Sprawa sie rypla

To me, "Sprawa sie rypla" (The matter went to hell) is one of the best Polish comedies. The plot centers around the rural family of Ludwik Placek (Francisze Pieczka), whose mother dies shortly before reaching the age of 100. The Placek family wants to receive gifts from local authorities related to the birthday of its late grandmother and decides to hide her death. So the family decides to dress up old uncle Jontek as their dead grandmother. All this commotion arouses curiosity and envy of their neighbors. " The matter went to hell" may not be for all tastes, but I found it outrageously funny and with some memorable scenes. The film's director, Janusz Kidawa, was good at showing crude, folk humor. The film also uses non-professional actors which gives the story and background more authenticity. And the memorable Franciszek Pieczka is simply great. I grew up in the village in eastern Poland, so for me, " The matter went to hell" was a sentimental journey to the past and a great occasion to look at changing customs, mentality, and economic conditions. Even if the economy is changing fast, some of our traditions go back as far as the age of feudalism, and there are some people today who take kings, queens, and some outdated ideas and customs seriously. I think that we should watch more comedies and look at our traditions with more distance and humor.
