Take the carnage home with the Nobody 2 Collector’s Edition 4K Blu-ray; available on digital today!
Image
The late summer action fare, Nobody 2, was a hit with us. Our Chris Bumbray had a blast with the film, saying, “Nobody 2 is exactly the movie its trailer promises — a hyper-violent take on National Lampoon’s Vacation. While embracing a lighter vibe than its predecessor, the movie is just as violent and action-packed as the last one, and serves as a tightly paced shot of adrenaline that’s guaranteed to please action fans.”

Now, Blu-ray.com has revealed the new physical media release of Nobody 2 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The Collector’s Edition 4K and Standard Blu-ray is due to hit retailers on October 7. The digital version is available now!

Steven Spielberg Produced A Mark Wahlberg Drama That Fired Ryan Gosling

After the success of his "Lord of the Rings" movies, director Peter Jackson could do no wrong. He was beloved by the Hollywood establishment, beloved by the Academy, and beloved by fantasy nerds the world over. His "Rings" movies were phenomenal productions, telling an epic story that took a trio of three-hour movies to cover, and Jackson was rewarded with geek world canonization and permission to make whatever dream movie he wanted. So, he followed "Lord of the Rings" with a slick, expensive, and utterly self-indulgent remake of "King Kong," a $207 million, 187-minute spectacular featuring cinema's favorite giant ape.

With "King Kong" out of his system, it was time for...

How to watch the MonsterVerse movies in order (including Monarch: Legacy of Monsters)
Image
Excuse the pun, but Legendary and Warner Bros.' MonsterVerse has been a Titan of Hollywood for over a decade now. The franchise has brought the two most legendary movie monsters back to the silver screen, taking them on solo adventures, making them face off against each other, and eventually teaming them up in what can only be described as larger-than-life showdowns. And, as audiences, we love to see Godzilla and King Kong embark on these adventures every single time.

The franchise has had some highs and lows along the way, with some of its earlier outings not getting the buzz they hoped and some of its more recent installments breaking franchise box office records.

Primitive War Is The Greatest Non-Jurassic Park Dinosaur Movie Ever Made
Image
In the realm of dinosaur cinema, if there is such a thing, Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" is the unquestioned king. It's not unlike how Spielberg's "Jaws" is the unquestioned king of all shark movies. Everything else is just gunning for second place. When it comes to dinosaur motion pictures, though, it's largely been a distant second, and most people would probably just put their second-favorite "Jurassic" film in that number two spot. At long last, however, a non-"Jurassic" contender has entered the arena. That contender is "Primitive War."

Hailing from director Luke Sparke and based on writer Ethan Pettus' novel series of the same name, we first...

15 Best Movies Like Jurassic Park
Image
"An adventure 65 million years in the making ..." says the tagline on the poster for Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park." And for once, the ads don't lie. Decades later, this groundbreaking dinosaur adventure remains a masterclass in blockbuster filmmaking, with enough power, thrills, and wit to rival -- and in many ways surpass -- modern summer blockbusters, including the franchise's latest, "Jurassic World: Rebirth." (Hint: they should've stopped after one.)

Spielberg helms "Jurassic Park" with the same class and grace as his more serious pictures. Sure, it only goes about a foot deep in terms of its story and characters -- played by Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum -- but there's a sense of wonder percolating throughout, and plenty of weight given to the extravagant action scenes. Grown men practically weep at the sight of a Triceratops, and when a Tyrannosaurus rex attacks, its victims are paralyzed by terror and amazement.

Universal Orlando Closes Rip Ride Rockit Roller Coaster After 15 Years
Image
Universal Orlando Resort has officially closed a beloved roller coaster 15 years after it debuted. Founded in 1990, Universal Orlando Resort has always updated its offerings to match the biggest pop culture hits. Although some rides (like Jurassic Park River Adventure) have had impressively long runs, others, even some visitor favorites, are fated to eventually make their final trip around the track.

Some high-profile closings at Universal Studios in Orlando are the 2012 shuttering of the Jaws attraction and the 2007 closure of Back to the Future: The Ride. Another major closing was the 2002 discontinuation of Kongfrontation, based on the 1976 King Kong movie.

Universal’s Rip Ride Rockit, a coaster notable for the fact that it allowed riders to choose the music they would hear on their ride, closed today after speeding through its final run (at 65 miles per hour) last night. On the coaster’s final day, staff handed out guitar picks to all riders.

3 Reasons Breaking Bad Actor Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody 2 Should Be On Your Watchlist
Image
Reasons To Watch Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody 2 ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Bob Odenkirk, best known for his iconic portrayal of Saul Goodman in the cult series Breaking Bad and its acclaimed spinoff Better Call Saul, is back in action. His next film, Nobody 2, the sequel to the 2021 action thriller Nobody, hits theaters tomorrow on August 15, 2025. Here are three reasons why Nobody 2 should be on your watchlist.

1. Talented Indonesian Director

Nobody 2 is helmed by talented Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto, known for his expertise in high-intensity action. Earlier in his career, he collaborated with his brother Kimo Stamboel on three critically praised films – Macabre (2009), Killers (2014), and Headshot (2016). The latter, in particular, earned praise for its brutal, fast-paced action sequences, a signature style that’s set to play a key role in Nobody 2, as seen in the sequel’s trailer.

Having already raced ahead of some popular 2025 releases like Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and Sinners, F1: The Movie is now closing in on another major milestone – surpassing a blockbuster monster movie. Here’s how much more F1 needs to earn to outgross it.

J.R.R. Tolkien Unknowingly Helped Andy Serkis Lock a 2011 Million-Dollar Role

Peter Jackson‘s iconic live-action The Lord of the Rings trilogy, adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, was the golden ticket to Hollywood stardom for Andy Serkis, including getting him titular roles in legacy IPs like King Kong (2005) and the 2011 reboot of Planet of the Apes.

The three blockbuster franchises helped Serkis build a reputation unlike any other in the industry. His roles as Gollum, Kong, and Caesar were crystallized in the annals of Hollywood history as immediate classics, and no other actor, performer, or entertainer has been able to come close to touching his legacy in physically and vocally re-enacting such impossible characters.

And it all began with J.R.R. Tolkien, the master craftsman of the Middle-earth universe, and his infamous tome of literary series, The Lord of the Rings.

‘Godzilla x Kong: Supernova’ Star Shares Surprising First Comments About the Sequel [Exclusive]
Image
The MonsterVerse just got a little more delightful thanks to Matthew Modine, who offered fans a playful behind-the-scenes peek at the making of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova during a panel at FanX's Tampa Bay Comic Convention this weekend. Appearing alongside Stranger Things co-star David Harbour, Modine couldn’t resist sharing his own brand of kaiju-induced existential comedy with Collider's Maggie Lovitt — and yes, it turns out he joined the movie for one very wholesome reason. “I just worked in Godzilla x King Kong: Supernova,” Modine said with a grin. “That was pretty exciting. Oh, to work with Godzilla.”

The Oscar-nominated actor — who joins a stacked cast including Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Stevens, Delroy Lindo, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Sam Neill — reflected on what it means to be a grown-up playing pretend, especially when the co-stars you're acting opposite are skyscraper-sized monsters rendered entirely in VFX.

The 15 Best Adventure Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The adventure genre is one that has been thrilling audiences ever since the birth of the cinematic medium, from pulp literary adaptations to action-packed blockbusters filling theaters every summer. These stories are often set in exotic locales, with hardened protagonists on some sort of quest into the unknown. Compared to more conventional action movies, adventure films are about their environments as much as the high-octane thrills. And given the flexibility of the genre, adventure movies can bridge into fantasy, science fiction, and even horror on occasion.

What keeps the adventure genre consistent is a clear sense of escapism, imbuing its popcorn set pieces with a rousing sense of fun. Whether it's uncovering buried treasure or embarking on an epic voyage, that invigorating narrative sensibility remains front and center as adventure movies whisk their audiences away to parts unknown. Here are...

Before Superman, Nathan Fillion And James Gunn Teamed Up For This Sci-Fi Horror Comedy
Image
Some things just go together perfectly, like peanut butter and jelly, coffee and cherry pie, and Nathan Fillion and James Gunn. The Canadian-American actor and American writer/director/co-ceo of DC Studios have been working together for decades on all kinds of projects, including Gunn's recent big screen kick-off for his DC Universe, "Superman." In "Superman," written and directed by Gunn, Fillion plays Green Lantern Guy Gardner, a very different version of the DC hero than the one many fans know and love, Hal Jordan. (Fillion previously voiced Jordan in multiple direct-to-home-media DC animated movies, but the live-action role at the time went to his former "Two Guys and a Girl" co-star Ryan Reynolds instead.)

In fact, Fillion has starred in more Gunn projects than just about anyone, save maybe Gunn's own brother Sean Gunn, going all the way back to the director's 2005 feature debut, "Slither." "Slither" is a...

Director Peter Jackson Hid An Easter Egg From His Best Horror Movie In King Kong
Image
Following the success of his "Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy adaptation, director Peter Jackson was Hollywood's shiniest golden boy in the early 2000s. He had made millions upon millions of dollars, jumpstarted the New Zealand tourism industry (where the "Rings" films were shot), revolutionized special effects, and racked up 17 Oscars (collectively). He could seemingly do no wrong. So, as a follow-up, Jackson was pretty much allowed to make whatever he wanted and at whatever budget he desired. His dream project, as it turned out, was to remake Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack's 1933 classic "King Kong." Only this time, Jackson would indulge in every stray impulse and allow his movie to take every possible aside.

Jackson's "King Kong" ended up costing about $207 million and ran a whopping 187 minutes (whereas the original film was only 100 minutes long). It took a very long time for the main characters to arrive on Kong's Skull Island,...

A Lord Of The Rings Actor Wanted To Make A Fantastic Four Movie With A Pop Star
Image
From 2001 to 2003, Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" movies dominated the pop culture landscape. Jackson famously shot all three films at the same time, and they were all released within one year of each other, inspiring pundits and critics to rethink the way long-running movie franchises were going to be made going forward. In the Before Times, studios usually wouldn't plan out multiple sequels at the same time, instead waiting for one film to make its money before starting a conversation about the next. However, between the "Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter" movies, the conversation changed in the 2000s. From then on, multipart film series could be pitched en masse. This, in turn, led directly to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, et al.

Because his "Rings" flicks were so revolutionary, Jackson was given carte blanche to make whatever movie he wanted as his follow-up project. Perhaps weirdly, he chose to remake Marien C.

Daily Actorle Solution for Today

Going by the basic definition of the word “routine” that dictionaries have to offer, I can now claim I have made a routine of training my brain through daily puzzles every morning. And Actorle, without a doubt, stays my favorite, and will remain as so as long as it keeps testing my Hollywood knowledge to its absolute limit.

The set of Actorle challenges on July 24 was particularly intriguing to go through. The daily puzzles site offers you four different games to play: Actorle, Fill The Grid, Storyboard, and StarWords. Jurassic World Rebirth Swiftly Takes Down Peter Jackson's Monster Epic In Less Than A Month
Image
As Jurassic World Rebirth continues to stomp through the box office, it just passed another monster epic. Rebirth has earned some positive reviews, with ScreenRant's Mary Kassel calling it the franchise's "most meaningful movie in years," while praising the performances from Jonathan Bailey (Dr. Henry Loomis), Mahershala Ali (Duncan Kincaid), and Scarlett Johansson (Zora Bennett).

According to a report by Variety, Rebirth took the #2 spot at the box office this weekend, earning $23 million domestically after a 43% drop. With that total, it has earned $276 million domestically and $647 million globally. It is only in its third week at the box office and has been facing off against strong competition.

This total does help Rebirth defeat another major competitor, as it has officially earned more than Peter Jackson's own monster movie. Rebirth beat King Kong (2005), which ushered in just $218 million domestically and $557 million worldwide in its lifetime. Rebirth has earned nearly $100 million more,...

Jurassic World Rebirth Stomps Past Peter Jackson's 20-Year-Old Creature Feature With 84% on Rt at the Box Office
Image
Jurassic World Rebirth marks the seventh entry in the Jurassic Park universe. Overall, the dinosaur franchise has been an extremely successful film series, and its success continues.

2025 has been a Russian roulette for many films out there, with some projects failing to reach their full potential. However, that is not the case for Jurassic World Rebirth, although the new entry has had mixed reviews from critics. Rebirth has just overtaken Peter Jackson's creature feature King Kong two decades later, both at the domestic and international box office, as its haul indicates on The Numbers.

Jurassic World Rebirth serves as a sequel to 2022's Jurassic World Dominion, although it features a brand-new cast. The film is set five years after the Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard-led action film, and it features a world in which the recently released dinosaurs have started dying off in different climates, except in a few select regions.

Godzilla Franchise Update Reveals Toho Is Pushing For Two Sequels, Including One For A Recent $113M Oscar Winner
Image
Toho is planning sequels to multiple Godzilla movies. Toho is a Japanese production company that is best known for the Godzilla franchise, which follows a giant irradiated lizard who is alternately depicted as a rampaging avatar of destruction or a valiant hero who defends humanity from other monsters.

Altogether, there are 33 Japanese Godzilla movies and five English-language installments, four of which are part of Legendary's Monsterverse, which also features monsters and locations from the King Kong movies.

Per Bloomberg, after distributing 2023's Godzilla Minus One themselves and earning $116 million worldwide against a slim reported budget of just $15 million, Toho is pushing to own more of its content. This includes the planned sequel to Godzilla Minus One, which is currently in development.

However, Toho's international head Koji Ueda also revealed that, in addition to the upcoming Godzilla Minus One 2, Toho's plans include a follow-up to 2016's Shin Godzilla and...

‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Pushes Peter Jackson’s $200 Million Blank Check Blockbuster Into Extinction at Global Box Office
Image
You could almost imagine a spec script for one of the new MonsterVerse movies being refashioned into a Jurassic World adventure. Had the two properties been owned by the same studio, they'd have already been mashed-up for a mega-budget spectacular. But a clash of the titans took place at the box office regardless, with Jurassic World Rebirth overtaking Peter Jackson's first film after the grand success of his seminal Lord of the Rings trilogy. Jackson's series ended with his The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, sweeping every category it was nominated in at the Oscars, and grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide. And, unlike other filmmakers who've scaled down after spending so much time on elaborate productions, Jackson utilized his blank check by making a passion project: King Kong.

The old-fashioned adventure film featured Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, and Jack Black in the central roles, and...

Joe Dante has sold his Citizen Kane sled for over $14m
Image
Gremlins director Joe Dante has sold Rosebud – the sled from Orson Welles’ classic, Citizen Kane – at auction for over $14m.

Joe Dante, the director of Gremlins, Piranha, Matinee and too many other wonderful films to list, certainly seems like the kind of person who’d collect movie memorabilia. But did you know that, for about 30 years, he owned the famous sled, Rosebud, from Citizen Kane? This writer certainly didn’t.

The headline rather gives this away, but Dante recently sold the piece of memorabilia – first seen in Orson Welles’ 1941 classic – at auction for $14.75m.

What’s even more jaw-dropping than that huge sum of money is how Dante acquired the sled in the first place. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker was shooting his 1985 sci-fi adventure Explorers on the Paramount lot when one of the crew members came up to him and asked if he wanted the old wooden prop.

15 Actors Who Never Watch Their Own Movies
Image
It might be easy to assume that actors are self-centered and love watching their own movies, but for a lot of the biggest stars in Hollywood, that's actually not the case. Not only do some actors hate watching themselves on screen, but they even make active efforts to avoid having to at all costs. Suffice it to say, you won't catch them rolling up to an AMC Theatres on the midnight premiere of their latest flick. At most, they'll probably have seen it while doing Adr (automated dialogue replacement) or bringing along clips during the project's press tour.

There's a lot of reasons why actors prefer not to watch their own movies. Some actors hated working with their directors so much that they essentially disown their own projects, while others simply just struggle with seeing their face and voice projected 25 feet tall. Whatever the reason, these 15 actors, when they can,...

Angelina Jolie's First Major Movie Was A Panned Sci-Fi Sequel
Image
Everyone's got to start somewhere, and that somewhere ain't necessarily got to be pretty. Take Tom Cruise, for example. He made his film acting debut in Franco Zeffirelli's teen romance "Endless Love," an avalanche of ick notable for its Diana Ross/Lionel Richie theme song and notorious for the scene where Shirley Knight's bohemian mother watches approvingly from the top of a staircase as her 15-year-old daughter (Brooke Shields) has firelit sex with her 17-year-old boyfriend (Martin Hewitt). Somehow, Cruise survived this association with one of the most atrociously awful movies of the 1980s to become one of the world's biggest movie stars.

On the less scandalous end of the spectrum, Paul Newman's first movie was the biblical epic "The Silver Chalice," for which he received mostly lousy reviews. Jessica Lange was ridiculed for conjuring the ghost of Carole Lombard to play a daffy starlet in the 1976 remake of "King Kong.

‘Too Much’ Cast and Character Guide: Who’s Who in Lena Dunham’s New Netflix Show?
Image
Lena Dunham is making her TV return with “Too Much,” loosely based on her own experience moving to London and meeting her husband, British musician Luis Felber.

With Dunham deciding not to star in “Too Much,” “Hacks” breakout Megan Stalter stars as Jessica, who meets indie musician Felix, played by “The White Lotus” Season 2 star Will Sharpe. Don’t worry, though, Dunham still appears on-screen as Jessica’s sister, who’s dealing with her own issues in her marriage (her husband is played by “Girls” star Andrew Rannells).

There are plenty of other “Girls” and “Camping” casting Easter Eggs in “Too Much,” with a slew of A-listers popping into the Netflix romcom series, including Naomi Watts, Jessica Alba, Rita Ora and Andrew Scott, among others.

People who were definitely not sexists and racists told her she’d never get her big break due to sexism and racism: “They told me my career would die mid-30s. First of all, they told me a Mexican is never going to make it because at the time … it was impossible for a Mexican to have a leading role in Hollywood. I was told so many times it couldn’t happen, and I almost believed them, but I fought it and I won.”

Jurassic World Rebirth Finds A Surprising New Meaning For The Franchise's Dinosaurs
Image
In Steven Spielberg's groundbreaking 1993 blockbuster "Jurassic Park," the billionaire behind the titular hoped-for attraction, John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), is practically buzzing with giddy anticipation at how successful his venture will likely become. He crows that his team who helped bring dozens of extinct species of dinosaurs back to life "spared no expense," and that everything in the park boasts "absolutely spectacular designs." Although the small group of experts Hammond has invited to tour the park are indeed impressed with what he's done, having strong emotional responses to the sights of actual living dinosaurs walking the Earth, they begin to have serious doubts as reality begins to set in. Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) sums up the potential folly of Jurassic Park succinctly: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."

"Jurassic Park," both the first movie and Michael Crichton's source novel,...

The Classic Monster Movie That Almost Starred Meryl Streep
Image
Hollywood has always been a boy's club. Worse than that, it's been a haven of sexual abuse. The town has buildings and theaters named after the likes of Columbia Pictures co-founder Harry Cohn and 20th Century Fox co-founder Daryl F. Zanuck, both of whom were notorious for coercing (or attempting to coerce) female stars into sex in exchange for work. For all of the breathtakingly gifted women who made it through Hollywood's sexist gauntlet to become movie stars, you can't help but wonder how many singular talents got destroyed by the town's monstrous gatekeepers.

Because talent truly didn't matter to these ghouls. They just wanted, in their view, a dazzling dame who could light up the screen with their looks and sign a contract nowhere near commensurate with their value to the studio. Some of the women in their employ could stand up to them. Joan Crawford once shut Cohn down by saying,...

Jurassic World Rebirth Completely Wastes Its Coolest New Idea
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Jurassic World Rebirth."

Plenty of filmmakers have been able to leave their unique stamp on all number of movie monsters, but few have held as much of a stronghold on a singular creature than Steven Spielberg with dinosaurs. 1993's "Jurassic Park" built upon the previous incarnations of these prehistoric beasts in films like Harry O. Hoyt's "The Lost World," "King Kong" and "One Million Years B.C" by way of technological wizardry we're still attempting to recapture. The mix of practical effects and innovative leaps in computer-generated imagery helped establish a world in which dinosaurs were these beautiful, terrifying, and, most importantly, tangible creatures. It was as if Stan Winston, Phil Tippett and the talented folks at Ilm plucked these extinct forces of nature from out of time.

As far as Universal was concerned, they essentially held claim to the definitive screen dinosaurs that every...

Italy Cheers Hollywood Walk of Fame Status for Original ‘Django’ Star Franco Nero and Carlo Rambaldi Who Created Iconic E.T. Character
Image
Italy is celebrating scoring a rare double whammy in the selection for the Hollywood Walk of Fame class of 2026 list.

Along with Timothée Chalamet, Demi Moore, and Miley Cyrus, the 35-name list – announced by The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday – includes both Spaghetti Westerns icon Franco Nero and special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi who is best known for creating the iconic E.T. character for Steven Spielberg’s “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.”

Italian undersecretary for culture Lucia Borgonzoni in a statement underlined Italy’s pride in the rare double honors for non U.S. talents and thanked marketing guru Tiziana Rocca, who is artistic director of Italy’s Taormina and Filming Italy festivals, for mounting the campaign that led to Nero getting a Hollywood star.

Nero, who gained worldwide fame in Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 classic Spaghetti Western “Django,” has since appeared in over 200 movies and TV shows, working with directors such as John Huston,...

One Thing Makes Jurassic World Rebirth Different From Star Wars And Godzilla, According To Gareth Edwards [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Prior to his work on "Jurassic World Rebirth," director Gareth Edwards might be most easily described as the "Star Wars" guy and the "Godzilla" guy -- though he has far, far greater ambitions than that. Originally a visual effects artist before making the jump to feature films, his unique background provided him with a career path that turned out to be perfectly suited for big-budget Hollywood blockbusters. This skillset is apparent even in his original features, such as 2010's aptly-named kaiju flick "Monsters" and especially his ambitious movie "The Creator" from a couple years back. To nobody's surprise, however, he's also found himself at the helm of several major IP plays, from 2014's underrated "Godzilla" to "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" to the latest installment in the "Jurassic" franchise.

Whatever you do, just don't call Edwards a "journeyman." Few filmmakers know the advantages and perils of taking on ambitious...

Jurassic World Rebirth Director Gareth Edwards Had One 'Secret Weapon' During Filming [Exclusive]
Image
For a movie that came together as quickly as "Jurassic World Rebirth," it helps to have an ace up your sleeve to help keep things on the tracks. In many ways, Gareth Edwards is the perfect kind of director to bring in on a blockbuster like this, one that's heavy on visual effects, requires a dizzying sense of scale and awe, and takes direct inspiration from genre giants like Steven Spielberg. For the guy who helped put his stamp on franchises like "Godzilla" and "Star Wars" in recent years, well, taking the plunge into the "Jurassic" sandbox felt like the natural next step. Luckily, he didn't have to go it alone. In fact, he had the benefit of arguably the biggest creative force in the franchise outside of Spielberg himself.

The final results of "Rebirth" may not have lived up to the pre-release hype, as I wrote in my review for /Film here,...

‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Review: Thrilling, Clever Summer Movie Delivers the Goods
Image
For whatever reason, the “Jurassic World” (née “Park”) series is the cinematic equivalent of a cheeseburger. The attraction seems pretty self-explanatory on paper, as they’re all what-if adventure films about dinosaurs existing in our modern-day. Film history-wise, they stem from the tradition of the special-effects monster movie — Steven Spielberg’s first two entries in the series make explicit reference to “King Kong.” Although the “Jurassic” films hew close to “Kong” as well as films like “The Lost World” (1925), and “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms,” they also contain some outrageous elements borrowed from Japanese kaiju movies, specifically the “Godzilla” franchise. Thus, the “Jurassic” series feels like America’s answer to kaiju, years before a US version of “Godzilla” got off the ground.

Director Gareth Edwards (the director of the second American “Godzilla”) began his filmmaking career playing “what if?” with kaiju tropes in his 2010 feature “Monsters,” and it’s that movie which Edwards’ latest film,...

Double Talk: The History of the DVD Commentary
Image
And a DVD is… To start at the very beginning- a very good place to start, I’ve been made to understand- we actually need to go back even further. Not to DVDs, but to LaserDiscs. In 1977, VHS was a revelation. At the time, home entertainment usually meant dinner conversation, a good book, or a dinner conversation about a good book. But VHS made in-residence movie magic possible. It triumphed over Betamax (that would be going too far back), cornering the market and establishing itself as the primary format for watching films at home. But only a year later, in 1978, something stranger arrived: LaserDisc. That same year brought a new pope and the first Home Depot. Amid this chaos came a shiny disc called “McA DiscoVision.” LaserDisc was all optical: it read movies with a laser, unlike VHS, which relied on magnetic tape. Though the DVD wouldn’t be introduced...

Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning says specific scenes look as if they were shot by a robot to bring The Grid to the next level
Image
When people think of advancements in special effects in Hollywood, they typically think of movies like 1933’s King Kong, Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, and James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, to name a few. However, old heads of Hollywood remember another film that helped change the visual game, Disney’s Tron. The Steven Lisberger-directed science-fiction adventure dazzled audiences with state-of-the-art digital effects, paving the way for VFX in film to show moviegoers things they’d never thought possible on the silver screen. Disney upped their game again in 2010 with Tron: Legacy, and soon, Joachim Rønning will level up the Tron Universe with Tron: Ares, coming to theaters on October 10, 2025.

The latest issue of Empire Magazine is pulling the curtain back on Tron: Ares with an in-depth discussion about filming techniques with the film’s director, Joachim Rønning. According to Rønning, Ilm (Industrial Light & Magic) treats Ares as “the Holy Grail of computer graphics.
