Florence Foster Jenkins was a woman of grand exuberance. She’s mostly remembered for her terrible voice, which I suppose is fair. It’s worth noting, however, that she didn’t exactly intend to make comedy albums. It was her irrepressible love of music that drove her to the stage, the recording studio and, by way of generations of blithe dinner parties, into the 21st century.

With that in mind, a Meryl Streep movie seems like an inevitable conclusion. Florence Foster Jenkins’s director (Stephen Frears) and screenwriter (Nicholas Martin) clearly understand both pieces of the character, her fervent fandom and her wobbly voice. In fact, they so thoroughly embrace her passion for music that they suggest it’s what killed her.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Before Streep...

According to a press release from PBS's Masterpiece Classic division, the ratings success of the ITV / PBS collaboration Mr. Selfridge, starring Jeremy Piven as the retail magnate, has lead to the series' renewal. In my review of the show's first season, I found it to be frothy and good-hearted entertainment that was a welcome relief during a spate of otherwise very serious dramas. 'Until a few years ago, I was endlessly playing villainous, smug, posh guys on telly'

Your parents [Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens] were both famous actors. Was following in their footsteps inevitable?

No, my parents didn't particularly encourage me initially. They knew how hard the profession is: just because they'd been successful didn't mean I would be. They weren't like, "I tell you what, why don't we all do a production together?" They said, "You're on your own." I'm really grateful: it made me get out there and hone my taste.

What was your big breakthrough?

Playing Coriolanus at the RSC. I was about 25, and the play had never been done there before with anybody of that age. It got rid of everybody's preconceptions about Coriolanus being a 50-year-old fascist dressed in leather who likes beating people up.

Do you suffer for your art?

No. First and foremost, it's a way of putting bread on the table.

Ruth Wilson might not yet be familiar to most people who see The Lone Ranger in theaters over the Fourth of July weekend, but the British actress is already well established in her native England, having starred on the BBC's Luther and several critically acclaimed miniseries, like Jane Eyre. Starz has announced the full cast for Michael Bay's upcoming eight episode original series "Black Sails," a prequel to the Robert Louis Stevenson's classic "Treasure Island."

Set twenty years before events in the book, the story chronicles the adventures of fabled buccaneer Captain Flint and his men. As already announced, Toby Stephens ("Jane Eyre," "Die Another Day") has been cast in the lead role as Captain Flint.

Aussie actor Luke Arnold ("Rush," "McLeod's Daughters," "Winners and Losers") has been cast as the young John Silver. Zack McGowan ("Shameless") will star as Captain Charles Vane, a rival pirate captain.

It's no secret that Marvel Studios and director Joss Whedon are hard at work planning out the storyline for what happens in The Avengers 2. Directors' group to investigate after Cannes film festival snubs women for Palme d'Or prize

The woman behind the hugely successful new BBC drama Parade's End is leading a campaign to give female directors a better deal in television.

Susanna White, whose adaptation of Ford Madox Ford's four-volume novel is winning widespread acclaim, is a member of Directors UK, a group representing British film and television directors, which has set up an all-women working party to examine the difficulties experienced by aspiring female directors. The move is partly a response to the fact that no women were entered for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes film festival.

White told the Observer that she had only broken into the top ranks of directors with extreme difficulty. "I think my journey has been a very, very, slow one."

Welcoming the new focus, she said: "I'm very keen for this to happen.

Disney's biggest gamble of 2013, Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger, has officially gone into production. There was a point I didn't think this movie would actually happen, but here it is. Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer will lead the pack of actors into the wild west.

The reason I say this movie is a gamble is because Disney is spending $216 million dollars to make the movie, and no Western in the history of cinema has ever made that much money. The highest grossing western of all time is Dances With Wolves, and that only brought in $184 million. I can't believe Disney is pumping this kind of money into a western, because I don't think it's going to make that kind of money back in theaters. Hell, Favreau's Cowboy & Aliens only made a little over $100 million and that mixed both sci-fi and western elements! That should have been a blockbuster, and it wasn't.

Disney's new adaptation of The Lone Ranger has had some rough times getting off the ground. From budget issues, to script rewrites, to even losing a cast member or two, it's been an ordeal that nearly killed the film. It's been getting on track however, and has now officially started filming.

New BBC 2 drama 'Vexed', a 6 x 60 minute detective comedy, started principal photography in Dublin this week with a host of Irish talent involved. The It Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd has been confirmed as host of The Moët British Independent Film Awards, taking place on Sunday 4 December at Old Billingsgate.

This will be the comedian’s first time presenting the ceremony which will cover 18 categories including the Best British Independent Film, sponsored by Moët & Chandon.

Competing for such a prestigious trophy on the night will be Senna, Shame, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Tyrannosaur and We Need to Talk About Kevin.

O’Dowd commented: “I am delighted to be the new host of the Moët British Independent Awards this year and I'm really looking forward to the 4 December. It's a ceremony which cherishes innovation, elegance and class so I’m humbled that they've chosen a host who so clearly lacks any of these things. Expect dancing girls.”

Cary Fukunaga is to follow up his forthcoming big-screen take on Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre with a science-fiction thriller about a hitman tumbling through space, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Spaceless, based on an original screenplay by Jeff Vintar, has Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski on board as producer and has been green-lit by Universal Studios. It concerns an assassin who wakes to find himself floating through space in a suit that is running out of air, fitted with a computer designed to keep him company until he expires. The last thing he remembers is breaking into a space station to carry out a hit, but is he really about to die? Could he be trapped in an artificial reality or simply experiencing the effects of madness?

Ruth Wilson is in negotiations to play the female lead in "The Lone Ranger" movie for Disney Pictures reports Deadline.

Wilson's character is named Rebecca, other details however aren't forthcoming. The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced film stars Armie Hammer as the Masked Man and Johnny Depp as Tonto.

Known for a soft voice and strikingly magnetic screen presence, Wilson scored a Golden Globe nomination in 2006 for playing the titular role in the BBC's superb mini-series adaptation of "Jane Eyre" which also starred Toby Stephens.

She then went on to have a role in the mini-series remake of "The Prisoner", and most recently has been seen playing the former child prodigy turned cold-blooded killer Alice in the Idris Elba-led British police drama "Luther".
