Sometimes Charlie Can Be So Dense

This episode involves the predictability of serial sniper. Charlie gets in there because of the word "predictable." He pontificates, using statistics to explain human behavior and randomness. While I thought the episode was quite good, Charlie is so clueless at times. I enjoyed the input of the Lou Diamond Phillips character, a man of practicality.

    Well I'll Be Damned...

You know how scientists and nerds get mad at "The Big Bang Theory" for getting their culture and jobs wrong? I have no sympathy. As a former Army sniper I cringe at the mere mention of a show having a sniper- centered episode. It is extremely rare for shows to even come close to not screwing up royally.

Then comes NUMB3RS. A show I only watched on Netflix out of boredom. And lo and behold, they have a sniper episode that gets nearly everything right. 300 meter center-mass shot? Yup, not impressive says the FBI sniper guy. He explains it's amateur hour. He even deconstructs the crappy hide-site the would-be sniper selected. Bad mouths the cheap yet somehow often-championed on TV Blazer rifle, and explains mechanics of long-range shooting like hear rate and breathing patterns.

I was dumbfounded. A relatively dumb show about solving crime with math and yet it came the absolute closest I've seen in depicting snipers by deconstructing all the crap other shows spout about us. The sniper in question turns out to be a simply a wannabe, which isn't a spoiler considering FBI sniper-guy says it flat out within the first three or four minutes, which explains why he uses the crappy techniques one would think a sniper uses from a lifetime of video games and bad TV.

All in all, it's still NUMB3RS, so either you like the show's premise or you don't. But as far as an episode goes, this one was a winner. A nice critique of crappy sniper tropes from other shows and movies. Hopefully the show does the same with all it's subject matter in other episodes.

When Charlie, first draws the x and y axis. He puts the 'x' on the vertical axis, and the 'y' on the horizontal. However, on an actual graph the x-axis is the horizontal and the y-axis is the vertical.

[Alan arrives at the FBI office]

Don Eppes: Thanks for bringing lunch all the way down here. Come on, this way.

Alan Eppes: Well, you know, the drive was a pleasure. Traffic on the 10 has never been thinner since, uh, well, since it's been the 10.

Don Eppes: Yeah, it's like all L.A.'s in lockdown, huh? A little eerie.

[He ushers his father into an office where they can eat together]

      Don Eppes: Right in here.

Alan Eppes: Yeah. So, how uh... how are you and Charlie managing this case?

Don Eppes: Well, I mean, he's frustrated; I'm frustrated. I mean, we're having a rough time on this.

Alan Eppes: Is that why he's been running out of the house late at night?

Don Eppes: We got an agent on him all the time.

Alan Eppes: I mean, I know he's been helping you out and that he comes down to your office a lot, and I-I-I think that's great. But... but Donnie you got him going out on crime scenes... I mean, there's this guy shooting people out there.

Don Eppes: Dad, you really think I would put Charlie in danger?

Alan Eppes: No. You know what I really think?

      Don Eppes: What?

Alan Eppes: I think you have to understand that Charlie can never say no to you.

[Don sighs and puts down his sandwich]

Alan Eppes: I mean... I mean, all you have to do is ask him something, and he's there for you.

Don Eppes: Yeah, and I'm there for him.

Alan Eppes: [sighs] Look, he's not a cop. Now, come on, I mean, he's better off with chalk in his hand than a gun.

Don Eppes: You know, you gotta stop this; he is a grown man, and he's capable of...

Alan Eppes: [cuts him off] Who still seeks the approval of his older brother, whether his older brother likes it or not.

[Don's phone rings, he takes the call, then tells Alan there's been another shooting before heading out]

Don Eppes: I promise I won't call Charlie until we roll the tanks out, and I want you to stay here until I call you, okay? All right. Thanks for the sandwich.
