Now you may be wondering, "How did this show save you?!" The answer is that I have not found a sentient robot anime--no, SHOW, in FOREVER. The best I can do is rewatch the original Transformers on Tubi and hope that I can find something.

That's where this anime comes in.

Here I am, scrolling though Tubi, bored out of my mind, when suddenly--out of the blue--COMES THIS.

I love it. I just can't express how much creativity this show has. Gorg's design is amazing, and uh...to be fair when I hopped into this show I only wanted to see the giant robot. The humans are pretty cool too, and the main character (cannot currently think of his name, and I'm too lazy to look it up) is a pretty stand up dude. Animation isn't that bad for when it came out.

In fact, I only have one complaint--I want more Gorg.

In the distant future of 1998, Dr. Tanaka is investigating the mysterious Austral Island, an island in the middle of the ocean a few thousand km south of Samoa which appeared with no explanation. Suddenly the doctor is murdered at the height of his research, thrusting his young son Yuu on a quest to find out the island's secrets and the seemingly evil organization GAIL which has taken over control of the island. Quickly he discovers Gorg, one of many robotic giants that seem to wander the island and attack its inhabitants. Directed by Yoshikazu Yasukiho, more famous for his earlier work on Mobile Suit Gundam, Giant Gorg has a lot of similar mecha-anime tropes, but is also a self-contained series that luckily didn't become a vehicle for selling toys, which I think really worked in favour of its character design and story arcs. I had fun over this entire series, and it surprised me at multiple points, the 80s music is just nostalgic perfection. Not quite a kids show, there's certainly plenty of violence and some very minor nudity, but no gore or anything extreme, If you're looking for a fun old school anime I would definitely recommend. It was certainly a Gorg time.
