalted by violence, joins forces with Sayoko, to find and kill the culprits one by one. But at the same time, Sayoko leads her own mission of revenge which risks turning against Albert at any moment… Sayoko Mijima,...

Vengeance on a Wet Afternoon: Baetens Prepares a Fatal Reckoning in Grim Debut
Home is most certainly not where the heart is in When It Melts, the directorial debut of Belgian actor Veerle Baetens, adapted from the celebrated novel by Lize Spit. Baetens has long been a recognizable force in Belgian cinema over the past two decades, appearing in slick genre fare, like Erick Van Looy’s Loft (2008), Robin Pront’s The Ardennes (read review) and Oliver Masset-Depasse’s Mothers’ Instinct (2018), while most renowned for Felix Van Groeningen’s searing 2013 drama The Broken Circle Breakdown (read review). “For me there’s something so magical about the show because it doesn’t traffic in cynicism,” declares Josh Gad about his passion project “Central Park,” the animated musical comedy series that he co-created, co-writes and stars in. Funnily enough, the same can also be said about romantic comedy “Wolf Like Me,” Gad’s other TV project this past season on which he stars opposite Isla Fisher. Both projects feature Gad at his most lovable, showing once again how good he is at portraying endearingly quirky and unvarnished characters. They also naturally reflect his inclination to work on projects that provide much needed levity during some particularly challenging times. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
In Peacock’s “Wolf Like Me,” Gary (Gad) is a single father living in Adelaide, Australia with his 11-year-old daughter Emma (Ariel Donoghue), both still grieving the death of Emma’s mother. They encounter Mary (Fisher), a reclusive,...

“She is Alone” is the first feature film of Natsuko Nakagawa. The young filmmaker, who studied cinematic arts and contemporary psychology, tells the story of the suicidal girl Sumiko. Her destructive traits and revenge fantasies cause a lot of chaos within the social construct that goes by the name “high school”.
“She is Alone” is screening at Nippon Connection
After losing her mother to suicide, Sumiko tries to kill herself, too. But the attempt fails and she is under the suspicion of her father, friends, and teachers from then on. Everybody feels responsible and Sumiko is surrounded by an overbearing network of people. “She is Alone” reveals the hypocrisy of this network.
The female lead is characterized by apathy. Having come back from the edge of death, Sumiko spends her days aimlessly as she begins to blackmail her classmate Hideaki, who is dating a teacher at school. Akari Fukunaga (“Unten...

An international industry jury said, “We really want to see the special world that director Meikeminne Clinckspoor has created. We thought producer Katleen Goossens was very well prepared with her presentation, and both she and Meikeminne also told us about the heart of the story not just the plot. The true meaning and value of friendship and family relationships often greatly varies between everyone, even those who are extremely close and vow to protect each other through any harrowing situation, no matter what happens. But it isn’t until people are erroneously placed into a challenging circumstance that they should never have been involved in that their true loyalties and connections are truly tested. That process of figuring out who you can actually rely on during life’s toughest challenges is grippingly presented in director Erik Van Looy’s new psychological thriller, ‘The Loft,’ which is a gratifying remake of his original 2008 Belgian crime mystery drama, ‘Loft.’ ‘The Loft’ follows five [ Read More ]

For the third weekend in a row, American Sniper is going to easily take the top spot at the box office. Even with the Super Bowl monopolizing attention on Sunday, Sniper should still easily add at least $30 million over the three-day period.Among the weekend's new releases, found footage time travel movie Project Almanac should provide decent counterprogramming for teen moviegoers, while Black or White and The Loft will be lucky to earn a combined $10 million.Through 13 days in wide release, American Sniper has already earned $213.4 million. This weekend, it expands to an additional 180 locations, which brings its total count to 3,885; that's a new record for an R-rated movie, ahead of the record that Sniper set last weekend. On fantastic word-of-mouth, the movie dropped a very light 28 percent last weekend. With tough competition from the Super Bowl on Sunday, a similar drop this weekend is out of the question. Still,...

Remaking his own thriller Loft from 2008, Belgian director Eric Van Looy makes his English language debut with The Loft, which sees a group of five married men, made up of Karl Urban, Wentworth Miller, Matthias Schoenaerts (who reprises his role from the original), James Marsden, and Modern family's Eric Stonestreet sharing a secret penthouse where they indulge their deepest, extra marital fantasies. Of course, this arrangement doesn't stay happy for long, and when the body of unidentified woman is found, the finger pointing and backstabbing begins. The first trailer certainly comes with an unbearable air of tension, with a good central mystery feeding it. Check out the trailer below. Released: 23rd January 2015 (U.S.)/ ? (Irl/U.K.)...

“Universal Pictures’ The Loft, originally scheduled for release on August 29, 2014, is now undated,” the studio wrote in June of this year. What did they do with the movie? Well, they sold it off to Open Road Films, and now, surprise, it’s coming out in a month. So that means, All the marketing materials are here now, including a trailer, a poster, and a motion poster. Yippee. "Welcome to the Loft! It's our own private oasis!" That means it's basically douchebag headquarters. The film is about five married asshole friends who get their own penthouse so they can have all their covert affairs in one place without fuss or muss. But something goes awry, as one of their visitors is mysteriously killed and then it’s not "bros before hos" anymore. Uh oh. The psychological thriller stars Karl Urban, James Marsden, Wentworth Miller, Eric Stonestreet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Isabel Lucas, Rachael Taylor,...

City of Neon Lights: Marie’s Debut a Soundtrack Assisted Cliché
How the title Paris Countdown was decided upon to stand as the English language translation of Le Jour Attendre (Day Wait) is the first of many unnecessary questions to ask while watching Edgar Marie’s directorial debut, a revenge thriller meant to be a pulse pounding high octane endeavor, filled with car chases, violent showdowns, double crossings, vaguely relayed female characters in distress, and a thumping soundtrack.
Milan (Olivier Marchal) and Victor (Jacques Gamblin) are best friends and co-owners of a Parisian nightclub, Le Sound. Unfortunately, they’re in considerable debt, and Milan gets them involved in a drug trafficking transaction that gets horribly botched in Mexico. Tortured, they agree to squeal against their liaison, Serki (Carlo Brandt), who gets sentenced to six years in prison. Upset and traumatized, Victor vows never to speak with Milan again. Unfortunately, Serki is unfathomably psychotic,...

One of the big breakout performers of 2012 is looking likely to be the first major Belgian movie star since Audrey Hepburn (yep, she was born in Belgium) -- Matthias Schoenaerts. The 34-year-old has been acting for nearly two decades, but finally exploded in 2012 thanks to acclaimed back-to-back performances in the Oscar-nominated "Bullhead" and opposite Marion Cotillard in Jacques Audiard's celebrated Cannes drama "Rust & Bone." And as you might expect with a one-two punch like that, and for a multi-lingual actor like Schoenaerts, Hollywood has come calling, with the actor lining up several U.S. roles, and more sure to come. We sat down with Schoenaerts last week ahead of the BFI London Film Festival premiere of "Rust & Bone" to find out a little more about his English-language debut films, as well as one high-profile picture he didn't end up making. First up is "Loft," a remake of the Flemish-language.

Erik Van Looy's English-language remake of his own 2008 Belgian infidelity thriller, "Loft," has been acquired by Joel Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment. According to Vlaamse Film's Facebook announcement, distribution will go through Dark Horse's WB output deal, even though Silver has moved on to Universal. Wesley Strick adapted Bart DePauw's script about five married friends who share a loft where they bring their mistresses. When an unknown dead woman is found in the loft, the friends suspect each other of murder. The philandering husbands are played by Wentworth Miller, James Marsden, Karl Urban, Eric Stonestreet and Matthias Schoenaerts ("Bullhead," "Rust and Bone" and the original "Loft"), while Rhona Mitra, Isabel Lucas, Rachael Taylor, Margarita Levieva and Kristin Lehman tackle their wives and mistresses. The film was produced by Anonymous Content and Belgium's Woestijnvis. Executive producers are...

Five friends. Five keys. One loft. And one dead body. Uh oh. That’s the premise of Erik Van Looy’s “Loft”, a Hollywood remake of the 2008 Belgian movie “The Loft” that was also directed by Erik Van Looy. The original was written by Bart De Pauw, with “Cape Fear’s” Wesley Strick taking over in the American remake. So if you’re a fan of the original, you can blame it on the guy who directed the movie you loved for this remake. Quite the dilemma, eh? (Fyi: The film was already remade once already by the Dutch in 2010.) In the film, five married friends (including Karl Urban, Wentworth Miller, James Marsden, and “Modern Family’s” Eric Stonestreet) agree to share a private loft with which to engage in various forms of shenanigans (i.e. have affairs with hot women) away from the prying eyes of their wives. But...

There’s no denying that the cast for upcoming psychological thriller The Loft is immense: Karl Urban, James Marsden, Wentworth Miller, Eric Stonestreet, and Matthias Schoenaerts star as the five male leads, with Isabel Lucas, Rhona Mitra, and Rachael Taylor starring opposite them.
The first trailer and images have gone online, and the trailer is rather red-band, and very promising.

Whatever happened to discreetly getting a hotel room? Or putting a pool table, a big screen TV and a jukebox in your basement, calling it a mancave and inviting your friends over? For the dudes in "Loft," an American remake of a 2008 Belgian film, cheating on their wives requires a serious commitment (unlike their marriages, we suppose), which includes pooling their resources into what one character accurately calls a "fuckpad." Starring an interesting cast including Karl Urban (cool), Matthias Schoenaerts (who starred in the original and rules), James Marsden (meh), Eric Stonestreet (huh?) and Wentworth Miller (oh yeah), the thriller finds the dudes' good times extramarital affairs ruined when a dead body is found in their fancy pants loft, with some kind of clue left in Latin in blood. Yeah, it's one of those movies. Overall, this looks pretty much ready made for a VOD premiere, with director Erik Van...

One of the greatest things about film festivals, something that can even get you through the worst films, the lack of sleep, and the terrible B.O. of your fellow moviegoers, is the chance to discover new talent. You'll see absolute newcomers blast off into the stratosphere, or relatively well-known faces suddenly show off what they've always been capable of, and it's never less than a thrill.
And this year's Cannes Film Festival was no exception. With the festival now in the rear-view mirror, we've picked out five major talents who broke out at this year's festival, and whom we're certain we'll be hearing more from in the years to come. Check them out below, and if you were in Cannes, feel free to weigh in with your own suggestions too.

"Bullhead," the Austin-based Drafthouse Films' surprise Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language film, is a strange beast indeed. What begins as a story about meat-dealing mobsters and cow hormones turns into a much more intense, intimate tale about one man's painful past coming back in terrible and surprising ways.
Jacky (Matthias Schoenaerts) is jacked up on steroids 24/7, and although at first glance he seems like a Belgian Ferdinand the Bull, it soon becomes clear that there's something very off about him. The 'roids are roiling inside him along with a dark secret that has him unsure about his place in the world; he's a wounded soul trapped in the bulky body of a man-made monster. When a new client wants in on Jacky's equally hormone-inflated cattle, he knows something is amiss -- especially given the appearance of an old friend as part of the mobster's crew.
Although the story is technically about crime and cows,...

I recently had the chance to talk with actress Isabel Lucas for Immortals, which hits theaters November 11. I also asked about the upcoming thriller she stars in entitled Loft, a remake of Erik Van Looy's Belgian thriller where five friends share a loft for their extramarital affairs. They begin to question one another when a woman is found dead in the apartment. Here's what Isabel Lucas had to say about Loft.
"There is one I did called Loft, and it's an American remake of a Belgian film. It's a very heady, cerebral murder mystery. It was filmed in New Orleans and in Brussels. It's the same director who did the original. I play Sarah, and, I think I'm allowed to say this, because it's a remake, but she's the girl who gets murdered (Laughs). Yeah, that one comes out, I think, early next year. It's with James Marsden, Eric Stonestreet,...

It's still a bit of a mystery as to when the next Star Trek movie will get going, but Karl Urban seems to be doing just fine in the interim. In addition to landing the title role in the upcoming Judge Dredd remake, Dredd, he is also starring in Erik Van Looy's remake of Loft, is set to reprise his role as Lord Vaako in the untitled Chronicles of Riddick sequel and has now secured yet another new gig. THR has learned that Urban and Chronicles of Narnia star Ben Barnes are attached to a new action film Overdrive. In 2008 Belgian director Erik Van Looy - already quite well known on the international scene thanks to the success of his thriller The Alzheimer Case - created a massive sensation in his home country with the release of Loft. A sexy thriller about a group of friends who jointly maintain a secret apartment for trysts with their mistresses - one of whom turns up dead - the film was a monstrous hit at home. Given the type of content and the massive success, an international remake seemed inevitable. But even given the current hunger for proven commodities what has happened is a bit surprising. In December of 2010 the first remake of Loft appeared, this one a Dutch affair directed by Antoinette Beumer. Apparently Erik Van Looy’s “Loft”, a remake of the 2008 Belgian film of the same name, has been casting something furious for a while now. [1] Shooting for the Farrelly Brothers' The Three Stooges has already begun in Atlanta, but it seems casting for the film isn't over quite yet. Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson has just joined in the role of Sister Rosemary, a nun who works at the orphanges where the Stooges grow up. If you've been following the project, you'll recall that her colleagues at the orphange will include Mother Superior, played by Jane Lynch [2], and Mother Mengele, played by Larry David [3]. I'm going to go ahead and guess that Hudson will be playing the straight man within that holy trio -- or as Deadline [4] puts it, "the nice one." In addition to Hudson, Lynch, and David, the cast also includes Sean Hayes as Larry, Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, Will Sasso as Curly, and Sofia Vergara as "a femme fatale." After the jump, Bradley Cooper agrees to butt heads with Ryan Gosling, and Rachael Taylor...
