I was asked to bring some very rare space artifacts to Long Beach for a science segment. After wasting most of the day at the LB Convention Center, the producers were thrilled with the stuff I brought. They asked me if they could come to my home to film other artifacts, plus they wanted me to bring other rare pieces from my collection, that I have on loan at the San Diego Aerospace Museum. Luckily I didn't waste anymore of my time with their requests for other artifacts.
In their ultimate wisdom, the PN producers decided not to air my collection. I was disappointed but I also understood that people change their mind and being in the film business for years, I knew this happens all the time.
The problem I have is that the shows producers kept telling me they wanted this show to be really special and that the show was going to be a more serious & educational format. That was the only reason I agreed to spend my time prepping & sharing my collection with them.
Imagine my surprise when I finally saw the show. It turns out that it's a trendy, fast edit, no content, all smoke & mirrors type show that retarded people laugh about how stupid it is. The writing is pathetic, the photography is a joke, the content & format are so boring that I'd rather watch paint dry.
The sad part is that Pop Nation should have been one of the greatest shows on the Discovery Channel. Instead of aiming high and raising the bar for people who aren't brain dead, the producers decided to take the low road and treat everyone like a 5 years old. How many times do we need to see the same piece of tape about the same item on one show repeated over & over & over ad nausem ? There is so much wasted time due to all of these repeated clips, that it's painfully obvious that the inmates are running the asylum.
The premise of this show is wonderful, it brings artifacts from private collections, that are rarely or never seen by the public, into your living room every week. The viewer gets the opportunity to see artifacts, beautiful works of art, major pieces of historical importance and virtually every other type of collectible, that is usually locked away in vaults.
What a fascinating format that private collections we never get to see, are shown to us and we're educated about their history. It was also a great format to show the public how private collectors are also responsible caretakers of historical artifacts and how they restored & protected them.
However, instead of raising the bar, thereby, God forbid, teach the public a little about the history or collectibility of artifacts on their show, the producers lowered it so an ant could do the limbo. It's so badly done, even single digit IQ watchers thought this show was a waste of time.
Shame on the Discovery Channel for allowing these producers to ruin, yet another great idea, for a show that could have been as big as any TV show now on the air. Pop Nation does for 60's, 70's & 80's collectibles, what Ted Bundy did for blind dating.
