Better Than the Two Films in Question

Digging Up the Dead: The Lost Film of George A. Romero (2005)

    *** 1/2 (out of 4)

This 15-minute interview with director George A. Romero has him looking back on two films, which are probably the least known of his career. We start off with THERE'S ALWAYS VANILLA, which Romero says started out as a short film and then eventually got expanded but he also admits that they were running very low on money and the end result is something of a non-complete product. Romero says he enjoyed working with the cast but freely jokes that he can't remember too much about the movie and that he has no plans to revisit it. In other interviews he has stated it was his worst movie but he never goes that far here. Also, in previous interviews, he has stated that SEASON OF THE WITCH (aka JACK'S WIFE) was "crap" but here he says he likes it but again the movie doesn't feel complete to him because they ran out of money. He gives us more ideas on what he was originally going for but sadly there's no any talk of the original version except that the studio wanted it cut down. It would have been nice knowing what all was cut. Overall this is another good production from Anchor Bay as it's clear they're getting everything from Romero that he can. He admits that he doesn't watch his movies unless he has to and that there aren't any plans to view these two, which have pretty much been forgotten by him.
