Eric Balfour and Donald Faison in Skyline (2010)
‘Skyline’ Film Review
Eric Balfour and Donald Faison in Skyline (2010)
Film: ‘Skyline’; Directors: Colin Strause, Greg Strause; Actors: Eric Balfour, Scottie Thompson, Birttany Daniel, Crystal Reed; Rating: **

Alien abduction movies have been done to death. What do you do if you have to make another? Obviously, you pick the best of every movie on aliens there ever has been and hope it works. Sadly, despite its best intentions, ‘Skyline’ does not.

After blue lights descend on the city of Los Angeles attracting people to it and sucking them to its source, the survival of mankind is at stake. Trying their best to survive in this melee are Jarrod (Eric Balfour), his pregnant girlfriend Elaine (Scottie Thompson) and a few of his friends.

‘Skyline’.

Top 10 mindf*** TV episodes
Fare such as Smallville's 'Labyrinth' episode and pretty much anything in either the UK or Us version of Life On Mars - even 'Life Is A Rock', the outrageous 'space finale' of ABC's 2008 remake of the original UK BBC series - is not admissable here. We knew that Smallville would continue after Labyrinth's attempts to persuade Clark that his Kryptonian heritage was invented, and since we knew ABC's Life On Mars was heading for the trash anyway, the final episode had no parameters left to respect. Also excluded are episodes of anthologies such as The Twilight Zone, which set out on a weekly basis to mess with our minds. And sorry, Lost definitely also falls into that category.

Here, instead, are the season episodes which 'got us' fair and square without committing canonical suicide...

This is chock-full of spoilers, so be warned...

Who will win: Piranha 3D or Mega Piranha?
Something fishy is going on in the world of cinema.

This weekend's much-touted release of Atmosphere's creature pic Piranha 3D, directed by Alexandre Aja, enters the arena on the heels of Syfy's recent fish-themed horror romp Mega Piranha, directed by Eric Forsberg.

And who's keeping score? Well, given the warm reception that Mega Piranha got at Comic-Con and the fact that it was Syfy's No1 watched movie premiere of 2010, probably a lot of people.

We all know about Piranha 3D, a $25million special effects extravaganza helmed by Alexandre Aja (Mirrors, The Hills Have Eyes), produced by Atmosphere Entertainment (The Spiderwick Chronicles, 300), and starring Kelly Brook, Richard Dreyfus, Elizabeth Shue and Ving Rhames.

The appeal of the film (beach babes, bouncing boobs and a girl-on-girl underwater kissing scene between Brook and porn star Riley Steele) was explained on our Lads Lounge blog.

But we don't know quite as much about Mega Piranha,...

Press Release Hypes the Great Piranha 3D vs. Mega Piranha Showdown
The Asylum originally planned the release of their audacious Mega Piranha as something of a mockbuster designed to coincide with the then planned theatrical release of Piranha 3D. When Piranha 3D got pushed back to this weekend, I joked that maybe this time The Asylum can claim that the theatrical movie is mockbustering them. According to the odd press release that showed up in my box today, they've taken my jest to heart.

Mega Piranha director Eric Forsberg has thrown down the gauntlet of sorts by sending out this press release asking which over-the-top piranha flick will reign supreme in the hearts and minds of movie watchers. Read for yourself.

Piranha 3D vs. the Syfy original movie Mega Piranha!

“Who will devour who?”

Michael Bay Producing New Alien Abduction Film
It seems that mega-producer and director Michael Bay can’t get enough of aliens, as he’s added yet another alien-related project to his slate.

As Heat Vision reports, the project doesn’t have an official title but is being referred to as the “Confidential Alien Project.” It’s based on an original pitch by former production assistant and newcomer writer, Bobby Glickert.

Although it’s looking like a more experienced writer will handle the actual script (Paramount is currently looking for writers), Glickert went so far as to cut together a two-minute teaser, which attracted and impressed Bay’s company, Platinum Dunes.

As you can probably tell from the name, the specific plot of this “Confidential Alien Project” is being kept secret for the time being, but it is said to involve alien abductions. Bay will produce the project along…

Exclusive: Director Eric Forsberg Talks Mega Piranha and More!
I first interviewed Eric Forsberg back in August of 2006 in anticipation of the release of Snakes on a Train. Now here we are in April of 2010, and I am interviewing him again in anticipation of Mega Piranha, another killer animal mockbuster he's made for The Asylum.

I'm feeling a sense of déjà vu. With Mega Piranha debuting on Syfy April 10th and then hitting DVD shelves on April 27th, now seemed like a good time for a lighthearted return engagement with Mr. Forsberg discussing the majesty of Mega Piranha, what it's like working for the mockbuster masters at The Asylum, and his past, present, and future projects.

Foy: When we first spoke back in 2006, it was in anticipation of the release of Snakes on a Train. Now here we are in 2010 speaking in anticipation of the release of Mega Piranha. Is there no escaping the Asylum?

Eric: No, there isn’t,...

Real-life Paranormal Activity in The Fourth Kind: Fact or Fiction?
It has everything a scary movie should have: a small-town citizenry possessed by outside forces, aliens on the prowl and realistic-looking old film footage to vouch for its authenticity. But is The Fourth Kind everything it claims to be? In the new movie, which opened last weekend, Milla Jovovich plays a psychologist named Dr. Abigail Taylor who investigates a series of disappearances in Nome, Alaska. Marketed as a fact-based thriller, The Fourth Kind uses a documentary-reenactment approach to explore a series of unsolved disappearances in the Alaska town. One possible explanation? Alien abduction. But just what is fact and what is fiction?...

Us Box Office Visited By Three Ghosts...
Tom Hanks, Daryl Sabara, and Josh Hutcherson in Le Pôle Express (2004)
It came as a surprise to very few people when A Christmas Carol topped the Us box office this weekend, since studio chiefs and analysts were all visited by ghosts pretty much guaranteeing it. That it took $31 million in the process, however, was something of a disappointment, despite doing better than The Polar Express, director Robert Zemeckis' last attempt at a Christmas classic.A whopping 74% of that total, however, came from 3D screenings, reaffirming the box office power of the third dimension, and if Carol does manage to follow The Polar Express' model and keep packing them in until January, it could end up doing extremely well despite the relatively slow start. It was still some distance ahead of the competition, however: Michael Jackson's This Is It fell to second with $14m, while new release The Men Who Stare At Goats took $13.3m, which is better than Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,...

Milla Jovovich delves into The Fourth Kind
We’ve been somewhat remiss until now in mentioning and intriguing new movie - featuring everyone’s favourite Zombo slayer Milla Jovovich - The Fourth Kind, directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. It’s a weakness but we’ve always been a sucker for an Alien abduction/conspiracy theory storylin, and this looks just the ticket. Here’s the skinny on the plot…..Synopsis: 1n 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document...until now. Structured unlike any film before it, The Fourth Kind is set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where -mysteriously since the 1960s...

The Vampire Convention!
Hey, if plumbers and dentists can have conventions, why not vampires?

On Sunday, Augist 16th, Hollywood appeared to be invaded by the combined residents of Sunnydale, Santa Cruz and 'Salem's Lot, as bloodsuckers gathered at the Music Box Theater for the first ever Vampire Convention and came back that night for Vampirella's Ball.

It was an appropriate date, as it marked the 53rd anniversary of the death of Dracula himself, Bela Lugosi--the inspiration for Bauhaus' biggest hit. Because of the Hollywood setting, attendees could literally walk down the Boulevard and pay respect at Bela Lugosi's star (Many did.).

There was a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Vampirella, as well as round-table discussions on 'Vampires And Sexuality', and 'Why we love vampires.'

Well-dressed theatergoers on intermission from the "Legally Blonde" at The Pantages Theater did double takes as hordes of fanged, pale Goths slouched silently past them,...

Pics and Trailer from the Alien Abduction Thriller 'The Fourth Kind'
Milla Jovovich in The Fourth Kind

Photo: Universal Pictures Universal has sent over the trailer and a pair of images from their upcoming sci-fi thriller The Fourth Kind as it comes out of nowhere, which could mean one of two things: 1) They are trying to take advantage of a rise in perceived audience interest in sci-fi, or 2) it's actually pretty good. When the trailer debuted as an exclusive elsewhere at the end of last week people got pretty jazzed about it, so let's hope it's the latter of the two reasons. The film is set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year and psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. Will Patton and Elias Koteas co-star in the film directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi.

Creepy Trailer for Alien Abduction Thriller The Fourth Kind

Contact with extraterrestrials, is an encounter of the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document... Until now. Universal has debuted the official trailer for the sci-fi thriller The Fourth Kind starring Milla Jovovich on Hulu (you can also watch it on SciFi Wire if you're not in the Us). I will only say that this looks very creepy. It just came out of nowhere, I didn't even know this movie existed until today, but damn, does it look crazy! Watch the official trailer for The Fourth Kind: A thriller involving an unsolved mystery in Alaska, where one town has seen an extraordinary number of unexplained disappearances during the past 40 years...

Torchwood: Children Of Earth - Day One Review
What an episode! The popular Doctor Who spin off Torchwood made it’s triumphant return this evening on BBC One, and despite the fact it was a one hour episode it had the air of a major Hollywood picture around it.

An ordinary day becomes a world of terror as every single child in the world stops. A message is sent to all the governments of Earth: ‘We are coming’. But as a trap closes around Captain Jack, sins of the past are returning, as long-forgotten events from 1965 threaten to reveal an awful truth.

That was the synopsis to the first episode in the Torchwood five-part miniseries, which has just aired on BBC One, and it barely manages to express the sheer size of production that this new series of the popular sci-fi drama promises.

Government conspiracies, Alien Abduction and painful past memories all made up the 60 minute episode, which...

Alien Abduction in Tatopoulos' 'Nonstop'

[DVD Review] Alien Raiders
With the sci-fi genre really digging deep these days for cheap thrills and gore fest styles instead of interesting stories with decent quality, it's hard to find something worthwhile to put your money into. Considering most sci-fi flicks are so mediocre they end up on the sci-fi channel, you'd be hard pressed to say that the genre itself isn't in the crapper. The average sci-fi flick gives us aliens, mystical creatures or a giant ass snake coming to tear the world apart and only 5 soldiers, 1 reporter and an unlucky camera man standing in their way. I just gave you a premise to about 80% of the crappy sci-fi films of today. Example, Alien Abduction and Manticore. Boosh...

In the light of that, we have a new look at aliens and heroes in a somewhat typical setting in Alien Raiders. The question you must ask is "can it be pulled off?" I'm...
