How did this version end up in the US?

This was my favorite show during childhood and I have been searching for it since. So you have no idea how happy I was finding out this show isn't some obscure cartoon but actually GLOBALLY LOVED!! And the merchandise! I've seen the more popular animation before but this one is absolutely more familiar. The only thing is I read all about the history on their website and this one had a significantly less chance of being in the US, not to mention a small town's video store. Not that im complaining lol this show genuinely taught me a lot when my parents couldn't. Especially self love and kindness.

    Childhood Memory

The series was so charming and magical to watch when I was a child. I remember being scared of the anime but I loved books so I watched this version, native to my country. It felt so whimsical and mysterious. Great job!

    Food for the imagination

The Moomins are a family of white hippo looking creatures comprising of Moomin-papa, Moomin-mama and their child simply called, Moomin. You follow the young Moomin and his friends through many adventures as they discover the world they live in. A world full of wonder, magic and also sometimes danger.

The overarching themes of the series are generosity, patience, love and compassion. We see this through the interactions of the rather diverse personalities and characters found on the show. Just to name a couple: Little My is a miniature girl like character with a huge personality (and attitude) and on the other side of the spectrum you will find a kangaroo looking creature named Sniff who is rather timid and paranoid. I found myself getting rather attached to the cute little characters along the way. Another theme that struck out at me later on in life is that this series is not only about kids being kids but also about parents allowing their kids to be kids as well as being there for them when things go wrong.

I had to look long and hard before I could find the series on DVD (that would also work in our DVD players in Canada). And I plan to make my future children watch this show when they are young too and hope that they will be able to simply enjoy the originality and imagination that went into the little world and also grab a few little life lessons along the way.

    Now that's scary!

    (r#39)

I stumbled upon this show on Youtube searching for my lost childhood in the form of old anime Moomin episodes. If I'm to understand this right, this is the show that the Brits grew up with. No wonder people like Bullet Tooth Tony exist.

Richard Murdoch hauntingly tells the tale of how Moomin transformed into a hideous beast when he hid inside the Wizard's hat. Accompanying the narration are creepy art-house-inspired Moomin dolls jumping around to some sort of flute-like music. A very creepy experience and I hope I don't get any nightmares because of this.

    An excellent series

Forget what Torgo says, if you were younger when this was on, then you would have found this series charming, and a bit scary at times, but then kids like to be scared, just a bit, but not too much and this has just the right amount of suspense to keep youngsters happy while still being watchable by us older folks. The stories were excellent, being based on the original books, and in fact, as a fan of the books, I think the adaptations were very sympathetic to the originals. The animation and narration are first class, and if you are a fan of the books, you won't be disappointed, and if you were a fan of Bagpuss and the other output from Smallfilms such as the Klangers then this will be right up your street.

    • Trivia
Even though the Moomin books are written in Swedish, only episodes 1-13 were originally aired in Sweden, narrated by Birgitta Ulfsson. A new not yet restored Swedish version narrated by Mark Levengood, also including additional voice actors, was aired in Sweden in 2008, but it still wasn't the complete series. Then starting in 2010 the complete restored version was broadcast, with the same narrator and mostly the same voice actors as in the 2008 version.
    • Alternate versions
For broadcast on Children's ITV in 1983-1986 in the UK, the original 78 episodes were cut into a 100 episodes of 5 minutes duration each. At the time some material from the original version was deemed to be too strong for children's viewing.
