solid flic - tough finding an audience

Kate's new job may not be the most exciting or suspense filled film (infact I wouldn't even call it a horror movie) but for the viewer that takes the time to really watch the story unfold, the result is worth it. The performances are stellar and the directing crisp and focused. Since this is a dialogue driven movie it would've been easy to shoot the typical master and cut back and fourth between static over the shoulder shots. Instead, Larouche opts to use a variety of movement shots which adds a very stylistic edge to the film. (The great dolly that opens the film, the subtle camera movement during Kate's and Carl's dialogue scene). The editing is also tight.

The theme of the film is also interesting in the comments it makes on the modern day work place (draw from it what you will).

All in all Kate's New Job is a very well done short flic with excellent production value that may have trouble finding an audience.

Kate's New Job: Interesting twist on vampire myth

Pierre Larouche's Kate's New Job was definitely one of the best among the new low budget horror films presented at the last Fantasia Festival in Montreal. Larouche proves to be very inventive as a writer/director, taking a well known (and overused) horror movie theme and using it as a critique of a days work in an office building. Think of it as Dilbert meets Dracula. With hardly any budget the director demonstrates a certain talent for atmosphere, making the office Kate works in seem very stifling and managing to pull off a couple of OK scares without the use of special effects. The actors are pretty good (actually way above average for this sort of low budget movie), especially Hannah Dorozio, very believable in the title role, and Robert Harrop who practically steals the show as the weirdo janitor who knows more than he should about the stuff going on at Feedback Communication... A fun short film from beginning to end.
