Ahead of her 40th birthday next week, we look back over the 25-year big-screen career of the Oscar-nominated actor, from Atonement to Love Actually, Pride & Prejudice to Star Wars
Knightley’s first big role was in this teen thriller, about four private school kids partying in a bomb shelter, where it all goes predictably haywire. It’s a horror, and not just for the sheer dominance of low-rise bootcut jeans. Even in its more hysterical moments, Knightley brings nuance to the posh-girl stereotype.

Twenty years after its theatrical release, Joe Wright’s luminous Jane Austen adaptation “Pride & Prejudice” continues to delight fans — we’re talking hand flex freaks, “a million times yes” devotees, and anyone who loves a romantic reunion in a dawn-lit field — and is preparing for a very well-received theatrical re-release next month.
That’s good news for fans, but perhaps even better news for some of its many wonderful cast members, including three-time Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan, who made her film debut in the feature as the delightfully ditzy fourth Bennet daughter Catherine (better known as Kitty).
During a recent interview with Mulligan in support of her latest role in the charming “The Ballad of Wallis Island”, I mentioned that a recent article sharing the news of the upcoming re-release of the film for its 20th anniversary was met with huge interest from our readers.
“What?,” a delighted Mulligan responded.

Seis nuevos episodios se estrenan este abril. © Netflix
El reparto de esta nueva temporada está formado por Michele Austin (Hard Truths), Ben Bailey Smith (David Brent: Life on the Road), Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing), Josh Finan (Say Nothing), James Nelson-Joyce (The Outlaws), Will Poulter (Guardianes de la galaxia Vol. 3...

The new season of Black Mirror is said to be a return — in more ways than one. In the newly released trailer for Season 7, it looks like more than a few characters and episodes will be revisited, including the now iconic ''USS Callister" episode from Season 4. And according to series creator Charlie Brooker, this new batch of episodes will also be a return to form for fans of the darkly satirical and at-times harrowing anthology series.
Calling the forthcoming season "a little bit Og Black Mirror," Brooker noted that Season 7 — which is slated to hit Netflix on April 10, 2025, goes "back to basics in many ways. They're all sci-fi stories," a welcome change after the past few seasons have focused more on the horror aspect than anything. "There's definitely some horrifying things that occur," he added, "but maybe not in an overt horror-movie way. There's definitely some disturbing content in it.

Because the world does not feel dystopian enough, “Black Mirror” is finally releasing its Season 7 premiere date. The sci-fi anthology from Charlie Brooker will return on April 10 with six new episodes.
This new season will contain a previously announced followup to the Emmy-winning “USS Callister” starring Cristin Milioti. Fittingly, the trailer for this new season starts with Milioti’s Lieutenant Cole gasping as an unseen voice says “We’d like to welcome you back.”
The trailer then cycles between clips of wild scenarios that are never fully explained. One minute, a man is putting on a Batman mask. The next, Issa Rae is being transported into a black-and-white world filled with AI people. Still the next, Rashida Jones collapses like a powered off robot while pitching cereal in front of a class of children. You know, classic “Black Mirror” stuff.
But the most exciting part of this first trailer does...

The romantic comedy may not be the dominant, inescapable genre in modern Hollywood that it once was, but that doesn’t mean the opportunity to watch two actors humorously fall in love onscreen has lost its appeal. On the contrary, the impulse to turn on a classic rom-com and let the laughs (and sometimes tears) come doesn’t seem to have faded from the culture nearly as much as Hollywood’s increasingly homogeneous theatrical output would have you believe.
In the moments when that impulse comes, you may find yourself in the mood for a rom-com with sharper jokes and even more passionate bursts of romance than you can typically find in the genre’s many PG-13 entries. With that in mind, here are the 10 best R-rated rom-coms for when you want to watch one that’s a bit darker, lewder or — in some cases — sexier than usual.

British actress Carey Mulligan is known for her timeless style and elegant presence, both on-screen and on the red carpet. She is 5 feet 6 inches (167.6 cm) and stands slightly taller than the average British woman (typically 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 4 inches or 160–163 cm). Her height, paired with her sophisticated fashion choices, enhances her commanding presence in Hollywood.
In an interview with Star Magazine, Mulligan suggested she might be even taller, saying:
I’m 5ft 7ins and weigh 8st 5lbs… After I had my appendix out, during the London run of The Seagull, I went down to eight stone [114 pounds] and realized my brain doesn’t work when I’m that thin.
On the red carpet, heel height can shift perceptions of celebrity stature. Standing 6 feet ½ inches (184.2 cm), Bradley Cooper often towers over Mulligan, but with the right stilettos or platform heels, she can effortlessly narrow the visual gap.

Rupert Friend is heading into the Berlinale a little anxious.
The British actor, a veteran of the industry with major roles in Homeland, Pride & Prejudice and, most recently, Drew Hancock’s buzzy thriller Companion, was only a “whip of a thing” when Chéri premiered in competition at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival.
“I was 25 and it was probably my first big lead role,” the now-43-year-old tells The Hollywood Reporter. “From the first 20 seconds, you just felt the audience… lean back. The movie finished and it was the sound of one, slow clap. I just died.”
After this “bombing” of Stephen Frears’ Colette adaptation, Friend was a little wary of the spotlight. It impacted him for a long time after, he confesses, even though he landed the part of a key character in the wildly successful Showtime series Homeland shortly after.
It’s only right that Friend returns to Berlin with a vengeance: not one,...

It’s 3:00pm Pst and I’m calling it: “Bridget Jones” is one of the best movie franchises. It’s not an uninterrupted victory parade of total success, since “The Edge of Reason” was more like a speed bump than a story. But for the last 2.5 decades, these movies have grown out of a pitch perfect romantic comedy classic and into a sweet and enduring saga of life going on, and on, as Bridget Jones — played beautifully by Renée Zellweger — discovers that every ending is another beginning, every tragedy is surmountable, and that life is always worth living when you’re armed with hope and good humor.
That streak continues with “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” a movie that finds the title character middle-aged and widowed with two children and no direction. These movies always remind us how easy it is to lose direction, and how important it...

Bridget Jones’s Diary started as a newspaper column by Helen Fielding, became a megabestselling novel in 1996 and was adapted as a 2001 movie that grossed close to $300 million worldwide. Of course producers and audiences have wanted to keep this franchise churning out more installments across multiple media — more books, more movies, even a stage musical that never quite worked out. If you’re like me and loved the first novel and movie, you probably can’t remember anything about subsequent additions to the franchise beyond moderate to severe disappointment: After all, most stories in this genre end on “happily ever after” for a reason. And while the original Bridget Jones’s Diary is untouchable among both romcom And Christmas movies, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy seems to have been made by people who know that, and know what you loved about it.

Renée Zellweger returns for the legendary diary’s last chapter. Here’s our Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy review.
Like Top Gun: Maverick and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish before it, it’s doubtful anyone thought they needed a Bridget Jones 4. Since the UK’s favourite middle-class mess stumbled into cinemas in 2001, both the inevitable follow-up (The Edge Of Reason) and late-2010s revival (Baby) have struggled to recapture the original’s magic. In the nine years since we last saw Bridget, an avalanche of legacy sequels, requels, reboots and marketing slogans have us beaten into submission; do we really need another one? The answer, resoundingly, is yes.
Now, Bridget’s middle-class malaise has “oh fuck”ed its way cheerfully into the 2020s: her best friend Miranda (Sarah Solemani) complains about spending too much time in Soho House; Shazzer (Sally Phillips) has a podcast, and her new nanny...

The biggest movie coming to Peacock in February is arguably “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” which is set to start streaming exclusively on the platform on Valentine’s Day. As of this writing, though, the jury’s still out on whether or not that film can make up for the mistakes of 2016’s “Bridget Jones’s Baby” and take the popular rom-com franchise back to its former heights. Fortunately, you don’t have to wonder about the quality of some of the other movies that are freshly available to stream on Peacock this month.
Here are the seven best movies coming to the platform in February.
“Gone Baby Gone” (Miramax Films) “Gone Baby Gone” (2007)
Ben Affleck’s directorial career may have gone quiet in recent years, but his first effort as a director, 2007’s “Gone Baby Gone,” remains one of the more impressive debuts we’ve seen over the past 20 years.

Exclusive: In what turned into one of the more competitive open directing assignments of the year, sources tell Deadline Joe Wright has landed the highly-coveted directing job for the AI thriller Alignment at Fifth Season. Natan Dotan penned the spec with Makeready producing. Scott Silver will exec produce.
The story follows a cutting-edge tech company whose latest AI model begins manipulating global markets and stoking international conflict. A principled board member and an out of his depth software engineer must race to convince their profit-obsessed colleagues to shut down their creation before it triggers a globally catastrophic event.
Fifth Season landed the spec in one of 2024’s bigger spec sales following a highly competitive bidding war. Insiders say the search for a director was equally intense with half dozen directors in the mix for the job. Wright’s take eventually won over producers and now that he is on board,...

The American gay rights movement’s focus on marriage equality in the early 21st century wasn’t without controversy. For some, putting a premium on an arrangement so associated with heterosexual orthodoxy sold out the promise of gay liberation. Legally recognized unions represented to them an attempt to erase, not embrace, the differences within a community whose members had each other’s backs long before the federal government did.
Such conflicting views are highlighted in Andrew Ahn’s The Wedding Banquet, a film whose very title speaks to the nature of nuptials. The ceremony to which the film builds is flashy but also a façade covering up true acceptance for a coterie of queer characters. Leave it to Lily Gladstone’s Lee, an Indigenous organizer devoted to making youth of all sexual orientations feel empowered, to harmonize the opposing feelings about marriage. Yellowstone has made Kelly Reilly a household name. Her character Beth Dutton’s courage and confidence shine through her performance, but her one quirk left the actress feeling uncomfortable throughout the show’s five seasons.
A still from Yellowstone Season 5 Official Trailer| Credits: Paramount Network
Following Yellowstone Season 5 Part B’s divisive ending, both fans and cast members have been reminiscing about its best moments. The episodes released on the heels of the show’s lead actor Kevin Costner and creator Taylor Sheridan’s feud weren’t the easiest to digest. Fans hated Dutton family patriarch John Dutton and his adopted son Jamie Dutton’s (Wes Bentley) fate a sentiment echoed amongst the critics as well. However, most fans will unanimously agree with Reilly’s candid confession about her character.
Kelly Reilly despised 1 thing about Beth Dutton
Beth Dutton isn’t someone you’d look up to for leading a disciplined life.

Guillermo del Toro's 2015 film Crimson Peak might not be as well remembered as some of his other films, but it's a case study of Gothic romance and mystery. The film stars Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska in a disturbing and doomed love story between Wasikowska's Edith Cushing and Hiddleston's Thomas Sharpe. In true del Toro fashion, it's a movie that relies heavily on visuals to create the compelling atmosphere its characters inhabit. When it comes to film, the period drama has always been a staple of Hollywood. Before the age of blockbuster superhero films, it seemed like every A-list actor had at least one period drama on their resume. With these films taking place in specific time periods rather than in the modern day, there is extra effort put into the costuming, props, and set design to create a realistic, immersive experience for the viewer, transporting them back in time.
While period pieces like Pride & Prejudice (2005), Emma (2020), Little Women (2019), and The Pianist are universally regarded as great period dramas, there are plenty of period pieces that have fallen under the radar in terms of audience reception or box office returns. With Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation recently announced, it seems that the period drama has the potential to make a comeback, and many of these films are great examples of fantastic period dramas.

In a year where clear frontrunners have been slow to emerge, the Golden Globes offered crucial hints about which films and performances might emerge to lead awards season. Demi Moore appears to be the new best actress frontrunner after her win for “The Substance” in the best actress in a musical or comedy feature category.
The body horror thriller, written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, premiered at Cannes, where it was acquired by Mubi. It has maintained momentum as a critical darling. Moore’s victory on Sunday night over Mikey Madison (“Anora”), Karla Sofía Gascón (“Emilia Pérez”) and Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) is the type of moment that can shift the awards race just as Oscar ballots are set to go out later this week.

The Golden Globes have been honoring comedies since the 1950s and the days of such Billy Wilder gems as The Apartment and Some Like It Hot. But the category — which for the past 60 years has crowned a single winner among comedies and musicals — hasn’t always experienced smooth sailing.
How one defines a comedy — is it punchlines? pratfalls? subtle satire? — has been just one of the issues bedeviling the award. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association began playing even more fast and loose with definitions earlier this century when it increasingly nominated movies that seemed neither particularly funny nor acclaimed, instead using the category to bring popular films and stars into the fold that would otherwise have no way of getting there.
At the moment, the smaller, clubbier HFPA has been disbanded in favor of a larger and more representative group of global journalists. This has cut down on the number of nominated howlers,...

Howards End is a sharp, funny series that fans of Joe Wright's 2005 film adaptation of Pride & Prejudice need to see. Pride & Prejudice made audiences swoon for Matthew Macfadyen long before Succession showed just how slimy and off-putting he can be. Howards End is like the missing link between Pride & Prejudice and Succession. The BBC One/Starz series was adapted from E.M. Forster's classic novel by Oscar-winning screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea) and directed by Hettie Macdonald, who helmed several Doctor Who episodes, including the acclaimed "Blink." Hayley Atwell (known for Captain America: The First Avenger) gives a strong performance as the lead, but the best part of the series is Matthew Macfadyen in a role that's absolutely perfect for him. If your favorite parts of Pride & Prejudice were Mr. Darcy's more awkward stumbles, you need to watch this series.

Keira Knightley is widely considered one of the most beautiful actresses working today (in addition to being immensely talented). She's been working steadily since she was 17 years old, first skyrocketing to international fame for her performance in the film Bend It Like Beckham. Knightly became a bona fide star only a year after appearing in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and later in a few of its sequels. She's gone on to star in numerous big-name movies and TV series, most recently in the well-received Netflix spy thriller Black Doves.
And yet, one of Knightley's most enduring and beloved roles almost didn't happen. In 2005, the actress starred as Elizabeth Bennet in an adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. Her performance in the film garnered significant critical praise and earned Knightley Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress, among several other accolades. Working with the film's director,...

Casting is one of the most vital parts of making a movie work as the actors are the ones bringing the script to life. If the cast doesn't have good chemistry or isn't the right fit, the movie can end up underwhelming. An example of a perfect casting is Keira Knightley in Pride & Prejudice. Knightley gave a fantastic performance as Elizabeth Bennet, doing justice to the brilliant vision of Jane Austen. The movie is one of the best Austen adaptations to date and it's a movie you can visit repeatedly without ever getting bored. But would you believe that there was a chance that Knightley wasn't going to be Elizabeth? And the reason had to do with her being "too pretty."...

"Pride and Prejudice" is the kind of novel that feels modern no matter when it's read, but Jane Austen herself died in 1817, more than 70 years removed from the invention of motion pictures. In other words, she probably could never have imagined that, hundreds of years in the future, there would be so many recorded dramatic adaptations of her most celebrated work -- nor that one of them, 2005's "Pride & Prejudice," would be able to capture its spirit so brilliantly as to renew passion for the story of Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) and Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) for a whole generation.
Arguably the best Jane Austen adaptation, that Deborah Moggach-scripted, Joe Wright-directed take on the novel was so perfect -- so impeccably attentive to the sharp social observation, the warm family dynamic, the richness of local and temporal texture, and the soul-stirring romanticism of the source material --...

The best historical romance books involve well-known popular novels but also some titles that might be surprising. In general, romance is a broad category with many subgenres. There are books that perfectly blend fantasy and romance—so much so that it has now become its own genre, romantasy. There are romance book series that include aliens and iconic period romance books that later become TV shows. Romance is a successful genre because of the endless opportunities and stories that often include other genres.

Keira Knightley was a staple of the big screen in the early 2000s, starting with her big break role in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). That same year, she starred in Love Actually, which is now, for many, a Christmas classic. Knightley rounded out her 2010s with two more Pirates of the Caribbean movies, as well as Pride & Prejudice (2005) and Atonement (2007).
Knightley continued to appear regularly in movies throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s, with notable titles including The Imitation Game (2014), Everest (2015), and Boston Strangler (2023), but she was notably absent from the TV space. The actor's most recent foray into TV was as a narrator in the animated The Sound Collector, but her major push into the medium didn't actually arrive until late 2024 with the release of a spy thriller show on Netflix, a kind of project Knightley has never tackled before.
