Special effects master and creature creator Stan Winston is best known for making the monsters seen in such hit films as "The Terminator," "Invaders from Mars," "Aliens," "Alien Nation," "Predator," "Jurassic Park," "Congo," and "The Relic." He also provided makeup and other eerie beings for "The Thing," "Starman," "Edward Scissorhands," "Batman Returns," and "The Island of Dr. Moreau." He received an Oscar nomination in 1982 for his work on the robot comedy "Heartbeeps." His monsters indelibly changed genre cinema for decades, and his death in 2008 was an immeasurable loss. 

Winston also directed a few notable projects. He directed the music videos for Guns N' Roses and Michael Jackson. Winston also helmed the amusement parks-only 3-D "Terminator" interquel "T2 3-D: Battle Across Time" in '96. Winston only ever directed two feature films: the very, very, very odd cop-teams-up-with-a-gnome comedy "A Gnome Named Gnorm" in 1990, and the horrifying monster revenge thriller "Pumpkinhead" in 1988.

The Pumpkinhead movies focus more on the mechanics of summoning the monster rather than providing an origin story for it. The monster takes on the identity of the summoner and gains more traits of the summoner over time. The only way to kill Pumpkinhead is for the summoner to die, as their souls are tied together, but it can be brought back with enough blood and vengeance.

The cult classic horror franchise Pumpkinhead involves a monster with an origin, identity, and powers that change throughout the movies. In the Pumpkinhead movies, people with enough hatred and vengeance in their hearts seek out a witch who will bring to life the eponymous villain. Though the witch provides vague warnings ahead of time, every summoner ends up regretting their choice after Pumpkinhead starts ruthlessly killing its targets and any person who gets in the way of its mission.

The Pumpkinhead film franchise consists of four installments, with the original movie being the strongest in terms of storytelling and character development. The later sequels, such as Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud and Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings, suffer from a lack of cohesive storytelling and character motivation. Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes, despite its limitations as a made-for-television sequel, is a gory and morally ambiguous entry that successfully plays with the franchise's formula.

While the Pumpkinhead film franchise features a terrifying horror villain, not all the sequels are as interesting as their title character, making some of the movies stand out as better than others. Around these parts we're Huge fans of the Pumpkinhead creature, but judging from a cinematic standpoint, this big bad has gotten one raw deal after another. The original film was great, and its sequels got progressively more horrid one after the other.

Could this franchise get back on track? It sure couldn't do any worse!

The original Pumpkinhead was produced by the De Laurentiis Entertainment Group, headed up by Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis. De Laurentiis went on to produce Hannibal and Red Dragon.

For the rest of the franchise, the Motion Picture Corporation of America (Mpca) headed up by Brad Krevoy took the reins and is now back to produce the rebooted series.

The ’88 film starred Lance Henriksen as a man who conjures up a gigantic vengeance demon called Pumpkinhead to destroy the teenagers who accidentally killed his son.

While Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings is indeed bad, it's watchable...

The 1980s creature feature Pumpkinhead paved the way for three sequels (three!), a video game, a short-lived comic book series at Dark Horse and the endless rumors that a reboot might be in the works. Seriously, these things have come and gone so many times, I've lost track. There's a report today that Brad Krevoy - who produced Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings, Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes and Pumpkinhead: Blood Feud - is aiming to reboot the monster that Stan Winston realized on the screen back in 1988.

You read that headline right! Talk about completely random. Seems Raisin Bran decided to use an old Pumpkinhead costume for a promo however it's suppose to be a British extra terrestrial, but we horror fans know better. This is a funny video but sad at the same time. Our response was more along the lines of "Poor, poor Pumpkinhead, has the recession hit you too?" Read more if you want to waist a couple minutes of your life.

Horror fans should instantly recognize that this supposed alien is none other than the vengeance-loving witch-spawn Pumpkinhead, first created by Stan Winston in the 1988 film of the same name. More astute fans will notice that it's not the actual effects creation used in Winston's film, but it does look an awful lot like the one used in Jake West's 2006 sequel, Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes. And by an awful lot, I mean...

An old suit from a Pumpkinhead sequel is being used for a Raisin Bran promo. Naturally, he's not supposed to be Pumpkinhead here; in the commercial he's a British alien known as Miles Melman, but this recycling of the Pumpkinhead suit (outfitted with an extended, and apparent, head piece) gave me a good chuckle. It looks like the Pumpkinhead from Jake West's Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes which means it's a Gary Tunnicliffe creation. Weird.

Wrong Turn 3 director Declan O’Brien will be previewing his new Fox DVD splatter sequel at the fast-approaching East Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, to be held June 5-7 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (11th Avenue between 34th and 39th Streets) in New York City. O’Brien (pictured below with friend), the director of the Sci Fi Channel original movies Rock Monster, Monster Ark and Cyclops, will debut exclusive clips from Wrong Turn 3 (about another group of lost travelers facing off against inbred hillbilly maniacs) at the convention on Sunday.

In addition to his directing chores, O’Brien has also scripted Harpies, The Snake King and Savage Planet for Sci Fi. Stop by this site again over the next couple of days as we begin posting the full schedules (auditorium panels and film programs) for the Fango show.

“You’ve asked me about this in the past—‘What’s your next project?’—and it never ends up being the one that I told you about!” protests director Jake West (pictured) when Fango catches up with him during his brief pause between finishing up postproduction on his new film Doghouse and jetting out to Cannes. Nevertheless, West is happy to talk about some possible future collaborations with Doghouse scripter Daniel Schaffer and producer Terry Stone.

“I’ve got two more projects with Dan that Terry will produce, a couple of scripts that are finished, but they’re nothing to do with Doghouse. One is a satirical horror film—like American Psycho meets Clockwork Orange—titled Killdarlings which is very mad and fun. We’ve also got a project called Rollover which is what I call a ‘revisionist action film,’ a very funny, quirky movie with the Jake West stylings in there.

Hellboy movies director Guillermo del Toro has joined the lineup of the fast-approaching East Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors. The event will be held June 5-7, 2009 at the Jacob K. Prong mainman Tommy Victor, who was recently interviewed by Fangoria (read it here) will be appearing at Fangoria's Weekend Of Horrors in Los Angeles, April 17-19, 2009. Victor, who recently toured with both Ministry and Danzig, will see the release of Prong's Power Of The Damn Mixxxer (read our review) on May 12th, 2009 via 13th Planet Records.

Tommy will be appearing at the Schecter Guitar Research booth for signing sessions throughout the weekend, along with Skumlove, who's new album The Church Of The New Perversion was recently recorded and co-written with Victor.

Music from Skumlove's past album Songs Of Lust And Corrosion were featured on the Award winning Horror-Porn DVD "Grub Girl" and the B-style horror movie Intermedio starring Edward Furlong (Terminator 2) and Amber Benson (Buffy: The Vampire Slayer).

House Of Wax remake director Jaume Collet-Serra (pictured below) has joined the line-up of the upcoming West Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors convention, to be held April 17-19 at the Los Angeles Convention Center (1201 South Figueroa). Attending Sunday, the Barcelona-born Collet-Serra will be previewing his new chiller Orphan at the show. The Warner Bros./Dark Castle picture, about an evil child, opens July 24.

A panel devoted to the Night Of The Demons remake will take place at the next West Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors convention, to be held April 17-19 at the Los Angeles Convention Center (1201 South Figueroa). Appearing at the preview (slotted for Saturday) will be the film’s new Angela, Shannon Elizabeth (pictured) of Scary Movie, Cursed, 13 Ghosts and the first two American Pie movies.

Joining Elizabeth will be her Demons co-stars: Freddy Vs. Jason’s Monica Keena, Tiffany Shepis and Laid To Rest’s Bobbi Sue Luther, as well as director/co-writer Adam Gierasch of Autopsy and his Mother Of Tears/Toolbox Murders co-scripter Jace Anderson. “We will have never-before-seen clips, and we also may bring another surprise actor or two,” says Anderson.

WildClaw Theatre, Chicago’s leading horror stage troupe, will bring their brand of terror and the supernatural to the fast-approaching Chicago edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, to be held March 6-8 at the Wyndham Chicago O’Hare Hotel (6810 North Mannheim Road, Rosemont, Il). On Sunday of the event, the local horror theater stalwarts will discuss their previous shows, screen clips of their most outlandish work, answer questions, talk about their upcoming Zombie Bowling and zombie play, The Revenants, then close out the convention with a round of “Scary-aoke,” where the audience will have the opportunity to act out scenes from their favorite horror flicks.

The independent horror film Plague Town, which Fango’s Michael Gingold called “a nightmare captured on film,” will make its Midwest premiere at the fast-approaching Chicago edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, to be held March 6-8 at the Wyndham Chicago O’Hare Hotel (6810 North Mannheim Road, Rosemont, Il). The screening will be introduced by writer/director David Gregory.

Plague Town is about a group of American travelers lost in the Irish countryside who run afoul of a group of bloodthirsty, disfigured children. Gregory (pictured with actress Kate Aspinwall and victim) makes his feature debut with the movie, having previously helmed nearly 100 genre documentaries and DVD features, including Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Shocking Truth, Portrait: The Making of Henry, Inside Manhunter, Tom Savini: The Early Years, The Godfathers of Mondo and many more.
