When network TV was still relevant...

... and when people were still OK with 22-26 episodes per season with nothing really happening on 15 of those episodes. Cable had been around about 10-15 years in most homes, but the networks still largely ruled the Emmys. Seinfeld won its only Emmy for outstanding Comedy Series. Ted Danson won best actor in a comedy for Cheers' final season. The following year its sequel - if that's what you want to call it - "Frasier" would start a multi-year run of wins in the same category. That is probably why Seinfeld was shut out so many years. Roseanne was still Roseanne Arnold when she won best actress in a comedy. Picket Fences was the surprise that year winning best drama over "Northern Exposure". But come to think of it, Northern Exposure" was more of a comedy than a drama anyways.

You can see HBO starting to be the up and comer with some wins and nominations even back in 1993. But nobody would predict that cable and online and streaming entities that didn't even exist would rule the roost in twenty years. Heck, Jeff Bezos was still cutting his own lawn in 1993.
