Karla Sofía Gascón has become the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an Academy Award. The Spanish star is recognized for her performance in the titular role of Jacques Audiard’s musical crime film “Emilia Pérez.”

The Netflix film follows Emilia (Gascón), a feared drug lord who seeks the help of a lawyer, Rita (Zoe Saldaña), to fake her death and undergo gender-affirming surgery. Variety‘s chief film critic Peter Debruge praised the Spanish-language film in his review, writing that Gascón “electrifies” in her role.

This isn’t Gascón’s first history-making nod this awards season: She became the first transgender woman to win the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and was the first trans woman nominated for film acting at the Golden Globes.

Only three openly trans people have been nominated in any categories at the Oscars before: composer Angela Morley, musician Anohni and documentarian Yance Ford.

“At the beginning, (Audiard) did not consider me for the role (of Juan “Manitas” Del Monte), he only wanted me to play the female role after the transition,” the Spanish actress said during a masterclass at the Biarritz’ Nouvelles Vagues Festival, speaking in a packed theater. “It took me a long time to convince him that I could do both, and thanks to… I don’t know what, thanks to this universe, I ended up convincing him.”

The celebrated Mexican pop group Rbd said they would have to put all projects “on hold,” including a possible continuation of their successful 2023 reunion tour, amid an ongoing financial dispute with their former manager.

On Wednesday, May 22, Rbd and their lawyers released a statement disputing recent claims by T6H Entertainment and its CEO, Guillermo Rosas, that there was no financial mismanagement related to last year’s “Soy Rebelde” tour. Dubbed Anónima Media, it’s founded by entrepreneur-journalist-producer Bárbara Arredondo Ayala, actor-producer Eréndira Ibarra and scriptwriter-producer Natasha Ybarra-Klor with the mission to create content for and by women of Latin America and Spain.

After expanding into Spain, Italy’s ITV-owned Cattleya, the company behind “Gomorrah” and “ZeroZeroZero,” has acquired rights to Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s bestselling spy thriller “El Italiano,” which it plans to adapt into a high-end miniseries.

Inspired by real events, “El Italiano” is a tale combining romance and espionage set at the height of World War II in the Bay of Algeciras, Spain, from where Italian frogmen using explosives wreaked havoc among the Allied forces by sinking several freighters.

The novel, which has been a recent bestseller in Spanish speaking countries, was published in Italy in June.

Never Look Back is a modern retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Now set in the Bronx with a multicultural cast and bumping soundtrack filled with bachata, reggaeton, salsa, and hip-hop, the film is a blend of genres: fantasy, horror, and romance.

TelevisaUnivision has announced Vix as its flagship streaming brand, with both subscription and free, ad-supported versions of it due to launch in the coming months.

The company unveiled the name this morning at the start of a virtual investor presentation.

Vix has been in the Univision fold since the company acquired it last February. At the time of that deal, the plan was to have it power domestic streaming outlet PrendeTV. As 2021 unfolded, Univision then set a merger with Grupo Televisa’s media arm. The latter merger closed in January.

The AVOD tier of Vix will launch March 31, with the subscription Vix+ making its debut in the second half of 2022. It will feature 40,000 hours of on-demand programming and 100 linear channels, including a new 24-7 sports offering, Zona Tudn.

Vix+ will have more than 50 original titles in the first year and a number of significant deals, including one with Salma Hayek.

Alfonso Herrera, star of Fox’s recently cancelled The Exorcist, will recur on Season 3 of USA Network’s narco-drama Queen of the South, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Congratulations are in order for Diego Boneta!

The 21-year-old Mexican actor will receive CinemaCon’s Rising Star of 2012 Award at the upcoming convention of theater owners in Las Vegas, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Boneta, who is best known for his roles on hit teen shows like ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” and the CW’s “90210”, got his start in Spanish-language television, playing the role of Rocco in the hit Mexican telenovela, “Rebelde.”

Up next, the talented actor-singer can be seen playing the lead role of aspiring rocker Drew Boley in “Hairspray” director Adam Shankman’s star-studded movie musical “Rock of Ages” (in theaters June 15th).

"How exciting to think that Diego Boneta's first film role will see him share the screen with the likes of Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin," CinemaCon general managing director Mitch Neuhauser said of announcing the award, which will be presented at the final night gala dinner.

So what exactly is Cinco de Mayo? According to Wikipedia:

Diego Boneta has gone from living it up on "90210" to guesting on "Pretty Little Liars," and now the Mexican actor and former star of the telenovela "Rebelde" has landed the much coveted male lead in the big-screen adaptation of "Rock of Ages."

"To be authentic, I like to cast as close to the real age as possible and wanted someone who has all the innocence and guilelessness of Drew," the movie's director, Adam Shankman, told The Hollywood Reporter. MEXICO CITY -- Media group Televisa and EMI Music have formed a joint-venture company in Mexico and a partnership in the U.S., allowing Televisa to expand its presence in Latin America and re-enter the recorded music business in the U.S. market. The 50/50 alliance in Mexico, called Televisa EMI Music, will launch Sept. 1. The new company, announced Tuesday, will focus on the development and marketing of musical talent from Televisa's popular telenovelas, including teen pop groups from such programs as Complices al Rescate and Rebelde. The U.S. partnership, called EMI Televisa Music, gives Televisa a distribution network to expand in the fast-growing U.S. Hispanic market, a market valued at more than $903 million in 2004, according to recording industry organization IFPI. In contrast, Mexico's music market was valued at $360 million last year.
