The reputation of Martin Campbell's 2011 superhero flick "Green Lantern" precedes it. "Green Lantern" was one of the more high-profile bombs of its decade, making $237 million on a $200 million budget. Although the Hal Jordan/Green Lantern character had been a part of DC Comics since 1959, he was still a tough sell to mainstream audiences, given how strange he was.
Briefly: the Green Lantern belongs to the Green Lantern Corps, a widespread intergalactic peacekeeping force of aliens that merrily sails around the cosmos righting wrongs. The members of the Corps are "selected" by semi-sentient rings that affix themselves randomly to their fingers and grant them bizarre superpowers. Green Lantern can fly, yes, but also construct physical objects ... out of the color green. Oh yes, and green is the color of willpower, and the other colors of the spectrum also have their own emotional powers behind them. The mythology runs deeper, of course,...

Following up on the John Wick animated prequel news, Lionsgate also announced today that John Wick: Chapter 4 star Donnie Yen will direct and headline an upcoming spinoff film centered around his scene-stealing character Caine.
The untitled feature is expected to kickstart production in Hong Kong later this year, with a screenplay from The Batman Part II scribe Mattson Tomlin. Plot details remain under warps, but the new film will continue Caine's story arc following the events of Chapter 4, as he has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.
It will be stylistically modeled on the uniquely designed action films that Yen helped make famous, so fans of the action legend should be very, very excited.

Michael Keaton's action thriller that made only $8.7 million at the box office in 2021 becomes a global Netflix hit three years later. After gaining recognition for his comedic performance in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice in 1988, Keaton rose to greater fame for his portrayal of the iconic superhero in Burton's Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). In the following years, Keaton starred in various comedies and dramas, such as Clean and Sober, Much Ado About Nothing, The Paper, Multiplicity, Jack Frost, Herbie: Fully Loaded, and The Other Guys.
Keaton's career saw a resurgence in 2014 after starring in Birdman, playing a washed-up actor seeking a comeback and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Since then, he's starred in several dramas, such as the Best Picture winner Spotlight, while also returning to his iconic roles as Batman in 2023's The Flash and in 2024's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Marvel Comics is beginning its exploration of the era following Emperor Palpatine's death in Return of the Jedi, and for the first time, I feel like I truly understand how fractious and divided the Empire was at that point in the Star Wars timeline. This sets the stage for a complex dynamic, as the dramatic tension of the Empire's fall and the Republic's rise is fertile storytelling ground.
In Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #3 – written by Alex Segura, with art by Jethro Morales and Leonard Kirk – the faction of radical Imperial loyalists led by Moff Adelhard is further divided; as the Moff scrambles to consolidate power in the wake of Palpatine's demise, he faces a major betrayal from his second-in-command, Lieutenant Alaytia.

A veteran Hollywood cast and skilled direction take a convoluted B-movie plot to higher ground. The Protégé puts a brutalized orphan girl under the tutelage of a wily assassin. He becomes a father, friend, and mentor. Who teaches her to go for the jugular like a stalking tiger. The film is loaded with punishing action scenes, but succumbs to periodic silliness with nonsensical flirtations and wild plot twists.
The Protégé opens in 1991 Da Nang, Vietnam. An elite hit man, Moody (Samuel L. Jackson), finds a bloodied preteen girl (Eva Nguyen Thorsen) under dangerous circumstances. He admires the child's toughness and decides to take her under his wing. Three decades later, Anna (Maggie Q), has become a London sophisticate. She owns a high-end rare bookstore. Selling vintage Edgar Allan Poe by day, then savagely collecting million dollar bounties at night. Anna and Moody specialize in finding those who wish to disappear in the shadows.

There are a majority of adult-skewing movies opening this weekend that were poised to perform poorly, even if there weren’t any concerns about the pandemic.
However, there are two bright spots to be thankful for: Disney/20th Century Studios’ Free Guy is holding up significantly better than expected, bound for an estimated $17.2M, easing an amazing -39%, after a second $5.2M Friday, -50% for what will be a 10-day total of $57.2M.
Meanwhile, Paramount and Spinmaster’s little kid pic Paw Patrol is coming in better than expected, even with a day-and-date drop on Paramount+, with $4.5M yesterday, for what’s looking to be a $13.5M weekend at 3,184 theaters. The movie was originally expected to file in the high single digits. Out of the new stuff, the animated feature based on the TV series has the best CinemaScore with an A- and great reviews at 84% certified fresh. The most...

While one doesn’t think of the James Bond film series as a director-driven franchise, there have nevertheless been filmmakers throughout 007’s nearly 60-year cinematic career who have defined or developed the character at different stages.
Yet only one director has had the chance to reboot and reinvent the character twice, with two different actors: Martin Campbell. His first Bond effort, 1995’s GoldenEye, came after a six-year hiatus and introduced Pierce Brosnan as a more suave 007 after the humorless Timothy Dalton. The film also dealt head-on with Bond’s relevance in a post-Cold War world and whether he was a relic himself.
Campbell got the call again a decade later when Brosnan left the series after the woeful, ridiculous Die Another Day. This time he took Bond — in the form of Daniel Craig — literally back to the beginning: 2006’s Casino Royale was not just a mostly faithful adaptation of Ian Fleming...

The Protégé is the story of three deadly assassins, trained killers for seemingly their entire lives, whose paths cross in unexpected ways. Maggie Q plays Anna, who was rescued as a child by Moody (Samuel L. Jackson) and raised by him to become the world’s most dangerous killer for hire. When her father figure/mentor himself is slaughtered, she goes after those responsible — but has to go through a mysterious man named Rembrandt (Michael Keaton), himself a professional assassin with whom a mutual yet suspicious attraction develops.
The Protégé is directed by Martin Campbell, the New Zealand-born filmmaker best known for two of the biggest James Bond films of all time, 1995’s GoldenEye with Pierce Brosnan and 2006’s Casino Royale with Daniel Craig. Campbell, whose other credits include the groundbreaking 1985 UK series Edge of Darkness, 1998’s The Mask of Zorro, and the 2017 Jackie Chan thriller The Foreigner, knows the...

The new action, crime, thriller, The Protégé, starring the simply amazing Maggie Q, is such a treasure trove of tantalizing action sequences and delightful performances that one may finding themselves hoping that it might be that start of a lucrative franchise.
Anna (Maggie Q) is one of the more prolific contract killers in the world. But when her father figure, Moody (Samuel L. Jackson) is brutally murdered, she embarks on a quest for revenge that leads her down a rabbit hole of deceit and deadly confrontations that becomes far more complex than a simple attempt at an eye for an eye retribution.
Penned by Richard Wenk, who wrote both The Equalizer (2014) and The Equalizer 2 (2018) among others, the film plays as a standard revenge tale with a few flourishes here and there and a well-placed twist or two to keep the story fresh throughout. Martin Campbell, who also directed Casino Royale...

Those distributors with new movies this weekend will find they can easily blame any soured performance at the box office on the delta variant and vax cards being required at NYC, San Francisco and New Orleans cinemas.
But, let’s not forget one huge thing: It’s late August and that means it’s the season for lower wattage IP aimed at varying niche demos and kids heading back to school. Historically such factors have never created a stampede at the box office, however, there’s more reason to expect lower ticket sales as two of this weekend’s wide entries are going day-and-date with their studios’ streaming services. This Friday Comscore reports 47% K-12 schools are still on summer break, while 79% colleges are out; that’s down from last week’s respective 67% and 95%.

Lionsgate has revealed the first trailer for The Protégé. This action flick has a ton going for it on paper. Not only does it feature Oscar-winner Michael Keaton duking it out with Maggie Q but it's even got some Samuel L. Jackson thrown in there for good measure. Not to mention that it's directed by Martin Campbell, who previously introduced us to Daniel Craig's James Bond in Casino Royale. As we can see from the trailer, Campbell and the cast packed a whole lot of fighting and explosions into this one.
The trailer kicks off with Samuel L. Jackson's character Moody offering up some advice to Maggie Q's Anna. We then get a look at Anna's particular set of skills, which are impressive. She knows her way around a gun. These two have racked up quite the body count over the years and that comes back to bite in a painful way.

The Lucky Exports Pitch Program, founded by Christina Hodson’s Hodson Exports and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment, has sold five action feature pitches to major film companies including Warner Bros., Sony, Universal, New Line, and Thunder Road, and is in development on a high concept television series.
The Lucky Exports Pitch Program was created by Hodson and Morgan Howell of Hodson Exports and Robbie, Josey McNamara, and Tom Ackerley of LuckyChap Entertainment
The program’s goal was to create opportunities for female-identifying writers to gain exposure and the experience needed in order to be hired on studio/franchise jobs. The program was a huge success with all the feature pitches sold, some in competitive situations. The pitch sales mark the first feature deals for each writer.
From Nov. 4th to Dec. 6th, 2019, six female-identifying writers participated in an action focused writers’ room. Starting in most cases with no more than a logline or title,...

The Television Academy’s decision to change the formula for the number of nominations in each category may have benefited the artisans and below-the-line talent on programs the most.
While the number of comedy and drama nominees expanded to eight, all other categories had to rely on a submission count to determine how many slots they got. For most of the supporting performer categories, that also meant an expansion to eight. Most categories that were already at six stayed there, however.
In a few cases, the new rule actually meant the loss of a nominee: In variety talk, because there were only 24 submissions, the race went from six to five slots — forcing the ouster of “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” In variety sketch and children’s program, the number of nominees was reduced to just three, due to a paltry number of entrants.

No, you’re not dreaming – Metroid Prime 4 is real, and it’s coming to Nintendo Switch. If you’re now frantically looking for more details on Samus Aran’s long-awaited return, you shouldn’t bother – the Big N revealed nothing other than the fact that the sequel is in active development.
Confirmation comes by way of Nintendo’s games spotlight at E3 2017 today, but the title is clearly in very early development, as no gameplay or cinematic trailer was in sight to whet fans’ appetite. No, for now, we’ll just have to be happy that Nintendo has finally decided to return to the series, which hasn’t had a mainline entry since Metroid Prime 3: Corruption all the way back in 2007. That’s right, a decade has passed since we last set out on a first-person adventure across the galaxy.

We know all about Norman Bates and Patrick Bateman, but what about their homes? Let's take a look inside...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Silence Of The Lambs, Psycho, Seven, American Psycho, Manhunter and A Place In The Sun series two. We may be lying about that last one.
As programmes like Through The Keyhole and Homes Under The Hammer prove, you can tell an awful lot about a person from the house they live in. But those programmes always focused on relatively well-adjusted types - peeople who had jobs in television or sport, or maybe a man named Ken from the home counties who's just bought a bungalow at auction and wants to do it up for a tidy profit. That kind of thing.
What might the homes of the more criminally minded tell us about them? What kind of soft furnishings do they like?...

The science fiction genre is rife with films from across the quality spectrum, along with one of the more passionate fanbases. Movies in this particular genre can be noisily action-packed or quietly meditative (sometimes both), with the genre best used to commentate on social and political matters amongst a world filled with crazy technology, robots and mutants.
Many a masterpiece falls into the sci-fi category, with director Duncan Jones adding his film Moon to that list way back in 2009. His adoration for the genre is in every frame, and using minimal cast with one setting (hint, it’s in the title) Jones crafted a movie that was unfortunately not seen by many but treasured by those who were lucky enough to catch it.

Sing has almost everything required for a Hollywood animation: the big names (Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, etc.), the chart-topping soundtrack (the rights to the music in this film must have cost a fortune), and, even, a decent premise. The one thing it’s missing — and perhaps the most important quotient – is any real sense of chemistry.
Buster Moon (McConaughey) is our protagonist, an at-times-too-friendly koala bear that’s trying to save his deteriorating (both financially and physically) theater from its impending doom. He holds a singing competition that ends up attracting most of the city, including a stay-at-home pig named Rosita (Witherspoon), a mouthy street performer mouse named Mike (MacFarlane), a punk teenage porcupine named Ash (Johansson), a gangster gorilla’s son named Johnny (Taron Egerton), and a flamboyant pig named Gunter (Nick Kroll). Chicago – Put it in the books. The highly successful and popular Asian Pop-Up Cinema in Chicago closed their 2016 Fall Season with “Round Trip Heart,” a Japanese film from female director Yuki Tanada. Ms. Tanada tells the story of Hachiko, a food cart attendant who works on the “Romance Train.” She temporarily goes off track when a mysterious stranger reads a private note from her mother, and insists on taking the buttoned-up woman on a journey to find that mother. Tanada appeared on behalf of her film at the final Asian Pop-Up Cinema screening for 2016.
Yuki Tanada began her film career in 2004, writing and directing the saucy “Moon to Cherry,” about members of a college porn-writing club. Other films written and directed by her include “Million Yen Girl” (2008) and the film that screened at the Asian Pop-Up Cinema, “Round Trip Heart” (2015). Scream Factory has released Bad Moon to Blu-ray, and they’ve included both the theatrical cut, as well as the rarer director’s cut. I don’t want to oversell it, this isn’t Nightbreed, the director’s cut of Bad Moon actually clocks in at a few seconds less than the theatrical. That I can tell, the only difference throughout the entire film is that transformation scene, which really makes little difference. I know several people who consider this to be one of their favorite horror films, but other than that, it’s rarely one I see mentioned. The werewolf genre is criminally unappreciated in the first place, and a lot of the really good ones are just obscure enough that they never really capture the attention of the mainstream. Bad Moon is a solid werewolf movies. And Scream Factory has released the most complete version to date.

For my money, there are few up and coming filmmakers who are more exciting to follow than Duncan Jones. He is a director who consistently puts out unique movies that make you always want to see what he has up his sleeve next. This week, he goes big and blockbuster for the first time with Warcraft, based on the obsessively played online computer game. It’s my least favorite work from Jones, I concede that, having loved Moon and dug Source Code, but it’s his most ambitious, so that’s of note too, as well. That being said, it’s finally getting him into the mainstream, so I can take that as a real positive. It may even get a passion project or two of his (like the science fiction tale Mute) off the ground! This epic film is an adaptation of the video game World of Warcraft. It...

On the heels of the massive success of Inside Men, Lee recently starred in the Us thriller Misconduct, with Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins and Josh Duhamel.

Here are his next films to look forward to.

During his meteoric ascent through the filmmaking ranks, Duncan Jones has had one itch that he’s still to scratch. Mute, a small noir sci-fi that was shaping up to be the director’s homage to his beloved Blade Runner, slipped away as he shifted gears from Moon to Source Code and now onto Warcraft. Well, it’s slipped right back again. Talking exclusively to Empire at Legendary’s Comic-Con preview night, Jones revealed that Mute is back on the agenda.“Dark Horse and Glenn Fabry and myself have been working on the graphic novel for [Mute] for years now – literally years – and there’s a very good chance, if I can squeeze [it in] in these 11 months, that you’ll see the film before you see the graphic novel.”That period, of course, represents the gap between Warcraft being locked (and it’s only a few effects shots away now) and its...

One brave Guardian ventured into the depths of the Moon to take on Destiny‘s Crota’s End raid by himself and lived to tell the tale.
Designed to put even the most talented six-player fireteams to the test, the impressive feat was done by YouTube user sc Slayerage, who took down the titular Hive master in a measly 33 minutes.
Playing as a Hunter, Slayerage utilized the class’s ability to turn invisible in order to circumvent large groups of enemies, saving precious ammo and time as he makes a beeline for Crota itself. Armed with the Gjallarhorn — a rocket launcher with the highest burst damage you can find — along with plenty of ammunition and a sharp eye for a good sniper shot, the Destiny devotee makes the raid, which often takes a pack of six Guardians hours to complete, seem like a walk in the park.

Almost fifty years since it first wowed cinemagoers at the tail-end of the '60s, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is back in the public consciousness thanks to a cinema re-release as part of the BFI's Days of Fear and Wonder sci-fi season and its place in the just-released Kubrick Blu-ray Masterpiece Collection. That's not to mention Christopher Nolan's outer space drama Interstellar, a film that very much hangs in the shadow of its illustrious predecessor.
After destroying mankind at the close of Dr Strangelove in 1964, Kubrick sought to tell a more progressive story about humanity with his follow-up. Teaming with heralded sci-fi author Arthur C Clarke, Kubrick fashioned a screenplay that tracked the evolution of man through encounters with giant black monoliths.
Eventually released in 1968, a year before Apollo 11 touched down on the moon, 2001 was hugely ambitious both in narrative and technical terms. Kubrick reached...

warning: spoilers!
And then there was the week when Doctor Who threw an Mra-esque tantrum about abortion.
After last week’s episode, reader Danielm80 and I independently came to the conclusion that the Doctor has been engaging in “Pickup Artist”-style behavior toward Clara, including “negging.” This week the Doctor appears to take inspiration from “Men’s Rights Activists,” who believe that straight white men are the most oppressed people on Earth, as evidenced by, for example, the fact that women can have abortions without being legally required to consult with and get the permission of the father of the embryo she’s carrying.
Doctor Who under Steven Moffat has had numerous problems with its depictions of women, but by now venturing into Pua and Mra territory, it is heading down the most vile black hole of misogyny, where the nonhumanity of women isn’t under debate, it’s foundational.

Every day seems to bring a new release celebrating the anniversary of some well known movie from the past. Moontrap may not be that well known, but Olive Films is honoring the Walter Koenig/Bruce Campbell sci-fi horror flick’s 25th anniversary with its first ever DVD/Blu-ray release.
It would probably be fair to call Moontrap an obscure film these days since it has never been released on DVD or Blu-ray (at least in the Us) since its brief theatrical run and video release all the way back in 1989. VHS and gray market DVDs have been the only way to see the movie until now.
The best way to describe Moontrap to the uninitiated is to imagine a Stuart Gordon-esque splicing of Alien and Hardware.
Synopsis:
During a routine flight, two veteran space shuttle pilots ("Star Trek’s" Walter Koenig and Evil Dead’s Bruce Campbell) discover an...

July 20, 2014, marks the 45th anniversary of man’s first landing on the Moon. We’ve all seen the footage and know the “official” story from news reports, the Internet, and, for younger viewers, the history books. But what haven’t we been told about Earth’s closest neighbor? What really happened on that historic day? What did our astronauts encounter on the lunar surface? And what don’t our world’s governments want us to know?
