One Movie Helped Robert Pattinson Land ‘The Boy and the Heron’ and Batman That’s Too Hard to Believe
Image
Robert Pattinson’s career path is among the most fascinating in modern Hollywood. From his initial stint as brooding heartthrob Edward Cullen in Twilight to his critically acclaimed turns in independent films, Pattinson has repeatedly chosen roles that challenge traditional expectations. Though most fans acknowledge The Batman as his ultimate departure from mainstream franchise cinema, one lesser-known film was instrumental in landing him a role in both The Boy and the Heron and The Batman.

Recently, Gkids, Studio Ghibli’s U.S. distributor’s president Dave Jesteadt revealed that Pattinson’s role in an intense crime thriller called Good Time (2017) was a major factor in Studio Ghibli’s decision to cast him as the enigmatic Heron in Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. This new revelation comes after, earlier, director Matt Reeves cited Pattinson’s gripping...

‘Last Samurai Standing’ Japanese Battle-Royale Drama on Netflix: Sets November 2025 Release & What We Know So Far
Image
Junichi Okada, who enters this dangerous game with one goal: to save his ailing wife and child.”

Who is in the cast for Last Samurai Standing?

For a long time, Junichi Okada was the only confirmed cast member. Some Netflix subscribers would be familiar with Junichi Okada if they streamed the Japanese crime-thriller Hard Days. Others may recognize him for his voice work on animated titles Tales from Earthsea and From Up on Poppy Hill. Outside of Netflix, the actor has starred in several historical dramas.

Junichi Okada shared his excitement with Netflix about the project;

“When Netflix executive producer Mr. Takahashi reached out to me, I was still acting in historical dramas. Back then, I was already thinking of ways to make this genre a hit, not just in Japan, but all over the world. I saw their potential for action, drama, social commentary, and entertainment, but I knew they could be taken further.

This 2010 Studio Ghibli Movie With a 37% on Rotten Tomatoes Never Deserved the Hate
Image
Tales from Earthsea is a 2006 Studio Ghibli anime film based on a collection of short stories by Ursula K. Le Guin and published in 2001. Although Studio Ghibli is commonly known for creating quality films loved across the world, Tales from Earthsea is commonly thought of as a black sheep among Ghibli's other fantastic movies. Even Rotten Tomatoes has only scored the movie at 37%.

However, while this film is far from being as amazing as some of Studio Ghibli's other masterpieces, it's far from deserving of all the hate it received. It may not have lived up to the hype of other Studio Ghibli movies, but Tales From Earthsea is still a fantastic film deserving of a second chance.

All 24 Studio Ghibli Movies Ranked
Image
Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 by the already seasoned directors Hayao Miyazaki, who'd earned his bones at Toei, and Isao Takahata, who'd worked alongside him. With them was producer Toshio Suzuki, who, as Animage magazine editor, helped Miyazaki introduce "Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind" to Japanese manga fans. While the manga wouldn't be completed until 1994, Suzuki encouraged and assisted Miyazaki in completing the film, which led to the founding of Ghibli.

Of the 24 films Studio Ghibli has produced to date — including "Nausicaa," which may have been a Topcraft and Toei production but wouldn't exist without Ghibli's founders — few are a total failure. Even the controversial Goro Miyazaki films have gleams to them that might shine brighter if he didn't have his father's massive shadow over him. But nor can a list say that they're almost all number ones, because that's not fun to debate. These rankings are subjective but...

Hayao Miyazaki’s Heartfelt Apology to Son After Major Fallout Over the Worst Studio Ghibli Movie: “For a long time we didn’t talk”
Image
Hayao Miyazaki is an eccentric man with rigid opinions. Many people from the anime industry have openly discussed how hard it is to work with Miyazaki. The director is not scared of criticizing what he doesn’t like and is famous for taking a stand against the usage of CGI in his creations.

But while his opinions about the anime industry are valid, given his expertise in the field, many are unsatisfied with the way Miyazaki treats his son. During the production of Tales from Earthsea, Goro was stuck in a dilemma as its director, but Miyazaki never helped his son and even stopped talking to Goro after the movie was released.

6 sci-fi and fantasy authors who hated the screen adaptations of their books
Image
Earlier this week, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin set off a drama bomb when he bluntly criticized HBO's Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon in a blog post. It's clear that he has problems with how the show has adapted his book Fire & Blood. Martin drilled down on how the show's decision to cut a certain character from the book could have negative butterfly effects down the line, and teased that there are "larger and more toxic butterflies to come, if House Of The Dragon goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for seasons 3 and 4."

This was surprising to hear because Martin, who's as big a celebrity author as exists right now, has always been very supportive of the TV shows based on his work. He may have expressed a quibble here and there about Game of Thrones when it was running,...

Studio Ghibli Director Creates New Howl-Like Artwork for 24-Hour TV Special
Image
Every year, Nippon TV holds a 24-hour telethon designed to raise money for various environmental and disaster relief charities in Japan. This year, Studio Ghibli assisted its parent company by creating a canine mascot for Nippon TV's new charity TV shirt line.

Per Nippon TV's official website, Studio Ghibli Managing Director Goro Miyazaki recently created new artwork featuring a disgruntled-looking dog that resembles Heen, the lovable elderly dog from Ghibli's 2004 film Howl's Moving Castle. As shown below, the accompanying text reads, "Will Love Save the Earth?" -- an active nod to the Telethon's recurring "Love Saves the Earth" theme. Goro's Heen lookalike will be Nippon TV's charity mascot this year, appearing on white, yellow and gray T-shirts that are scheduled to hit Aeon store shelves starting July 4. At the time of writing, the retail price (including tax) is approximately 2,000 yen (or US$12.52). A portion of proceeds from all shirt sales will be donated to charity.

What Caused the Rift Between Hayao Miyazaki and His Son?
Image
Hayao Miyazaki was difficult to work with and had a strained relationship with his son, Goro Miyazaki. Goro Miyazaki was pressured into directing the film 'Tales From Earthsea' and received criticism when it didn't meet expectations. Despite their difficulties, Hayao and Goro Miyazaki continued to work together, with Hayao offering advice and Goro creating his own animated series.

Hayao Miyazaki is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and one of the most beloved anime directors of all time. That being said, a number of people he's worked with over the years have come forward to confess that he was difficult to deal with and work with, including Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki. Miyazaki is a fantastic artist, but he is also a very strong critic. Modern animators using CGI technology have met with Miyazaki's scorn, while the Academy at the 2003 Oscars was left cold when Miyazaki refused to attend the ceremony.

Best Ghibli Movies Not Directed By Miyazaki, Ranked
Image
Studio Ghibli's co-founder Hayao Miyazaki undoubtedly deserves the lion's share of credit for the studio's success. If an endless supply of quotes, stories, and the Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki documentary are to be believed, the legendary director is Ghibli's North Star for each creative endeavor. While there have been many attempts by the now elderly Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli at large to pass the baton off to other creators, it's Miyazaki who still looms large as its figurehead.

Despite the undeniable prowess of its co-founder, the studio still boasts a roster of equally captivating films helmed by other talented directors. Though Miyazaki may have won multiple Oscars on Studio Ghibli's behalf, his iconic status shouldn't eclipse other creator's entries. With no shortage of classic films to Studio Ghibli's credit directed by different folks, fans, and newcomers alike should delight in exploring the full menu of films by the beloved Japanese animation studio.

Every Studio Ghibli Movie Not Directed By Hayao Miyazaki, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Goro Miyazaki's Tales From Earthsea and Earwig And The Witch are considered the worst Studio Ghibli films due to their lack of depth, contrived storytelling, and unlikable characters. Ocean Waves and The Secret World of Arrietty suffer from weak plotlines and underdeveloped characters, despite their visually interesting animation. Whisper of the Heart and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya are standout films not directed by Hayao Miyazaki, showcasing emotional storytelling, stunning animation, and strong character development.

While Hayao Miyazaki might be the biggest name associated with Studio Ghibli, he’s not the only director they’ve ever had. Studio Ghibli's new movie The Boy and the Heron has revealed its English cast, and its inclusion of Dave Bautista, Mark Hamill, and Florence Pugh is certainly stunning. While The Boy and the Heron’s original marketing strategy was to rely solely on brand recognition, that's no longer the case. 10 Best Anime Based on American Franchises
Image
Many popular American cartoons have clearly and proudly been influenced by anime. Beloved cartoons like Teen Titans and Avatar: The Last Airbender have drawn influences from the anime industry when capturing their art styles, character archetypes, and storytelling.

Thanks to the global reach of pop culture in the 21st century, the opposite is also true, with Japanese studios being influenced by American franchises and creating anime adaptations of well-known American works. Over the years comic books and video games alike have inspired noteworthy anime that's worth watching.

Star Wars: Visions

Classic Japanese samurai movies were one of the major influences on George Lucas in early drafts of the original Star Wars. With Visions, Japanese animators and filmmakers had the chance to celebrate the influence of Star Wars on their own works. A multi-studio anthology of standalone animated short films, Visions is stylish and slick.

Each studio used their distinct art...

He Already Has New Ideas - The Boy & The Heron Isn't Miyazaki's Last Movie Ghibli Producer Confirms
Image
While The Boy and the Heron was initially announced to be Hayao Miyazaki’s last movie, that’s just been announced to no longer be the case. In 2017, Studio Ghibli announced that Miyazaki was working on a new film titled The Boy and the Heron, also known as How Do You Live? in Japan, and that it would be his final film before retirement. While Miyazaki had announced plans to retire in the past, Miyazaki’s age was a noted factor in The Boy and the Heron’s long production cycle, and with the film being intended to give his grandchildren something to remember him by, it seemed like Miyazaki would finally retire.

That being said, it appears that didn’t stick, and The Boy and the Heron is no longer going to be Hayao Miyazaki’s final film. According to Studio Ghibli vice-president Junichi Nishioka, while Miyazaki will no longer be working on animation,...

Best Folklore References In Studio Ghibli Movies
Image
Most Studio Ghibli movies read like fairytales. Nearly all the movies have fantasy elements to them, from the magical realism of Only Yesterday to Chihiro's isekai journey to a total fantasy world in Spirited Away. Many of the beings in Hayao Miyazaki's stories are inspired by folkloric figures and concepts.

Some draw to specific folkloric stories, like certain kinds of yokai, and others draw more from the idea of kami in general. The Shinto cosmology, an animistic religion, informs many things in Japanese culture. Studio Ghibli sometimes adapts works like Howl's Moving Castle and Tales from Earthsea, which are Western stories that incorporate British, Danish, and Greek folktales. The rest of the Miyazaki movies are largely informed by the concept of animism.

Burial (Ben Parker)

From Tarantino to Mann to Marvel, mining Word War II for fictional storytelling purposes is nothing new in cinema. The latest to take the leap is Ben Parker’s Burial, a staid action thriller following Russian soldiers who are transporting the corpse of Hitler back to their homeland, per Stalin’s request. While Parker suggests some interesting ideas about conflicted nationalism at the end of a war, and he gets the table-setting right when it comes to mood, Burial...

The Full Studio Ghibli Catalogue Is Now Available To Rent On Digital
Image
Studio Ghibli is the most important animation production company in movie history, and I say this with absolutely no hyperbole. The home of living animation legend Hayao Miyazaki and the studio responsible for some of the most brilliant works of animated cinema ever put to screen, Studio Ghibli has consistently broken new ground and completely redefined what stories are possible to tell in animation since its inception in the 1980s. Founded by Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, Studio Ghibli films have become internationally beloved classics, and have even inspired an upcoming theme park set to open in Japan later this year.

Back in 2020, HBO Max snagged the streaming rights to Studio Ghibli's entire filmography, but Gkids recently announced that the entire Studio Ghibli catalog is now available for digital download-to-rent in the United States and Canada. The films will be available to rent in both English and Japanese languages and this...

Earwig and the Witch Review
Image
Any new Studio Ghibli production is bound to be met with incredibly high expectations due to their phenomenal output over the past three decades. But even if a new feature arrived peppered with blemishes in pivotal areas i.e. script, characters, arcs and direction, one would still expect to see their incomparable style, surrealism and quirky characters present, which make up such a huge part of why we fell in love with them in the first place.

Sadly, in the case of their latest, Earwig and the Witch, these qualities are scarce to the point of seeming non-existent. The film also falls short in the aforementioned areas making it below par by any standard, and Ghibli in name only, despite being directed by Goro Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki.

The script, based on a novel by Diana Wynne Jones (Howl’s Moving Castle), flows well for the...

How ‘Earwig and the Witch’ Dragged Studio Ghibli Into the World of CG Animation
Taylor Henderson, Kokoro Hirasawa, and Jazmín Abuín in Aya et la Sorcière (2020)
A version of this story about “Earwig and the Witch” first appeared in the Oscar Nominations Preview issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

The Japanese company Studio Ghibli is legendary for its hand-drawn animation, including the classics “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Princess Mononoke,” “Howl’s Moving Castle” and the Oscar-winning “Spirited Away.” All of those films were directed by the studio’s co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki — but it’s his son, Goro Miyazaki, who has now given Studio Ghibli its first-ever 3Dcg animated feature, “Earwig and the Witch.”

The idea for the film, Goro Miyazaki said, came when his father gave him the novel by English writer Diana Wynne Jones and suggested it might make a good movie. Goro, who initially worked as a landscape architect to avoid the long shadow of his father before joining the family business to direct “Tales From Earthsea” and “From Up on Poppy Hill,” took to the story of a young,...

‘Earwig And The Witch’ Director Gorô Miyazaki On The Challenging Process Of Crafting Studio Ghibli’s First 3D CG Feature
Image
After directing the television series Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter for Japanese network Nhk Bs Premium, Gorô Miyazaki returned to his roots at Studio Ghibli, looking to take on his first film in “full 3D CG.”

For the son of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki—who helped turn Ghibli into an internationally respected animation studio—that project would end up being an adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones’s novel, Earwig and the Witch.

“Hayao and [producer] Toshio Suzuki came to me with the suggestion that this novel was likely a good story for a film adaptation,” the younger Miyazaki says. “I loved the fact that the protagonist wasn’t your typical ‘good girl,’ in the sense that she’s always right, and does the correct thing. She’s very fun.”

Gorô Miyazaki’s follow-up to the acclaimed features Tales from Earthsea (2006) and From Up on Poppy Hill (2011) centers on Earwig, a 10-year-old orphan girl in 1990s England,...

Studio Ghibli’s First CG Feature, ‘Earwig and the Witch,’ Gets English-Language Oscar Qualification
Image
“Earwig and the Witch,” the first CG-animated feature from Studio Ghibli, directed by Goro Miyazaki — and son of legendary Hayao Miyazaki — will get an English-language release for Oscar qualification from Gkids. The feature is slated to air on Nhk in Japan December 30, 2020. Gkids will release the film theatrically in North America in early 2021.

The voice work is headlined by Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”), Kacey Musgraves (“Golden Hour”), and Dan Stevens (“Legion”). The six-time Grammy-winning Musgraves will also record an English version of the theme song, “Don’t Disturb Me.”

Based on the children’s novel “Earwig and the Witch” by Diana Wynne Jones, the fantasy concerns the young Earwig (Taylor Paige Henderson) growing up in a British orphanage in the countryside with no idea that her mother (Musgraves) possessed magical powers. Her life changes suddenly she’s forced to live with a selfish witch,...

Miyazaki’s ‘Spirited Away’ Surpasses $300 Million at the Japan Box Office After 19 Years
Image
Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winner “Spirited Away” has crossed the $300 million mark at Japan’s box office, over 19 years after the anime classic’s original theatrical release. Toho, Japan’s leading film distributor and exhibitor, announced December 15 it was boosting the total domestic box office of “Spirited Away” by $8.5 million, taking into account revival screenings of the film that took place in 2020 (via Variety). With so many new releases postponed amid the pandemic, Toho re-released “Spirited Away” to help lure moviegoers back to theaters. The total gross for “Spirited Away” in Japan now sits at $304 million, which is the all-time record for any film released in Japan.

The new gross for “Spirited Away” means the fall 2020 box office sensation “Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train” has a bit more to go to claim the all-time record. Released by Toho and Aniplex in October, the animated action movie “Demon Slayer” has...

Toho Announces Revised Box Office Total for Record Holder ‘Spirited Away’
Image
Japan’s leading film distributor and exhibitor Toho Tuesday announced that it is upping the official box office total of the 2001 Miyazaki Hayao animation “Spirited Away” by $8.5 million to $304 million, the all-time record for any film in the Japanese market. The new figure includes revival screenings of the film this year in the Toho chain after the pandemic led to the postponement of dozens of new releases.

This means that the current number two, the action animation “Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train” that Toho is co-distributing with Aniplex, will have a bit farther to go to pass Japan’s all-time chart leader. As of Monday, it had earned $291 million and was widely expected to overtake “Spirited Away” in total box office by next week.

Originally released in July, 2001, “Spirited Away” was re-released by Toho on June 26, 2020 on 372 screens, together with three other classics from Miyazaki and his Studio Ghibli animation house.

Full Japanese Trailer for Goro Miyazaki's 'Earwig and the Witch' Film
Taylor Henderson, Kokoro Hirasawa, and Jazmín Abuín in Aya et la Sorcière (2020)
Miyazaki is back!! Nhk in Japan has unveiled an official trailer for a brand new Studio Ghibli movie titled Earwig and the Witch. But don't get too excited about the return of Ghibli. The film is the latest feature directed by Goro Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki's son who also directed the films Tales from Earthsea and From Up on Poppy Hill. Because it's uh, his father's studio, he convinced Ghibli to "return from the dead" to make another new film - this one being their first entirely CGI creation. And it looks pretty rough, to be honest. Earwig and the Witch, also known as Âya and the Witch, was supposed to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year - instead it's debuting direct-to-tv on the Nhk channel in Japan on December 30th just before the end of the year. It follows an orphan girl, Earwig, who is adopted by...

Studio Ghibli Releases 400 Free Images from Its Movies, but Only to Use with ‘Common Sense’
Image
Studio Ghibli is helping to ease the pain of 2020 by making 400 high resolution images from eight of its movies available to download for free. The films include “When Marnie Was There,” “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya,” “The Wind Rises,” “From Up on Poppy Hill,” “The Secret World of Arrietty,” “Ponyo,” “Tales from Earthsea,” and Best Animated Feature Oscar winner “Spirited Away.” A handwritten note from Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki notes the one catch: “Please use them freely within the scope of common sense.”

The 400 free images mean each film mentioned above has 50 new high-resolution stills to explore. The note to use the images with “common sense” means fans have the green light from Suzuki to share the stills on social media and make artwork out of them, but don’t think about selling them for profit. Suzuki teased that more free images from additional Studio Ghibli movies will become available in the future.

Gkids Acquires Studio Ghibli’s Goro Miyazaki-Directed ‘Earwig And the Witch’
Image
Gkids has acquired the North American distribution rights to Studio Ghibli’s Earwig and the Witch, directed by Goro Miyazaki and produced by studio co-founder Toshio Suzuki, with planning on the feature from his father and Oscar winner Hayao Miyazaki.

Based on the children’s novel of the same name by Diana Wynne Jones (Howl’s Moving Castle), Earwig and the Witch marks Studio Ghibli’s first entirely 3Dcg animated feature. The film follows the titular Earwig, who grew up in an orphanage and never knew her mother had magical powers. Her life takes a new turn when a strange family takes her in, and she is forced to live with a selfish witch.

Earwig And The Witch, From Studio Ghibli, Will Head to North America
Image
Studio Ghibli is an animation studio that has consistently produced outstanding films over the years, thanks largely to director Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao. In recent years, Miyazaki Gorō has followed his own path in film at the studio, somewhat different from his father, directing Tales From Earthsea (2006), which was a bit unsteady, and then From Up on Poppy Hill, which I enjoyed immensely. Now the younger Miyazaki's next film, Earwig and The Witch, produced by studio co-founder Suzuki Toshio, "with planning on the feature from his father, Academy Award®-winner" Miyazaki Hayao, is on its way to North America, according to an official statement from distributor Gkids. Here's more from the statement: "Based on the children's novel Earwig and the Witch by Diana Wynne...
