The 15 Best Jane Austen Movies, Ranked
Image
Jane Austen needs no introduction. She's the original rom-com queen, writing novels in Regency-era England that gently satirized class and gender roles while also giving her readers classic romances between characters who have stood the test of time. So when it comes to novelists whose work has been adapted for the screen on a fairly regular basis, Jane Austen is right up there with Stephen King.

Year after year, we get different Jane Austen interpretations of her most popular novels, some placed within an appropriately period setting, others given a modern-day update. But no matter when they take place, they've all got that special something that allowed Jane Austen to stand the test of time: relatable heroines and their lovable but occasionally toxic love interests.

Although there have been some truly excellent Jane Austen miniseries adaptations, for the purposes of this piece, we're focusing on the film versions of her work.

Everyone Wants Their Own Jane Austen Adaptation, and They’re Getting Them
Image
It’s the year 2025 and we are blessed with not one, and dare we say not even two, but three new Jane Austen adaptations. Ms. Austen herself turns 250 years old this year, and it’s not a moment too soon to celebrate the life and works of the iconic author.

Now, exactly two decades after Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice” made cinematic history with the Darcy (Mathew Macfadyen) hand flex seen ’round the world, there are a number of modern adaptations in the works, not to mention other recent works inspired by her life and most beloved novels, from the film “Jane Austen Wrecked My Life” to the series “Miss Austen.”

And “Pride & Prejudice” is hardly the only Austen book getting new life in two (!!) formats, as Austen seems to suddenly be everywhere, all over again. Ahead, we break down the upcoming adaptations, and provide some guidance on...

The early years of Austen

Born into a modest family, Austen’s father was a clergyman, a man who had social status but not much wealth to back it up with. She had seven other siblings to grow up with,...

This 10-Year-Old Guillermo del Toro Classic is the Perfect Gothic Mystery That's Still Worth Revisiting
Image
Quick Links Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak Is a Love Letter to Victorian Gothic Horror Crimson Peak Originally Had Two Different Actors in the Lead Roles Crimson Peak Is the Haunted Mansion From Guillermo Del Toro Audiences Never Got to See

Guillermo del Toro's 2015 film Crimson Peak might not be as well remembered as some of his other films, but it's a case study of Gothic romance and mystery. The film stars Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska in a disturbing and doomed love story between Wasikowska's Edith Cushing and Hiddleston's Thomas Sharpe. In true del Toro fashion, it's a movie that relies heavily on visuals to create the compelling atmosphere its characters inhabit. Overall, its tone feels rather reminiscent of another master of horror, Alfred Hitchcock. Still, del Toro manages to pull off a story that manages both to be an homage and an original. He...

10 Best Jane Austen Movie Adaptations
Image
Austen's novels have stood the test of time and continue to be popular today, with numerous film and TV adaptations. Movie adaptations of Austen's work vary in their faithfulness to the original plot, but the best ones capture the timeless elements and add a new perspective. The movie adaptations highlighted in the article showcase the comedic wit, social satire, and romantic allure of Austen's novels.

Jane Austen only completed six novels in her lifetime, but they have remained popular for centuries, and been adapted into dozens of movies and TV shows. Austen spent her entire life in England, and her novels comment upon the British aristocracy that she saw all around her. Although she wasn't afforded the same freedoms as men, she painted the world which she knew in captivating detail, and her novels wove in subtle critiques of the structural misogyny of the time. Austen had a beautifully lyrical style of writing,...

Emerald Fennell Is ‘Thrilled’ by the Way ‘Saltburn’ Leaves Audiences ‘Physically Shaken’
Image
Savannah, Georgia is an appropriate setting for a conversation with filmmaker Emerald Fennell about her newest film “Saltburn,” which follows an Oxford student who becomes enmeshed with a wealthy classmate’s eccentric family during a summer at their country estate. “It’s fully Gothic, especially at Halloween, so it’s really my favorite kind of place,” said the director to IndieWire during a recent interview. Though, in an interview setting that featured walls that alternated between hard, slate gray panels, and thin, beaming bars of fluorescent lighting, Fennell joked that the whole thing felt a bit like “a ‘John Wick’ interrogation.”

In town to accept the Spotlight Director Award at the Scad Savannah Film Festival, Fennell denied feeling a daunting amount of pressure around what to follow up her Academy Award-winning debut “Promising Young Woman” with. “I usually have a few things going on, but I don’t write them down.

10 Best Anime For Jane Austen Romance Fans
Image
Jane Austen wrote mannerly novels that take place in England during the Regency era. Though her books are mostly known for their iconic romances, she mostly wrote about manners and made tongue-in-cheek social observations. Her humor is subtle, and her protagonists and love interests are entirely lovable – even the woefully flawed ones.

There is no direct anime retelling of any Jane Austen novels, but there are many anime titles that may interest Austen fans. They share common themes, romance tropes, and similar protagonists. Austen's novels are iconic for their Regency setting, but her stories transcend time and fans would enjoy both historical and genre-bending anime with similar themes.

Felicity Jones' Role In Doctor Who, Explained
Image
A few years before she would become a household name by starring in critically acclaimed films, Felicity Jones had a breakout role in an episode of Doctor Who. The accomplished young actor saw a meteoric rise to the top in such movies as 2014's The Theory of Everything, and she was even nominated for an Oscar for the same film. Often impressing with her range and cross-genre appeal, Jones has starred in gripping dramas and big-budget blockbusters like 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Even in a small part in Doctor Who, she gave a standout performance that offered a clue to her future success.

‘Persuasion’ Director Carrie Cracknell Talks That Trailer Response: Fans Have ‘Deep Feeling’ for Austen
Image
Make no mistake: filmmaker and theater director Carrie Cracknell is a Jane Austen super-fan. Like many Brits, she spent her teenage years consuming the beloved author’s work, first at school — her first Austen, assigned by a beloved teacher: “Pride and Prejudice” — followed by a self-assigned journey through the rest of Austen’s oeuvre, plus the requisite repeated watchings of iconic cinematic adaptations. The Jennifer Ehle- and Colin Firth-starring “Pride and Prejudice” miniseries? Cracknell estimates she watched it “seven times, back to back” as a teen.

“I’ve always found the combination of this proto-feminism, of these women trying to make sense of the world that they’re trapped in, but also the romanticism and the kind of utter joy and the warmth of her storytelling, to be a really compelling combination,” Cracknell said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “It was one of the backdrops of growing up for me.

A Look Back at Jane Austen's Enduring Legacy on the 200th Anniversary of Her Death
Jane Austen
A love of Jane Austen is a habit the world just can’t seem to kick.

This week marks the 200th anniversary of famed author (and hopeless romantic) Jane Austen’s death. The author continues to bring England’s Regency period to life (and romanticize it) to her countless fans. In a sign of her legacy’s tremendous influence, the Bank of England debuted a 10 pound note with her face on it this week.

But to call Austen lovers simply “fans” is underselling their devotion. Fanatics, perhaps, is more accurate. They join clubs for Austen lovers in droves — the Jane Austen...

Theater News: 2017 Non-Equity Jeff Awards Celebrate Best of Chicago Theater
Chicago – The 44th edition of the Non-Equity Jeff Awards were given out on June 5th, 2017, at what insiders call “the theater prom.” The event honors the non-union smaller or “storefront” theater companies, and their efforts to produce quality stage work. Hosted in grand style by Alexis Roston and Lillian Castillo, the recipients of the top play was “At the Table” by the Broken Nose Theatre and top musical was “High Fidelity” by the Refuge Theatre Project.

The night was a raucous affair at Chicago’s Anthenaum Theatre, as the hosts kept the party going between recognitions. Excerpts (Plays) and songs (Musicals) were presented for each of the top ten nominated shows. A Special Award for Theatrical and Charitable Contributions was given to David Cerda, acknowledging his long career and (as the inscription on the award said) thanking him “… for ‘Dragging’ the Chicago Theatre world into your ‘Hell in a Handbag’ with humor,...

Indie Spotlight: ‘The Cate Morland Chronicles’ Geeks Out, With An Assist From Austen
Ever since The Lizzie Bennet Diaries became a smash hit, we've seen a number of web series that adapt classic literature into a vlog format. One of the latest entries in that categories is The Cate Morland Chronicles, and it adds a twist to the genre by turning one of Jane Austen's characters into a pop culture geek.

The source material for Cate Morland is Northanger Abbey, which was written by Austen around 1799 and published posthumously in 1817. The protagonist of the book is Cate Morland, who has a specific affinity for Gothic novels; in the web series version (where she is portrayed by Madeline Thatcher), that trait of hers is represented as a general love for genre fiction in all its shapes and sizes.

Cate Morland's decision to depict its protagonist as a modern nerd is what sets it apart from other Austen-inspired vlogs. Many of those shows translate...

Whit Stillman on Jane Austen, George Gershwin, and 8 Other Things That Influenced His Work
Jane Austen
It's been 25 years since the garrulous "UHBs" of Whit Stillman's Metropolitan arrived on screens, paving the way for everything from Wes Anderson to Gilmore Girls. In the years since, Stillman has directed three more features (Barcelona, The Last Days of Disco, and Damsels in Distress), made a pilot for Amazon, and started work on Love and Friendship, an adaptation of Jane Austen's The Lady Susan. Now, to celebrate the anniversary rerelease of Metropolitan, Stillman spoke with us about the films, books, and music that have influenced his own work.Jane Austen I came late to Jane Austen. I read the wrong novel when I was in college, which was Northanger Abbey. I thought it was terrible. In Northanger Abbey, there are really two things happening: One, there's a typical Jane Austen story about characters involved in romantic situations, and maybe they're funny and maybe they're being mocked. And...

An Austen expert's view of Austenland
Louise West was curator of Jane Austen's House Museum. What does she think of the Us theme-park romcom?

This is a dreadful film. But at its heart, there is a valid idea. It's about a 32-year-old Jane Austen obsessive called Jane, who visits a theme park where Austen fans dress up in Regency costume and are courted by actors. Jane, played by Keri Russell, does ring true: I met a number of women like her in my time as curator of Jane Austen's House Museum in Chawton, though I can't say whether any of them actually had a lifesize cutout of Colin Firth as Mr Darcy in their bedroom.

As far as I know, a theme park like Austenland doesn't exist, but I can certainly imagine one. There's a Dickens World in Kent with costumed actors giving tours – but I don't think they actually immerse visitors in the...

'Austenland' Poster Shows Keri Russell Coming Out as an Austenite, Holding Her Austen Tote With Pride
Keri Russell
In the latest Jane Austen-themed romcom "Austenland," Keri Russell plays Jane Hayes, a woman who becomes obsessed with the BBC miniseries of "Pride and Prejudice" and travels to an Austen re-enactment theme park to find herself a dashing gentleman, ideally someone along the lines of Mr. Darcy himself. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Shannon Hale. Moviefone debuted the poster today, which shows Keri Russell geeking out over Mr. Darcy (join the club, honey). Hopefully she's also read the book if she's going to survive in the world of Austen. Jennifer Coolidge plays Jane's buxom sidekick who is sure to get a few laughs in. Also starring is J.J. Feild, a period piece vet who played Henry Tilney in "Northanger Abbey," and seems a likely contender for Jane's hero. Rounding out the cast is unlikely period pick Bret McKenzie ("Flight of the Concords...

Lost Vegas, a Crazy Concept with even Crazier Visuals
Writer: Jim McCann

Artist: Janet Lee

Publisher: Image

In Lost Vegas 1, Eisner Award winners Jim McCann and Janet Lee (Return of the Dapper Men) manage to marry a wacky high concept sci-fi story with deep characterization and unique visuals. On the surface, Roland is just another space scoundrel like Han Solo or Malcolm Reynolds. However, he lacks these characters’ penchant for action and falls flat at bravado with his laughable attempts to seduce a pair of showgirls. The story makes clear that Roland is a “thinker”, and his failed attempt at conning a savage alien at Black Jack earns him his sentence in Lost Vegas, a penal colony located inside a casino on a spaceship. (And who said originality was dead.)

The plot is a combination of the typical “jailbreak” and “last job” plots found in many comics and films. But the believable characters and subtle social commentary keep it from being trite.

Pride and Prejudice at 200: the best Jane Austen small-screen adaptations
Forget Oscar-tipped films and lush BBC dramatisations – the Lizzie Bennet Diaries is an addictive bi-weekly retelling of Pride and Prejudice for the web generation

Jane Austen has been providing us with Sunday-evening viewing fodder ever since someone had the ratings-winning idea of putting gowns and tight breeches on primetime TV. But as Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy celebrate their 200th anniversary of appearing in print, the best Austen adaptation around at the moment isn't an Oscar-tipped film or a lush BBC dramatisation – it's a series of 10-minute YouTube videos, with accompanying in-character tweets. And it's modern-day. And American.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries calls itself an "innovative, original episodic video and social media series produced for the web". Actually, it's an addictive bi-weekly retelling of Pride and Prejudice, in which Darcy is a hipster, Lizzie is a beleaguered grad student and her mother is just as desperate to get her married off as in the original.

Sundance '13 Review: Austenland
Director: Jerusha Hess

Screenwriters: Jerusha Hess and Shannon Hale

Cast: Keri Russell, Jennifer Coolidge, Bret McKenzie, Jj Feild, James Callis, Georgia King, and Jane Seymour.

Official Synopsis: Jane’s life-size paper doll of Mr. Darcy and her “I Love Darcy” tote may be tattered, but even in her thirties, she hasn’t grown out of her obsession with all things Jane Austen. Careworn by love, she saves enough to fulfill her dream of stepping into Austen’s world and heads to Austenland for an “immersive” vacation to eschew all things modern. And it couldn’t be more perfect. There’s an imposing manor with verdant grounds for afternoon promenades, rosy-faced servants, trusty steeds for hunting expeditions, gilded drawing rooms for evenings spent in polite conversation, and, yes, gallant young suitors. Unfortunately, due to limited funds, she’s relegated to lesser quarters and drearier costumes than fellow bachelorette guests, but her...

Felicity Jones and the buzz about Hysteria
Her new film is about the invention of the vibrator, and there is a YouTube campaign to cast her in Fifty Shades of Grey. Emine Saner meets actor and serial bonnet-wearer Felicity Jones

Every profile of Felicity Jones tends to breathlessly announce that the actor is on the brink of superstardom, though since these interviews go back to 2008, you wonder how long this can continue. "I understand it," she says. "It's a way of selling something. I think you have to zone a lot of those things out, and people will take notice when you do something interesting."

Of course, judging success by fame is too blunt a measure for an actor who insists she picks her jobs according to how interesting she finds them, not on whether they will catapult her on to magazine covers: she turned down the lead in the big-budget Mirror Mirror, with Julia Roberts as the evil queen,...

Cinquante nuances de Grey (2015)
And Now They’re Writing Fifty Shades–ish Sex Scenes Into Jane Austen
Cinquante nuances de Grey (2015)
Because Fifty Shades of Grey is an excuse to do just about anything, e-publisher Clandestine Classics will be releasing new editions of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet, Northanger Abbey, and, awesomely, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with steamy sex scenes added in.  To anyone who might point out that this idea is the working definition of "fan fiction," well, Fifty Shades started as "just fan fiction," and you see what happened there. Also, aren't you a little bit curious about the old-timey submarine sex? Be honest.

Jane Austen
Classic literature gets sexed up: 'Hands on yonder branch!'
Jane Austen
Jane Austen and zombies? Over. Now, thanks to 50 Shades of Grey, it’s Jane Austen and steamy sex scenes. Total-e-Bound Publishing has introduced Clandestine Classics, a collection of novels that have been raised — or lowered? — to guilty pleasure status. Allow us to quote from some of the descriptions:

Pride & Prejudice: “Electrifying sexual tension soon leads to an unexpected kiss and Elizabeth’s world is turned upside down.” You can do better. That doesn’t do the excerpt justice.

Jane Eyre: “He demands her abject surrender. In his strong and athletic arms, Jane submits to his darkest desires and discovers hers are every bit as searing,...

Jeremy Piven in Talks to Lead ITV’s Mr. Selfridge
With his brilliant leading role in HBO’s Entourage now behind him after the show ended with its eighth and final season last year, it looks like Jeremy Piven might be crossing the Atlantic to come to the UK for his next part.

ITV are in negotiations with Piven to take the lead in Mr. Selfridge, a ten-part series that will chronicle the life of the eponymous Harry Gordon Selfridge, the retail magnate who founded Selfridges, one of the leading UK department stores, second only to Harrods.

The historical mini-series will be based on Lindy Woodhead’s original book, Shopping, Seduction, and Mr. Selfridge, and Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’ Diary) has adapted the script for Jon Jones (Going Postal) to direct, with Davies and Jones having worked together already for ITV adapting Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey.

“Mr. Selfridge is set in London in 1909 at a time when wealthy women...

Felicity Jones Will Lead Ralph Fiennes’ ‘The Invisible Woman’
A few months ago,we reported that Ralph Fiennes had a shortlist of actresses in mind for his sophomore directing effort, The Invisible Woman. News on the project has been rather quiet as of late, but we now have confirmation of the female lead, thanks to The Daily Mail (via ThePlaylist). As they tell us, Like Crazy star Felicity Jones will play Ellen Ternan, a woman who had a hugely controversial affair with the great Charles Dickens for over 13 years, despite the fact he was married — and some 27 years her senior.

Jones — who also recently grabbed the female lead in Warren Beatty‘s long-gestating Howard Hughes biopic — is very much a star on the rise. She beat off competition from such talented actresses as Carey Mulligan (her Northanger Abbey co-star), Abbie Cornish and Imogen Poots, a sign that she has a lot to offer, and this role will certainly demand a lot itself.
