    It's not that bad...

Prior to renting this DVD, I had never heard of this short movie and from the cover didn't expect much from it. There was one comment on the back which said it was hilarious or something similar, but said comment was probably written by a critic eager to get his/her name published on the back of a DVD case.

Upon watching, I was assaulted by lame and cliché 'jokes', half of them ripped off from Mad Magazine. The starting scenes seem like a poor imitation of the vastly superior 'Spaceballs', and sound like something my seven year old cousin jokes about. I must say however, that it gets marginally better as the thing goes along, with slightly more original humour used, but really, it only got a few minor chuckles from me. It says something about the movie when half of the laughs come from the look of the claymation models, and variations on the various theme songs of the movies the characters are a part of.

Voice acting was another let down, being rather flat and uninspired. According to the small 'behind the scenes' featurette, they had many auditions and only chose the best. I had a hard time believing this, as despite it being a parody the voice acting for the most part sounds like they picked up any random person off the street to do it.

What makes this movie barely acceptable, however, is it's combination of CGI and claymation. While I have seen better, the animation is rather smooth and certain scenes were generated pretty well. The characters look rather humorous which helps put some life into the fairly lame jokes. However, I feel explosions and such could've been done a lot better, as they look like they came out of the original Doom video game at times.

To conclude, I suppose this is worth checking out if one has nothing to do. It is only half an hour or so which is a definite plus, as otherwise it would simply drag on for too long. Don't go in expecting much, but if you're bored like I was this will give you something to do. Acceptable, but only barely so.

    For the kiddies

It lacks the sophistication of Robot Chicken to be sure, but if you want to see your kids roll on the floor, then this is a good one to check out!

    Hilariously "Kwirky" Trek/Wars Spoof

This almost-masterful stop-motion short film may seem like just another "Star Wars" spoof, but that's where it gets you. It is, in fact, a warped and twisted lampoon of "Star Trek," as well, because the universes of these two sci-fi juggernauts are somehow fused in a storyline involving a monolith, a crazy crew, RoboCop, and a spoof of "The X-Files" (starring agents Moldy and Scummy). Featuring lots of clay blood and immature humor, this send-up is actually much better than you'd expect, especially if you, like myself, are a part of the "Family Guy"/"Futurama"/"Simpsons" school of animated entertainment.

See "Star Warp'd". If for nothing else, than just to hear Mini Maul say, "Can't we all just get along?"

    For the fans

Look at the DVD package and you'll know to expect references to Star Wars, Star Trek, Terminator, ET and RoboCop. But they don't mention quick cameos from X-Files, Predator, Alien, 2001: A Space Odyssey and a set homage to Back To The Future.

Done on a shoestring budget in someone's garage studio, this short movie could almost be considered a fan film. Being a sci-fi fan I love the mish-mash of all the references, especially the theme music which is a great conjoining of the Star Wars and Star Trek titles that actually works.

Worth a view for the poke they take at all these different sci-fi greats, Star Warp'd truly is warped and should please those who are fans of the parody film.

"it will never bother us again"

The packaging was misleading. Nowhere inside did it allude to how really bad bathroom humor can be unsurprisingly unfunny. I liked the idea of mixing Star Wars & Star Trek, and to do it in a claymation universe sounded strangely appealing. These guys just did it in about as bad of a way that is humanly possible. I wish I can get those 32 minutes back. Maybe I'd do something more entertaining like get a kidney stone or clean the grease trap under the stove...

My brother sometimes asks "what did you do with it?", wondering to what end the Star Warped DVD has come, to which I singly and darkly reply: "it will never bother us again".
