When a horror movie villain is good, they can make even the worst movies watchable if not enjoyable. When they're great, they can become some of the biggest entertainment icons in film history. But when they're bad? Oh, bother...
From cliched ghost children to cheap cash-grab-creatures using intellectual property in the public domain, the last few decades have introduced some truly horrific (in the bad way) additions to the genre that prove not every ghoul is cut out for the silver scream. We braved popular blockbusters, maligned remakes, and indie cult classics, scrutinizing the headlining monsters and murderers of each to assess their originality, design, and how they support their respective stories overall. We found a few truly terrible films were nearly rescued by an antagonist that met these standards with flying colors (our compliments to young Brahms).

Stoner culture and horror movies go together like chips and queso—a match made in heaven (or perhaps hell). There’s something about the mind-expanding vibes of stoner humor mixed with the surreal, the gory, and the downright absurd that makes this subgenre irresistible. Whether it’s the paranoia of supernatural forces, the dark hilarity of a hapless stoner fighting demons, or the trippy visual stylings of a psychedelic horror trip, stoner horror films offer something uniquely enjoyable.
The appeal probably lies in the way these films can blend laughter and terror. Stoner protagonists are often laid-back, lovable underdogs thrust into insane scenarios, bringing an everyman charm that audiences root for. These films don’t just deliver scares—they also lean into the bizarre, often embracing wildly imaginative plots that break traditional horror conventions. With their mix of self-awareness, satire, and creative insanity, stoner horror movies are perfect for those...

David Schmoeller's 1989 film "Puppet Master" was almost going to be a theatrical release in the summer of 1989, but pivoted to the VHS market at the last minute. Looking at the 1989 supper movie season, one can see why producer Charles Band made the decision. "Puppet Master" would have opened against "Batman," "Ghostbusters II," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," "Back to the Future Part II," "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," "License to Kill," and "Lethal Weapon 2." There were just too many blockbusters it would've had to compete with.
Its movement to the straight-to-video market might have reduced its prestige, but "Puppet Master" spawned many, many sequels (not to mention a few crossovers) that persist to this day (the most recent "Puppet Master" film was released in 2022). The killer puppets in the film have become minor horror icons and often serve as the face of Full Moon Features, a...

Inspiration strikes at the oddest times. Recently, I was watching Blumhouse's "Night Swim" and started thinking about all the strangest killer objects in the history of horror movies. "Where would a swimming pool rank on such a list," I pondered. "Would it rank lower or higher than a hungry bed?" These are the hard-hitting questions that race through my head, only eased by tasks like ranking all the craziest, head-scratchiest, most out-of-bounds killer objects in horror movie history.
We're not talking about flesh and blood killers or animal attackers. Even something like "Santa Jaws" is omitted from contention because while you could blame either the magical pen or sketchbook canvas that brings the Great White Santa to life, it's still a jingle-jangling shark gobbling up victims. This list is dedicated to deadly things that should not kill. Monstrous versions of household items that spring to life and slay the innocent with a most baffling reaction.

A cursory glance at B-movie maven Charles Band’s filmography reveals a long-standing fascination with little creatures, permeating a great number of Full Moon Features’ productions. The diminutive monsters lend themselves well to Full Moon’s latest merchandising venture, blind box collectibles dubbed Tiny Terrors.
The first series features 10 classic Full Moon characters with odds between 1/24 and 1/8: Blade, Tunneler, Leech Woman, Torch, and Six Shooter from the Puppet Master franchise, Jack Attack and Baby Oopsie from Demonic Toys, Radu from Subspecies, Eebee from Evil Bong, and The Gingerdead Man. Blade and Eebee also have translucent chase variants.
Wrapped in foil packaging within a 4.75″ box, each vinyl figure stands between about 3″ and 4.5″ inches tall. Tunneler is the shortest, since he’s bent over in attack position — a fine concept, though in practice it’s more difficult to display than the rest — while Torch is the biggest, thanks to his helmet spear.

Film industry cynics may take one look at a newly announced low-budget comedy called Barbenheimer and a poster that uses Barbie’s iconic pink font over a picture of a nuclear explosion and features the tagline “D-Cup, A-Bomb,” and immediately assume it’s simply a shameless attempt to cash in on a very recent cultural phenomenon. And those cynics would be absolutely correct, says Charles Band, the prolific B-movie icon who has been making low-budget horror comedies since the early 1970s.
“It’s 100 percent true,” he says. “But it’s also an opportunity to have fun with the bizarre coupling of these two movies and the combination of Barbie’s vibe and the darkness of Oppenheimer. You mix that together and you have such an opportunity for dark humor.”

Plot: When a computer hacker unlocks an advanced Artificial Intelligence program called AImee, this artificial femme fatale gradually takes over his life and sets out to destroy anyone who opposes her.
Review: Full Moon founder Charles Band has always had his eye out for the “next big thing” in entertainment and technology. He was one of the pioneers of the home video age, having started his own video distribution company in 1978. He cashed in on the brief 3-D resurgence in the early ‘80s. Full Moon’s 1993 film Arcade drew attention for the amount of CGI it featured. He started his own streaming service (FullMoonFeatures.com). So it’s no surprise that he happens to be the director of the movie that stars “the very first AI-created femme fatale in film history”. That would be AImee, the title character in the new Full Moon project AImee: The Visitor.

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" were meant to be counter-programming for each other. They both opened in theaters on July 21, 2023, and one can practically hear the studio executives at both Universal and Warner Bros. positing that a younger audience would be dropped off to see the PG-13-rated "Barbie" while adults would sidle into the theater next door to watch "Oppenheimer." What no one seemed to predict was that there was a great deal of overlap between the two films' intended audiences, and a grassroots campaign began to see the two pictures as the ultimate double feature. The phenomenon nicknamed Barbenheimer began. Any number of unauthorized Barbenheimer T-shirts can be purchased online, and many managed to see both films on the same weekend. Rather than siphoning money from one another, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" buoyed each other, each one adding to the other's success. Both films are...

Earlier this year, Full Moon founder Charles Band announced that the Demonic Toys franchise would be continuing with another spin-off film that focuses on just one of the evil toys. After making Baby Oopsie, Baby Oopsie 2: Murder Dolls, and Baby Oopsie 3: Burn Baby Burn, writer/director William Butler moved on to a different Demonic Toys spin-off: Demonic Toys: Jack Attack. That movie is now in post-production, and in the new episode of his Full Moon Universe YouTube series, Band has shared the trailer! You can check it out in the embed at the bottom of this article.
We don’t have a plot synopsis for Demonic Toys: Jack Attack at this time, but Band has said that “It’s gonna be another Billy Butler mad movie, sparing no expense with death and weirdness and teeth and biting.” That said, the newly released trailer does give an idea of the story being told.

After Puppet Master, Subspecies is undoubtedly Full Moon’s most successful franchise. The two are similar in that they both have an intricate central mythology that is expanded upon over time, and while both have their share of quirky humor, the films are much more serious in tone than other notable Full Moon franchises like Gingerdead Man or Evil Bong. The two series, however, also have their share of stark differences. For one thing, the Puppet Master series has spawned 15 films to date: 13 official entries from the home studio, plus a crossover by the Sci-Fi Channel and a remake. They also play it fast and loose in terms of continuity. Many different screenwriters have come and gone, adding to and contradicting the established mythology—sometimes in equal doses.
Subspecies, meanwhile, is only just now seeing the release of its fifth entry after a twenty-five year gap since the last sequel,...

Happy Friday, everyone! With the weekend upon us, I thought for this edition of “From Streams to Screams,” I’d put together a real mind-bender of a list for you, where all 29 films dabble in some form of WTFery. Whether its delivering up full-blown cinematic chaos, or characters (and/or the movies themselves) going completely off the rails, and even a few stories that will leaving you scratching your head at the end, without a doubt, these bizarrely entertaining but utterly charming films will keep your mind warped for years to come.

Full Moon Features, founded by producer and director Charles Band in 1989, is world-renowned for wild films like Puppet Master, Castle Freak, Subspecies, Evil Bong and many, many more. But nestled among Full Moon’s vast entertainment universe sits Moonbeam Entertainment, the ’90s imprint that housed Band’s series of imaginative and successful fantasy films.
Beginning in 1993 and continuing well into the late ’90s, Moonbeam Entertainment released dozens of remarkable (and hugely popular) horror, sci-fi and fantasy movies made for children and families. Now, Full Moon is bringing back many of those marvelous pictures from the Moonbeam library, starting with the film that started it all: Prehysteria, released on Special Edition Blu-ray on October 9th.

Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise is, without a doubt, one of the most influential and enduring series in horror history. The property wouldn't have been as popular without its lead villain, Freddy Krueger, who stood in stark contrast to slashers of his decade; the sadistic wise-cracker was a foil to mute brutes like Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Leatherface. And "The Springwood Slasher" wouldn't have struck such a powerful chord were he not portrayed by Robert Englund, whose gait, mannerism, and smile (iconic even through layers of latex) became as integral to Freddy as the core mythologies Craven penned.
Proof of Robert Englund and Krueger's inseparability was aptly illustrated when fans soundly rejected 2010's A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot produced by New Line/Warner Bros. When another actor (Jackie Earle Haley) donned the infamous sweater, fedora, and bladed glove, hardcore "Fred Heads" had none of it.

Some horror movie monsters instantly achieve iconic status and proceed to slash, mutilate and maim their way through an ever-increasing stack of sequels until the inevitable jump-the-shark moment when they’re shelved (until it’s time for a gritty, dark reboot).
Others … well, others don’t quite get that chance. For every Michael Myers, there’s a dozen wannabes stalking the shadows of lesser-known horror films, just trying their hardest to scare people. They fail miserably, of course, but where would we be as a civilization without the likes of …

Shared, multi-franchise universes are all the rage right now, with many studios jumping on board to milk the cash cow. Cinelinx takes a look back at the five best combine universes in film.
The Avengers have made shared universes the big film craze of recent years. DC/Warner Bros. is planning to copy Marvel/Disney’s unified universe success with their own cross-franchise world, anchored by the Justice League. Disney is also spreading out its Star Wars universe, with annual solo films alternating between the main franchise and spin-offs featuring characters like Obi-Wan, Yoda and Boba Fett. Universal Studios has begun building their own monster-verse, starting with Dracula Untold. Fox is planning to merge their X-Men/Fantastic Four franchises. Paramount is looking at sequels and spin-offs to the Transformers series, making it into a multi-franchise story. Sony is toying with the idea of a combined universe built around the legend of Robin Hood,...

Even though you’re probably searching for redemption after last year’s disastrous reboot of the Leprechaun franchise, don’t assume Gnome Alone will provide the cheeky pint-sized fun that Dylan Postl and company failed to deliver. Copying the Celtic horror franchise almost verbatim, directors Timothy Woodward Jr. and John Michael Elfers enlist Mini-Me himself to play a pervy little gnome who lusts for blood and timely death-related zingers (sound familiar?).
Unfortunately, there’s no horror to be found as Verne Troyer hobbles around dressed like an angry lawn ornament, barely standing up to your kneecap, but a few genuine laughs are available for those who love a good tongue-in-cheek death scene oozing with B-Movie antics. It’s certainly nowhere near as horrid as Leprechaun: Origins, but then again, that’s like comparing apples to rotting, festering oranges covered in mold, flies, and shit – Anything would be better. Well, Gnome Alone is your Anything.

Gingerclown might be the strangest damn horror movie I review this year, a fate I valiantly accepted after discovering that rookie director Balázs Hatvani created the very first 3D horror comedy in Hungarian history. Hatvani’s ambitions are sky-high, but a horrid production quickly drags Gingerclown down to an Earthly realm filled with hammy acting, perverse puppeteering, and genre sensibilities that can’t decide between being a Gothic house of horrors or a slapstick comedy gag.
Filing Hatvani’s film under “horror” is an insult to movies that begrudgingly attempt a scare or two, even when laughs are at a premium, as this haunted attraction isn’t worth a lick in the terror department. With each passing moment of high-school-crushing and laughably inferior showmanship, the voices of Tim Curry and Brad Dourif are lost amidst stumbling villains with zero mobility. Cussing teacups, Eastern-European-Californians, shoddy costumes – what the hell did I just watch?...

We recently reported that the Mistress of the Dark is returning soon to host horror flicks in Hulu’s 13 Nights of Elvira. Now you can get a taste of the humor to come, as Hulu and Brainstorm Media have provided us with a clip in which Elvira offers witty remarks on 1985’s Trancers and Oscar winner Helen Hunt before imagining what she would say upon winning an Academy Award.
Cassandra Peterson stars as the legendary horror hostess on Hulu’s 13 Nights of Elvira, streaming exclusively on the site beginning October 19th and running through Halloween. Each night Elvira will introduce a fright film and offer occasional comedic commentary—a setup similar to her Movie Macabre performances. Here’s the official schedule:
Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle of Death (1989) Sunday, Oct. 19 Puppet Master (1989) Monday, Oct. 20 Demonic Toys (1992) Tuesday, Oct. 21 Hobgoblins (1988) Wednesday, Oct. 22 The Gingerdead Man (2005) Thursday, Oct. 23 Dollman (1991) Friday, Oct.

For as long as there are horror and sci-fi movies of, shall we say, questionable quality there will be...Elvira. The Mistress of the Dark returns to the small screen in a new Hulu series called 13 Nights of Elvira and this time, she'll be poking fun at a new crop of films with her usual flavor of humor.
The titles include Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, Puppet Master, Demonic Toys, Hobgoblins, The Gingerdead Man, Dollman, Trancers, Oblivion, Shrunken Heads, Hideous, Evil Bong, Seedpeople and Night of the Living Dead.

Hulu’s heart is on fire for Elvira. The Mistress of Dark is headed to the subscription-based and (perhaps soon-to-be slightly less) ad-supported “premium streaming TV destination” for a brand new series this Halloween season. 13 Nights of Elvira will feature Cassandra Peterson once again suited up in what very well may be the original stereotypical sexy girl’s Halloween costume to reprise her dual roles of Alistair Cooke and Roger Ebert for the B grade horror movie set. The program is a streaming iteration of Peterson’s cult classic Elvira’s Movie Macabre (which is also currently available on Hulu), and will feature pithy intros, and poignant, punny commentary from the self-proclaimed Personification of Instant Gratification. Elvira will playfully praise and skewer the following terrifically terrible flicks on the daily starting October 19: Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle of Death, Puppet Master, Demonic Toys, Hobgoblins, The Gingerdead Man, Dollman,...

Now Shock Till You Drop report that the lovely lady will return on October 19th to give her take on the likes of Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, Evil Bong, Seed People, Shrunken Heads, and finally on Halloween night, Night of the Living Dead. Good day, voyeurs of all things salaciously gelatinous. Go back into the 1970s this weekend and celebrate both Record Store Day on April 19 and stoner holiday 4/20 on, well, that day. One of the key components to a successful horror film is a memorable adversary for the protagonists. Often, the villain is human, or once was. Sometimes the foe is a possessed home, or a revenant that just won’t die. In rare cases, the monster is something a little more… unusual. As evidenced in the list below, we sometimes discover the enemy is more bizarre than we could ever dream: evil objects, demonic playthings, even malevolent pastries... monsters come in many forms. With that said, it’s time to take a walk down memory lane and look at ten more of the most unconventional monsters in horror cinema history. [Check out our first ten here.] Note: To avoid a list that features nothing but SyFy Channel originals, we are only considering films that premiered in a medium other than cable television. Dolly Dearest The Child’s Play franchise is hands-down better than Dolly Dearest, and we...
