Swirl

The limitations of David Stanley as screenwriter and especially director are on view in this minor Vivid Video release of yesteryear. I was drawn intermittently into the suspense, but appalled at the slap-dash nature of many key scenes.

It's a Kira Kener vehicle, but she is miscast as a 20-year-old college cheerleader, who seems to be living in a fantasy world of her own, while fellow cheerleaders give her a rough time. Opening teaser scene sets up the subsequent story told in flashback, as we see parents visiting a tormented daughter in a padded cell, but don't see the girl's face.

I liked the "is she or isn't she?" nature of Stanley's story as we see Kener fantasize a sex scene with her dreamboat guy TJ Cummings, all in her head. Cummings also gets to hump the mean girl cheerleader Bailey, extremely well-played by April, who steals the movie handily from Vivid contract star Kener.

Flashback builds to a key confrontation scene where, to use the cliche, all is revealed, but Stanley bungles it completely. It is staged in a bare room with a couple of lightbulbs hanging, almost as if we're watching a rehearsal rather than a scene ready to be shot, typical of the one-day wonder approach Stanley and Vivid used to crank out these star vehicles back in the day. The characters' behavior in this scene doesn't make sense, and generally one concludes that our auteur was merely in a hurry to wrap up his movie once he had all the XXX footage in the can.

Rubee Tuesday and Frank Bukkwyd are fine as the parents and even get screen credits for a change, while Stanley cannot resist fooling around by including right after the end credits a comical montage of himself and other crew members like Robby D. and Shylar Cobi taking turns acting out Kener's role in a dinner table scene with Rubee and Frank. Just another dab of self-indulgence by one of porn's most self-indulgent practitioners.
