Four-time Academy Award nominee Ed Harris has starred in his fair share of movie and TV westerns, always delivering a memorable turn no matter what his character calls for. Whether starring as the Man in Black in Westworld or playing Virgil Cole in the underrated Appaloosa, it's apparent that Harris has a fondness for playing cowboys along the American frontier.
In 2013, Harris starred in a lesser-known western called Sweetwater by filmmaking siblings Logan and Noah Miller. Despite a few overwrought dramatic sequences, the epic showdowns, blazing gunfights, and visceral action scenes help compensate. Now that the film is available to stream on Prime Video, giving subscribers an idea of what to expect, where the movie excels, and how Ed Harris and co-star Jason Isaacs save will help decide if Sweetwater is digestible.

The popularity of the Western genre has endured for decades, with some of the greatest films in the genre having literary roots. Authors like Lauran Paine and Ron Hansen have successfully captured the gritty landscape and character types of the Western genre in their writing and directors have elevated their work with the use of their film knowledge. The Old West provides an ideal setting for themes of conflict and individualism. Directors like John Ford and the Coen brothers use their skills to actualize such factors in the visual medium.
Oftentimes, it's books that have already attempted to expand the Western genre that inspire innovative directors because of their added components of other genres like comedy and crime. Unlike some of the worst book-to-film adaptations, many of those in the Western genre are faithful to the original text. There are countless examples of Western films inspired by books, but a...

Don't let anyone tell you Westerns are dead. They're apparently still alive and well on Netflix, where this week the docudrama "Wyatt Earp and the Cowboy War" has been steadily climbing the streaming charts. According to viewership data site Flixpatrol, the series about the early American lawman is currently being bested in the top 10 most-watched English-language Netflix shows chart by just two other series: true crime docuseries "American Murder: Laci Peterson" and inexplicably popular girlboss rom-com "Emily in Paris."
If your Boomer dad hasn't yet told you about "Wyatt Earp and the Cowboy War," let us do the honors. It's a six-episode Netflix-exclusive series that's a hybrid of narrative nonfiction, talking-head documentary, and intense reenactments. Here's the official synopsis that accompanied the show's trailer on YouTube: "The legendary feud between Wyatt Earp and Ike Clanton unfolds through vivid reenactments in this gritty docudrama about the gunfight that defined an era.

This article contains spoilers for The Dead Don't Hurt (2024).
Viggo Mortensen's latest movie, The Dead Don't Hurt, is the first time audiences have seen the actor in a Western since Appaloosa in 2008. Mortensen continues to be a versatile actor and Renaissance man, hopping easily from high fantasies like The Lord of the Rings to gritty and adventurous Westerns. Especially in the early 2000s. Still, Mortensen has kept away from the genre, favoring variety in his projects. From dramas based on true-life experiences like Green Book (2018) and Thirteen Lives (2022) to adaptations of well-known novels like The Road (2009) and On the Road (2012) -- he's never nailed himself down to one type of film.

Viggo Mortensen returns with The Dead Don't Hurt, a Western where he wears multiple hats, including director, writer, and star. The story focuses on Vivienne, played by Vicky Krieps, as she navigates love, independence, and challenges in the male-dominated Wild West. Mortensen's non-chronological storytelling adds depth, revealing character fates early on, leading to a nuanced exploration of love and forgiveness.
Viggo Mortensen is not only returning to the Western genre, but also to the director's chair, with the moving drama The Dead Don't Hurt. While best known to some for his turn as Aragorn in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mortensen has a well-regarded history in the Western genre, starring in the likes of 1990's Young Guns II, 2004's Hidalgo and 2008's Appaloosa. Although its unlikely that it will ever reach the same prominence that it did during the 1950s and 1960s, the Western genre seems to have made a comeback in the 21st century. Prestige television shows like Godless and Deadwood have proved that adding historical insight to tales of the Wild West doesnt have to be counterintuitive to the story, as westerns can be both historically accurate and exciting. While there have been many interesting new takes on the standard Western narrative that have merged it with other genres, theres also something remarkable about a deliberately old-fashioned crowd-pleaser that isnt afraid of being a throwback. While largely forgotten since its release, the Ed Harris-directed film Appaloosa is an exciting historical thriller that contains some of the hottest moments in the history of Westerns.

Viggo Mortensen loves him a good Western. The actor has starred in several of them, 2008’s “Appaloosa,” 2004’s “Hidalgo,” and even more recent arthouse international films like “Jauja” and “Far from Men” employ elements of this genre. Mortensen has also moved into writing and directing features in recent years, following the critically-acclaimed “Falling,” and so his next directorial effort, “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” is also returning to the dangerous Western frontier.

In a cover story for Harper’s Bazaar, Zellweger revealed that film producers previously asked her to drink wine before nude scenes.
“There have been times I have been in, you know, on set, where a producer’s ready for me to go ahead and take my clothes off: ‘Here, drink this wine, ’cause then you’ll do it,'” Zellweger said. “And, you know, I’m not gonna take that wine, but I would like a phone. ’Cause I have a phone call I need to make right now.”
Back in 2001, Zellweger addressed her hesitation at nudity in films, telling Premiere (via Page Six) at the time that production on “Jerry Maguire” stopped after she objected to being topless.

In the former’s directorial debut, the pair play a father and son facing up to the older man’s dementia. It offers 80-year-old Henriksen the meatiest role of his astonishing career
Viggo Mortensen first met Lance Henriksen when he shot him dead. Mortensen, the Lord of the Rings star and three-time best actor Oscar nominee, was facing off the older actor – a veteran of more than 200 movies including Aliens and The Terminator – in the 2008 western Appaloosa.
“There were so many bullets flying around; I don’t think any one person can take the credit for killing me,” smiles Henriksen, his voice sandpapery but sweet. As we wait for Mortensen to join our video call, he says he is tip-top today. “I turned 80. Exclusive: Viggo Mortensen is returning to the Sundance Film Festival for the first time since 2016 when Captain Fantastic made a big splash and led eventually to a Best Actor Oscar nomination for the star. This time however he is adding director and screenwriter to his resume, with his behind the camera debut, Falling, which is set to officially close the festival and is part of the Premieres section but will start screening on Friday. I was invited to see it ahead of time a few weeks ago at a UTA screening and a few days later sat down in a Santa Monica restaurant to talk about the film with its director and co-star.
Falling is produced by Daniel Bekerman of Scythia Films and Chris Curling of Zephyr Films together with Mortensen, who previously produced Everyone Has a Plan, Far from Men and Jauja through Perceval Pictures.

According to makeup department head Tarra Day, “Godless” is unique in the western genre simply because of its “strong women characters.” Day has a lot of experience with cowboys in the Wild West, having worked on such films as “Appaloosa” (2008) and “The Magnificent Seven” (2016). But in most cases “the women are prostitutes or girlfriends or wives. There hasn’t been a lot of room for female characters to lead the western.” That changed with this Netflix limited series. Watch our exclusive video interview with Day above.

Westerns are one of those rare, uniquely American film genres. They dominated film screens for years, were amongst some of the finest stories told in film, and they are films that have created some of the most compelling characters in film history.
But somewhere around the brilliant, sprawling mini-series Lonesome Dove in 1989, the western lost its appeal to the mass audience. They suddenly seemed out of touch and with the exception of movies like Young Guns (and its sequel). In recent years, however, westerns have been making an unmistakable resurgence in both film and television.
They didn’t completely disappear, though. In fact a few would pop up every few years in the 90s, some of the most notable include Unforgiven in 1992, Dances with Wolves in 1990, 1994’s Maverick and 1993’s Tombstone. They’d make a splash and everyone would talk about how it was going to revive the genre but alas it never really happened.

Viggo Mortensen should be a rock star. Like, a bigger rock star than he already is. The dude makes fascinating choices with his career. Yes, he lands in super-mega-franchises like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But he also collaborates with David Cronenberg, tries offbeat Westerns in Appaloosa and Hidalgo, and, if this news can be confirmed, might play a vampire-smuggler in a long-gestating project. That would be Millenium Films. The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a movie centered on a ship that transports Dracula from Transylvania to England. Neil Marshall has been set to direct the feature for some time now, working off a Bragi F. Schut screenplay adapted from the novels of Bram Stoker.
