Oh the innocence of children...of which causes amazement and some good humored moments in us adults, and that's the thematic behind the hilarious "A Origem dos
Bebês Segundo Kiki Cavalcanti" ("The Origin of Babies According to Kiki Cavalcanti"). Anna Muylaert's film presents the point of a view of a 6-year-old girl who talks
to her school friends about one of the most important question on childrens lives: where do babies come from? Since she's too quick on the issue and the teacher is
completely ignored when she tries to answer in the usual diplomatic and not realistic way of the adults, Kiki talks about her parents relationship and eventually the
origins of babies. She isn't totally wrong on the issue, she's halfway there but just seeing her explanation is amazing and funny.
If the kid isn't totally responsible for the comedy in the film it's because there's the presence of Marisa Orth and Antonio Abujamra playing her parents, a very odd
couple whose love faded away so they keep pushing each other's button through most of the movie, from a small reprehension of hers on the man during breakfast up to an
explosive visit to the zoo with the kids. Anything can happen to this family.
Muylaert uses a simple theme without falling into excessive simplicity, everything is carefully planned and the use of a non-linear narrative makes it an even more
interesting piece to watch where you keep imagining the next scene, the next idea that comes to the kid's head. Right in the opening sequence where you see a group of police officers raiding a home you keep wondering what's this has to do with such a
comic title but there's a whole explanation and it revolves around Kiki's confusion thrown against the adult world. One of the best shorts of its kind but I think it onlyworks if you don't imagine what goes around today's kids heads since they're far too smart these days, but back in the day you had inquisitive kids like the ones depicted in the film. 10/10.
