Stars Collective Film Entertainment Group is mounting an ambitious animated film trilogy based on “Journey to the West,” one of China’s four great classical novels, the company revealed on the first day of Hong Kong FilMart.
The trilogy — comprising “Bajie,” “Monkey King” and “Nezha” — aims to introduce and expand Eastern mythology to global audiences, building on recent successes in the space. The project comes as Eastern mythology continues gaining traction in entertainment, with video game ”Black Myth: Wukong,” which is based on Chinese mythology, hitting record-breaking sales of 28 million copies ($1.25 billion in revenue) since its August 2024 release, while Lunar New Year release “Ne Zha 2” has passed $2 billion at the global box office.

It's taken a while, but it feels like we're hitting peak "Star Trek: Voyager" nostalgia these days. It was not always like this: On the heels of "The Next Generation" movies and the sprawling war saga of "Deep Space Nine," the premise of "Voyager," which hurled a Federation ship to the other side of the universe where it presumably would encounter nothing familiar, wasn't as compelling. Initial new aliens like the Kazon were duds, and when the show tried to course-correct, it may have overdone it on the Borg storylines. For the first time, but not the last, it began to feel like there was too much "Star Trek."
However, fans have been going back to "Voyager" and discovering it more old-school charms since the streaming era kicked in -- and especially during the pandemic lockdown. The animated "Star Trek: Prodigy" serves as a sequel of sorts, bringing back multiple...

You know how they say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”? Well, the same could be said about Star Trek: Voyager. Once criticized and considered the black sheep of the Star Trek family, this series has made a shocking comeback that has even the harshest critics raising an eyebrow. We’re sure when the show first launched, no one could’ve predicted that years down the line, Voyager would rival The Next Generation in the streaming world.

But here we are—looking at this once-dismissed piece of sci-fi history in a whole new light. It’s like taking a second glance at a movie you hated at first and suddenly realizing it’s a hidden gem. And trust us, that’s exactly what’s happened with Voyager.

Kate Hudson may have a myriad of roles on her résumé but her romantic comedies led her to be called a “rom-com queen.” However, she is opening up about why she wasn’t sure how she felt about that label.
While appearing on Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce podcast, the Running Point star says she has a “mixed feeling” when looking back at the success of her rom-coms and being typecast in those roles.
“It’s a mixed feeling because…now that I’m older, I love it,” Hudson said. “I think what happens when you have a very successful rom-com, it sort of becomes what people expect from you and want from you, and as an actor you’re sort of like, ‘Yeah, but I want to do a million different things.'”

Turns out, when you’ve won Best Picture, most of the time, the only place you can go after that high is down.
Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.
The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.
But when a director’s movie wins Best Picture, does their next one perform better?...

A new take on a German film titled Leberhaken, the film follows Toni (Luiii) as someone wanting to be trained in boxing by a past champion named Elliot (Rhames).
The story is about two people understanding one another and how they change in a series of flashbacks and flashforwards centered on how boxing changed Toni. Cbr to speak with Luiii and Rhames about their film, their relationship in it,...

You’re Next is out today on SteelBook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray exclusively from Lionsgate Limited, and director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett discuss the unmade sequel to the 2011 home invasion slasher in a new commentary track.
“Originally, [the Lamb Mask killer] got decapitated in the script with his hand pinned to his head,” Barrett explains. “But then we were like, ‘Ah, perfect opportunity, because this film’s gonna be a huge theatrical success, everyone’s telling us, so for You’re Next 2 we’ll just bring [L.C. Holt] back as the Lamb Mask killer.’
“But because his frontal cortex is damaged by getting stabbed in the forehead, he won’t be able to feel pain anymore. He’ll be kind of crazier now, and he wants revenge for his brother.”
He continues, “Our sequel idea, which I’m glad we didn’t do, was the notion that Erin would be arrested.

Star Trek: Voyager developed a cult following unlike its more successful spinoff shows such as The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. The Kate Mulgrew starrer again saw an experimental storyline where the titular Voyager ship was placed in a different dimension and was tasked with handling a diverse crew of Starfleet and Maquis.
One two-parter episode of Voyager tested the ship and Captain Kathryn Janeway to such an extent that it faced several casualties. It is arguably one of the best arcs in the whole show and could have lasted longer if not for one intervention. Bryan Fuller, one of the writers on Voyager revealed the behind-the-scenes drama.

On Sunday, the Motion Picture Sound Editors announced the winners of the Mpse Golden Reel Awards, and four of the five Oscar nominees for Best Sound came away victorious: Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and The Wild Robot. The fifth Oscar nominee, A Complete Unknown, had two Golden Reel nominations, but didn't win.
Dune claimed top honors for effects/foley. Wicked was awarded for music editing. The Wild Robot had the best sound editing for animation. And Emilia Pérez won the award for international features. Seven of Nine remains one of the most beloved characters in the Star Trekfranchise. A former Borg drone rescued by the crew of Star Trek: Voyager, she quickly became a stand-in for square pegs of all varieties, as well as the franchise's unofficial ambassador for ex-Borg. Her return in Star Trek: Picard was met with thunderous applause from the Star Trek faithful, and fans have pushed for her continued presence in the franchise as it moves forward. It's an impressive legacy, and in many ways, no other single character can replace her.
Ironically, Star Trek: Lower Decks may have quietly found a similar figure to fill in the gap while fans wait for her possible return. The saga of Badgey -- a homicidal hologram who becomes the crew's greatest foe -- produced a benign duplicate named Goodgey, who remained a part of the Cerritos crew for the rest of the series.

Bird Box is easily one of the most significant films in Netflix’s history. With its excellent cast full of actors like Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, Sarah Paulson, and even Machine Gun Kelly, the record-breaking film became a cultural phenomenon upon its release.

One would assume, considering its success, that everyone on the project had the time of their lives when they were making the film. However, it would seem that one part of the production was tirelessly unrewarding.
Even though the movie’s soundtrack was made by two members of the legendary band Nine Inch Nails, the experience was very frustrating for the two musicians.
Bird Box, Nine Inch Nails, and a very big roadblock
A movie is a lot more than the actors that star in it. Several important aspects of production can be the difference between a memorable and a forgettable project.

U.S. President Donald Trump got a bit of a roasting during the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony in London on Sunday, courtesy of host David Tennant.
The Scottish star (Doctor Who, Inside Man) during his opening monologue mentioned The Brutalist, lauding it as “as film of incredible architecture, the boldest architecture in film this year” with the exception of the hairdo of Donald Trump, played by Sebastian Stan, for The Apprentice.
“Donald Trump said he hasn’t seen The Apprentice — because it’s a 15 [British film rating]. It’s not on Nickelodeon,” Tennant continued before joking he had said Trump’s name three times. “It’s like Beetlejuice – I’ve summoned him.”
He followed up with: “Speaking of villains…” which drew much laughter and applause from the crowd.

When the TV series based on the popular video game franchise Twisted Metal made its premiere on the Peacock streaming service back in July of 2023, it quickly became one of Peacock’s top five original series, racking up 400 million viewing minutes in its first weekend and earning the honor of being the streamer’s “most-binged” premiere. Now, season 2 is speeding toward a summer 2025 premiere, and showrunner has promised that Twisted Metal season 2 is “even bigger than the first one.” You can get a preview of the new batch of episodes by checking out the newly unveiled teaser trailer, embedded above!
Based on an original take by Deadpool and Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, this adaptation of the Twisted Metal franchise centers on a motor-mouthed outsider who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Tiny World producer Plimsoll is making an extreme natural history series for ITV. Since Star Trek: The Next Generation took off in 1987, there hasn't been a Star Trek series that hasn't had some type of connection to The Original Series, even if it was by a thin thread. Star Trek: The Next Generation was for the new crew aboard the Enterprise, which was the orginal starship. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was connected to The Next Generation through Chief O'Brien and the Battle of Wolf 359, which killed Commander Sisko's wife, Jennifer. Captain Jean-Luc Picard had been assimilated by the Borg at the time and was involved in the death of over eleven thousand people. The bond was strengthened when Lt. Commander Worf came to Deep Space Nine.
Star Trek: Voyager crew members visited Quark's Bar on Deep Space Nine before their voyage began, and Reginald Barclay, who had served aboard the Enterprise on The Next Generation, showed up in several episodes as did Counselor Deanna Troi.

For six decades, Star Trekhas told stories in shows set on ships and space stations. While each iteration of the universe Gene Roddenberry created is often very different from the others, there are things that every Star Trek series does. Beyond mere science fiction tropes, storytelling devices and thematic notions are what gives this universe its identity. While the universe is defined by its versatility for storytelling, there are some things every Star Trek story must be. Usually, this refers to more high-minded and thematic considerations.
The characters must be progressive, compassionate, curious and committed to preserving life in all forms. Roddenberry envisioned a better future for humanity with Star Trek, where things like prejudice, fear, cruelty and other undesirable qualities were all but eliminated. However, there are other things that make a story "feel" like Star Trek that appear in one form or another, in every series. From the...

Star Trek: Picard was a bit of an up-and-down mess over its three-season run. A turnstile of showrunners, tonal shifts between seasons, and a blatant disregard for its own conceptual premise all led to the show being a mixed bag at best, or a failure at worst. The lone idea that came out of the series was one involving a potential spinoff, dubbed with love as 'Star Trek: Legacy'.
The show would follow Jean-Luc Picard's son, some of the new cast members from the third season of Picard and a few returning legacy characters, namely Seven of Nine. It was a solid idea when it was pitched, and even though the final Picard showrunner, Terry Matalas, really wanted to make the show, Paramount basically buried the project.
instead, they greenlit a different spinoff, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. It'll be interesting to see if that show lives up to the expectations,...

British boyband Take That and Wicked‘s Jeff Goldblum are set to perform live at this year’s BAFTA Film Awards.
Take That, comprising of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen, will take to the stage on Sunday, Feb. 16 and perform their number one single “Greatest Day”, which famously opened Sean Baker’s nominated hit Anora.
Goldblum, meanwhile, star of Wicked, will perform on the piano during the In Memoriam section of the ceremony. What audiences might not know about the Hollywood icon is that when not acting, Goldblum has a dedicated following of his jazz band, the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. Their upcoming album, “Still Blooming,” is scheduled to be released on Apr. 25.
Vatican drama Conclave, based on the novel by Robert Harris, leads the way with 12 BAFTA nominations — ahead of Emilia Pérez‘s 11 and The Brutalist‘s nine.

Fighting back tears and fresh from receiving the first of two standing ovations, Jennifer Lopez told a Sundance Film Festival audience on Sunday night that starring in Bill Condon’s movie musical Kiss of the Spider Woman made a lifelong dream come true. But it wasn’t for lack of trying.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet ahead of the world premiere at Park City’s Eccles Center Theatre, the superstar entertainer revealed that she had auditioned for some of Hollywood’s best known modern movie musicals, only to get passed over.
“I remember auditioning for Evita, I remember auditioning for Chicago and for Nine — getting very close on Nine,” said Lopez, outfitted for the premiere in a very method ensemble, a glittering spiderweb gown by designer Valdrin Sahiti. “There was a lot of things that I had always hoped that I could do and just wasn’t the right time.

Hugh Grant, known for his roles in iconic romantic comedies like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Love Actually, became a beloved figure in Hollywood during the ’90s and early 2000s. While Grant has always spoken fondly of many of his movies, he has also been honest about the fact that some of his past projects haven’t aged the way he had hoped.

One of those films was Nine Months, a romantic comedy from 1995, where Grant starred opposite Julianne Moore. The movie did well at the box office, but the actor has since regretted being a part of it. His main issue with the movie stemmed from his later realization about the studio behind it.

Hollywood icon and Severance director Ben Stiller reveals the Star Trek connection behind his most treasured possession.
Stiller recently opened up about his love of Star Trek while answering the Proust Questionnaire for Vanity Fair. Among the questions asked by the iconic Proust Questionnaire is "What is your most prized possession," to which Stiller responded, "The Spock ears that Leonard Nimoy gave to me." When asked what his greatest extravagance was, Stiller pointed to the rest of his expansive (and expensive) collection of Star Trek memorabilia.

Following the death of visionary auteur David Lynch, several of his films (and films about him) are now streaming completely for free and without ads, thanks to both Kanopy and The Criterion Channel. Eraserhead and Lost Highway are streaming for free on Kanopy along with the fascinating Alexandre O. Philippe documentary Lynch/Oz, which explores the director's longtime fascination with The Wizard of Oz and that film's influence on him. Meanwhile, The Criterion Channel is streaming perhaps the most intimate documentary made about the filmmaker, David Lynch: The Art Life, for free.
Separated by two decades, 1977's Eraserhead and 1997's The Lost Highway are two of Lynch's more oblique films, with the former gaining cult status and the latter, originally a failure on several fronts, becoming more appreciated over the years. It is Star Trek: Voyager's turn for a glorious comeback after The Next Generation's cast and the Enterprise-d had their big nostalgic moment in 2023. Star Trek: Picard didn't start as a feelgood tribute to Jean-Luc Picard's heyday, but the spinoff certainly reached that point in season 3. After finally reassembling the main cast of The Next Generation, the crew went into battle, slightly wearier than before, on a secretly restored Enterprise-d. It was an unapologetic throwback designed to rekindle memories of a bygone era. By any measure, that goal was achieved.
Star Trek: Voyager celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2025, and despite never hitting the same mainstream heights as The Next Generation, Voyager and its crew reserve a special place in fans' hearts. Modern Star Trek rarely turns down an opportunity to reference - or, indeed, repeat - the past, but such tributes have largely been restricted to The Original...

It's a little wild to think about how little Alison Pill's Agnes Jurati factored into the show's final season. She didn't appear at all as a character and her impact in the prior seasons was essentially erased from the timeline. She became the Borg Queen. It wasn't a good storyline to get her there, sure. She also looked awful in her full 'Borg Queen outfit' to boot.
That CGI was rough, but still. She was the Borg Queen. Yet, despite season three being about the original Borg Queen's character returning, you'd think there'd be some kind of showdown between the two. Not only did that not happen, but Jurati wasn't even mentioned it felt like. Her character made no impact on the final storyline, even though it was ripe with possibility.
So why was that? Why did they opt to undo an entire season of (bad) storytelling? Especially considering...

Luca Guadagnino released two films in 2024, and coming off the energetic “Challengers” was the more introspective “Queer.” The filmmaker’s latest stars Daniel Craig as William Lee, a fictionalized stand-in for author William S. Burroughs, whose slender novel the movie is based on.
The movie premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and later played the New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival. A24 acquired the domestic distribution rights to the movie, with Mubi releasing the movie internationally.
But how can you watch Guadagnino’s latest? Read on to find out.

Former Borg drone Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) was a mother figure and mentor to a group of ex-Borg children in Star Trek: Voyager. Voyager's Borg kids had been assimilated as children, just like Seven, who was only six years old when her parents' ship, the USS Raven, was caught after years of evading capture. Young Annika Hansen was the daughter of Erin and Mangus Hansen, Federation scientists whose study of the Borg brought them to the Delta Quadrant. Annika was too young to become a drone, so she was placed in a maturation chamber until she was older.
Recently liberated from the Borg Collective, Seven was still figuring out how to reclaim her own humanity when the USS Voyager encountered a Borg Cube that had been struck by a virus in Star Trek: Voyager season 6, episode 16, "Collective". The virus rendered the Cube all but inert, killing all the drones...

Three accomplished Star Trek captains and one admiral came from Star Trek: Voyager, but Star Trek: The Next Generation has an even more impressive record. Throughout Voyager's seven seasons, Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) led the USS Voyager on its unprecedented journey home from the unexplored Delta Quadrant. She not only kept most of the crew safe throughout this journey, but also made numerous first contacts with alien species and faced off against the Borg Queen herself. Janeway went on to become one of Star Trek's most impressive admirals and three of her best officers became accomplished captains.
