2008-2012 was a great yet frustrating era to be a fan of Marvel cartoons. That brief period of time saw the premiere of some of the very best television that's ever adapted Marvel Comics: "The Spectacular Spider-Man," "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes," and "Wolverine and the X-Men." I both blame and cherish these shows for making me a true Marvel Comics fan.
Yet, all these truly marvelous shows concluded prematurely for infuriating bureaucratic reasons. "Spectacular Spider-Man" ended when Sony ceded some Spider-Man television rights back to Marvel. Meanwhile, "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" was canned to make way for the far inferior (and Marvel Cinematic Universe-synergistic) "Avengers Assemble." Lastly, "Wolverine and the X-Men" never made it to season 2 because the show's financing fell apart.
Series writer-producer Joshua Fine confirmed as much in a 2011 interview. Even worse, season 2 was already in production; it had a season outline,...

India-based Toonz Media Group and Japan’s 1st Place have revealed a strategic partnership aimed at meeting the surging global demand for high-quality anime content, on the sidelines of Hong Kong FilMart.

The X-Men are Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants, but none of them are mightier than Magneto. Perhaps the most powerful of all mutants, Erik Lehnsherr made his first appearance in the comics in 1963 and he has endured the test of time, remaining of the most widely-recognized X-Men characters to this day.
It’s not surprising when there are adaptations in the mainstream quite regularly, from the original X-Men movie series to the recent Disney Plus series X-Men ’97, he’s been at the forefront of many of the classic characters’ most well-known adventures. And his powers – and the drive behind them – continue to captivate audiences.
Magneto is a complicated individual, which makes him a powerful character in many senses of the word. He has the ability to manipulate and move metal with his mind, controlling magnetic fields all around him with ease. He's a longtime enemy of the X-Men, as well...

Toonz Media Group unveiled its new CGI-animated feature “Gummibär and Friends, Operation Cotton Candy” at Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM), bringing YouTube sensation Gummibär to the big screen in partnership with Gummybear International (Gbi).
The spy spoof comedy marks the first theatrical outing for the beloved green gummy bear character, whose 2007 viral hit “I’m a Gummy Bear (The Gummy Bear Song)” has racked up billions of views across digital platforms.
The production has assembled a veteran animation team, with “Amazing Maurice” producer Robert Chandler serving as creative producer and Pete Dodd directing. BAFTA winner Dan Berlinka pens the screenplay.
The plot follows the titular character’s inadvertent entanglement in a high-stakes espionage caper. Joined by martial arts expert Kala and science whiz Harry, Gummibär must save Earth from “colorful destruction” while thinking he’s merely testing cotton candy flavors.
“Gummibär is so cinematic,” Chandler said. “I see his...

Halfway through season 1 and "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" has been gladly drafting its supporting characters and villains from all corners of Marvel Comics. Peter Parker's (Hudson Thames) best friend Nico Minoru (Grace Song) is from "The Runaways," and his schoolboy crush isn't Mary Jane Watson or Liz Allan -- it's Pearl Pangan (Cathy Ang). In the comics, Pearl is a recently-introduced water-themed superhero named Wave. Time will tell if her animated self takes on that identity, or if Nico will become a sorcerer.
The people who do have super-abilities are the series villains, the latest one being Unicorn/Mila Masaryk. True to her name, she can blast an energy beam from a helmet she wears. In this version, the weapon is supplied by Doctor Otto Octavius (Hugh Dancy). Complementing the Unicorn imagery, Mila wears her hair in a mane-like mohawk.

India-headquartered global animation outfit Toonz Media Group is betting big on character-building entertainment, partnering with Blkbx Originals and Mvp Kids to develop a new 3D animated series and Roblox game based on the popular children’s brand.
The deal will see the production of 52 seven-minute episodes aimed at expanding the reach of Mvp Kids’ diverse cast of characters beyond their established book and curriculum empire.
For Toonz, which produces over 10,000 minutes of kids and family content annually, the move represents a strategic push into multi-platform storytelling. The studio, known for collaborations with heavy hitters like Marvel (“Wolverine and the X-Men”) and Universal (“Mostly Ghostly”), will leverage its animation chops to bring Mvp Kids’ message of individuality to the small screen.

There's definitely a sweet spot when it comes to how long a TV series should run. Some go on seemingly forever until they're shallow visages of what they used to be. Then, there are the shows that displayed a ton of promise in just a few episodes but got canceled for one reason or another. When it comes to the latter, you know exactly what we're talking about. Perhaps you were even part of a fan campaign to try to bring one of the following shows back on the air. Sadly, the whims of studio executives know no mercy, even when a show ends on a massive cliffhanger that'll no longer get any resolution.
These are the shows that broke all of our hearts. These series canceled after one season managed to get us invested so quickly, and now, we're left to wonder what might've been had more people tuned in initially.

Toonz Media Group has teamed with Evolutionary Films and Mojo Global Arts on “Minibots,” a new animated feature targeting family audiences, with “Mulan” director Tony Bancroft at the helm. The project, set for release in 2026, was unveiled for pre-sales at AFM 2024.
“Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” scribe Michael Ferris wrote the screenplay, which follows three young geniuses at a summer robotics camp who create sentient mini robots. The story tracks their efforts to protect their creations from a powerful tech company seeking to acquire the technology.
Toonz Media Group CEO P. Jayakumar said the collaboration with Evolutionary Films and Mojo Global Arts “has been a fantastic experience,” expressing confidence in the film’s potential in the global family entertainment market, describing it as a “lively, fun adventure.”
John Adams of Evolutionary Films emphasized the project’s broad appeal: “‘Minibots’ is a story that connects with the entire family.

There was a lot of potential for Marvel movies long before the days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with many films sadly not getting the green light despite promising intriguing concepts. Ever since Iron Man, the movies of the MCU have turned the Marvel Comics into a pop culture titan, redefining the metrics of success in modern cinema. But there have been a few interesting attempts at Marvel movie adaptations before the MCU that never quite got off the ground, despite the best efforts of their attached names.
It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time when Marvel Studios struggled to maintain relevancy, having already sold of their heaviest-hitting IPs to Sony with the Spider-Man trilogy and Fox with the Fox X-Men movies. Left with less popular characters, it was often difficult for filmmakers to secure funding, talent, or concrete ideas before the release of Iron Man.

If Wolverine’s journey into the past from a time-tested, dystopian, and apocalyptic future in X-Men: Days of Future Past seemed like déjà vu to some fans, it could be logically explained to those who were invested in the mutant superhero team in the ’90s.

In simple terms, there once existed a show, namely Wolverine and the X-Men, that highlighted the best version of our mutant allies and in a short time, was tragically subjected to cancelation after only 26 episodes. In retrospect, perhaps it was the short-lived legacy of the series that made it so precious in the people’s minds.

Wolverine and the X-Men, a short-lived series, honored X-Men legacy with compelling narratives and character development. Episodes like "Future X" and "Battle Lines" showcased high-stakes conflicts and emotional depth, captivating fans. The series' finale, "Foresight - Part 3," delivered a thrilling crescendo, balancing action and character development flawlessly.
Wolverine and the X-Men brought Marvel's famed mutant heroes to life in a series of thrilling episodes. Wolverine and the X-Men unfortunately only lasted for one season in 2009, producing a total of 26 episodes. Many of these were impeccably made, filled with intriguing narratives and deft character development, producing a litany of celebrated episode that released around the same time as the Fox X-Men movie timeline.
In many ways, Wolverine and the X-Men was the spiritual successor to the celebrated 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series, maintaining the tone and themes of the original series in a new narrative. Much of Wolverine and the X-Men concerned an overarching story,...

The latest episode of "X-Men '97," called "Motendo/Lifedeath, Part 1," features the return of Mojo, a longtime X-Men villain who made his debut in "Longshot" #3, published in November of 1985. Mojo was a horrible, mutilated cybernetic monster with robotic spidery legs and a series of mechanical tubes sprouting from his body. He ruled a dimension called the Mojoverse, and oversaw one of the realm's most popular TV shows, "Mojovision," a gladiatorial show wherein superpowered beings from across multiple dimensions would be forced to fight to the death. Mojo lived for ratings and only cared about watching his numbers increase. He was modeled after the shallow TV executives and schmoozing moneymen who oversee most creative efforts in Hollywood.

Wolverine and the X-Men deserves a revival for its captivating narrative and loyal fan base, building on the success of its predecessor. The Spectacular Spider-Man's mature themes and unique take on the iconic hero make it a valuable addition to the superhero landscape. Invader Zim's dark comedy and critical acclaim set the stage for a revival that could bring new storylines and humor to modern audiences.
Although cancellations of animated TV shows are common in the television industry, there are numerous series that could significantly benefit from being revived. From cult classics like Invader Zim and Freakazoid! to critically acclaimed classic ‘90s Saturday morning cartoons such as Hey Arnold, many animated shows have been cut short due to various reasons, including financial constraints, business decisions, or shifts in network priorities. These premature endings often leave storylines unresolved and characters' arcs incomplete, leaving viewers yearning for more.

Wolverine's Australian accent led to criticism in the 1989 X-Men pilot, despite comic-accurate costumes and impressive animation. X-Men: The Animated Series improved upon the 1989 pilot with emotional storytelling, serious themes, and a memorable theme song. Despite the failure of X-Men: Pryde of the X-Men, it inspired successful X-Men video games in the 1980s and 1990s, leaving behind a legacy.
Hugh Jackman is iconic as Wolverine, but some may be surprised to hear that a long-forgotten X-Men project had a different Australian play the role years earlier. Apart from the Fox X-Men movies, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s mutant ensemble has been reinterpreted in animation time and again with a coming-of-age makeover (X-Men: Evolution), a post-apocalyptic saga (Wolverine and the X-Men), and even a limited anime run. But the progenitor of this legacy was an ill-fated 1989 TV episode which, despite impressive animation, didn’t stick the landing.

X-Men '97 is highest-rated X-Men project in 24 years, setting the stage for a successful MCU debut. Fox's X-Men movies ended on a low note, but Marvel's reboot has critics thrilled with mature themes. The new X-Men show boasts retro-style animation and offers a promising glimpse into the MCU future.
X-Men '97, the first X-Men project since Marvel reacquired the rights for the franchise, has just broken records by becoming the highest-rated in 24 years. For the first time in over 10 years, a new animated “X-Men” show has arrived.
The first trailer for Disney+’s “X-Men ’97” is here, and it continues the story from the classic ’90s cartoon, “X-Men: The Animated Series.” It begins streaming on Disney+ on March 20.
The beloved “X-Men: The Animated Series” ran from 1992-1997 for five seasons. “X-Men ’97” functions as essentially a sixth season for the show, picking up after the 1997 series finale, “Graduation Day,” in which Prof. Charles Xavier dies. The new trailer shows X-Men members Cyclops, Wolverine, Morph, Rogue, Beast, Gambit, Jubilee, Bishop and more pick up the pieces after Prof. X perishes.
“We have to say vigilant, the professor entrusted us with his dream,” Cyclops says to his team, as footage shows anti-mutant protests in the streets and a casket containing Prof. X lowered into the ground. The team battles giant Sentinel robots, and the final...

After eight live-action Spider-Man movies, the most recent of which made unbelievable profits, the webhead is well and truly established as an icon of the superhero genre. We all know how things started, with Sam Raimi's 2002 "Spider-Man" giving us our first proper live-action Spidey film. But things could have looked very different if James Cameron's Spider-Man movie ever got made.
There's been a lot written about the director's ill-fated "Spider-Man," which would have been a much more adult, R-rated experience than Raimi's effort. The script was peppered with profanity and featured a love scene between Peter Parker and Mary Jane, who were supposed to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Nikki Cox respectively. Cameron was working on the project after the now-shuttered Carolco, which produced multiple blockbusters including Cameron's own "Terminator 2: Judgement Day," acquired the rights to Spider-Man in 1990. At last here’s your Marvel Comics mutant destroyer of worlds, courtesy of the first trailer for the latest “X-Men” film, “Dark Phoenix.” Watch it above.

For those who don’t know, the film is based on the highly celebrated and influential “X-Men” storyline of the same name by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, as detailed in “Uncanny X-Men” #101-108 (1976-1977) and “Uncanny X-Men” #129-138 (1980). In that story, Jean Grey accidentally merges with the Phoenix Force, a cosmic entity that embodies the universal energy of creation and destruction. Kids these days have got it made when it comes to superheroes. Not only can you not move for high quality, big screen adventures, but there’s a constant stream of fun cartoon adaptations on TV, too. Back in the 90s, though, we couldn’t afford to be so choosy. Superhero cinema was extremely hit and miss, leaving us with the consolation prizes of Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men: The Animated Series.
The latter ran for an impressive 76 episodes (and had an amazing theme tune, too), but sadly left us on a cliffhanger in September 1997 with an injured Charles Xavier leaving Earth for a life with Shi’ar Empress Lilandra. Now, in an interview with Syfy Wire, showrunner Eric Lewald was asked what his plans would have been if the series had continued for a sixth season, and here’s what he said:

Now, in an interview with Syfy Wire, showrunner Eric Lewald was asked what his plans would have been if the series had continued for a sixth season, and here’s what he said:

Generation X #2
Written by Christina Strain | Art by Amilcar Pinna | Published by Marvel Comics
When looking at recent relaunch of all the X-Men titles there is no question what the weakest link is so far and that is Generation X. So far it is a series that is severely lacking its own identity. Yes there are similar characters that once appeared in past Generation X stories but so far the characterizations have been poor and uninteresting. There are some ideas here that could work. Having to approach the teaching of teenage mutants differently based on their gifted powers could yield a good story if it ever gets to that point.
With some better editing this could have been a much shaprer book. Looking at these two issues there is no reason the story so far should be taking as long as it has been. That may sound hyperbolic for a...

Tonight’s second part of the Superheroes Decoded documentary miniseries Superheroes Decoded on History looks at characters including the Hulk; Black Panther; Iron Man; Luke Cage; Wolverine and the X-Men. The episode focuses on those superheroes who challenged authority and took the side of outsiders. These are characters with a rebellious side, and who are not afraid of breaking the rules for their own means. Superheroes Decoded: American Rebels will look at where they came from, and how they have been depicted on the big screen in the modern day. It also looks at how they relate to the real world,...read more...

It’s a good time to be an X-Men fan. In the wake of last week’s X-Men: Prime, Marc Guggenheim takes point as he launches X-Men Gold. This is the new flagship book of the X-Men franchise, and it kicks off in fine style.
Kitty Pryde delivers a speech. The X-Men play baseball. Logan (well, okay, Old Man Logan) gets sentimental, then tries to hide it. Guggenheim fully understands that X-Men fans are a nostalgic bunch, and he’s more than happy to give us the nostalgia buzz we’ve been long for. What pleases me, though, is that Guggenheim doesn’t simply channel Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run (as I’d feared after reading X-Men: Prime). Instead, he shows familiarity with the whole X-Men franchise, with subtle nods to so many different eras.

Simon Kinberg, a longtime writer/producer on the X-Men movies, may end up making his directorial debut with X-Men: Supernova, but in the meantime, he's provided ComicBook.com with a new update about the Gambit movie. The film has been in development for years now, and it's had multiple directors flirting with the project before the producers finally secured Edge of Tomorrow helmer Doug Liman (who, frankly, may or may not still be involved). Here's the latest, according to Kinberg:
"It's in active development. It's a movie that we hope will be ready to go by the end of this year and shoot next year. We have two or three X-Men related movies this year so it can wait for a moment. The process has been that Channing [Tatum] is as determined about getting the character right as Ryan Reynolds was about Deadpool and Hugh [Jackman] was about this Logan movie. We...

It’s surely not an understatement to say that character licensing is the bane of most comic book movie fans lives. While the source material provides us with ample examples of brilliant character combinations, their cinematic counterparts are limited in scope by movie studios and the characters they can use.
Deadpool is a prime example of this frustrating situation – being a self-aware character that has appeared in countless other comic book titles, but whose big screen adventures are tied to Twentieth Century Fox, thereby precluding any potential interaction with superheroes and villains outside of the X-Men universe. While promoting Logan, Hugh Jackman has recently addressed this issue in relation to Wolverine.
The actor has appeared on the big screen as Logan/Wolverine nine times in 17 years. From 2000’s X-Men, to 2017’s Logan, he’s become synonymous with...

Hugh Jackman has made it very clear that Logan will be the last time he plays Wolverine. It's a bittersweet moment because he's ending his time as Wolverine in, from what I hear, is one of the best comic book films ever made. Well, it turns out that Jackman would have stuck around in the role even longer had Fox and Marvel worked out a deal to allow the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
That's obviously something we would've all love to see! Unfortunately, we'll never see Jackman's Wolverine battle Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. When talking to ScreenRant, the actor was asked what he would do if he were offered the chance to be in an Avengers movie and this was his response:
"If that was on the table when I made my decision, it certainly would have made me pause. That’s for sure. Because I always love...

The opening scene in Logan tells you exactly what kind of movie you're about to watch. It pulls no punches, only claws, and by the end of it curse words are thrown, limbs are torn off, our hero is a bloody and disheveled mess, and we've just witnessed a moment in a Wolverine movie unlike any moment in any Wolverine movie thus far. Meet Logan, Hugh Jackman's final farewell to a character he's played for 17 years across nine different movies (including cameos), a feat that culminates in a wildly violent R-rated spectacle that delivers fans the Wolverine movie they've always dreamed of watching. It's gutsy and quite possibly the riskiest film we've ever seen from a major studio when it comes to a brand as big and powerful as Wolverine and the X-Men...

Yesterday, we reported that Marvel and Archie joined forces in a landmark deal, effectively bringing some of the most iconic superheroes around to big box retailers with Marvel Comics Digest. Set to kickoff in June by having its first issue focus on Spider-Man, subsequent installments to follow this year will chronicle the adventures of Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Wolverine and the X-Men.
Now that we’ve established Spider-Man is set to grace the cover of this new venture’s maiden voyage, we can confirm that the Avengers will adorn the cover of the second issue, specifically Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Wasp, Falcon and the Vision, each in the most heroic of poses. And should you be one of the True Believers who hasn’t taken kindly to Cap’s recent Hydra turn, this offering will probably be more to your liking.

For the most part, Marvel Animation has given us some great animated X-Men series in the past. Two of my favorites are the classic '90s series and X-Men: Evolution, which is where the character X-23 originated. Wolverine and the X-Men was an ok series as well. Now it seems like we have a new X-Men animated series coming later this year.
According to Bleeding Cool, the development of the new series started when Fox and Marvel started working together on the live-action X-Men series in development including Legion and the Matt Nix-created series that was recently announced. The site goes as far to say that we will get an official announcement later this year.
If there is any truth to this news, the announcement will most likely happen at WonderCon or Comic-Con. There are absolutely no details on what this series will entail, but it's exciting to learn...

Last week, Logan took the world by storm. The James Mangold film, which will serve as the swan song for Hugh Jackman's run as the most famous X-Men hero, Wolverine, debuted a teaser trailer that was striking, powerful, and original. In that trailer, we got to get a pretty decent look at one of the key characters in Logan's plot- a little girl that every comic book devotee assumed was a young X-23.
Yesterday, thanks to an official image posted on Logan's Instagram, the world received confirmation that the girl is named Laura, as in Laura Kinney, as in...X-23.

Open Road Films and Mattel have released the first domestic trailer for their upcoming live-action adaptation of Max Steel. The movie is based on Mattle's action figure line and animated series from the late '90s/early 2000s. This latest trailer is a lot better than the last international trailer that was released about a week ago. That thing was a mess, but this one is cut together so much better. You actually get a sense of what is going on and what the film is about. That being said, I'm still not sold on Max Steel. That first trailer left a bad taste in my mouth. I need to see more.
I have hope that it will be good, though, mostly because the script was written by Christopher Yost. He is the screenwriter of films such as Hulk Vs., Thor: The Dark World, and Thor: Ragnarok. I've also enjoyed his work on X-Men: Evolution,...

Earlier this month, we reported that Narcos star Boyd Holbrook has signed on to play the main villain in 20th Century Fox's highly-anticipated Wolverine 3, alongside Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart. A report from February revealed that filming will begin sometime this month in New Orleans, but it isn't known exactly when cameras will start rolling on this superhero adventure, which will mark Hugh Jackman's final performance as Wolverine. Today we have a new casting report that hints another mutant from the comics may be popping up in Wolverine 3, X-23.

Despite naysayers deeming Deadpool to be a risk, a record-breaking weekend – to the tune of $130 million – has vindicated Tim Miller and Ryan Reynold’s commitment to the character’s origins, and those who have seen Deadpool can attest that it’s as though the original comic book leaped onto the silver screen with minimal interference.

Marvel Comics has announced a new Doctor Strange comic.
Writer Jason Aaron (Thor) and artist Chris Bachalo (Uncanny X-Men) will be collaborating on the long-awaited solo series for the Sorcerer Supreme, reports EW.
The comic will land after the Secret Wars event as part of the All-New All-Different Marvel initiative, paving the way for the Benedict Cumberbatch-starring Doctor Strange film in autumn 2016.
Aaron and Bachalo are promising a 'reinvention' of the classic character.
"We wanted a Doctor Strange who was always having to work for what he gets, and to show that when he shows up and uses his powers, it's not like Captain America throwing his shield or Thor throwing his hammer," said Aaron.
"Strange has to worry about repercussions that those other heroes don't have to worry about, because he's a Sorcerer Supreme. We're talking about the forces of magic. So whatever he does has repercussions."

James looks back at 7 previous X-Men TV shows to see what Fox's in-development series could do well to emulate and avoid...
If recent reports are to be believed, Fox is planning to bring the X-Men franchise to the TV in some form or another, doubtlessly hoping to compete with Marvel and DC's ever-growing stable of shows.
And why not? The X-Men are no strangers to television, with a surprising number of TV appearances under their belts. So what are they like, and what can Fox learn from them as it attempts to bring a new X-Men TV series to life?
X-Men: Pryde Of The X-Men (1989)
This 30-minute animated short was produced as a pilot for an animated X-Men show and mostly used the 1970s Claremont/Byrne era team as its basis, though with one obvious exception. Had Marvel gone ahead, we'd have seen a team consisting of Professor X,...

On Marvel's upcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy animated series, the man who'll say "I am Groot" so often he may actually begin to believe he's a giant sentient tree-alien is Kevin Michael Richardson, who is definitely no stranger to voicing animated incarnations of well known comic book characters. Richardson has played the likes of Bishop in Wolverine and the X-Men, Nick Fury in Super Hero Squad, and the Joker in 2004's The Batman. Interestingly enough, he also voiced Groot once before on Hulk And The Agents Of S.M.A.S.H. Apparently we'll find out who'll be playing Star Lord, Drax, Gamora and Rocket as the week goes on. Marvel will produce the series, with Alan Fine, Dan Buckley, Joe Quesada and Jeph Loeb on board as as executive producers. Marvel's animated series have been hit and miss (okay, more miss!) in the past so hopefully this lives up to its potential. You...

A recent interview from Sundance 2015.
CEO of Kaleidoscope Film Distribution Spencer Pollard started his career as a tax advisor in media and film. He worked for the world’s biggest independent record producer with a team that managed and recorded acts like Beyoncé. He then entered television and film distribution, and went on to start an international division for a Us sales and distribution company where he setup finance for the TV series “Wolverine and the X-Men”. He went on to acquire the Marvel library for distribution in the UK and Western Europe.
Pollard shares the start, the success and slate of Kaleidoscope, and also gives some good business advice for filmmakers.
Please talk about how Kaleidoscope started.
I started Kaleidoscope with four titles. After nearly seven years, we are now the 15th biggest distributor in the UK, handling fifteen theatrical movies a year and 40-50 home entertainment titles. We sell, market, and distribute for third party labels, and release about 100 films a year. We handle rights for home entertainment, TV, digital, and have years of experience in sales and distribution.
We started Kaleidoscope’s International Sales and Distribution arm in Toronto back in 2010. We did this because we wanted to be involved in projects during their earlier stages, and wanted to be in control of sales and distribution rights on a major level.
As the market has diversified and changed, both in the UK and internationally, our business now focuses on two things — mainstream commercial genre films with great casts and larger budgets, and festival films that can play at festivals like Sundance, Toronto, or Berlin. We were very active in Sundance last year, where we picked up four films.
Kaleidoscope covers all genres?
We cover most genres, but we don’t do focus on foreign language art-house films. There are companies that are far better and dedicated with these specialty films. If we focused on art-house, it would take away from what we do well.
In terms of our upcoming slate, “Glassland” had its premiere at Sundance, and we are screening it in Berlin as well.
We have a genre film called “Digging Up The Marrow” by Adam Green, who has a great fan base because of his film “Frozen” and the “Hatchet” trilogy.
We are also selling “I Am Big Bird”, a documentary that has made it into many of the Us film festivals. It’s an intimate portrayal of the last living Sesame Street puppeteer. He has played Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since day one, and is now 81. It’s a lot of fun, and Sesame Street resonates with many people.
We have a rap film in production called "Hustler's Convention" which we hope to premiere in Tribeca. It will also screen at Cannes. It’s about the first ever rap album that sold a million copies through airplay alone, with talking heads from people like Chuck D, Melle Mel and Krs One.
We have a sports documentary that we hope to premiere in Toronto later this year. It’s the story of the thirteen founding women of the Lpga Tour. It goes into the sexual discrimination and country club mentality that these women had to break through to become female professional golfers. Last year, Stacey Lewis from the Lpga donated 1,000 dollars for every birdie she got, which has resulted in her donating over 120 thousand dollars to this production.
We have two animated films that will launch in Cannes. Both are British productions with A List casts and, by the time Cannes comes around, there will be fully finished scripts, animation scenes to show, and confirmation of A list voice talent.
Why are you passionate about your work?
I think film distribution can be a lot of fun, but ultimately it’s a business. It’s still predominantly my company and my money, so we take a very sensible but aggressive risk approach.
We try to give creative producers, directors and talent as much free range as possible. We love to work with producers and talent who’ve made things before, but we’ve also financed and distributed more independent British films than any other UK distributor over the last five years. We’re very keen on productions with an international market value. Many British films just get made for a British audience — we don’t sell those films. We carry films with a strong international base. It’s a great position to work from.
We want to keep our focus on a focused slate of film sales. We don’t have 300 films per year, and so our smaller slate allows us to give the best return to the filmmakers we work with. We like to work on high quality projects with filmmakers who are passionate and want to make films with us into the future. Long-term partnerships help us grow as a business.
What is it that you wish a lot of filmmakers could understand before they even come to you?
If you’re a first time producer or director, and you feel you’ve got something special, my advice is to find an experienced person to attach to the project. That’s the first hurdle. You need someone who understands film financing, sales and distribution to get a film made.
If you’ve just got a script and nothing else - no money, no cast, or you’re a first time director - you’re going to be at the back of the line. It’s just impossible to consider when we’ve got 1,000 scripts to read. We get excited when there’s a great script with a cast attached.
Filmmakers need to find sales and distribution people that like the project and feel that there is a place for their films in the marketplace. For every 5,000 films that get made, only 300 of them find distribution. It's a scary statistic!
I truly believe that creative people should be given the freedom to make what they want, but they need feedback and guidance from people in sales and distribution and a real understanding of the business and numbers.
Established production teams will send us films and say, “If we make 10 million dollars in the box office numbers, it will go back to the production and be profitable.” They completely forget about the publicity and advertising (P&A) that the distributor puts into the film and the shares the distributor takes by risking this investment. Business wise, it’s never as attractive as they think, so we hope we can help the financing, production and sales, and distribution life cycle of a film and genuinely return to the investors and producers enough money for the film to go ahead...
