Stormzy, the multi-award winning British rapper, singer and songwriter and the most recognizable name to come out of London’s grime scene, has moved into film and TV production with the launch of #Merky Films.
The new venture — which follows on from Stormzy’s #Merky branded book imprint and sports scholarship — has set a purported mission to “champion new voices, fresh, powerful narratives and innovative forms of expression within British cinema and television” and “create projects that connect communities, celebrate culture and inspire meaningful change.”
Alongside launching #Merky Film, Stormzy has also unveiled the company’s debut project, the short film “Big Man.”
Produced in association with Apple and shot entirely on an iPhone, the film is directed by Aneil Karia, winner of the best live action short film Oscar in 2021 for “The Long Goodbye” alongside Riz Ahmed and who recently wrapped a feature-length modern adaptation of “Hamlet” also starring Ahmed,...

Directors Fernando Coimbra (“A Wolf at the Door”) and top production houses Gullane (“Senna”), O2 Filmes (“City of God”) and Boutique Filmes (“3%”) feature among 10 new productions announced Monday by Netflix.
The new announcements matter. Netflix does not break out client figures for individual countries. Brazil ranks, however, as its second-biggest market globally with 20.6 million paid subscribers, according to global analyst Omdia estimates. That places it ahead of the U.K. (17.7 million), Germany (17.5 million), and France (14.6 million).
One of Brazil’s biggest challenges is to export its biggest swings. Save for a rare exception like “Senna,” Netflix Brazilian shows are not global plays. Yet some achieve global viewership via Netflix, led in 2024 by “Desperate Lies,” Burning Betrayal,” “Senna” (which bowed Nov. 29), “Bionic” and “Good Morning, Veronica” according to PlumResearch. Further breakouts this year take in “A Tragedy Foretold: Flight 3054,” “Sintonia,” “Senna,” “Burning Betrayal” and “Stranded with My Mother in Law,...

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered made us all come back to some of our favorite childhood experiences. But it also made us come back to one of Bethesda Game Studios’ best quests ever. If you don’t know yet, we’re talking about the Dark Brotherhood questline. It’s one of the best ever, but should you join the Brotherhood?
Most Oblivion Remastered players cast themselves as noble heroes, so the idea of joining a death cult of assassins like the Dark Brotherhood might seem like a hard no. After all, it starts with murdering an innocent person; how does it make sense? Despite that, it’s one of the best questlines in RPG history. Here’s why its pros far outweigh the cons.
The pros of joining the Dark Brotherhood in the Oblivion Remaster
The Dark Brotherhood questline is still one of the best we’ve seen from Bethesda across all their RPGs.

Black Clover’s Lucius has made quite an ill reputation for himself due to his nefarious deeds. Making a paladin out of Sister Lily? Oh, come on! Poor Asta deserved better than to see his crush become Destruction Bazooka Ultra Max Pro.
Other than that, Lucius picked the most traumatizing memories of Black Clover’s main characters to create more Paladins out of them. From Nacht to the Silva siblings, the villain made sure not to spare anyone’s trauma. But is Lucius Zogratis really the most hated villain? Because there is one guy who is universally hated by the entire anime fandom, who remains at the top of the most detestable villains’ group chat.
Lucius might be bad, but he isn’t the worst
Let’s first find out what Lucius is responsible for in Black Clover and how much damage he has caused. In the final arc of Black Clover,...

Ranker is a popular place on the Internet where people can rank whatever they want, however, they want, and whenever they want. This is always a fan-focused ranking system, and it is never officially tied to the people behind the projects in question. Recently, a large survey was organized, whose goal was to determine the most hated TV characters of all time. The list includes more than 150 characters, but in our report, we have decided to list the top ten characters from the site to provide you with better insight, combined with our original comments and opinions, which will add flavor to the whole report.
Of course, since this is indeed an important list, we have decided to report on it, so we are going to bring you the results by listing the top 10 characters on this list, from 10th to first place. We hope you’ll enjoy it!

As we've brought you a new anime recommendation every week, the Bam Smack Pow team has already introduced you to the three best-selling and most popular anime and manga series of all time: One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. While today's anime recommendation isn't quite as popular in terms of sheer sales as the Big Three, it's a consensus pick for the best anime series of all time.
Specifically, we're taking a look at Fullmetal Alchemist. As of this writing, the series is currently the number-two ranked series on fan ranking site MyAnimeList, surpassed only by Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Although Frieren is undeniably an excellent series, to help put these rankings into context, there's at least a bit of recency bias at play here. Frieren is an ongoing series and Fullmetal Alchemist has been completed since 2010. Also worth noting is the fact that Fullmetal Alchemist has about three times as many votes as Frieren.

The Hall, the Hall will tear us apart. Again. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced its new crop of inductees, revealing that New Order got rejected this year. The Hall nominated Joy Division and New Order as one band, which meant that Hall voters had a chance to nab two legendary bands with one vote. Both Joy Division and New Order are ridiculously overqualified for the Hall of Fame as individual units — two of the most influential bands of the past 50 years. But they don’t even go in combined?...

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has stood as the crown jewel of Bethesda’s fantasy RPG for over a decade. But in 2025, the debate comparing it to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has started once more with the recent release of Oblivion Remastered. So, which game is better?
Skyrim undoubtedly offers a more polished and accessible experience, but its quest design pales in comparison to the narrative richness and unpredictability that Oblivion had nearly two decades ago. Skyrim may be the better game overall, but the quests in Oblivion have stuck with us in a way that its successor didn’t.
Skyrim vs Oblivion is a comparison that goes both ways
Skyrim’s strength lies in its accessibility and beauty. The game welcomes players with an intuitive Ui, modern visuals, and a relatively forgiving gameplay loop that’s easy to pick up. It has a level system that’s that...

Jason Isaacs is a widely admired English actor who has been doing standout work on stages and screens big and small for some 35 years. But he has never been more at the center of the cultural conversation than he has been over the past few months, during which seemingly everyone has been devouring, dissecting and discussing the third installment of Mike White’s hit HBO drama series The White Lotus, on which he played Timothy Ratliff, a wealthy businessman who is on vacation with his family in Thailand and privately spiraling as his life begins melting down back in North Carolina.

2025 was a great year for anime, but unfortunately, this wasn’t the case for all of them. The Beginning After the End has only had 3 episodes released so far, and fans are already asking for it to be canceled and potentially reworked by another studio. Studio A-Cat has done a terrible job adapting the series.
To say that the animation doesn’t do justice to The Beginning After the End would be a heavy understatement. It got to the point that even TurtleMe had to explain his side of the story.
Fans have given up on the series getting any better, and it’s incredibly tragic that a series as unique as this got the short end of the stick. The webtoon deserved better. It probably will not get a remake, like Fullmetal Alchemist did with Brotherhood, and the only hope is if the author himself intervenes. However, is that...

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhoodstands as one of the best-written anime series of all time, but it's not just the strong, deep themes driving the story forward. The anime is also a gripping adventure because of how well-written its characters are, with remarkably few of them being basic archetypes or stock characters. Even minor characters like the chimeras have heart, and main cast members have some of the strongest writing of all.
Good writing in an anime like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood call for more than funny one-liners in the dialogue or a basic backstory to explain where the character came from. The best-written cast members of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are designed with a balance of heartwarming values, inspirational strength, realistic flaws, and sympathetic insecurities. Such robust writing is even more effective when it's worked into a dynamic personal arc as the character grows and changes, showing more sides of themselves over time.

Many consider anime solely for children because it is animated. This couldn't be further from the truth, and a good number of anime series target young adults and older fans. Several series, like Devilman Crybaby, have truly disturbing episodes capable of scarring an audience for life.
More often than not, anime can verge on the truly horrific. Just because it is an animation doesn't mean it can't be scarring. Certain anime episodes are so brutal that they are guaranteed to terrify any casual anime viewer. There are many reasons people don't rewatch Berserk, but Episode 25 plays a large part.

The following contains light spoilers for Ludwig Series 1, Episode 1, now streaming on BritBox.
David Mitchell has carved out his space in British television by playing charmingly strange characters, and that trend continues with Ludwig, the new detective comedy-drama coming to BritBox after its successful outing on BBC One. Mitchell is neither creator nor writer on Ludwig -- that would be Mark Brotherhood -- but the show feels like it was tailored to him. It's a mystery series, but at its heart, it's a workplace comedy that's just got some dead bodies in it.
Ludwig is titled after the nickname of John Taylor, a reclusive character who crafts newspaper puzzles. But when John's straight-laced twin brother James goes missing, his wife Lucy recruits John to pose as James and look for clues about his disappearance. Naturally, this half-cocked scheme spins out of control, and what follows will be immediately addictive to...

Not all anime heroes are created equal. Most of them have inherent powers that they develop over time. But others only gain their magical powers later in their lives. No matter how they receive their abilities, these anime characters had to go through some difficult trials (and traumas in some cases) to finally gain their magical powers.
To borrow a phrase from the Harry Potter franchise, the best anime characters who start out as Muggles but gain magical abilities later are some of the best characters, period. In a lot of cases, they have to work twice as hard to gain their powers, to go through something unspeakable. However, once they are on the other side, they are as powerful (if not more so) than any of the other magic users in their franchise. No matter their origins, these characters have proven themselves excellent magic users.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has a complex plot filled with comedy, mystery, and action. It is the jack of all trades. There is a reason behind why it ruled as the #1 anime on My Anime List for years.
The anime has gone to great lengths to give the audience the best experience. Thus, it has also received an original character called Isaac McDougal, who was not present in the original source material. But he is still considered one of the greatest additions to the anime.

Both the Fullmetal Alchemist anime and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are well known for their dark moments. While the anime series are positive overall, these instances have become a major part of how they are remembered. With so many twists and dark details in these anime, many of them are forgotten compared to the more show-stealing moments. Plus, some of these instances are limited to only one adaptation, making them easier to miss.
Although the 2003 anime is darker, both Fullmetal Alchemist adaptations have positive things to say about human nature and the ability to spread kindness in the world. These messages come across strongly because they are put in contrast with dark moments. For every evil choice one character makes or unpleasant twist, there's usually a positive moment to contrast it. That's why these anime have earned such a positive reputation over the years.

Predominantly, the Shonen genre has always maintained a clear dominance when it came to the popularity and good quality of anime. On top of that, very few have reached the level of perfection that the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise has achieved, let alone a romance.

The rich and diverse medium of anime invites fans to experience no shortage of captivating stories. Pushing the bounds of narrative virtuosity, visual technique, and artistic expressiveness, the best anime films and series are universally acclaimed as masterpieces. In the opulent tapestry of the medium’s cream of the crop, titles like Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Gintama, and countless other esteemed works make new fans fall in love with anime and encourage audiences to revisit them time and time again. However, like any prolific medium, anime hardly counts only admired masterworks and celebrated smash hits. Aside from the plethora of forgettable and mediocre titles, a few are situated on the very opposite end of the spectrum from the medium’s revered sensations — the worst anime of all time.

Since George Romero first pioneered the concept with his Living Dead films, the zombie apocalypse has become a staple of horror films. Combining elements of monster movies and the disaster genre, these stories can evoke many different fears at once. From illness and death to isolation and societal collapse, zombie apocalypse narratives explore different facets of human nature and, often, the undead themselves are the least terrifying part. Generally, the true danger of such films is other people and the paranoia and desperation that develops among survivors, leaving zombies as a secondary threat. The cult classic, Stake Land, however, upped the horror by introducing a vampire apocalypse, making the undead more threatening than ever.

What makes an action anime shine is its ability to keep up its fast-paced momentum using well-timed action scenes. Most of the time, anime series get bogged down by the amount of filler episodes that get lumped in between arcs. Although this isn't as common anymore with action anime nowadays, it makes the anime suffer, especially when it's anime-only content and not from a preexisting manga source material.
Action anime with tightknit storytelling, which also have episodes that directly project the main plot forward, are more memorable and impactful, since the main objective of the characters doesn't get forgotten or lost in subplots. When every episode counts in an anime, viewers can expect it to be in for a ride through an amazing experience. A strong plot, interesting characters and jaw-dropping fight scenes will make any action anime a show to remember.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which takes players to an open-world feudal Japan, is likely one of the most eagerly awaited video games of 2025. In addition to the game’s setting, which fans have long demanded, Shadows features a lot of other intriguing hooks that have drawn players in, especially its dual characters, Naoe and Yasuke.

With the two characters, each of whom has distinct roles to play during the conflict-filled Azuchi-Momoyama period, players will have a great deal of leeway in how they finish the story. Despite all the anticipation and hype, the game is also heavily criticized for its alleged Dei-heavy implications. Even the reply from the art director of the game couldn’t actually defend all these allegations.

Power levels in anime aren't always a feature, but a byproduct of narrative choices and power scaling. Not all power systems or levels are created equal, however. Some anime over-complicate power levels to seem more complex and detailed than actually being a well-designed power system. A deep pond is better than a shallow ocean when dealing with power levels and showcasing them in the right way.
Nuance is often unnecessary when the end goal is to showcase a believable hierarchy of characters and their power levels. But, some anime take the extra step by implementing a logical and balanced way to understand power levels. By creating a power system which breaks down a character's power level through rank, ability, or magical power, power levels can become easily digestible for audiences to understand at a glance.

Anime has become a popular form of escapism, offering viewers a temporary break from reality with its lighthearted and engaging stories. However, addressing complex topics like mental health can be challenging, as these issues require careful and accurate representation.
Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood | Credits: Studio Bones
Over the past decade, anime has grown into a significant medium that explores so many themes—psychological thriller, horror, neo-noir, and even how mental health struggles, such as depression, are portrayed
Hence, mental health themes and, more than anything else, depression have become everyday topics in regular anime. Some anime are incredibly ‘priceless’ for showing depression properly.
Some series stand out, though, like Attack on Titan and Fullmetal Alchemist, with the profound depth they bring to these complex issues, creating some really compelling stories that touch hearts.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a highly popular, well-respected shonen action anime series with a memorable combat system. Some characters in Fullmetal Alchemist are martial artists or sword users, but most others use the supernatural alchemy-based combat system one way or another. Trained alchemists can reshape matter at will, often with the hard sciences as a reference, and the deadly homunculi use alchemy-made Philosopher's Stones to power their superhuman abilities.
Unlike many other shonen action anime, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood doesn't use a formal ranking system to measure the power of certain characters or techniques, as opposed to ranked jutsu in Naruto or the demon slayer corps' many ranks in Demon Slayer. That allows the fighters in Fullmetal Alchemist to fight on more even ground without RPG-style stats to decide the winner. Even so, it's clear that some warriors in Fma are more capable than others.

As the Sole Survivor journey ends in Fallout 4, they may find themselves staring out at a Commonwealth vastly improved by their presence. The main endings for the game will differ slightly depending on which faction was sided with, with a peaceful life ahead for most. However, there is a clever way to get a truly evil and chaotic ending, and hilariously, it never involves siding with the Institute, the main ‘bad guys’ of the game.
While most will side with one faction and stick with them until the end during any playthrough, looking at how they interact can yield interesting results. In a thread discussing the worst ending possible for Fallout 4, there is an inspired and devious way to make life as bad as possible for everyone. Best of all, this option uses in-game faction quests and completes the main objective of Fallout 4, with no tricks or mods required for maximum chaos.

The first "Fullmetal Alchemist" anime is a victim of its own success. Premiering in 2003, it bolstered the already popular manga about two alchemist brothers (Edward and Alphonse Elric) looking for the Philosopher's Stone. The series was so popular that Studio Bones made a second anime out of the manga — "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" — in 2009.
"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" is widely considered one of the best anime of all time, and it surpassed the first attempt. Unlike the 2003 anime, which had to improvise because of unfinished source material, "Brotherhood" faithfully told Arakawa's story from beginning to end. Nowadays, "Brotherhood" is the definitive "Fullmetal" anime while the 2003 series has been forgotten. When people talk about "Fullmetal Alchemist," they're usually referring to "Brotherhood."
The 2003 "Fullmetal Alchemist" is still good, though. It's downright impressive how the show completed its narrative with only a few of the puzzle pieces — because it knew to re-order them. Even the series' first half,...

Much like live-action movies and TV, the question of the single best anime, or the single most popular anime, is a complicated one. For many people, the anime that made them fans of the medium will always have a special place in their heart. That goes double for shows with a high number of episodes, because that kind of commitment must mean the series is good, right? There's also the unfortunate fact that older titles aren't easily accessible and therefore not widely known unless you track down a very expensive physical copy or pirate it. For instance, "Neon Genesis Evangelion" is widely considered one of the best works of anime ever, but it was virtually unwatchable until a few years ago when Netflix licensed it, meaning you were unlikely to find it in many top anime lists.

Hiromu Arakawa's bestselling shōnen manga, Fullmetal Alchemist, remains a classic staple of the entire medium still today. Fullmetal Alchemist has been praised for several aspects of its story, from its overall character development to the introspective atmosphere it holds throughout the storyline. It is also rather unique compared to other shōnen works, as while the overall narrative is focused on war and strife, battles are not the primary focus. The story of the Elric brothers and the other people they meet is one mainly focused on philosophical themes related to the nature of humanity itself, especially when it comes to the value of human life. There are several chapters in a row that may focus less on action and more on the lives of the characters and what they may later face.
Still, when Fullmetal Alchemist does showcase its action sequences, they are some of the shōnen genre's very best fights.

Ah, "Fullmetal Alchemist." Hiromu Arakawa's breakout manga follows two alchemist brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, on a quest to find the Philosopher's Stone. They tried, and failed, to bring their dead mother Trisha back to life with alchemy — instead of regaining their mother, Ed lost his left leg and Al his whole body. (Ed then gave up his right arm to bind Al's soul to a suit of armor.). Now, only the mythic elixir can help the two brothers heal each other both in body and spirit.
It's one of my favorite anime and a key reason I think about it so often is because it's really two anime in one. Studio Bones adapted Arakawa's original "Fullmetal Alchemist" manga twice, first in 2003 then again in 2009 for a second, more faithful anime known in the West as "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood."
The two shows complement each other by being so different.

Hiromu Arakawa's bestselling shōnen manga, Fullmetal Alchemist, remains one of the most beloved and influential adventure stories in the industry. It is praised for not only its characters, but the development the cast goes through over time, especially as Arakawa works with several complex and often difficult themes. Even so, Fullmetal Alchemist also showcases a much more humorous side often, balancing the darker elements of the story.
The manga follows the Fullmetal Alchemist himself, Edward Elric, as he journeys with his younger brother Alphonse. In an attempt to revive their deceased mother, Ed lost one of his legs and Alphonse his entire body; the boy's soul is now bound to a suit of armor during the duo's search to regain their original forms. Despite the obstacles the two have faced at such a young age, the brothers nevertheless persist in their quest to return to normal and perhaps finally find peace of mind.
