    From innkeeper to patriot

In this Virginian story only The Virginian and Trampas are exactly who they say they are, a pair of weary travelers looking for an establishment to spend the night.

They spend it at Ricardo Montalban's establishment out on the Dakota plains. He may be an innkeeper now, but at one time he led a rebellion of mixed blood French and Indian settlers in western Canada.

Some trappers have come to take him back to Canada to start another rebellion, But at least one has something different in mind. H.M. Wynant has some money to finance a rebellion representing American fur interests, but they've got an agenda of their own.

And finally Montalban's wife Lois Nettleton had a past life as a con artist and she took Trampas good many years back

This whole episode is devoted to getting the truth sorted out. In the end of course it does and we get a good drama out of it.

The Metis make a second appearence

The Virginian and Trampas are on the Canadian border for a cattle deal with Carnahan and while waiting for him spend the night at a tavern owned by Louis Boissevain. Jacques ,Jules ,Michel and Helevey soon arrive. They are Canadian Matis ,of mixed Indian and French blood and have come for Louis to lead them in an uprising against the Canadian government which has betrayed them. Lopuis has made a life for himself with Suzanne Mayo ,who has a shady past which is known to Trampas ,and is reluctant to leave. Sturdevant ,a representative of the U. S. fur trade ,which wants the Canadian forrests opened up,arrives with money for the uprising .Jacques fears the Shiloh hands are bounty hunters after the money on Louis' head and has Trampas locked up. The Virginian escapes.... Insightful .intelligent script is based on the real -life Louis Riel who escaped to the U. S. after an uprising against the Canadian government in which a Scotsman was killed ,an incident mentioned in the script .The Metis also featured in episode 4x22 Harvest of Strangers in which a group of the Canadians arrive in Medicine Bow on a secret mission.

During the last few minutes, a birch bark canoe is put back in the water, where the mountains of Canada are seen ahead - and high hills are seen to the right. On that right side near the top, is a very high white power line. At first glance, it seems to be a birch tree, but as it is in view several times for many seconds; horizontal, parallel white beams are easily seen near the top. The hydro tower rises far higher than any tree or structure that would have been present in that wilderness during that era.

Louis Boissevain: Whatever you have done in your life, you have made Louis Boissevain the happiest man that ever walked the earth. As long as there is a God in the sky, he will smile upon you for this. Goodbye, my dearest love, may our dreams meet in the days and nights ahead.
