Disney Execs Talk Quality Over Quantity, Plug Parks, Say ESPN Still Eyeing 2025 Dtc Launch And More From Bob Iger’s Town Hall
Image
Bob Iger and top execs stressed a commitment to quality over quantity as the studio’s film slate has had a bumpy ride, talked up parks and ESPN and looked at the future of its television business at an anticipated all-hands-on-deck town hall today, one year after the Disney CEO returned to the helm.

“I spent the year with the team fixing a lot of things,” Iger said. “But I feel that we’ve just emerged from a period of a lot of fixing to one of building again and I can tell you building is a lot more fun than fixing.”

“in assessing some of our performance, recently, one of the reasons I believe it’s fallen off a bit is that we were making too much,” Iger said. “I think when it comes to creativity, quality is critical, of course, and quantity in many ways can destroy quality.

Disney Pitches 30-Year Expansion Plan To Anaheim Leaders, Projects “DisneylandForward” Will Create 2,200 Jobs
Image
In the same week that Disney Parks & Resorts boss Josh D’Amaro announced the company was abandoning a new $1 billion employee campus in Orlando, the president of Disneyland Resort Ken Potrock hosted an OCForum meeting with local business and political leaders in Anaheim to discuss DisneylandForward, the company’s 30-year plan for expansion and innovation in the area.

While DisneylandForward was first introduced in 2021, this week Potrock and other Disney executives revealed new details about the project, including a Disney-sponsored economic study from Cal State Fullerton estimating that, for every $1 billion Disney invests to update and renovate the resort, more than 4,000 jobs and $1.1 billion in economic output would be generated during the four-year construction period. Thereafter, according to the Los Angeles Times, that investment will generate $253 million annually in economic output, $15 million in tax revenue and 2,292 jobs.

U.S. Streaming Service Topic, Russia’s Oscar Nominated Non-Stop Team on True Crime Miniseries ‘Frozen Land’ (Exclusive)
Image
Topic, the U.S. streaming service from First Look Media, and Non-Stop Production, the Russian film studio behind Oscar nominated “Leviathan” and “Loveless,” will jointly produce “Frozen Land,” an eight-part limited series exploring the story of real-life Russian serial killer Dmitry Lebed, who terrorized a provincial Russian town from 2012 to 2017. It will be the first Russian series ever to be co-produced with a U.S. company, according to Non-Stop.

The show will be based on the Holod Media feature article “Road to Askiz,” written by Taisiia Bekbulatova (pictured left), and will be directed by Valeria Gai Germanika (pictured right), one of the most well-known and respected directors in Russia.

The drama centers on the injustices of the criminal justice system in Russia. For years, women of Abakan were forced to suffer in silence while the local police refused to investigate their claims of rape and brutal abuse. “Frozen Land” tells...

Alexander Rodnyansky
Series Mania: Oscar-Nominated Producer Alexander Rodnyansky on Crime Thriller ‘Frozen Land’
Alexander Rodnyansky
Twice Oscar-nominated producer Alexander Rodnyansky is to present the Russian crime drama “Frozen Land” at the Co-Pro Pitching Sessions at Series Mania (March 25 to April 7), which is an all-digital affair this year. Rodnyansky spoke to Variety about the show.

The eight-part series, written by Sergey Kaluzhanov (pictured right) and directed by Darya Zhuk (pictured left), is based on the real-life reign of terror inflicted by a serial rapist and murderer in Khakassia, a remote region in Siberia, Russia.

An important element of the story is the indifference shown by the police to the first rape victims, before the rapist becomes a murderer. However, the main protagonist isn’t a policeman, a victim or the killer, but his girlfriend, Stella, a single mother.

“She led a rather ordinary and bleak life before meeting Dmitry Lebed, the serial killer at the center of ‘Frozen Land,’ whom she sees as the love of her life.

Eran Riklis
Streaming online via video presentations from March 25, Series Mania’s experimental Digital Forum will make or break on the quality of its centerpiece, its Co-Pro Pitching Sessions. This year’s lineup, at least on paper, looks particularly strong.

“The Abduction of Yossele Shuchmacher” (Israel)

Co-created and to be directed by celebrated Israeli cineaste Eran Riklis, based on a notorious true case in 1961 and co-created by “Fauda” writer Moshe Zonder.-Backed by veteran producer Michael Sharfshtein, the title “blends an intimate, painful drama within a powerful social-political set up, wrapped as a psychological thriller,” says Riklis.

“The Black Lady”

An English-language six-part bio-series led by Brussels-based At-Prod about Madga Goebbels which author Hélène Duchateau describes as a “depressingly modern” miniseries: “Beyond Madga Goebbels’ unique experience, it echoes the growing populist trends in Europe and the processes of radicalization in our time.”

“Casa Girls” (France)

Richard Armitage Joins Clearance
Richard Armitage
Ex-m-15 Spook Richard Armitage and current MI6 agent Naomie Harris are joining forces for Clearance, an East African-set action-drama that will call on their field skills. The story has Armitage’s salty mine clearer and his pregnant wife (Harris) being kidnapped in South Sudan. The pair manage to make their escape, only to find themselves forced to navigate a deadly minefield. Presumably this will be without access to all the usual tools of the trade, unless the kidnappers have happily left them lying around. Which would be incompetent kidnapping.UMedia is shopping the movie around the Cannes film market. “We don’t see many scripts as strong as Clearance: a smart action film, set against an interesting, topical background,” says Peter Rogers, head of the film group. "It’s a tense, thrilling and emotionally hard-hitting story that we think audiences will love.”Behind the camera is Finnish director Aku Louhimies whose Tolstoy adaptation,...

Disney Sues Over Mockbuster Frozen Land
It can be a tricky thing breaking into the world of heralded animation, but if you can't beat 'em, copy 'em. This seems to be the thought process over at Phase 4 Films, a company currently being called out by Disney over promotion of their latest release Frozen Land. THR reports the official complaint points out that Frozen Land opened less than three weeks ahead of Disney's Frozen, but notably at that time it was called The Legend of Sarila. With that name, this Phase 4 feature barely made a blip at the box office, so time to rebrand, right? Cartoon Brew shows the previous poster, and the new one, which boasts a logo strikingly similar to that of Disney's newest princess venture. Disney is suing over what they (and really anyone with eyes) see to be a blatant mimicking of their brand. Should a judge see their point, this means...
