This is one of the best films I have seen recently.

This film proves that a very good film can be made out of a mediocre novel. I went to the cinema forced by my girlfriend and came out of it thoroughly impressed and touched. The film divided the male and female audiences in Turkey, and I am happy to say I am not one of the Turkish males who felt "slapped" by this movie. Having said this, if your idea of life is soccer and drinking booze, this is not a film for you. For the other lesser beings such as myself, I would like to add that this is one of those rare films we see in the world today that will change one's life. It is also a revolutionary film for the Turkish cinema, finally an intelligent and sensitive departure from the stupid slap sticks of the recent years toward bone dry reality about everyday Turkish life. I strongly recommend it.

    Big disappointment

This Book-based movie is truly awful, and a big disappointment. We've been waiting for this move over a month. Many film reviewer were hopeful for it. Also in newspapers and TV, it made big sense. When 29th April comes, many people regretfully noticed that movie is really awful. Why? First of all story was so monotone. It has been many indefinite scenes, sometimes it's hard to realize what's going on. The actresses, out of Hulya Avsar, weren't harmonized with their roles, especially Vildan Atasever. She acts better in comedy films, In this movie, a kind of drama, she couldn't disposed of her previous role. And finally Movie is too short, just 66 minutes.

    Very good

This film was just shown in the London film festival and I must say what an excellent piece of cinematographic art it is. It is not just a nice story but it brilliantly portrays the female role as perceived in the supposedly modern Turkish society. Although the finale is nothing like something out of a fairy tale with a perfect ending, it definitely makes a mark and proves its point: the emancipation of women and how stereotypes, stigmas and even physical and psychological pressure and abuse cannot repress inner strength and joie de vivre as one could say.

I thought the movie was brilliantly interpreted and the comic references were certainly well put forward by both the director and the actresses. Well done.

Best Turkish Film of Recent Years

Wow. I am sure this is not the kind of festival film Western festival programmers will want to show from Turkey. It is not a human rights concern, doesn't talk about torture in Turkish prisons, not about the war. Not that these subject matters are not important, but for too long Turksih filmmakers banked on these issues, which were real, but nevertheless the films sucked, to say the least. And yet these badly made films flashing and exploiting good causes have long been the darlings of European film festivals. 2 Genc Kiz (2 Young Girls, I assume the English title is) feels and is REAL. You may find my reaction over the top, but for someone who loves movies and has to see again and again, simply bad films in Turkey, finally a breath of fresh air. Kutlug Ataman is arguably the best film director of Turkey today. What is really refreshing about him and his films is that he seems to make his films for the Turkish public in mind and not foreign film festivals. Having said that this film should interest any audiences around the world. A real and huge step forward for cinema. Sorry guys, you may say you have not liked the film but the two times that I went to see the film in Ankara I have seen some of you trying to hide you tears. Good for you! Time to grow up.

    Loved it

I watched this film without having read the book it was supposedly based on. The film centers on two teenage girls- Handan (played by Vildan Atasever) and Behiye (Feride Cetin). Handan is the easy-going popular girl with a relatively liberal upbringing. She lives with her single mother Leman (played by veteran actress Hulya Avsar) and rumor has it that her father is somewhere in Australia. Strongwilled Behiye (played by Feride Cetin) comes from a more middle-class background and wants to break free. She has bright red hair and a tomboyish personality.

The acting in the film is uniformly excellent. Vildan Atasever, Feride Cetin and Hulya Avsar all deliver strong multi-layered performances. The script is smart, being funny and touching at the same time. Another outstanding aspect was the soundtrack by Turkish rock band Replikas.
