    Silver lady...

Doyle suspects the woman his new girlfriend is sharing a flat with may be involved in a Russian plot to steal silver bullion, and has to do some careful investigations.

Despite some good interplay between Doyle, his girlfriend (played by the delightful Rachel Davies) and her friend Jill, this episode somehow doesn't quite hit the mark. The set-up for the bullion heist is good - it's just that the execution of the actual hijack itself is over in a matter of seconds - and almost seems to pass without the viewer really noticing! With a bit more of a pacy direction, this could have been made much more exciting and tense, and could have formed the centerpiece of the episode.

Instead it's left really till the final act, when Jill herself becomes the target - and the pace starts to pick up to an action-packed conclusion. Not a bad story, and there's lots to enjoy along the way, but you're left with the feeling it could have been so much better.

    Hijack

An Eastern Europe embassy official has an audacious plan to hijack silver bullion being sent to Britain from the Iron Curtain countries. They would then make a killing by manipulating the spot price of silver in the markets.

A British businessman Walters puts up the finance to arrange the hijack. However Doyle's girlfriend is a flatmate of someone who knows the people involved.

CI5 manage to figure out what is happening but they also need to protect Doyle's girlfriend and her flatmate.

For a Martin Campbell directed episode, this was rather routine. There is a good scene as Doyle pursues a hitman in the Ford Capri.

I also liked the plan of the silver bullion market being manipulated. As Walters acknowledges, it is a good plan by the communists to make money from the markets.

    • Trivia
At Wembley, when Alan Stansfield is speaking to George Cowley about the price of silver, he mentions that after the summer of 1979 that " . . . someone tried to corner the market . . . ". This is a reference to the speculations of Nelson Bunker Hunt and his brothers to hoard as much of this as possible, then make a killing when the price rose. This failed miserably, especially with the massive price drop in this precious metal on Silver Thursday, the 27th of March, 1980. In the end, the brothers lost a fortune, unable to profiteer from their attempt to manipulate the silver price.
    • Goofs
In this episode we are expected to believe that the boot (trunk) at the front of a Skoda (which is RHD despite being of foreign plates) can be filled brim-full with ingots of silver. The suspension springs would be squashed flat once about ten ingots (enough to cover the floor of the luggage space only) were in there.
