When One Piece live-action took the world by storm last year, the one name that made the most noise was Mackenyu, the actor who played Roronoa Zoro in the series. Although Mackenyu has been part of the industry for quite a long time and has worked on many big projects, his following skyrocketed when he joined the cast of Netflix’s One Piece and took the famous three swords in his hands.
Mackenyu as Zoro in One Piece Live-Action | Netflix
While One Piece gave the actor the recognition he deserved, it was certainly not his first live-action adaptation. From playing Scar in the Fullmetal Alchemist live-action to portraying the role of Pegasus Seiya in Knights of the Zodiac, Mackenyu’s portfolio is quite big for his age. And while Zoro was his biggest role as a swordsman, it was certainly not his first or his favorite one.

Now on its 8th edition, the international TV forum Conecta Fiction & Entertainment (Cf&e), held in the ancient Spanish city of Toledo from June 18 to 21, is turning its focus to Brazil and Portugal.
The South American country is haltingly reactivating its audiovisual industry under President Lula de Silva’s new government, which earmarked nearly $1 billion for the sector last year. Meanwhile, Portugal has become a thriving hub for Portuguese-language premium dramas and launched a new 30% cash refund incentive program in April to lure higher-budget film and TV productions to shoot in the country.
Conecta expects a delegation of 50 Portuguese and 30 Brazilian participants, who together represent “a market of more than 217 million potential viewers and a long history of content production,” said Conecta’s founder-director, Géraldine Gonard, at the press conference held on June 4.
The forum will be offering a panoply of activities with 175 speakers, 49.1% of whom will be women, said Gonard.

While Disney's live-action reimaginings of classic tales are often criticized for retelling an already iconic story. However, some of them include unique depictions of iconic characters that deserve celebration in their own right. From villains to princesses, live-action Disney movies are ripe with the potential for new takes on tales as old as time.
Some fans would rather nothing be changed in the transition between mediums, but others would much rather they be completely redone. The best live-action Disney characters live somewhere in between; unabashedly the characters fans have come to know and love and yet wonderfully reimagined and recontextualized.

Warning: Spoilers for Disney Villains – Scar #4 One of the more significant takeaways from Disney's The Lion King is that Scar was an ineffective leader, resulting from his failure to respect the Circle of Life. Although the movie's new prequel comic recently made an effort to portray Scar as a more effective king, the latest issue from the same series confirms that Scar actually had no excuse for his later failings.
Disney Villains – Scar #4 – by writer Chuck Brown, artist Trevor Fraley, colorist Chiara Di Francia and letterer Jeff Eckleberry – features the villain at the height of his power, yet plagued by visions of a desolate Pride Lands, one that will be familiar to viewers of the film.

A little-known abandoned Disney movie concept, concerning the adaptation of the medieval fable Reynard the Fox, resurfaced in an important Disney comic, as Disney Villains: Maleficent #1 brings the Reynard character back within Disney's Sleeping Beauty lore. Hardcore Disney fans will be pleased with the deep cut making its way into this upcoming comic, paying homage to an obscure idea for a movie that was never to be.
Disney Villains: Maleficent #1, written by Soo Lee, features the character of Reynard the Fox, a folkloric trickster figure, adding him Maleficent's story, along with a completely original background and story. Originally intended for a film adaptation in the 1930s by Walt Disney animation, the Mouse House's version of Reynard is finally seeing the light of day, albeit much different than ever planned.

Scar's murder of Mufasa in The Lion King was not the first time he used the same method to kill someone - he also killed Zuhour, the hyena queen, in the same way. Scar's assassination of Zuhour was a crucial step in his plan to take over Pride Rock and eliminate any potential threats to his rule. Scar's attempted murder of Zuhour gave him the experience and practice he needed to successfully kill Mufasa and become the despicable villain that traumatized '90s kids.

Disney has confirmed a fan theory that the hyenas in The Lion King survived by cannibalizing each other, adding a dark twist to the story. This revelation is smart as it aligns with the natural behavior of hyenas and emphasizes their exclusion from the Circle of Life. The hyenas' desperation and their history of cannibalism explain why they joined Scar's forces and contributed to the destruction of the Pride Lands. It also adds irony to Scar's fate of being consumed by his own promised food source, the scavengers he recruited.
Despite producing the world's most popular kids' movies, Disney is no stranger to darkness, but one recently confirmed The Lion King fan theory goes further than anyone expected. From Bambi's mom to Pinocchio's Pleasure Island scene, many Disney movies have deliberately dark moments, but it turns out a dangling thread from the original Lion King tops them all.

A new series from Dynamite aims to return readers to that period with a new comic book that puts all the attention on the film's villain, Scar. Writer Chuck Brown and artist Trevor Fraley are teaming up for Disney Villains: Scar, a new series that is set during the original film in between scenes.

"If you died tomorrow, I don't think I'd cry, I gave you one too many nights," sings Jessie Reyez in "Mutual Friends," a single off her new album, "Yessie," released on Sept. 16. Brimmed with much of the gritty and raw R&b and soul sounds Reyez is known for, the 11-track album is her second studio album and fourth project. In "Yessie," the Grammy-nominated performer mesmerizes with her unique, raspy voice while offering fresh sounds, hopeful lyrics, and dance vibes.
"I'm always just talking about my life and what I go through, but I'm definitely in a different space."

Disney dominated the 18th annual Ves Awards with five nominations apiece for Jon Favreau’s frontrunner “The Lion King” and Robert Rodriguez’s surprising “Alita: Battle Angel” (acquired from Fox). Joining them for the top photo-real prize were the Disney-led “Avengers: Endgame” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” along with Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man”. The Ves Awards will be held January 29th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Competing for supporting VFX were Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman”, Sam Mendes’ “1917,” (which stitched together the World War I thriller as one continuous shot and offered various enhancements), James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” and “The Aeronauts.”
In animation, Disney also fared well, with Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” (which grabbed five nominations) and “Frozen 2.” They were joined by Golden Globe nominee “Missing Link” from Laika, surprise nominee “Klaus” (the innovative 2D feature from Netflix and Spanish director Sergio Pablos), and,...

Disney has been releasing a wave of live-action remakes of their classic animated features over the last few years. While there are still many of those on the slate, we appear to be entering the next phase of this venture, as we’re getting sequels and spinoffs to the original films that expand the story. And one more that we can now report is in the works is a solo movie for Beauty and the Beast villain Gaston, as played by Luke Evans.
Sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us an Aladdin sequel is in development, which we now know to be true – have informed us that Disney is putting together a film based around the handsome hunter, with the project set to end up on the Disney Plus streaming service. And while details beyond that remain scarce, this news follows on from our previous report that...

Does Nala wear lipstick? Probably not, but “The Lion King” fans can celebrate the release of the live-action remake with a new line of makeup that’s themed to Disney’s latest redo. For about $40, the Can’t Wait to Be Queen eyeshadow palette by Luminess Cosmetics includes shades named after the Nala, Mufasa and the film’s setting (“Pride Rock”).

While it was reported earlier in the week that EastEnders star Sam Strike is starring as a teenage Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw prequel, that may not be entirely true. While he is confirmed to be playing a killer in this latest entry in the horror franchise, the movie will actually be a mystery that revolves around 3 teenage psychopaths. And the big question at the end of the movie will be: Who is Leatherface?
Relative unknown James Bloor will play the second teenage psychopath in a role that is described exactly like Sam Strike's character. Both will play budding young maniacs who have an affinity for the chainsaw. And 'saw', as any true The Texas Chainsaw Massacre fan knows, is family! At this point, it is unknown if different actors will play Leatherface at different stages of his life, or if it will all take place in one time period.

"So many pretty parts and no pretty wholes." That basically sums up the motivation behind the title character of Lucky McKee's 2002 breakout film, May. And there was no bigger reason that the film and director found success than the unforgettable star of the film, and the newest Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel honoree, Angela Bettis.
Although she had done sporadic film and television work before starring as the lead character in May (including an outstanding supporting role in Girl, Interrupted, the horror film Bless the Child with Kim Basinger and Jimmy Smits, and the little known thriller People are Dead with Jennifer Carpenter and Kristen Bell), this was the film (premiering at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival) that launched Bettis onto the mainstream horror scene. And since her trumpeted arrival, there has been no turning back for this brilliant actress and horror mainstay.

Joan Burrows (two time Fright Meter Award Winner Angela Bettis) returns to her hometown where, years earlier, she was the sole survivor of a sadistic, brutal serial killer's rampage in which she witnessed her best friend tortured and ultimately killed. It's her niece's graduation; however, the joyous atmosphere of the small town quickly shifts as teenagers begin showing up murdered in the same manner in which the serial killer that Joan thought she killed all those years earlier killed his victims. Could it really be him, or is someone recreating the carnage with the hopes of succeeding in what his/her inspiration failed to do before: murder Joan?

"The Resident" (2011)

This actually isn't the first time Hilary Swank has seen one of her films go direct to DVD after the films "Red Dust" and "Birds of America" suffered the same fate, but surely there was more riding on this horror film from the resurgent Hammer Films about a recently separated doctor who learns her Brooklyn loft isn't quite as wonderful as she thought it would be. "Secretary" screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson co-wrote this film, which co-stars Christopher Lee, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Lee Pace.

"Topsy-Turvy" (1999)
Directed by Mike Leigh

It doesn't matter if you're a black swan or a white swan; we're sure you're going to want to bring home the dementedness that is Natalie Portman's Oscar-winning performance in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.
The film also stars Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder. If you live in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco or Chicago, you can participate in the Black Swan Experience on April 2nd.
Since Scream 4 is coming out in theaters shortly, it is only appropriate that the Scream trilogy is being re-released in glorious Blu-ray. Bring home the franchise created by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson that gave the horror genre a booster shot back in the mid 1990s. A trio from the original cast -- Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette -- will be gracing the big screens with a whole new cast soon enough.

There are precisely two reasons that a thorough horror fan would still be waiting around for the four-year-old Canadian indie flick Scar: 1. It was presented (and therefore "shot") in 3D -- and that's not something you often see in a low-budget Canadian horror movie. 2. It has Angela Bettis in the lead role, whom we know and love from Toolbox Murders, the Carrie remake, The "Sick Girl" episode of 'Masters of Horror', lots of TV work, and (of course) Lucky Mckee's May -- which I'd still maintain is one of the best horror films of the past ten years. Were it not for those two points, Scar would barely rate above a disinterested blip on the radar of the average horror fan. And...
