The most common complaint that movie fans direct towards Hollywood is that remakes, reboots, and sequels are far too dominant, and the stats reflect this. 17 of the top 20 highest-grossing films of 2024 were not the first films in their series, with the only exceptions being It Ends With Us, The Wild Robot, and Wicked. While this is a harrowing trend that could bode poorly for Hollywood going forward, the continuous overflow of sequels isn't as bad as some fans may have you believe. Audiences absolutely loved legacy sequels like Gladiator II and Alien: Romulus; children and grown-ups alike flocked to the theater to see Inside Out 2 and Moana 2, and Dune: Part Two is currently nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Landman episode 3.Long before he played Tommy Norris in Landman, Billy Bob Thornton portrayed another character with the same hilariously crass sense of humor. Billy Bob Thornton is one of the best working actors in Hollywood, and he's dominated both movies and TV shows for decades. From drama to romance to Westerns like Tombstone, Thornton has essentially done it all. His most recent role, as Tommy in Landman, has highlighted his comedy skills, but Taylor Sheridan's series is far from the first time Thornton has played a hilarious and unrefined character.
In recent years, Billy Bob Thornton has mostly been known for his dramatic roles. His long-running role on the show Goliath and in the film The Gray Man both put him in rather serious positions, and he played them exceptionally well. Viewers who are less familiar with Thornton's early work may have...

David Gordon Green found the story of Nutcrackers in his friend's backyard. Well, kind of. Nutcrackers is his warmhearted new holiday dramedy about an uptight businessman (Ben Stiller) whose independent world is upended when his sister and brother-in-law pass away, and he finds himself caring for their four young children on their farm in the immediate aftermath. The roots of Nutcrackers lie in Green's own masterful directorial debut, George Washington, from 25 years ago, where he befriended the second unit cinematographer. As Green explained in a recent MovieWeb interview, the rest is history:
"I've just kept up with her. She dropped out of the movie business and went back to Ohio, where she's a fifth-generation farmer. So she dropped back to take care of the family farm. I've just kept up with her through the years. Then, when I went back to Ohio a couple years ago, I had a...

Nutcrackers marks the return of Ben Stiller in a leading role. He plays Mike, who heads to the heart of Ohio to care for his four rambunctious nephews in the aftermath of his sister and her husband passing away in a tragic car accident. Though initially hesitant, Mike realizes they may be the family he's always needed.
Director David Gordon Green was inspired by real-life brothers - Homer Janson, Ulysses Janson, Arlo Janson, and Atlas Janson - and actually filmed on their family farm. This is the first acting role for all four boys. Green is well known in the horror world for movies like Halloween Kills (2021) and Halloween (2018), but is no stranger to comedy either, as he directs and produces The Righteous Gemstones.

There is a reason certain Christmas movies stand the test of time and return year after year, and also a reason the Hallmark-style factory-made product is easily forgotten. It’s a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas and A Christmas Story are pure examples of the former. They are perennials, classics.
In fact, that sweetly nostalgic 1983 A Christmas Story is what I thought of most when watching the latest entry in the genre, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, which may not be the best Christmas movie ever, but it grabs your heart and makes you smile. It also is that increasingly rare so-called “faith based” film that doesn’t try to hit you on the head with a sermon. Instead, it manages to be thoroughly entertaining family fare that also uncovers the true, not commercial, meaning of the holiday. I wouldn’t be surprised if this Lionsgate release becomes a perennial itself.

He was one of the Bad News Bears, he earned an Oscar nomination for his performance in the film Little Children, he played Rorschach in Zack Snyder‘s take on Watchmen. He worked with Steven Spielberg on Lincoln and with Martin Scorsese on Shutter Island. He has dealt with Dollman, the Maniac Cop, and the remake RoboCop, and he played Freddy Krueger in a poorly-received remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Although the New Hollywood era that emerged in the 1970s changed many aspects of the American cinematic landscape, one of the most interesting trends was the rise of the inspirational sports genre, a style of filmmaking that had been surprisingly dormant in the previous decades. Hits like Rocky proved that there was an audience for serious films about newly introduced heroes, but comedies like Bad News Bears and Sling Shot proved that sports stories could be uplifting and hilarious at the same time. Breaking Away is often cited as the best sports film of the 1970s because it is simultaneously a window into an underrepresented competition and a terrific coming-of-age story. Although the film featured many future stars in their breakout roles, Breaking Away is best remembered for the scene-stealing performance from Dennis Quaid.

The premiere of Nutcrackers starring Ben Stiller and Linda Cardellini kicked of the 2024 Toronto Film Festival Thursday night, with several other actors in attendance on the red carpet.
The film centers Stiller’s Mike, a no-nonsense workaholic who takes over caregiving for his orphaned nephews that challenge his straig-laced living style. Working to find them a new home after their parents die in a car accident, Mike is forced to adjust to farm life before he realizes he may find a home with his nephews. This marks Stiller’s first movie role in seven years following 2017’s The Meyerowitz Stories and Brad’s Status. In between those and Nutcrackers, Stiller has spent time directing and producing 2018’s miniseries Escape at Dannemora and Apple’s sci-fi thriller show Severance, which has a second season arriving in January 2025.

When “Boulevard Nights” opened in early 1979, it was one of several major studio films — along with “The Warriors,” The Wanderers,” and “Over the Edge” — to take on gang violence as its primary subject. After the movies inspired a handful of violent incidents at theaters, Paramount doubled down on the marketing of Walter Hill‘s “The Warriors” and turned it into a box office hit; unfortunately for “Boulevard Nights” director Michael Pressman, Warner Bros. went in the opposite direction and pulled their film from the venues where violence had broken out, essentially abandoning the movie.
“Warner Bros. said, ‘We’re very proud of this movie, don’t get us wrong,'” Pressman told IndieWire, “‘but we’re not about to risk lawsuits.'” Over the years, however, “Boulevard Nights” has found the audience it always deserved via repertory screenings (it’s a perennial favorite at Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema...

If Jack Harlow once lit a fire under his career by flirting with Saweetie on a red carpet, the rumors of his suave are true. At a movie premiere — still fresh ground for the Grammy-nominated artist — Harlow is smooth. Taller than you’d expect with a baby face punctuated by diamond earrings, he is several degrees cooler than your average movie star. He doesn’t so much walk a red carpet as he strides his way around it.
Standing on a carpet Wednesday evening in New York City — at the premiere for “The Instigators,” a buddy crime comedy starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, which features Harlow as a petty thief — the rapper told Variety that he’s ready for a fresh try at acting.
“Shit got killed,” he admitted, admirably, about his first role in the 2023 reboot of “White Men Can’t Jump.”
For a first-time actor, that had to sting.

If the perfect sports movie illuminates the fundamentals that make one fall in love with the game, there may be no better movie about baseball than Carson Lund’s Eephus. Structured solely around a single round of America’s national pastime, Lund’s debut feature beautifully, humorously articulates the particular nuances, rhythms, and details of an amateur men’s league game. By subverting tropes of the standard sports movie––which often captures peak physical performance in front of legions of adoring fans––Lund has crafted something far more singularly compelling. Rather than grand slams and no-hitters, there are errors aplenty and no shortage of beer guts and weathered muscles amongst the motley crew. Lund is more interested in examining the peculiar set of social codes that only apply when one is on the field, unimpeded by life’s responsibilities and entirely focused on the rules of the game.

Most baseball movies are not, per se, about baseball. To take some examples: The Natural is about a prodigy overcoming trauma; Eight Men Out is about greed and corruption; Bad News Bears is a foul-mouthed coming-of-age flick; Bull Durham is all about Kevin Costner’s sex appeal; Moneyball carries the sport into the information age; and Field of Dreams (Costner, again) is haunted by the ghosts of baseball past.
First-time director Carson Lund clearly had this in mind when he made his feature debut Eephus, a movie steeped in nostalgia for the game itself, as well as what it represents for a bunch of men past their prime: the long afternoons in the sun, the trash-talking at the plate, the brewskies in the cooler and the kind of camaraderie you can only find in the dugout.

Johnny Knoxville takes on a role that comes with just as much drama as it does comedy with the new film Sweet Dreams. It's a film that the Jackass star compares to the classic sports comedy Bad News Bears, but with adults.
Sweet Dreams was directed by Lije Sarki, who joined Knoxville to speak about the movie with Cbr's Kevin Polowy following its digital release on April 16. In the film, Knoxville plays a recovering alcoholic who forms a baseball team with a group of misfits to save their rehab facility from getting auctioned. Sarki mentioned how the film was inspired in part by his real life, as he's struggled with addiction in the past. Though this is serious subject matter, the goal was to make light of it in an entertaining way with Sweet Dreams.

Directors are lining up left and right each month to share their favorite films from the TCM lineup, and the latest is Jason Reitman. He follows Steven Spielberg going deep on “Meet Me in St. Louis,” Martin Scorsese praising “Madonna of the Seven Moons,” Guillermo del Toro making the case why overlooked “Suspicion” is top-tier Hitchcock, and so many more.

The Underdoggs is an R-rated children's sports comedy starring Snoop Dogg as a former NFL player coaching a losing youth football team. The movie combines R-rated humor with twists on the kids sports formula to create a crowd-pleasing film. Director Charles Stone III was drawn to the project because of its portrayal of a Southern California blue-collar Little League and the transformative power of children's actions.
The world of children's sports comedies is getting an R-rated twist with The Underdoggs. The movie centers on Two Js Jennings, a washed-up NFL player who finds himself in hot water after driving recklessly in the streets of LA. Being sentenced to over 300 hours of community service in his hometown of Long Beach, he thinks he finds a way around it by coaching a losing youth football team, and a way to restore his career, only to realize he has a hard road ahead of him.

Snoop plays a former sports star who takes on losing pee-wee outfit in a charming comedy that has more than a passing resemblance to Bad News Bears
When laconic rapper-turned-actor Snoop Dogg is called on to appear in a film, he more often than not plays himself or a version thereof – and so it goes again in this salty but ultimately very wholesome sports movie. There’s even a sly parallel between the character Snoop plays and the efforts he’s made in the real world setting up an American football league for kids. Yes, his thespian range may be pretty limited, but there’s no denying Snoop has a palpable onscreen charisma and a good sense of comic timing that director Charles Stone III skilfully directs around.

Snoop Dogg stars in The Underdoggs, a sports comedy about a former NFL superstar sentenced to coach a youth football team. The movie pays tribute to genre predecessors like Bad News Bears and is both feel-good and funny. Kal Penn was excited to work with Snoop Dogg and hopes he can be in a potential fourth Harold & Kumar movie.
Kal Penn's steady return to comedy continues with The Underdoggs. The sports comedy stars Snoop Dogg as Jaycen "Two Js" Jennings, a former NFL superstar whose arrogance led to his downfall in skills and popularity. After his failed attempts to revive his career land him in trouble with the law, Two Js is sentenced to extensive community service, though elects to coach a scrappy youth football team full of foul-mouthed kids in his hometown.

Taking the inspirational sports movie template, then infusing it with so much weed and foul language that it deserves its own MPAA rating, The Underdoggs is a good example of what happens when Snoop Dogg steps into an otherwise familiar tween-age comedy to wreak havoc. The results, perhaps suprisingly, are far from disastrous and ultimately quite endearing, though parents should be forewarned of a movie that drops more f- and b-bombs than all the ordnance released during World War II.

The puckish appeal of Charles Stone III’s The Underdoggs, a new spin on The Bad News Bears, is apparent from its opening title card, which offers a warning that its R rating was well earned, that no child should watch it, and that, well, the kids you really have to worry about are the ones whose parents don’t allow them to watch R-rated films.
Snoop Dogg stars as Jaycen “Two Js” Jennings, a former high school football star whose clutch, single-handed catch during his senior-year championship game set him up for a career as a young NFL hotshot who, predictably, flamed out in a blaze of ignominy, hubris, and sativa. (His puff-don’t-pass signature end-zone dance makes it clear that the “two Js” of his nickname aren’t derived from his first and last names.) There have been, as of this writing, approximately 900 "Star Trek" episodes and 13 "Star Trek" motion pictures. That is, and forgive me for getting technical about this, a whole heck of a lot of "Star Trek."
Indeed, there has been so much gosh-darned "Star Trek" that the various writers have probably cycled through just about every possible type of story there is. This is the type of franchise where the exact same characters could do a "Bad News Bears" episode, a heart-wrenching drama about overcoming Ptsd, and an "Ocean's Eleven" episode over just a couple of months, and nobody in the audience ever batted an eye or thought that was weird. Heck, it's one of the main reasons why people now argue that "Deep Space Nine" is the best "Trek" show ever."

Billy Bob Thornton starred in two popular Christmas movies from 20 years ago, Love Actually and Bad Santa. With the persona of a profane biker that had no problem being offensive to his crowd, comic Andrew Dice Clay has made a name for himself since the late 1980s on comedy stages all across the United States by borrowing and combining mannerisms from such icons as Sylvester Stallone and Elvis Presley. Riding that fame into other areas of Hollywood, he has also actively starred in many big and small screen productions that span various genres and categories. Most recently though, the former humorist known as The Diceman has bounced right out of an action thriller called God Is a Bullet and into the role of a troubled high school basketball coach in a new movie called Warrior Strong.

The Bad News Bears feels like the kind of story that could have really happened. The idea of an underdog sports team with no hope of ever winning (under typical circumstances) is part of the tried and true sports film formula. It is inspirational and comedic and has the feel of based-on-real-life baseball stories like A League of Their Own. This has led to the speculation that the 1976 The Bad News Bears and its sequels and reboot series were based on an actual baseball coach and his ragtag crew of reject athletes.
The Bad News Bears, starring Walter Matthau as the alcoholic ex-minor-league ball player Morris Buttermaker was released in 1976 to an excellent reception. Buttermaker's junior-league sports team, the Bears, were the rejects of the junior high league and were therefore thrown together into a team that no one expected to do well. Naturally, a little unconventional coaching and...

Some of the most awesome and inspiring sports movies are not based on a true story. Although some sports movies are authentic and emotional enough to feel like they were derived from real-life teams and athletic scenarios, not every outstanding sports movie is based on true events. It's a common assumption that every great sports movie is likely based on an actual player, coach, or group of teammates who defied the odds to become champions in their given field.
Surprisingly, a significant handful of the greatest sports films ever made are entirely works of fiction. Sports movies that are not inspired by true events are not creatively inhibited by historical accuracy, allowing in some cases for more dynamic characters, bigger comeback stories, and more thoughtful plot developments. Although sports films that are based on true events carry a certain spark, the following twelve works of fiction do well to maintain...

Filmmaker Kevin Smith has a legacy sequel to Bad News Bears that's high atop his wish list. Smith, who rose to fame after his indie comedy Clerks became a big hit in 1994, has directed a variety of films, recently getting back behind the camera for Clerks III. Having gone back to his roots, Smith is working on the horror-comedy film Moose Jaws, a story that the filmmaker describes as "like Jaws but with a moose instead of a shark."
As for what's after Moose Jaws, perhaps that could be a new sequel to The Bad News Bears directed by Smith. While speaking about classic films he'd like to see rebooted on his podcast Fat Man Beyond (per ComicBook.com), Smith mentioned The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension and The Shadow as fun possibilities. But what he wants to see most of all, even hoping to direct such a reboot himself,...

Despite an uptick in sports movies, the days of Bull Durham, The Natural and Moneyball are long behind us
The crack of the bat. The roar of the crowd. The green grass and the brown dirt. These are the sights and sounds that bring joy to baseball fans every April, both in person and on the silver screen. Historically, baseball films are released in the spring to coincide with Opening Day, when even the most deadened fanbase can spare a smidge of romance and optimism. The Bad News Bears, Major League, Field of Dreams, Fever Pitch and 42 were all released in April. This year, there are none to be found, and that’s not a scheduling accident. A baseball film hasn’t had a significant theatrical release – in any month, let alone April – since 2016, when Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! landed with a thud at the box office.

When you think of "The Mandalorian," the primary cinematic influence that comes to mind might be the Japanese classic series "Lone Wolf and Cub." A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

With Creed III hitting movie screens and the spring weather finally about to bring people outside again, everyone begins thinking about sports. What will we play? What will we watch? It’s everyone’s favorite time of the year. The world of sports brings with it some great stories that inspire everyone’s daily life. It’s no surprise that films try to capture that and push the narrative format to give everyone a story they can cheer for.

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Growing up in Philadelphia, I've experienced my fair share of harsh winters. The blizzard of 1996 stands out, but there were a number of other rough years for a while too. Although, when I moved to Chicago a few years ago, I experienced a whole new level of frigid chills. It got even worse when a polar vortex delivered such sub-zero temperatures and precipitation that people were advised not to leave their houses since even the slightest bit of exposed skin could get frostbite within minutes. Seriously, despite this year being relatively tame in comparison, midwestern winters are no joke. And someone else who knew this was Walter Matthau.

“More Than Robots” is a sports film like you’ve never seen before.
Sure, it has teams and there is some fierce competition. But instead of a ball that is being passed around, “More Than Robots” follows groups of high school students who quickly assemble robots, create custom programs that control the robots and then enter their robots into battle. There are some classics amongst them, too, unfortunately, so you might want to fit in a last minute rewatch before they vanish from Netflix’s library.
On the first day of November, four titles are being removed, including horror remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, children’s animated sequel Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and Gerard Butler action movie Olympus Has Fallen. 2017 horror Death House is also leaving on the 4th, while drama Into the Forest departs Netflix on the 6th and Jamie Foxx vehicle Sleepless is among those disappearing the following day.
Here’s the full list of everything leaving in November:...

Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies and many more at Trailers From Hell. Crime is a hot topic in the movies, but be careful – you don’t always know who the criminals are.
Clay Pigeon didn’t exactly set 1971 on fire, but if it had it would have been liable for more serious crimes than artistic ones. Plus, in the pairing-wine-with-movies biz, it’s always touch-and-go when dealing with a movie involving substance abuse. The laughs don’t exactly fall out of the balcony.
This movie starred Tom Stern, who also co-directed with Lane Slate. You may know Stern as the one-time husband of Samantha Eggar, or he may be on your radar for being what IMDb calls the “Orson Welles of ‘60s biker movies.” Citizen Knucklehead, anyone?
In Clay Pigeon, he was a Vietnam vet who wanted to kick hard drugs.
