Image
Rami Malek bagged the Oscar for Best Lead Actor for appearing as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, but his very first break in Hollywood came with a small role in the comedy-drama series Gilmore Girls. Malek, who will next be seen in the star-studded movie Nuremberg, showed up in the Stars Hollow universe as Andy in Gilmore Girls Season 4 Episode 11. Aired on January 27, 2004, the episode, titled In the Clamor and the Clangor, features Andy as one of Lane Kim’s fellow Seventh-day Adventist Bible study members.

‘Sketch’ Saved: How Angel Studios Rescued a Festival Darling and Blessed It With a Big Summertime Release
Image
Last fall, writer-director Seth Worley’s debut feature “Sketch” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to a warm welcome.

A charming, family-friendly comedy about a little girl who has just lost her mother and whose somewhat disturbing doodles spring to life and menace her small town, “Sketch” was well-reviewed out of the festival (RogerEbert.com’s review praised the way it “examines all the ways grief can manifest intensely”) but found itself in a frustrating place too many independent features find themselves in — without a distributor.

“It seemed that everyone loved the movie, but nobody knew how to sell it,” Worley told TheWrap.

Months went by and then an unlikely savior emerged. At their CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas this spring, Angel Studios, the company behind grassroots phenomenon “Sound of Freedom,” announced that it had acquired “Sketch” and would be giving it a prime summer release date. The studio,...

New Paramount Plans to Ramp Film Slate Up to 20 Theatrical Films Per Year
Image
David Ellison has plans that might be music to movie theaters execs’ ears. In a press conference on Tuesday, Paramount’s new leadership team under Skydance says it has a goal of producing up to 20 films per year in a dramatic ramp up of its movie output, and the focus will be on bringing them to theaters.

In their first meeting with reporters in Hollywood since the Paramount Skydance merger closed on Thursday, studio execs said, as TheWrap reported last week, that “Star Trek” will be a top priority for the new company going forward, and that whatever direction Paramount Skydance takes with Gene Roddenberry’s legendary sci-fi series will be one that unifies both the film and TV divisions.

“We are not going to be siloed off so that there’s one conversation happening about television and another conversation happening about film,” co-chair Dana Goldberg said. “We’re going...

Disney has ruled the live-action remake game for years, but DreamWorks is starting to close the gap. It seems that Toothless and Hiccup are not only winning hearts again, they are proving that DreamWorks can turn nostalgia into big-screen gold, too.

Reno 911! Cast: Where The Actors Are Now
Image
"Reno 911!" was a satirical take on "Cops," the popular reality docuseries following real cops in the line of duty, making arrests and chasing "bad guys." Airing originally on Comedy Central from 2003 to 2009, "Reno 911!" took the bumbling cop trope to its logical conclusion, portraying the officers of the fictional Reno Sheriff's Department as incompetent stooges. The show existed within the peak of crude, offensive comedy that dominated the 2000s; it featured politically incorrect skits that dealt with race, gender, sex work, and mental illness. Though much of the depiction of mental illness did not age well, a majority of the comedy is strangely still funny. The comedy of "Reno" still elicits chuckles by today's standards due to society's evolved perception of police. After about 15 years of police brutality and misconduct cases, it feels nice to laugh at ineffective or downright problematic police work in a low-stakes way via the cast's antics.

'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning' Overtakes Industry-Changing Superhero Blockbuster at the Global Box Office
Image
In the year 2008, Marvel Studios debuted the film Iron Man, with no idea that it would alter the landscape of blockbuster filmmaking forever. The movie was directed by Jon Favreau, and reportedly almost starred Tom Cruise in the lead role. But the director was determined to hire the then-wildcard Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. After a difficult tug-of-war with the studio, Downey was signed for the project, which became a runaway hit at the box office. Iron Man grossed around $585 million worldwide, and has now been overtaken by the latest film starring the man who almost headlined it.

Having played in theaters worldwide for nearly two months, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is nearing the end of its run. The movie recently became one of the top 200 hits in global box office history, after overtaking the first Night at the Museum hit. It has also surpassed the $582 million haul of Tangled,...

'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ Enters Elite Box Office List After Crushing Ben Stiller's Highest Grossing Live Action Film
Image
Stars Tom Cruise and Ben Stillerare buddies; Cruise's supporting performance in the comedy film Tropic Thunder, directed by and starring Stiller, is still memorable all these years later. More recently, actor Adam Scott revealed that he'd studied Cruise while filming an elaborate oner for the opening episode of the second season of Severance, which counts Stiller as an executive producer and a director. This weekend, Cruise and Stiller's most iconic franchises clashed at the global box office, with Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoningovertaking the lifetime global haul of Stiller's first Night at the Museum hit.

In doing so, The Final Reckoning also entered a rather special list. It's now one of the 200 highest-grossing movies in global box office history. However, this achievement comes with a large asterisk, as The Final Reckoning's massive budget prevents it from being described as a bona fide hit. The movie has grossed around...

The British Museum Really Wanted People to Know That the ‘Night at the Museum’ Movies Weren’t Accurate
Image
The movie that tricked a generation of children into believing that learning is fun, A Night at the Museum, spawned two sequels and an animated spin-off — only one of which included a subplot about Ben Stiller getting the hots for deceased aviation legend Amelia Earhart.

Now the franchise is reportedly being rebooted. Yes, there’s going to be a brand new Night at the Museum movie featuring a fresh crop of characters who presumably won’t be played by people who are busy directing prestige streaming shows.

While one might assume that real-life museum employees would be happy about this news, at least one famous museum wasn’t exactly thrilled with the last movie.

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb found Stiller’s character Larry packing up his magically living exhibits and taking them to London to visit The British Museum, all because of a magical glowing tablet or some such nonsense.

A reboot of Night at the Museum is in the works at 20th Century Studios. As first reported by Deadline, the reimagining will return to the museum with a new story and a fresh set of characters.

Plot details remain under wraps, but Tripper Clancy has been tapped to write the script. Shawn Levy is returning to produce through his 21 Laps company alongside Dan Levine. Clancy’s previous credits include Netflix’s I Am Not Okay With This and the action comedy Stuber.

According to Deadline, 21 Laps has begun development on a reimagining of Night at the Museum for 20th Century Studios, with Tripper Clancy tapped to write the script. The screenwriter is best known for writing the 2019 buddy action flick Stuber, starring Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani, and the Kevin Hart-led Roku series Die Hart. “Die Hart” writer Tripper Clancy is set to write a new reimagining of “Night at the Museum” for Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps banner and 20th Century Studios, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, however the story centers on a new adventure inside the museum with new characters, according to Deadline which first reported the news.

Levy and Dan Levine will produce via 21 Laps, with Emily Morris overseeing the project for the company.

“The Night at the Museum” franchise is based on a 1993 children’s book by Milan Trenc about a night watchman whose job turns chaotic when museum exhibits come alive after dark. Levy and star Ben Stiller created the franchise with three successful movies under 20th Century Fox.

Ben Stiller's $500 Million Franchise is Coming Back to Life With Newly Announced Reboot
Image
The exhibits are waking up once more — and this time, it's a whole new generation of chaos. Deadline is reporting that 21 Laps is developing a brand-new Night at the Museum reboot for 20th Century Studios, with Die Hartwriter Tripper Clancy set to pen the script. The new spin on the midnight madness in the exhibits won't continue the saga of Ben Stiller’s Larry Daley, but instead introduces all-new characters and a reimagined story set at the museum. Franchise mainstay Shawn Levy, who directed the original trilogy, returns to produce alongside Dan Levine, with Emily Morris overseeing for 21 Laps.

As for why we're returning to this story? Easy to explain. The Night at the Museum trilogy proved to be a major box office success, with all three films combining for approximately $1.35 billion worldwide, with the original 2006 film earning around $574 million globally, establishing the franchise as a hit. Its 2009 sequel,...

'Night at the Museum' Reboot Officially in the Works
Image
It's never too late for any franchise to make a comeback. Time has proven on many occasions that some properties are beloved enough that fans will welcome their return, and 20th Century Studios is hoping that will be the case with Night at the Museum, a family franchise that once brought in big box office for the studio during its heyday. It looks like another adventure is in the works, but it appears to be taking a retooled spin rather than being a mere sequel.

Per Deadline, a new Night at the Museum is being written by Tripper Clancy, and this will be a reimagining of the franchise rather than a follow-up to the last film. Story details are scarce, but it looks like the film will explore new characters at the museum, involved in a brand-new story. Shawn Levy, who directed the first three films, will produce for the 21 Laps banner,...

The original film came out in 2006 and was followed by Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009) and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014). All three films, which grossed over $540 million at the domestic box office, were directed by Levy.

Toys "R" Us Is Getting a Live-Action Movie in the Vein of 'Night at the Museum'
Image
That sound you heard was the collective tug at the nostalgic heartstrings of Gen Xers and Millennials all across America. Toys "R" Us, the beloved toy store and private equity victim, is getting new life on the silver screen as production company Story Kitchen and Toys "R" Us Studios are working on a movie about the whimsical retail chain. The live-action film is said to be in the vein of Night at the Museum, Big, and other toy-inspired movies of yesteryear, like Jumanji and Barbie.

Story Kitchen, which is a newer production company, is the brainchild of John Wick writer-creator Derek Kolstad, Sonic the Hedgehog producer Dmitri M. Johnson and former APA partner Mike Goldberg. The team has been pretty successful at adapting non-traditional IP such as video games with Sega's Sonic The Hedgehog franchise and is currently developing the Tomb Raider franchise, which includes the animated TV series...

Robin Williams, Ben Stiller, Pierfrancesco Favino, Patrick Gallagher, Mizuo Peck, Rami Malek, and Crystal the Monkey in La Nuit au musée (2006)
Toys R Us is becoming a movie, as Hollywood continues to champion massive companies
Robin Williams, Ben Stiller, Pierfrancesco Favino, Patrick Gallagher, Mizuo Peck, Rami Malek, and Crystal the Monkey in La Nuit au musée (2006)
The once-bankrupt Toys R Us is now going to be a movie, possibly more than one movie. More on the story right here.

The film part of this story first.

Toys R Us Studios and Story Kitchen are coming together to make a live action movie about, well, Toys R Us. There’s a reasonable film idea too in the idea of something akin to a toy shop coming to life, and already one of the touchpoints cited by the producers is the Night At The Museum series. Further names such as Jumanji, Back To The Future, Big and – of course – Barbie have popped up in stories about the new film.

The non-film part is Hollywood’s current fixation with the altar of big business for its storytelling. Not just the products of big business a la Barbie, but the big names themselves. Blackberry is as good as these productions have got.

Hollywood is fighting an addiction and it’s losing. According to Variety, Story Kitchen is pairing up with Toys 'R' Us Studios to bring the world something that none of us asked for — a live-action film. No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. This project will somehow be a live-action movie about the chain of stores that has been struggling financially for a number of years.

From the original report, the movie is looking to harness favorites like Night at the Museum, Big, Jumanji, and other beloved titles to pull its plot together. Essentially, the production will lean heavily on the nostalgia factor that comes with the store’s name, pandering to the millennial crowd, with Story Kitchen...
