Only because Sam Peckinpah wrote it

Yes folks, this episode is worth watching only, I insist - only - because it was written by the future director of THE WILD BUNCH, nothing more. The director Arnold Laven is also a good reason to try it, but for the rest, I guess you can live without it. I hardly watched it till the end, because it brings nothing new, nothing at all. I don't care if this stuff is the pilot of a Tv western show that I have never seen nor I will never see anyway. Chuck Connors is OK, as usual, and I repeat, nothing is worth spending, wasting twenty six minutes of your life; especially if you have never heard of Sam Peckinpah.

Sam Peckinpah originally proposed this storyline as an episode of the TV series Gunsmoke (1955) but the producers of that series said it wouldn't fit that show's format.
