Slip is about a girl that not only talks with dead people, but also learns whet they know and takes revenge for them in the ways you like to see in a movie. Not a bad concept, it just needed to be played out a little better with the casting and dialog. The characters were just short of being believable but that may have had more to do with the direction. The dialog was a little uncharacteristic of the characters. A couple of interesting special effects, but not too much of that either. Some good location scenery and cinematography seemed well done. Some of the scenes were a little off. If you're looking for a solid B movie with an interesting plot, then this is for you.
This film has been "haunting" me, no pun intended. It makes you think about what things you will regret and wish you could change after you are gone. It left me with the feeling of my favorite Star Trek NG episode, "Inner Light" which explores what you would want to be remembered for, what's important in life - yet it is done with ass-kicking action and a sexy star! Budget shouldn't be a consideration when reviewing someone's art, so I am giving this an excellent rating for story, character, performance and direction. I would love to see what this director could do with a seven figure financing deal! It's refreshing to see a truly original concept make it to the screen. Support Indie cinema and tell Hollywood you are sick of sequels, remakes and rehashes. Rent this film made by a true storyteller!
I like seeing an indie film take a genre and mix it up so that it gives an unexpected twist. Great cast of actors for it being your first film. I would recommend this film to anyone who is in love with Boy's in the Hood with a mix of The Sixth Sense. The character Tre should get best lead gangster of the year for his performance. I really liked the coloring of the desert scene. There are a lot of different ways to go in order to set the tone in the desert, and I think you guys hit the nail on the head. The story seemed to slow a bit toward the end of the second act, but it picked up quickly in the third act coming to the end. If this film is any indication of the stories the production team have in their pocket, then I can't wait for your next release. Hopefully you get a bigger budget!
why a grate of 7? well the idea behind the movie good, but it seems like the writer lacked the proper creativeness to Relay the idea fully to paper, and it doesn't help that the director didn't notice that the movie was missing a certain something, the scenes wherened tied together probably, the characters didn't stay in character so you don't get, for the lag of a better word, get drawn into the movie. And the certain scenes feel forced. "we need to get this into the movie, lets just put it here." But all in all a good idea, if nothing els check it out for the idea alone, the acting is slightly above average, just wish it had another director and maybe a co-writer...
Considering this is a low budget direct-to-DVD feature by first time filmmakers, I am very impressed. "Slip" is well shot and acted. The only exception being that Jill Small underplays her lead role too much. Don Turner in the lead is a standout and Hosea Simmons as the main villain steals every scene he's in. I wouldn't be surprised if these two show up and hold their own in bigger productions in the future.
The story is very interesting if not original. There are some clever moments and even a few that are quite touching. The film has a little of everything, some snappy dialog, some gore, gang violence, a little sentimentality, and supernatural themes. It's a mix of genres that is its strength and sometimes its weakness. You almost never can predict what's going to happen next and yet it feels overlong in its final reels when all the elements come together. There are also a few impressive special effects. And the music, appropriate. A fine first film for all involved.
