I went to high school with Ed Amos. I worked at the same General Motors plant as Ed. I knew all three wives. This movie only scrapes the surface of the lives of the people involved. As was said before in another comment: no body in Anderson was interviewed, Ed did not run for Mayor, he had filed in the primary and then Saundra was found dead and he withdrew. Why did the movie leave out his college love interest died falling from a balcony, his parents house mysteriously burnt to the ground after being for sale after he inherited it. His sister's husband had a mysterious stroke while jogging and Ed studied Pharmacy in College. I wish someone would really investigate all the things surrounding Ed and then write a book. What a mystery!!!!!!!!!
Ed Amos is a good looking guy. He is a GM executive. He has money and is very popular. He is even the Republican candidate for mayor in a small Indiana town. Trouble is that Amos' 3 wives all died suddenly under very mysterious circumstances as well as his mother.
Isn't it obvious that something is terribly wrong?
Ed is such a charmer that he has literally been able to get away with murder for all these years. His latest mother-in-law complains that something is wrong. Later on, we find out that she has been meeting him secretly and knew him before he married her daughter. What's going on here?
By the way, did he drop out of the mayor's race when wife #2 died? (She was also a closet Democrat who privately joked that she'd vote for the opposition.)
A prosecutor arrives on the scene who decides to take the bull by the horns and go for murder 1. At one point, the prosecutor announces that her husband died of heart disease. Ironically, he was a cardiologist! I began to wonder about her.
Nevertheless, she uncovers the way that Ed did away with wife #3 and most likely the other ladies as well. Pretty intriguing.
This is a true story and Ed is serving a life sentence. He was never brought to trial in the other 3 deaths.

As a person closer to this story than I care to divulge, I can say that this movie is hardly a true story. Ed Amos did kill 4 people (at least) and is serving a life sentence. However, the movie itself makes a mockery of the real people involved and it makes me sick to my stomach that the producers of this movie would claim it to be based on a true story. Not because it is not "based" on a true story, but because by labeling it as such, every single person who watches this movie and does not have access to the real story will assume every moment of it to have actually taken place. The reality is that it is a nearly entirely fictional film that uses the names of actual people. Not a single interview was conducted before production . That said, I do not know what else I could have expected from the Lifetime network. Families of the deceased deserved better.
Done on the Canadian cheap, with Kelly McGillis probably getting most of the budget, Black Widower from 2006 is based on a true story.
The title says it all.
What it doesn't say is how anyone was attracted to this guy, described as "handsome" obviously before the role was cast with the ordinary David Lipper.
Of course a person doesn't need to be handsome, but this guy had nothing going for him. No charisma, and a personality tending toward sleaze.
If he was going to have no charisma and a personality tending toward sleaze, he should have looked like Chris Hemsworth.
Kelly McGillis, a long way from Witness, is not photographed to her advantage. I know this sounds petty but it just added to how cheap the movie looked. Also, as an aside, all the women who were shown in offices had slits in their skirts. Must be a new thing.

Who could believe anything bad about this brilliant businessman, an executive at General Motors, a golden boy admired by everybody and who had an amazing way with women, but when his third wife dies by just dropping off after a night of orgies there has been one dead wife too much, since all of them brought him lots of very much desired money by their demission. But how did he do it, if he did it? That's the object of the investigation here, and there are a lot of flashbacks into his past and his past wives, and two of those cases were never resolved or even reopened. But the third one was just one too many.
