South Africa's Akin Omotoso is on something of a hot streak. Already a well known and respected actor seen in titles such as Blood Diamond, Shake Hands With The Devil and Lord Of War, Omotoso came to international attention as a director with 2011 drama Man On Ground. Omotoso has kept busy on both sides of the camera since then, scoring a huge local boxoffice hit with romcom Tell Me Sweet Something and is now back on the international festival circuit with his latest directorial effort Vaya, due to have its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Nhlanhla has no money to pay for his girlfriend’s dowry. His problems seem to be solved when his cousin Xolani, from the big city tells him...

For many Americans, it's impossible to imagine what life in the African nation of Rwanda is like. Maybe you know of its war-torn past and the Rwandan Genocide that killed nearly a million people as depicted in dramas like the Don Cheadle-fronted Hotel Rwanda, Shake Hands With the Devil, Sometimes in April with Idris Elba or Hugh Dancy's Beyond the Gates. But nearly 20 years have passed since this atrocity ripped the country's sense of community apart, and now is the time for a new story to emerge from Rwanda, one full of hope, joy, and inspiration. All of the above can be found above in the trailer for the documentary Sweet Dreams. This doc centers on a remarkable group of women who wished to drum in a new era in Rwanda, so they started a drum circle, defying conventions that only men may play the instrument. But literally...

Michael Douglas gets fed up with clowning around in The Game.
The 1997 thriller The Game is the second film by leading Hollywood filmmaker David Fincher (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) to receive a special makeover by Criterion, following his 2008 drama The Strange Case of Benjamin Button.
The film focuses on the enormously wealthy and emotionally remote investment banker Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas, Traffic), who receives a strange gift from his ne’er-do-well younger brother ( Sean Penn, Fair Game) on his forty-eighth birthday: a voucher for a game that, if he agrees to play it, will change his life.
That’s the high-concept basis for story, which kicks off a trip down a rabbit hole that proves to be puzzling, terrifying, dangerous and exhilarating for Nicholas (and the viewers that join him for his game). Compared to other fincher films,...

There's no denying at this point that African cinema is undergoing a major change and audiences around the world can expect to see a lot more projects from the continent in coming years. And if there's a face to the new wave of African cinema that face belongs as much to Akin Omotoso as to anyone else. The Nigerian born, South Africa based Omotoso is a quadruple threat, active as a writer, producer, actor and director. As an actor he has been one of the go-to players for Hollywood casting agents looking for a bit of authenticity, appearing in high profile projects such as Blood Diamond, Shake Hands With The Devil and Lord Of War. In his producing and directing work, however, Omotoso tells more...

Samuel Goldwyn Films are hoping to stir up the pot during the politico season, picking up Ami Horowitz and Matthew Groff’s Un, Me and setting it for a September release. Like any large-bodied institution, the Un is a governing body where politics have notoriously hindered efforts by often coming late to the party...and by party we mean genocides, huge scale human rights abuses and violations. Gist: This takes a harrowing and humorous tour deep into the heart of the United Nations as Horowitz gains unprecedented access to the Un shooting across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. Horowitz constantly throws himself into wild and unpredictable situations that are eye opening, shocking and often hilarious. With unprecedented access, “Un Me” exposes the incompetence and corruption at the core of the United Nations and its disregard for the people and principles it was founded to defend. Worth Noting: The film...

Davis Films has released a first look new photo from Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, which features stars Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington. The film is being directed by Michael J. Bassett in his first American feature film as a helmer. Bassett garnered recent fame with his Solomon Kane adaptation back 2009. He is an extremely talented filmmaker which is why I am looking forward to his take on the Silent Hill universe.
The studio also announced that Carrie-Anne Moss and Malcolm McDowell have joined the cast of this 3D thriller, which is currently shooting in Toronto.
The newest residents of Michael J. Bassett’s world of Silent Hill: Revelation 3D are Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix Trilogy, Memento, Unthinkable, Chocolat) who will play “Claudia Wolf” and Malcolm McDowell (Easy A, Entourage, A Clockwork Orange) as “Leonard Wolf.” Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is currently lensing in Toronto and produced by Samuel Hadida and Don Carmody.

Sony Pictures is currently working on the sequel to the Silent Hill movie, and while they've been filming, they just issued this press release revealing that two new cast members were coming aboard the project, and they provided an all new official picture from the film.
I'm going to be 100% honest when I say, my interest for this film is almost nil. I didn't care for the first film, and I'm not sold on them pulling off this sequel...in 3D no less. I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but that still doesn't improve my attitude for this film. Either way, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Malcolm McDowell have both been confirmed for Silent Hill: Revelation 3D. Here's the press release:

I've said it before and I'll says it again: I enjoyed Christophe Gans' Silent Hill film. It was a film dripping in spooky atmospherics and general strangeness. When the sequel was first announced many would probably have dismissed it as a cheap cash-in on a known title. It's not like the original was a box office hit. Alas, it has its fans.

Silent Hill: Revelations 3D is gearing up to be one heck hell of a horror sequel. Why? Well, even with returning vets like Sean Bean and Radha Mitchell, the sequel has just added none other than The Matrix‘s Trinity herself – Carrie Anne Moss And Malcolm McDowell from A Clockwork Orange.

Last week we learned that the sequel to Silent Hill had begun filming and that Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington were set to star in the film. What we hadn’t heard was wether or not this film would be connected to the original in any way. Now we know. A press release went out to day confirming the stars of the first film will reprise their roles in Silent Hill: Revelation 3D. That’s right, Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Deborah Kara Unger will all be coming back for the sequel. This may come as a surprise to some of you, as it does to me. The ending to the first film was a bit ambiguous, but now it’s obvious Mitchell survived her ordeal in the haunted town, which will now wreak havoc on Clemens and Harington.

Lifeless film is further evidence of director Oliver Stone’s decline. Once America’s most exciting filmmaker, Stone hasn’t delivered a film with any teeth since 1995’s Nixon. Labeouf and Mulligan generate no sparks on-screen, and the story feels forced from the protracted opening to the final, Disney-esque denouement. Only a brief cameo by Charlie Sheen,...

There aren't a ton of new releases on DVD and Blu-ray this week, but it's all about quality over quantity. Most notably, David Fincher's critically acclaimed The Social Network hits stores today along with Alexandre Aja's Piranha remake (which is actually available in 3D, if you have a 3D TV), and if you look closely you can find pretty solid deals out there for both. So without further ado, here's a rundown of titles arriving on DVD and Blu-ray in the near future.

The relatively young distribution arm of Tribeca Enterprises, Tribeca Film, just grabbed the Us rights to The Big Bang Club in what may prove to be it’s biggest acquisition to date. Tribeca will be theatrically releasing the film, which had it’s world premiere at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, in the second quarter of 2011, as well as on video-on-demand, and other platforms. The character-driven drama was written and directed by South African Steven Silver, who exec-produced Shake Hands With The Devil and another 2010 Tiff premiere, Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie. Gist: With a B-list cast of Ryan Phillippe, Malin Akerman, Taylor Kitsch, Neels Van Jaarsveld and Frank Rautenbach, The Bang Bang Club was the name given to four young photographers, Greg Marinovich, Kevin Carter, Ken Oosterbroek and Joao Silva, whose photographs captured the final bloody days of white rule in South Africa and the final demise of apartheid.

On a given day, weeks after the genocide waged by Hutu extremists against Tutsis and Hutu moderates had begun in the streets of Kigali, General Roméo Dallaire, the Canadian Force Commander of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Rwanda (Unamir), slowly walks down a empty road, littered with debris left by people fleeing for their lives. The only sound is that of a piece of plastic he is kicking aimlessly with the side of his boot—and the distant sound of gunfire. Behind him a fellow office warns him not to stray ahead of the rest of the troops, not to make himself an open target. But it seems Dellaire is beyond caring and he continues to stroll without purpose down the road. Death by a sudden bullet would be a relief.
But how much of what happened in Rwanda that April in 1994 could Dallaire have prevented? So asks Roger Spottiswoode...

The Slamdance Film Festival begins in two weeks and many of the films are looming darkly. The Wild Hunt, from Darclight Entertainment, blurs genres, but centrally the film is one of lost love and the danger of blurring reality with fantasy. Much of The Wild Hunt takes place during a medieval re-enactment in which newcomer Erik (Ricky Mabe) finds the egos of the players out-of-control. This flick also stars Kyle Gatehouse (Killer Wave), Trevor Hayes (The Dead Zone), and Mark Antony Krupa (Shake Hands with the Devil) and a trailer is below. Watch the theatrical clip till the end when The Wild Hunt reveals its true horrific colours.
A synopsis for The Wild Hunt here:
"A modern medieval saga, The Wild Hunt tells the story of Erik Magnusson, a young man who decides to follow his estranged girlfriend Evelyn into a medieval re-enactment game when he discovers that she has...

There have been several recent films looking back on the African genocide, including The Last King of Scotland and Hotel Rwanda. In spite of the knowledge of the events, the entire region hasn’t received the kind of support and help that it deserves. For most people in the developed world, the searing films that the genocides “inspired” seem to be the only witness of the events. Now comes Shake Hands With the Devil, which is based on a book by General Romeo Dallaire about how his request for more aide before the 1994 Rwandan genocide went unanswered by the United Nations. The film is being directed by Roger Spottiswoode (The 6th Day, Tomorrow Never Dies) and stars Roy Dupuis in the role of General Dallaire. The film actually premiered at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival but has just recently picked up a distributor. It is planning to be released in...

Today's trailer is for an indie that has been on hold for quite a few years. Shake Hands with the Devil first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival way back in 2007. In fact, director Roger Spottiswoode actually directed another film (The Children of Huang Shi) while waiting for this to be released. Regent Releasing is finally bringing Shake Hands with the Devil to theaters in 2010 and has debuted a trailer for it on Apple. I'm featuring it for a few reasons. First, while some of the dialogue looks rough, the story looks incredible. Second, the cinematography and locations look gorgeous as well. It stars Roy Dupuis and Deborah Unger. Watch the trailer for Roger Spottiswoode's Shake Hands with the Devil: [flv:http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/shakehandswiththedevil-trailer.flv http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/shakehandswiththedevil-trailer.jpg 598 248] You can also watch the Shake Hands with the Devil trailer in High Definition on Apple The story follows Emma, a journalist, as well as the personal journey...

Despicable Me
Second trailer for this 3D animated comedy, and this time it's focusing on arch villain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) trying to break into the headquarters of a rival bad guy. This looks like fun and the bit with the shark had me howling. Check it out on July 9.
Sherlock Holmes
A second trailer for the new Holmes fllck with Robert Downey Jr. in the title role aided by Jude Law as Watson. Pretty sure this will have awesome written all over it. Plan a trip to Baker Street for Christmas day.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
There's some serious spectacle at work here. Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this adaptation of a video game I've never played, but I'm pretty sure that's not necessary. It seems tailor-made to be a summer blockbuster, which is good because it comes out on May 28.

Lafleur's Continental Is A Multiple Winner At The Jutra Awards
Drama Continental: Un Film Sans Fusil (a Film Without Guns) emerged the big winner at the Jutra Awards in Quebec, Canada on Sunday, after winning four prizes including the coveted prize for Best Picture.
The movie also took home awards for Best Screenplay, Best Director for Stephane Lafleur and Best Supporting Actor for Real Bosse.
It wasn't the only quadruple-winner of the night - the Keira Knightley-starring period drama Silk claimed honours for technical skill, including Best Cinematography and Best Costume.
But the Jutra Awards proved to be less fruitful for comedy/drama Les 3 p'tits cochones (The 3 Little Pigs), which won just one of the 13 gongs it was nominated for. It was recognised for the Billet d'or (Golden ticket) trophy, which is handed to the most successful domestic film at the Quebec box office after scooping profits of $4.5 million (GBP2.25 million) in 2007.
Meanwhile, Roy Dupuis was named Best Actor for his role in Shake Hands With the Devil, and Best Actress went to Guylaine Tremblay for her part in Contre toute esperance.

Polley's Alzheimer's drama, which earned Julie Christie an Oscar nomination for best actress, took Genies for best Canadian film and best director.
Away From Her also dominated the acting categories, as Gordon Pinsent won for best actor, Christie earned the best actress crown and Kristen Thomson won for supporting actress.
Cronenberg's Eastern Promises, a portrait of the Russian mafia in London, generated trophies for best original screenplay for British playwright Steven Knight and a supporting actor honor for German actor Armin Mueller-Stahl.
A number of longtime Cronenberg collaborators also earned craft awards, as Peter Suschitzky went home with hardware for best cinematography, Ronald Sanders won for editing and Howard Shore grabbed the trophy for original score.
Roger Spottiswoode's Rwandan biopic Shake Hands With the Devil, which went into the Genies with 12 nominations, only took home hardware for best original song.

Also joining the Special Presentations program is Adam Vollick's Here Is What Is, a portrait of famed record producer Daniel Lanois, and Guy Maddin's My Winnipeg, billed as a "docu-fantasia" about the filmmaker's hometown.
Canadian films unspooling as part of Toronto's Contemporary World Cinema section include Leonard Farlinger's All Hat; Bruce Sweeney's American Venus, starring Rebecca De Mornay; Bernard Emond's Contre Toute Esperance, which will also screen in Locarno; and Carl Bessai's Carrie-Anne Moss starrer Normal.
