Ashwini is from a low economic family . Her step mother Shubha becomes promiscuous thanx to her dwindling income with no way out . Her drunk father is a wastrel. She is in love with a simple nice person who helps her out many times. Her boss tries to molest her a couple of times and when she refuses to give in , throws her out of her small job.
A family friend promises to get her a job and takes her to a big city . She is sold to a brother . Life takes many turns . She meets all kinds of men and women . Most characters are predictable . The poignant sad stories of these girls are told in a haunting manner. Unni Mary comes as a practical girl who drills sense in Ashiwni's head . She defends this profession despite its many hazards . There is no way out as most are from unstable back grounds . Ashwini slowly resigns to her fate . In the end ,her old lover comes back and wishes to take her back even after knowing her full story . She refuses to go back to him but he too refuses to relent .
She commits suicide to avoid going with him and creating more scandal in his life .
The ending should have been better. If she goes with him to start life afresh many in this profession who watch this movie would be encouraged and given a fresh lease. The entire movie belongs to Ashwini who wears sarees all the time showing her domestic nature . Angel faced Pramila comes in a small role as a Madam . All those here are very practical and accept this status in society .
