A crowd of 2,100 is expected for the artist Jeanne-Claude’s invite-only memorial service on Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But if a new cloud of volcanic ash heads toward Europe, that crowd may be slightly smaller.
“I do think maybe some of the Europeans will have trouble getting here,” said Elizabeth Broun, director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, who will speak at the service. “They would otherwise have shown up in droves.”
Jeanne-Claude, who died Nov. 18 in New York City at age 74 after suffering a brain aneurysm, was known for monumental works of public art created with her husband Christo. In 2005, they transformed Central Park with “The Gates,” a series of 7,503 orange nylon panels erected for 16 days. In 1995, they wrapped the Reichstag, the seat of the German Parliament in Berlin, in silvery fabric.

The memory of one-half of one of the most innovative and unusual artist duos of all time will live on through HBO.
The premium cable network is scheduled to re-air "The Gates," a detailing of the most recent work by married environmental artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. In honor of Jeanne-Claude's November 18 death from a brain aneurysm at the age of 74, HBO will give an encore presentation of the documentary, which originally aired in February 2008.
The documentary chronicles the work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude in their 2005 creation of the artwork "The Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979-2005." Initially proposing the idea 30 years ago, the duo was given the go-ahead in 2005 by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to create a public piece of art within Central Park. "The Gates" consisted of the construction of 7,503 saffron-colored gates and panels of nylon fabric running throughout the park. Financing for the project came from the artists themselves,...

Note: A longer version of this interview was originally published during the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival, where The Gates had its world premiere. In honor of Jeanne-Claude, who passed away today, we are re-running the interview. Rip, Jeanne-Claude. Tribeca Film: How did you did you decide to document the making of your work? And why is it so important for your work to be documented? Jeanne-Claude: All of our major projects have a film. The Maysles have done six of them. The Gates film is really in two parts. There are the early years 1979-81, and then the project was refused in 1981. But those early years were filmed by both brothers, David and Albert Maysles. The second part is filmed by Antonio Ferrera and Albert Maysles. [David Maysles passed away in 1987.] Christo: The story with Al and David is very personal. We met them so many years ago in 1961. We ...

ABC's "Lost," AMC's "Breaking Bad," Nickelodeon's "Avatar" and -- in a nod to the influence of the Web -- YouTube are among the winners of 2008 Peabody Awards unveiled Wednesday.
Others among the 36 television and radio programs or media institutions that garnered accolades for their excellence were NPR's radio reports from China on the earthquake in Chengdu, the Metropolitan Opera's performances in high-definition, CNN's presidential primary and debates coverage and "Saturday Night Live's" political satire.
For the first time, several Web-related entities received nods, including the New York Times' Web site and the Onion's news network as well as the recognition to YouTube for its impact on the media landscape. The latter was lauded for being "an ever-expanding archive-cum-bulletin board that both embodies and promotes democracy."

Richard Lorber has formed a new distribution company Alive Mind to release documentary programming in "the areas of enlightened consciousness and cultural transformation." Alive Mind is a specialty distribution arm of his new company, Lorber HT Digital. Its newest acquisition is The Gates acquired for North America. Current releases include the documentary film the musical Hair, Hair: Let The Sun Shine In, director Jessica Yu's Protagonist, and FLicKeR about Brion Gysin, visionary artist and beat generation inventor of the "Dreamachine". Created out of the realization that many fine non-fiction works were “failing to connect not only with general audiences but also even with specialized audiences whose interests were aligned with the focus of the filmmaker” the company generally works on a revenue sharing basis with their filmmakers and aspires to make them marketing partners in an effort to reach the largest specialized audience and the most passionate segments of the general audience."...

New York -- Alive Mind has acquired the rights to "The Gates," Antonio Ferrera and Albert Maysles' documentary about the colorful art that graced New York's Central Park in 2006.
Alive Mind, founded by Richard Lorber about a year ago, will be released in New York theatrically in the spring and then available to educational institutions as well as other runs theatrically. Lorber said Tuesday afternoon that "Gates" would be released in a "prestigious venue" in New York but couldn't announce it right away.
The film documents the Gates, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's dressing of Central Park, from its inception to its $21 million execution that became a tourist attraction seen by an estimated 4 million people. What's remarkable about "Gates" is that Albert Maysles and his brother, David Maysles, began filming it in 1979 when the artists first pitched the idea to New York officials. David Maysles died in 1987, long before The Gates came to fruition.
