Subhash K Jha in this special feature reflects on Preity Sinta’s career and shares a throwback conversation with the actress when they discussed her role in the hit film Dil Chahta Hai.
At one point of time, Preity Zinta and I used to be friends, so close that she once told me if she had ten guests at her wedding, I would be one of them. We’ve met several times over the years, once famously for lunch at a high-end Mumbai restaurant with Karan Johar, where heads turned towards us as Preity, Karan, and I entered.
The last time I met her was when she came home for lunch in Patna. We haven’t been much in touch since then, after her marriage and babies. But I have only good wishes for this Zinta Dil actress.
Among the work she did, Preity was understandably the proudest of Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai.

Film co-productions between Australia and India received a significant double boost this week with the ratification of a treaty that was proposed last year and the Indian government’s major enhancement of filming incentives.
An Australian delegation is attending the ongoing International Film Festival of India (Iffi), Goa and the concurrent film market, Film Bazaar. Australian producer Helen Leake is on the Iffi international competition jury and documentary “Brand Bollywood Downunder” by Indian origin Australian filmmaker Anupam Sharma, who also serves as director of the Australia India Film Council, is playing at the festival.
“Screen Australia is delighted that the Australian-Indian treaty is now in force. The treaty provides a framework and opportunity for greater creative collaboration between Australia and India. It will allow producers from both countries to share resources and the risk of financing a film and will provide access to new markets and audiences,” a spokesperson from Screen Australia told Variety.

Filmmaker Siddharth Anand is the toast of India. His “Pathaan” is currently the biggest Indian hit film of the year.
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, the Yash Raj Films spy action thriller ended a box office drought for the Hindi-language Bollywood industry, which had a lean 2022, and marked a comeback for Khan, not seen as a leading man since 2018’s “Zero.”
“There was a lot of curiosity to see Shah Rukh Khan back after his hiatus – he took a break from media, from appearances, he just became inaccessible to the world, there suddenly was a thirst that he created for him – today, audiences are used to stars being out there in social media and events and everywhere,” Anand told Variety.
“He created that enigmatic quality, that mystery around him, which a star should have and then did a film that is in a very popular genre.

The Indian government has approved an audiovisual co-production treaty with Australia, designed to promote joint production of films between the two countries.
While details are currently scarce, producer contributions from the two countries can vary from 20 to 80 of the final total cost of the jointly produced work.
“Australia has emerged as a preferred destination for shooting of Indian films. India is fast emerging as a major content hub for filmmakers looking for new projects. India has abundance of exotic locations, talent pool and relatively cheaper cost of production, making India a favored destination of foreign film-makers,” the Indian government said in a statement.
“The proposed agreement will boost ties with Australia, lead to exchange of art and culture, showcase the soft power of our country and lead to generation of employment among artistic, technical as well as non-technical personnel engaged in audiovisual co-production, including production and post-production work,” the statement added.

Salaam Namaste, this marked the debut of director Siddharth Anand, the filmmakers’ fascination for casting him in urban and uber-cool characters continued. He played Nikhil Arora, who hated being called Nikhil Arora.
He was Nick, as it sounded cool, just like a cucumber and him. He was a chef in Australia who was defined by his laziness and tardiness. The other character was Ambar, who’s called Hambar by her boss, played by the gorgeous Preity Zinta.

Salaam Namaste, starring Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan, released 15 years ago on this day. Director Siddharth Anand says the film was ahead of its time.
"I think 'Salaam Namaste' was dealing with an issue that was taboo or not spoken about, but very much prevalent whether in India or with Indians outside. It felt like it was ahead of its time, but the thing is that there was no deliberate attempt to do something that is scandalous or trying to do something different," Anand said about the quirky comedy, which tells the story of two young NRIs in Melbourne (played by Saif and Preity), who live together, and the girl subsequently gets pregnant. Upon release, many viewers found shades of similarity between the film and the 1995 Hollywood comedy "Nine Months".

If you’re waiting hopefully thinking that the man who gave us films which are noted as some of the most torturous hours one could have spent in a cinema hall (Tara Rum Pum, Anjaana Anjaani, Salaam Namaste and Bachna Ae Haseeno), will deliver something enlightening then you’re just being downright naive. Why on earth does a man of Hrithik Roshan’s stature and talent sign a Siddharth Anand film will remain the biggest mystery of Bang Bang that you never solve.
Bang Bang is directed by Siddharth Anand and remakes one of the most abysmal Hollywood action films of the recent past, Knight and Day. So generally one goes into the cinema hall with next to zero expectations. And lucky you do because otherwise you’re to come out having lost your belief in cinema.

After the disastrous Humshakals, it seems that Saif Ali Khan has now started to play safe as far as his films and onscreen characters are concerned. The film which he has reportedly signed now is called Mr. Chaalu, wherein he plays a manipulative womanizer. While the film is being produced by Excel Entertainment, it is being directed by Reema Kagti. If the reports are to be believed, then, Saif's character in the film is penciled on the lines of what he had earlier played in films like Kal Ho Na Ho, Dil Chahta Hai, and Salaam Namaste. His character is that of a smoothoperator, who, with the help of his impeccable charms, weaves his way into a woman's heart with the promise of marrying her, only to dupe her later. But the entry of the fiery and smarter-than-him Kangna Ranaut in his life changes it forever. The film is supposed...

Fox Star Studios in India gave us what could turn out to be the most ridiculous teaser of 2014 today with the first footage from Siddarth Anand's Bang Bang! The film is an official remake of the Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz film Knight and Day, which is remarkable in that they actually bothered to get remake rights for a film. Headlining Bang Bang are Hrithik Roshan, who has proven his action chops in films like Dhoom 2, and Katrina Kaif, on whom a Barbie doll is based. Director Anand has a couple of solid Bollywood rom-coms under his belt with Bacchna Ae Haseeno and Salaam Namaste, however, his action skills are as yet untested unless you count his "cars turning left" opus, Ta Ra Rum Pum....

Mumbai, Nov 22: Actor Saif Ali Khan, who locked lips with co-stars in "Hum Tum" and "Salaam Namaste", believes Indian movies can do without kissing scenes as it doesn't "suit us".
During a conversation on TV chat show "The Front Row", host Anupama Chopra asked Saif about a statement that he and his now wife Kareena Kapoor gave before marriage - about a commitment that there won't be any kissing onscreen for either of them.
Chopra asked Saif if there are any other rules as actors that the couple has imposed on each other.
He said: "No. I wouldn't even say that's in place. I don't think it's a function of being.

New Delhi, Oct 4: He is loved for his comic timing, but Javed Jaffrey says he can play other roles too except those of horror and sex.
"I am comfortable with any genre except sex and horror. I am more of a comedy, action, romance type of a guy," Javed told Ians in a telephonic interview.
The actor has been seen as a funnyman in films like "Salaam Namaste", "Dhamaal" and "Singh Is Kinng" and is loved for his sense of humour. But this becomes more of a limitation for him.

Could we hope for a Happy Ending to this story at least? So far, Saif and Kareena together on screen before or after marriage have spelt no magic at the box-office. They are coming together again, now in Raj Nidimoru & Krishna Dk's Happy Ending, though Kareena will feature only in a cameo. Confirming this, co-director Raj Nidimoru says Kareena won't appear for a song only. "Saif and Kareena have scenes together. And we're planning to shoot a song as well." While Raj is unwilling to reveal any more details, we understand from sources that Kareena's role has been written into Happy Ending as an afterthought. Says the source, "Saif, who is the film's producer, wanted Kareena to be part of the film when she visited Saif on location in Detroit. As luck would have it, Raj and Krishna knew exactly where to fit Kareena into the plot." Interestingly, Preity Zinta...

Yash Chopra, considered by many to be one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of Bollywood, has been bestowed with the title ‘Father of Contemporary Indian Cinema’ at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Iffm). The late director, who sadly passed away in October 2012, is being given this title due to his strong ties with the Australian region and for the support that he gave to the festival during his lifetime. Yashji’s wife Pamela Chopra will be accepting the award on his behalf and also had this to say in a statement to the media. “Yashji had a close connection with the Iffm. The Bollywood rom-com is progressing somewhat. As a genre, it’s come a long way in recent years, particularly thanks to the Yashraj films from a few years back, the Dharma Productions produced by Karan Johar, and Imtiaz Ali, who co-wrote Cocktail with Sajid Ali, but is a director in his own right (Rockstar, Love Aaj Kal, Jab We Met). This is the third film to come from Saif Ali Khan’s own production banner, Illuminati Films, after the hugely successful Love Aaj Kal and the not-so Agent Vinod. It stars Khan himself, alongside Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty.

Outspoken writer/producer and director Mahesh Bhatt has always been brave and bold. With an enviable record of successful films and a clear formula for delivering hits, Bhatt has often been accused of promoting sex in his movies. However his rescent defence is clear and precise: “(Sex) is what sells,” the director declares, “Why blame me when it is what people want to see (and) they buy tickets to watch my films.”
Earlier Bhatt accused the industry and audiences over hypocrisy when it came to his films (Jism, Murder), in comparison to Yash Raj films (Neal ‘n’ Nikki, Salaam Namaste), which were equal in their sex related content. Bhatt has however equally been celebrated for his presentation of serious films and topics, with classics such as Arth (1982), Saaransh (1984), Naam (1986) and Zakhm (1998), however with the recent release and dismal box office performance of Akshaye Khanna’s corruption-themed Gali Gali Chor Hai,...
