In Hollywood, actors have taken roles that have completely transformed the genre. But when Ralph Fiennes brought the Vatican to the big screen, everyone was left in complete awe. While doing this was not an easy task, yet Conclave managed to pull this off without even filming inside its historic halls. This, in itself, is strictly forbidden, but with the movie, the actor managed to transport the viewers into one of the most mysterious events of the world—the election of a new pope.

With the Vatican off-limits, the entire production crew, alongside director Edward Berger, had to find a creative way to make the setting feel as authentic as possible. And it’s safe to say that the movie pulled this off with ease.

When Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman isn't thinking about the ongoing battle of the making of Constantine 2 or the epic follow-up to I Am Legend's alternate ending, the acclaimed writer and director has had his mind on the world of legendary '60s sci-fi. Irwin Allen was behind the eclectic retro-futuristic shows like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of Giants, and The Time Tunnel, which happen to be the three shows that Legendary Television has hired Goldsman to recreate for a modern audience.
While it may sound odd that the same visionary writer that brought fans both the moving drama Cinderella Man and the goofy comic book film Batman Forever is now working on a re-imagined retro sci-fi TV universe, Goldsman has always had a diverse portfolio. He has worked on a variety of projects, like the Best Picture winner A Beautiful Mindand the hit...

Why Did Tom Hanks Go Pantless In Front Of The Mona Lisa? ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Tom Hanks has been in some unforgettable scenes throughout his career, but nothing quite compares to when he found himself pantless in front of the Mona Lisa. While filming the 2006 mystery The Da Vinci Code at the Louvre, the Hollywood legend was in such a race against time that he had no choice but to change outfits in the gallery—giving Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece a front-row seat to an unexpected wardrobe change.

The Secret of the Shiledars has to be a good attempt to put forward an Indiana Jones/Da Vinci Code-style treasure hunt drama that involves figures from Indian history. The story revolves around a young man who learns of a secret society his father was a part of. He is suddenly made a part of it and has to locate a treasure that was seemingly lost according to many historians. The show involves many people seeking to financially benefit from finding this treasure, while others only want to find it for the sake of finding it. These characters set in motion the plot of The Secret of the Shiledars.

The cultural standing of horror movies has changed over the years, though it remains one of the most controversial genres. During the 1970s, when gory slashers first burst on the scene, many saw the genre as pure schlock, or even worse, something sinister and immoral. In the 2010s, the perception of horror changed with the advent of the "elevated horror" genre and the success of A24's slate of sleek, supposedly more intellectual horror movies.
And yet, horror still isn't widely recognized as a prestigious or award-worthy genre. Horror actors rarely get nominated for big awards in these films, with Demi Moore's surprising Golden Globe win for the nauseating body horror movie "The Substance" proving an exception to that rule. That's probably why, when you think of beloved or respected Hollywood actors, horror usually isn't the first genre that comes to mind, but maybe it should be.

"I only directed something someone else wrote once and it was a misbegotten adventure from the beginning, as much my fault as anybody else's." Those are the words of director David Koepp, speaking to UCLA in 2022. The misbegotten adventure in question was 2015's "Mortdecai," a globe-trotting comedy starring then-a-lister Johnny Depp. It was a massive failure both critically and commercially, one that Koepp doesn't seem to have an interest in defending.
Koepp is no stranger to big hits. As a screenwriter, he helped turn "Jurassic Park" into one of the biggest movies ever, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. As a director? It's a touch more spotty, but the man knows his way around a success. He previously helmed the thriller "Secret Window,...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Uncharted! The Uncharted movie ending suggested there was more to come, setting up a potential franchise based on the hit game series. The globe-trotting action-adventure caper sees Holland's Nathan Drake team up with Sully (Mark Wahlberg) to find his brother, the lost Magellan treasure, and his own identity along the way. Throw in some petty theft, a missing brother, and a horde of obsessive treasure hunters, and it's a recipe for intrigue. But is there subtext and symbolism in there?
Uncharted eschewed many modern blockbuster tropes — such as deconstructing villains or endless thematic gloom — to make something that lands somewhere between The Goonies and The Da Vinci Code. The approach made for a family-appropriate action movie, while also nailing some of what makes the Uncharted games so beloved. Even for a relatively straightforward story, however, Uncharted does have depth. It explores weighty moral...

Selena Gomez’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ Defeated in BAFTA 2025 Race by Ralph Fiennes’ Vatican Thriller Mystery
BAFTA 2025 nominations are here, and Selena Gomez’s Emilia Pérez has officially lost the top spot to Ralph Fiennes’ Conclave. After leading the nomination list in the Golden Globes and winning in multiple categories, many people thought that Emilia Pérez would be sweeping the entire award season.

However, surprising many, Gomez’s movie fell short of a few nominations to establish its dominance in the BAFTA awards. Interestingly, Fiennes’ mystery thriller based in the Vatican, Conclave, which managed to gain six nominations in the Golden Globe awards, and won in only one category has pulled ahead in the race.
As many have stated, the race is quite neck to neck this award season, as 2024 saw the release of many spectacular movies. Not to mention the magnificent performances the actors presented on screen. As a result, it’ll be interesting to see who manages...

Here’s What Fox News Host Greg Gutfeld Said About Taylor Swift (Photo Credit – Instagram/Wikipedia)
Fox News anchor Greg Gutfeld is widely known for his unapologetic comedy that often embraces politically incorrect jabs and body-shaming. Never one to shy away from controversies by targeting celebrities, Gutfeld once again took aim at pop sensation Taylor Swift on a recent episode of his comedy-news hybrid show, Gutfeld.
While Swift has previously faced ridicule from Gutfeld and many others for her perceived lack of intellect and the long history of break-ups, the 5 ‘6” comedian shifted focus to the appearance of the 5 ’11” star this time. Encouraging people to “stick to the absolute truth,” Gutfeld declared, “Taylor Swift is a six at best,” sparking loud cheers from the audience.
To contextualize his remarks about Taylor Swift further, Gutfeld defined “The Trump Effect” as “the freedom to say what you know is real, not what the media tells you is true.

What Did Tom Hanks Say About The Da Vinci Code Sequels? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Tom Hanks once opened up about his role in The Da Vinci Code and stated, “Robert Langdon sequels are hooey.” During a 2022 interview with The New York Times, Hanks revealed if he considered appearing in the sequels to The Da Vinci Code a “cynical” move. “God, that was a commercial enterprise… The Da Vinci Code was hooey,” the Academy Award winner stated.
Speaking about The Da Vinci Code books, Hanks said, “Those are delightful scavenger hunts that are about as accurate to history as the James Bond movies are to espionage.” He continued, “But they’re as cynical as a crossword puzzle. All we were doing is promising a diversion.”

Ron Howard has made a number of great movies. Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Splash, Night Shift, Parenthood, and The Paper are all masterpieces of their respective genres, and have emerged as time-honored classics that are worth revisiting for anyone interested in seeing why certain films resonate with a generation. He also has a few films so disastrous that they are worthy of extended academic analysis, such as the derided live-action remake of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Hillbilly Elegy, and the dull conspiracy thriller, The Da Vinci Code. Compared to these incredible highs and mind-boggling lows, 2015’s In the Heart of the Sea feels like a complete and utter oddity because of how forgettable it was. It’s a perfectly adequate, otherwise-insignificant historical epic that just so happens to feature excellent performances by Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, and Cillian Murphy, who bring to life the real story of a...

Akiva Goldsman has had many highs and many lows in his Hollywood screenwriting career. The scribe won an Academy Award in 2001 for writing "A Beautiful Mind," but he had previously been nominated for Razzies (honoring the worst in filmmaking) for writing the screenplays to "A Time to Kill" and the atrocious "Batman & Robin." He's been deeply involved in major blockbusters and media franchises, writing "The Da Vinci Code," 1998's "Lost in Space," and "The Divergent Series: Insurgent." He also penned "I, Robot," "I Am Legend," and most recently, "The Dark Tower."

Certain actors and movie stars may have gained immense success for a particular role or type of protagonist and chose to stick to it. While always playing the hero doesn't mean always playing the same type of character, some actors rarely play the bad guy. Some of the greatest actors of all time never actually played villains, which proves that sticking to heroic roles is not necessarily a bad thing.
What goes hand in hand with this phenomenon is an actor's popularity and public perception. It's rare to go to a Jason Statham, Keanu Reeves, or Will Smith film, and expect them not to be the hero of the story they're in. For some, they found their niche at an early age and just ran with it. For others, it might be a safe space to rest after a lengthy and varied career. Whatever the reasoning may be, these actors put audiences at ease,...

In 2003, author Dan Brown published The Da Vinci Code and wound up creating a bestselling phenomenon. Brown's story, which re-examined the very bedrock upon which Christianity rests, would later be turned into a movie starring America's Dad, Tom Hanks, and under the direction of one of our greatest living filmmakers, Ron Howard. Despite raising a fair bit of controversy, The Da Vinci Code turned out to be a massive success, raking in over $700 million at the box office. But looking back on it, it's hard to see what holds up about The Da Vinci Code. It's a convoluted mess, held together by Hanks's dogged performance, and it approaches history & religion with all the tact of a monkey holding a chainsaw.

“Heretic” is here.
A24’s latest high-minded horror movie follows a pair of adorable Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), who arrive at the cottage-like home of a reclusive Englishman Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant) and get much more than they bargained for. What starts off as a spirited conversation about faith becomes something much more horrific, as Mr. Reed starts to challenge and then push them in some truly perverse, violent ways.
Will the two missionaries escape this man’s vile grasp? And what will be left of them if they do?
We’re going to talk about the ending of the excellent “Heretic,” including comments from the film’s writer/directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, perhaps best known as the creators of “A Quiet Place.” But this will be a spoiler-heavy breakdown, so turn back now if you haven’t watched the movie.

Disney's live-action 2017 adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast," for example, was restricted from playing in both Kuwait and a city in Alabama due to a blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot of two men dancing, while Pixar's "Lightyear" ended up banned in 14 countries due to a shot of two women sharing a brief, chaste queer kiss. Institutional homophobia unfortunately isn't new or surprising, but plenty of movies have also been banned for other reasons ranging from depictions of time travel (in the case of "Back to the Future") to "The Da Vinci Code" and its exploration of Christian apocrypha.
What's ban-worthy in one country may not even be noticeable in another, as is the case with the prop choice that led to the Tom Holland-starring "Uncharted" being banned in Vietnam and the Philippines. Ruben Fleischer's adaptation...

Tom Hanks once spilled the beans on a surprising regret from Angels & Demons—and nope, it wasn’t about hunting down ancient clues or dodging cryptic villains. It all revolved around his unexpected encounter—or rather, missed encounter with the Man of Steel actress.

Hanks looked back, admitting that while he unraveled Vatican mysteries, he also missed the chance to work closely with his co-star. For Hanks, it was a “what if” moment in his film journey, wishing he’d had more time to share the screen with one of cinema’s future powerhouses.

However, when one becomes such a great figure, humanity is often lost in the eyes of its admirers. Although Hanks is known for his ability to master any character, it does not stop him from getting nervous. Even though he has six Oscar nominations and two wins under his belt, the actor confessed that he is still afraid of getting fired from a role.

When Dan Brown's museum-mystery thriller "The Da Vinci Code" was published in 2003, it quickly became the new King of the Airport Novels, present in the hands of every beach vacationer and long-distance commuter in the country. Brown essentially blended the religious esoterica of Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum," but ran it through a pulpy Michael Crichton machine, creating a historical potboiler to end all historical potboilers.
The story involved a "symbologist" named Robert Langdon who is alerted to secret clues at a murder scene at the Louvre, called there because of his field of expertise. Langdon was altered by Sophie Neveu, a police cryptographer who has a secret connection to the victim, as she feels there is a deeper mystery afoot. Tom Hanks is one of the most revered artists in Hollywood. An exceptional actor, with outstanding versatility, Hanks has become one of the most beloved actors of his generation. He has also donned the hat of being a writer, director, and producer. In over four decades of his career in the industry, Hanks’ films have amassed $5.57 billion in box-office earnings. (via Yahoo Finance). Forrest Gump (1994), Philadelphia (1993), and Saving Private Ryan (1998) are some of Hanks’ biggest films that heavily contributed to his image of consistently being the most bankable star in Hollywood.
Hanks’s creativity is not limited to acting. He is also a filmmaker and has started and been part of several other ventures, outside of films. From owning a production company to launching an app, Tom Hanks has been up to many things that have made his estimated net worth to be in multimillion dollars, as per Celebrity Networth.

Paul Bettany has experienced a ton of success over the last couple of years working under Marvel for the Iron Man and Avengers sagas. However, the 53-year-old veteran is back at it again with a brand new movie coming out on November 1, 2024, called Here. What’s more exciting about this movie is that it will star the legendary Tom Hanks, who will be reuniting with the iconic Robin Wright, who played his love interest in Forrest Gump.

October ends with yet another sequel in a month that’s been chock full of sequels with some clearly doing far better than others. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
One thing that’s set 2024 apart from other recent years is that there has been a noticeable lack of superhero and comic book movies, possibly because both Marvel and DC had such a weak 2023. Along comes Sony Pictures’ “Venom: The Last Dance,” the third (and reportedly final) movie starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock aka Venom, the Spider-Man villain who has become a popular anti-hero in his own right.
The first “Venom” movie opened in October 2018 to $80.3 million, going on to make $856 million worldwide, followed by the sequel “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” which opened with $90 million in October 2021, while Covid was still pervasive. That only made $501 million globally, though both movies made $213.5 million domestically with the...

What would the moviegoing experience be without Sir Ian McKellen? An actor with a towering, half-century-plus career, theater-trained performer McKellen has become synonymous not just with great plays and serious dramas, but with huge sci-fi and fantasy blockbusters. McKellen headlined two major franchises in the aughts, playing indelible parts in both Peter Jackson' "Lord of the Rings" trilogy (plus the less beloved prequel saga) and pre-mcu superhero standout the "X-Men" trilogy.
McKellen adds his signature gravitas to every role, and he's elevated plenty of so-so films, like "The Da Vinci Code," "The Golden Compass," and -- dare I say -- "Cats." With a career so sprawling and significant, it's difficult to say just which of McKellen's films is his best, but where human brains fail, the (sometimes super-wonky) metrics of the Rotten Tomatoes algorithm theoretically succeed. We may not be able to pick just one McKellen performance that stands above the rest,...

Estonia’s Jevgeni Supin from Zolba Productions, credited for the first Estonian Viaplay original “Who Shot Otto Mueller,” has unveiled his slate of five high-end dramas, including “My Dear Mother” repped by Film.UA Group and “Von Fock,” due to world premiere at Tallinn TV Beats’ first Screening Day on Nov. 20.
Supin’s extensive slate and the caliber of his TV projects, all framed as international co-productions, reflect both his ambition to set Estonian -and Baltic- drama on the global map and his pioneering breakthroughs in co-production.
The four-part period crime “Von Fock”, for instance, was the first Estonian series ever to receive support from both Creative Europe’s Media Program and Eurimages’ pilot program for series co-productions in June. “This [EU public money] meant the world to me,” said Supin, who recently stepped down as head of TV Beats Forum to fully focus on producing. “It shows that we indie producers from the...

Emerald Fennell has cast her first film since Saltburn, as she takes on adaptation of Wuthering Heights. More here.
Despite being one of the greatest novels written in the English language (apart from The Da Vinci Code), it’s probably fair to say that we’ve never had a definitive screen version of Wuthering Heights. Sure, you might well have a favourite Heathcliff, whether that’s Timothy Dalton, Tom Hardy or otherwise, but given just how iconic the novel is, we’ve yet to see a version that fully does it justice.
Enter Emerald Fennell then. The director behind Promising Young Woman and Saltburn is tackling Emily Brontë’s seminal gothic romance, or as the immortal British sitcom, Peep Show once called it, ‘not a love story but a clucking cluck story’.
Or words similar to that effect, anyway.

Ron Howard's acting career was part of a family legacy, as his father, Rance, was already a prolific performer when he was born in 1954. Howard's first professional acting credit is for the 1959 feature "The Journey," with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. That same year, the five-year-old Ron infiltrated TV, appearing as precocious moppets in multiple hot shows.
More notably, beginning in 1960, Ron -- credited as Ronny -- began starring on "The Andy Griffith Show," playing Opie, the son of Griffith's character. Howard would appear in 243 of the show's 249 episodes, over the course of eight seasons. While appearing on "Andy Griffith," Howard would continue to be a TV presence, appearing in dozens of additional hot shows, as well as several notable B-pictures.
Even in his teen years, Howard continued to act, proving that he was no mere child prodigy. He appeared in George Lucas' nostalgia film "American Graffiti," and...

With The Walking Dead franchise returning Sept. 29 via Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol, the second season of the spinoff series will unfold as Norman Reedus’ titular character takes on the zombie apocalypse — this time in the dilapidated walls of the Louvre in Paris, France.

“When Norman and I first talked about the show, we loved the juxtaposition of being in a place like France, which is all about high culture and beautiful architecture and high fashion, and juxtaposing that against the apocalypse, which is everything falling apart and everything’s sh–ty.”

It’s easy to take Home Improvement at face value. It’s a simple story about a Michigan family man named Tim Taylor, his wife Jill, his three sons and, of course, his next-door neighbor Wilson, who perpetually hides the lower portion of his face as if it were Austin Powers’ junk.
Play
In retrospect, even though it regularly featured the raw sexual charisma of Richard Karn, Home Improvement was actually pretty dull. Thankfully, one viewer has come along with a wildly outlandish theory that makes the sitcom far more intriguing.
A fan on Reddit proposed an elaborate theory that Home Improvement is really biblical in nature, with Tim “the Tool Man” Taylor acting as a metaphorical “Christ figure.” Which may seem pretty tough to swallow, if not for the fact that Tim Allen does have some experience when it comes to playing bearded deities associated with Christmas.

Ron Howard has always taken pride in being an eclectic filmmaker — in the last 40 years, he has made movies about mermaids, cocoons, auto factories, astronauts, firefighters, newspapers, beautiful minds, cave rescuers, the Grinch, the Da Vinci Code, the Beatles, and Pavarotti. But at the Toronto Film Festival premiere of his latest movie, “Eden,” he declared that the film stands farther apart from his other work than anything he has ever done. He’s right, though not for the reason he thinks.
“Eden,” which is based on events that unfolded 100 years ago on one of the Galápagós Islands, is a difficult movie to characterize. It’s been labeled as a “thriller,” but I would describe it as a misanthropic survivalist “Robinson Crusoe” meets “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” with deranged footnotes by Friedrich Nietzsche. For Howard, the film sure is different. Yet there’s another word for it — the word is terrible.

On paper, there are few filmmakers who seem less-suited to the rigors of a project like Eden than Ron Howard. This is the grim story, after all, of real-life individuals in the late 1920s who were so troubled by the state of humankind that an escape to the Galápagos Islands seemed like the only sensible way out. This is a tale replete with deception, murder, tooth-extraction, one of the more ridiculous childbirth scenes in cinema, and, in what may be a first for Howard, male frontal nudity. (Though my memory of Cocoon is fuzzy.)
Still, Howard deserves credit for taking on a variety of complex projects along with his more audience-friendly efforts. For every The Da Vinci Code or Solo: A Star Wars Story, there is a Frost/Nixon or Rush. (Let’s leave Hillbilly Elegy out of this.) Eden attempts to combine both styles––grit with triumph of the human spirit.

Toronto film festival: Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney and Ana de Armas fight for supremacy on a remote island in this 1930s-set true story that descends into tiresomely silly reversals
The films of Ron Howard – usually polite, Oscar-aiming true stories such as A Beautiful Mind or Apollo 13 or solidly made, anonymous IP blockbusters such as The Grinch or The Da Vinci Code – have not shown the director to be someone greatly interested in exploring or even showing much awareness of real, down-to-the-core darkness. His All-American persona, as a well-meaning aw shucks nice guy (who now claims shock upon hearing the subject of his 2020 film Hillbilly Elegy might actually not be such an inspiring figure after all) would not make him seem like the perfect match for a nasty and violent tale of the horrors we’re willing to inflict upon each other to get what we want.

Jude Law doesn’t want to take all the credit.
He delivers one of the many go-for-broke performances in Ron Howard’s star-studded “Eden,” a stranger-than-fiction survival thriller about European settlers who seek new life on a previously uninhabited island in the Galápagos. As the official logline explains, “They believe they’ve found paradise — only to discover that hell is other people.” And yes, it’s actually based on true events.
Though his character of Friedrich Ritter, a doctor living in total isolation with his wife (Vanessa Kirby) before all these other people show up, goes completely nude in one scene of the film, Law insisted he wasn’t the only actor on set to take a creative leap of faith.

On a recent July afternoon, the ever-mercurial Tom Rothman arrives in good spirits for a tour of Columbia Pictures’ archives in honor of the studio’s 100th anniversary. “Ask a lot of questions, because after this, I must go back to work,” says Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman. “This is way more fun than getting yelled at by agents.”
