French writer-director Jacques Audiard has proven himself a genre-spanning talent. He’s helmed such diverse features as 1994’s thriller See How They Fall, 2009’s Academy Award-nominated gangster film A Prophet, 2012’s devastating romance Rust and Bone, and 2015’s Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or-winning portrait of refugees escaping war, Dheepan. His work is united by the fierce pursuit of his singular visions. For his latest project, Emilia Pérez, Audiard set out to combine elements of musicals, film noir, and crime dramas, and he recruited a troupe of gifted performers and artisans all committed to realizing his ambitious tale of a woman on a quest to live as her truest self. The result is a provocative fever dream, a feat of cinematic fearlessness.

Karla Sofía Gascón has become the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an Academy Award. The Spanish star is recognized for her performance in the titular role of Jacques Audiard’s musical crime film “Emilia Pérez.”
The Netflix film follows Emilia (Gascón), a feared drug lord who seeks the help of a lawyer, Rita (Zoe Saldaña), to fake her death and undergo gender-affirming surgery. Variety‘s chief film critic Peter Debruge praised the Spanish-language film in his review, writing that Gascón “electrifies” in her role.
This isn’t Gascón’s first history-making nod this awards season: She became the first transgender woman to win the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and was the first trans woman nominated for film acting at the Golden Globes.
Only three openly trans people have been nominated in any categories at the Oscars before: composer Angela Morley, musician Anohni and documentarian Yance Ford.

When Mexican pop group Rbd wrapped its historic reunion tour last year, Dulce María had two priorities: recovering her “mental stability” after 54 back-to-back stadium shows and writing and recording solo music again. On Thursday, the pop star announced that she’s finally back, releasing “Ojalá,” a collaboration with Spanish singer Beret, next week.
“It has been such a light to return to my solo career,” she tells Rolling Stone. “So many of my fans thought I wasn’t going to come back, but sharing this music news makes me so excited.

Karla Sofía Gascón, who delivered a breakthrough performance as a ruthless narco gangster transitioning in Jacques Audiard’s crime musical “Emilia Pérez,” has revealed how she fought to get the part.
“At the beginning, (Audiard) did not consider me for the role (of Juan “Manitas” Del Monte), he only wanted me to play the female role after the transition,” the Spanish actress said during a masterclass at the Biarritz’ Nouvelles Vagues Festival, speaking in a packed theater. “It took me a long time to convince him that I could do both, and thanks to… I don’t know what, thanks to this universe, I ended up convincing him.”
Gascón’s performance in the film would earn her the best acting prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

The celebrated Mexican pop group Rbd said they would have to put all projects “on hold,” including a possible continuation of their successful 2023 reunion tour, amid an ongoing financial dispute with their former manager.
On Wednesday, May 22, Rbd and their lawyers released a statement disputing recent claims by T6H Entertainment and its CEO, Guillermo Rosas, that there was no financial mismanagement related to last year’s “Soy Rebelde” tour. Rbd’s lawyers countered that a “forensic accounting investigation… revealed significant irregularities,” alleging that nearly $1 million remained unaccounted for.

For a small island, Puerto Rico has an outsized musical footprint. From salsa to hip-hop to reggaeton, for decades the Caribbean nation and the diaspora have contributed to birthing genres that have gone on to sweep the globe. With that international success has also come certain formulas for repeating it. On his debut EP, "Road 2 Neverland," Pink Pablo eschews all of them in favor of a sound that breaks from the confines of the established mainstream. Instead, it favors something a little freer. And over the course of six tracks, he finds it.
The introductory track, "Neverland," opens with blaring synths before morphing into a futuristic, funky disco beat that underscores Pablo's light harmonizing. The beat changes up again whenever his rapping takes over, this time going rock with heavy cymbals and kick drums accentuating the artist's more exaggerated delivery. It's a fun track that raises the energy level right...

After 15 long years, Rbd are officially back! The beloved Mexican pop group - which was born out of the 2005 telenovela "Rebelde" and includes Anahí, Christian Chávez, Dulce María, Maite Perroni, and Christopher von Uckermann - reunited earlier this year for one final tour, the Soy Rebelde Tour. On Sunday, they descended upon San Francisco's Chase Center, where they were met by thousands of fans dressed in miniskirts, white button-ups, red blazers, and knee-high boots.
Although it's been years since Rbd's last performance (and Alfonso Herrera is notably sitting out the tour), it was almost like no time had passed as the band transported the crowd back to Elite Way School with an emotional two-hour set of their greatest hits. "Thank you for not forgetting us. Thank you for making dreams come true tonight," Anahí passionately shouted to the audience in Spanish. "Thank you for keeping us in your hearts all these years,...

The streets surrounding the Angel of Independence in Mexico City filled with smiling faces on a warm night in mid-August. People waved flags, crowds chanted and clapped, and cars honked their horns. If this were any other night, you might assume a major soccer team had just earned a championship trophy and brought it out to the fans. But a very different win was being celebrated that night — and by a completely different group of people.

Telenovela actresses have become superstars and pop culture icons due to the immense popularity of telenovelas around the globe. Many telenovela actresses have shed the cheesy image of the genre and delivered legitimate performances, elevating the medium. Telenovela actresses often define their careers, and their years in daytime TV come to define them as they often perform in numerous series.
Telenovelas are known for their bold storylines and over-the-top dramatics, and some of the best telenovela actresses have become bona fide superstars. Not unlike their English-language counterpart the soap opera, telenovelas are immensely popular daily television shows that tell dramatic stories of love, lust, and intrigue. With influence around the globe, the telenovela has grown into incorporating other genres as its popularity expanded, and many of the best examples incorporate comedy, suspense, and even the supernatural on occasion. Like soap opera stars in the United States, telenovela actors often become pop culture icons,...

Christian Chávez has always been one of the most colorful members of Rbd. Throughout his original tenure in the Mexican pop group in the early 2000s, he sported practically all the colors of the rainbow in his hair, and he later came out as gay shortly before the group split in 2009. Now, Chávez is excited to be reuniting with his bandmates for an Rbd world tour, which kicks off in the US this summer.
"It's super special for me to have the opportunity to be with Rbd again with this freedom now," he tells Popsugar. "Now I have the opportunity to be myself. Now I have the opportunity to be on stage and I can be my queer self."

The novel, which has been a recent bestseller in Spanish speaking countries, was published in Italy in June.

Aidan Euan’s not entirely sure if it reads on camera — spoiler: it does — that, when dressing Alexa Demie as Maddy Perez on “Euphoria,” he gave her a modern-but-nostalgic Mexican American stamp from the homes of his youth, the first being in Yucatán and the second in SoCal.

TelevisaUnivision has announced Vix as its flagship streaming brand, with both subscription and free, ad-supported versions of it due to launch in the coming months.
The company unveiled the name this morning at the start of a virtual investor presentation.
Vix has been in the Univision fold since the company acquired it last February. At the time of that deal, the plan was to have it power domestic streaming outlet PrendeTV. As 2021 unfolded, Univision then set a merger with Grupo Televisa’s media arm. The latter merger closed in January.
The AVOD tier of Vix will launch March 31, with the subscription Vix+ making its debut in the second half of 2022. It will feature 40,000 hours of on-demand programming and 100 linear channels, including a new 24-7 sports offering, Zona Tudn.
Vix+ will have more than 50 original titles in the first year and a number of significant deals, including one with Salma Hayek.

Magma Cine, a pioneering company on the pan-Latin American co-production scene, and top Mexican post-production house Chemistry have sealed a strategic alliance to produce high-quality contents.
Unveiled at Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur, the partnership aims to respond to the strong appetite of regional Ott services as well as pan-regional studios, and forms part of an emerging initiative led by ambitious companies from markets such as Mexico, Argentina and Colombia, looking for new alliances to adapt to market demand.
While in Mexico the Ott platforms and studios such as Turner Latin America boom have generated a strong demand for content, in Argentina OTTs are not as integrated, in terms of project requests, so it leaves well-known screenwriters working at under-capacity.
Argentine TV fiction has always been well received in the Mexican market, as demonstrated by examples such as telenovela “Rebelde” and “El Recluso,” a remake of TV series “El marginal.”

So what exactly is Cinco de Mayo? According to Wikipedia:
"Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican civic holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. In the United States Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond that in Mexico. The date is perhaps best recognized in the United States as a date to celebrate the culture and experiences of Americans of Mexican ancestry, much as St. Patrick's Day, Oktoberfest, and the Chinese New Year are used to celebrate those of Irish, German, and Chinese ancestry respectively. Similar to those holidays, Cinco de Mayo is observed by many Americans regardless of ethnic origin."
When we realized Cinco de Mayo was coming up, we knew we had to pay tribute to all the wonders of Mexico, and after some research,...

MEXICO CITY -- Media group Televisa and EMI Music have formed a joint-venture company in Mexico and a partnership in the U.S., allowing Televisa to expand its presence in Latin America and re-enter the recorded music business in the U.S. market. The 50/50 alliance in Mexico, called Televisa EMI Music, will launch Sept. 1. The new company, announced Tuesday, will focus on the development and marketing of musical talent from Televisa's popular telenovelas, including teen pop groups from such programs as Complices al Rescate and Rebelde. The U.S. partnership, called EMI Televisa Music, gives Televisa a distribution network to expand in the fast-growing U.S. Hispanic market, a market valued at more than $903 million in 2004, according to recording industry organization IFPI. In contrast, Mexico's music market was valued at $360 million last year.
