      Spectrum gets serious

'Spectrum Strikes Back' is a fine example of the show's proclivity for paranoid security procedures. A clandestine meeting place, code names and even an entire hunting lodge that lowers into a sealed-off bunker, perfect for those quiet wilderness getaways. Actually, that lodge is almost the star of this episode, what with how it nearly crushes everyone involved and occupies the camera's attention. Speaking of which, why would the whole thing need to be lowered? Surely some sort of elevator below would've been far more workable.

Anyhoo, the top brass is gathered in one place to discuss developments in the war with the Mysterons, including a detector and special gun (because bullets haven't been enough, I guess); and it's all placed in jeopardy when Captain Indigo is replicated and traps everyone in the bunker while the lodge comes down. A drawn-out battle ensues, the gun works beautifully, and all involved enjoy a hearty meal of wild game. It's a little silly when the sets are the focal point, and it starts to feel like a time-killer watching the floor descend. But there's the unusual mind for continuity in picking up threads from previous episodes ('Noose of Ice', 'Operation Time').

      • Trivia
This episode was the first and final time since the pilot that a leading officer of Spectrum would be killed and reconstructed by the Mysterons. However, as producers did not want to kill off one of the regular officers that viewers would by now be used to, they introduced Captain Indigo as an extra captain in order to achieve this. Like Captain Brown in the pilot, this would mark Captain Indigo's one and only appearance in a story.
      • Goofs
In this episode, the writers try to establish that the only thing that can kill a Mysteron agent is high-voltage electricity and also that Spectrum has made an anti-Mysteron gun that uses electriticty. However in both previous and following episodes we see normal guns with bullets killing Mysteron agents. Plus the Mysteron Gun does not appear in any other episodes except this one.
