Every year, Hollywood pumps out at least one or two musician biopics. Last year alone saw the release of "Back to Black," a portrait of the late Amy Winehouse, and the Oscar-nominated "A Complete Unknown," the Bob Dylan origin story as told by James Mangold. It's easy to understand why we keep getting these films: they're pretty popular. Sure, some of them flop, but more often than not, there seems to be an insatiable hunger from the public to watch actors slap on a wig and do an impression of a famous singer. And studios are often all-in because not only are there box office dollars at work, but if filmmakers and actors play their cards right, awards season glory comes calling.

Jamie Foxx has inked a multi-year deal with Fox Entertainment Studios, giving the network first-look rights to scripted television material from Foxx’s Foxxhole Productions banner, and exclusive rights to his projects and producing services in the unscripted space.
Foxx already has a slate of scripted and unscripted projects in progress and will begin developing them with Fox Entertainment Studios immediately. The agreement builds on Foxx’s long-standing relationship with the network — he currently hosts the music game show “Beat Shazam” alongside his daughter Corinne Foxx, and he executive produces the police procedural “Alert: Missing Persons Unit.”
Foxx and Fox go way back — the Oscar winner had his breakout role on the network’s sketch comedy series “In Living Color,” from 1991 to 1994. Foxx then went on to create and star in “The Jamie Foxx Show” on the WB Network.

Tazewell’s “Wicked” victory makes him the first Black man to win for costume and only the second Black person to do so since Ruth E. Carter‘s 2023 victory for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which followed her history-making 2019 win for “Black Panther.” The only other Black person to be Oscar-nominated for costume design is Sharen Davis, who earned nods in 2005 for “Ray” and in 2007 for “Dreamgirls.”

The Star Wars franchise has been nominated for a total of 37 Academy Awards throughout its unique history at the Oscars. Many of the nominations and wins have been centered around sound and visual effects. However, only two films have received nominations for film editing.
The original movie, A New Hope, received both the nomination and win in 1977. Paul Hirsch, Richard Chew, and Marcia Lucas, George Lucas's wife at the time, all took home the award. It was a film that broke a lot of ground in film editing techniques and was well received for its work in the category.
Marcia Lucas was also nominated for George Lucas' 1973 film, American Graffiti. Chew was nominated in 1976 for his film editing work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Hirsch received a nomination for his work in 2004 for the Ray Charles biopic, Ray.

James Marsden is looking to make his biopic debut — and has his sights set on Mickey Blue Eyes.
“Paradise” actor Marsden told The Post that he aspires to portray Frank Sinatra onscreen in a feature similar to Oscar-winning 2004 Ray Charles biopic “Ray.”
“To do a biopic like what Jamie Foxx did with Ray Charles would be a lot of fun,” Marsden said. “I would love to. And you’re actually using your singing voice, as well.”
Marsden previously sang in 2007 films “Enchanted” and “Hairspray,” the latter of which Marsden deemed to be like a “Broadway show” to film. He added that “Hairspray” was a “joyous” production akin to attending a “party.” Perhaps a Sinatra biopic could be the same.

For eight seasons, "Monk" struck that perfect balance between hard-cracking detective work and comedy. Police procedurals were a dime a dozen in the early 2000s, but the thing to set this one apart from its contemporaries was the fact the titular Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) dealt with obsessive-compulsive disorder. This fueled his 312 phobias, which occasionally got in the way of him solving cases, but they also allowed him to view the world in a unique way that would help him solve various crimes.
"Monk" ended in 2009, but fans got one last fix thanks to 2023's made-for-Peacock movie, "Mr. Monk's Last Case," which /Film called "an overdue reunion" with much of the central cast reprising their roles. But it's not like the cast was kept in stasis for 13 years between the show's ending and the reunion. Many of them went on to other things, filling out their filmographies with myriad other projects.

Kevin Feige recently talked about how there were times when he had to make sure something was cut from a script so that it did not make it to the final product. More often than not it’s because it would distract from the main plot, like it almost did with one dialogue in a Thor-centric film.

The Academy Awards committee recently announced their 2025 nominations for the Best Actor category. And boy oh boy, is it going to be cut-throat with the likes of Ralph Fiennes and Timothée Chalamet competing against each other. But talk of fierce competition and we’re often reminded of the 77th Academy Awards, where Jamie Foxx was pitted against veterans like Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood, and Johnny Depp.

Despite losing the supporting actor category (which seemed rather easy to win) Jamie Foxx turned the tables and took home the coveted award for Best Actor, leaving DiCaprio, Depp, and Eastwood in the dirt.

FKA twigs’s debut album, 2014’s LP1, wasn’t a total reinvention of R&b as much as it was a sensory-driven variation on the genre, with an ear toward British electronic music—primarily dub, glitch, and U.K. bass. twigs is a detail-oriented soundscaper and consummate singer who makes compelling left-of-center pop music, regardless of notions of trailblazing. In that sense, her latest album, Eusexua, continually reminds you of LP1.
Where twigs’s debut moved like molasses, though, Eusexua is mostly a briskly paced techno album. It’s propulsive and fun, but, like LP1, it’s wrapped in anguish. On “Sticky,” twigs sings, “I tried to fuck you with the lights on/In the hope you’d think I’m open,” a call-back to “Lights On.”
The artist’s new preoccupations, still presented with an angsty yearning, are all over Eusexua. The album’s concept is purportedly about transcending one’s human form,...

Jamie Foxx’s career is a story of versatility and transformation. Starting out in comedy, he made a name for himself with Roc (1991) and later became the star of his very own sitcom, The Jamie Foxx Show (1996). As his television career grew, Foxx started to break away from his comedic roots and shifted towards more dramatic roles in film. His talent for balancing both comedy and drama set him apart in Hollywood, establishing him as a multifaceted actor.
By the early 2000s, Foxx had already proven his skill in various genres, including action with his role as Max in Collateral (2004), and drama with his role as Drew Brown in Ali (2001). Yet, his biggest break came when he took on a complex role that pushed the boundaries of his acting range. The biopic has been a genre around since the early days of filmmaking, and over the course of more than 100 hundred years, it has changed drastically with every passing decade. In the early 2000s the genre, in particular the musical biopic, hit somewhat of a snag. It got caught up in formulaic storytelling and became a parody of itself. So much so that the 2007 film Walk Hard, made fun of the formula so much it ruined the genre forever. However, some films still missed the joke and went ahead and followed the formula anyway, such as 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The formula itself reduced the artist’s life to their Wikipedia page. Samuel L. Jackson’s 2012 Western movie co-star thinks the oft-snubbed actor should have received an Oscar for his performance in the Quentin Tarantino film. The veteran film star seems like he should have a whole trophy-case full of Academy Awards by now, but to date, Jackson has received only one in-competition Oscar nomination, his single trophy coming in 2021 when he received an honorary award for his body of work.
The list of Jackson movies that should have earned him an Oscar, or at least a nomination, is very long indeed. He received his first trip to the nominees' table for 1994’s Pulp Fiction, losing on Oscar night. Jackson has given many other acclaimed performances over the years - in movies like Jungle Fever, Jackie Brown, A Time to Kill, The Caveman’s Valentine, Coach Carter, The Hateful Eight, and others - but those showings did not sway the Academy enough to wrrant even a nomination.

We are living in the golden age of the rock biopic. Until very recently, films like The Doors, Ray, Walk the Line, and Love and Mercy popped up only once every few years. But in roughly the past half-decade alone, we’ve seen Bohemian Rhapsody, Bob Marley: One Love, Back to Black, Rocketman, Respect, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and Elvis. This past Christmas, we got the story of Bob Dylan, A Complete Unknown, and Better Man, in which an anthropomorphic chimpanzee “plays” Robbie Williams. And in the coming months and years,...

Netflix is losing a Top Gun-esque movie starring Jamie Foxx and Jessica Biel. While the streaming service is known for original movies and TV shows including Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, Wednesday, Carry-On, and Leave the World Behind, their library is also populated with titles that are licensed from other companies. As these licensing agreements expire or change quite often, every month there are usually quite a few titles either joining or leaving Netflix.
The Top Gun-inspired movie that is departing the platform soon is one of these licensed titles, and it is particularly star-studded. Jamie Foxx is a well known multihyphenate who is a stand-up comedian and musician along with being a decorated actor, having won an Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 musical biopic Ray. He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor that same year for his work in Collateral.

The BAFTA Fellowship recognizes those who have made an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television. Davis is just the latest in a long line of luminaries to receive the honor, the most recent being actress Samantha Morton last year.

Behind every great man, as the old, outdated expression goes, there’s a great woman — and there’s a pretty decent chance she’s been played by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
The 55-year-old actress has built a long, inspiring career out of portraying characters who linger just off center stage: the long-suffering wife of Cuba Gooding Jr.’s Navy Seal in 2000’s Men of Honor; Ray Charles’ mistress in Jamie Foxx’s 2004 biopic Ray; Yusef Salaam’s mother in 2019’s When They See Us (her first Emmy nomination); and Venus and Serena Williams’ mom in the 2021 Will Smith film about their dad, King Richard (her first Oscar nom).
“If we only know the figurehead and we don’t know the women who were doing the groundwork, it’s not the full truth,” she tells THR. “We’d be telling a half story.”

But with a nod for his new standup special What Had Happened Was, Jamie Foxx returned to the stage and the red carpet, stopping to share more insights into the mysterious “medical complication” that halted his career.
Even though Jamie Foxx opened up greatly about his health issue— which he suffered while making Back in Action in 2023 — in the Netflix special, he had no problems continuing to do so on the Golden Globes red carpet, telling Variety that his family helped guided him through the moment. “I say this all the time. Warning: Some Spoilers lie ahead for I Know What You Did Last Summer!
The '90s marked a revolutionary shift for the horror genre as filmmakers started to focus on the slasher formula, thanks in large part to Scream's success. One of the keys to that movie's success was writer Kevin Williamson, who not only went on to pen its direct sequel, but also found success with 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer. Unfortunately, that success is far more of a financial one than a critical one, and some 27 years later, it's pretty clear why reviewers weren't so kind to it.
Loosely based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel I Know What You Did Last Summer, this 1997 slasher follows a group of friends who, after covering up a car accident, are stalked by a killer wielding a hook. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Freddie Prinze Jr.,...

What do the Golden Globes love more than a juicy dramatic performance? A juicy dramatic performance that sings.
From Austin Butler to Renée Zellweger, the Globes have long rewarded actors not known for their musical abilities who decided to show off their chops on screen in biopics. This year, that historical trend could boost the chances of two nominees: Timothée Chalamet for Best Film Drama Actor in A Complete Unknown and Angelina Jolie for Best Film Drama Actress in Maria.
In A Complete Unknown, Chalamet plays Bob Dylan. The film follows the legendary singer-songwriter from January 1961, when he moves from Minnesota to New York City, to his 1965 concert at the Newport Folk Festival, where he notoriously introduces electric instruments. Chalamet does all of his own singing in the film, refusing to lip-synch along to Dylan’s original recordings. As of today, the actor ranks second with 4/1 odds.
In Maria, Jolie plays Maria Callas.

Taylor Hackford's "Ray," the 2004 biography that chronicles the life of legendary musician Ray Charles, closely follows the conventions of the genre. It wears its sentimentality on its sleeve, the kind that often accompanies biographical portraits of geniuses, and uses embellishments to heighten its dramatic stakes. Despite these genre trappings, "Ray" emerges as a soulful, spirited drama because of Jamie Foxx's central performance, which oozes charisma. Foxx disappears into the role of the titular boundary-pushing artist, bringing the eccentricities of the man to life to convincing ends. The success of "Ray" can also undoubtedly be attributed to Foxx, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his work in the film. Apart from being nominated in more than five categories at the Academy Awards, "Ray" also won an Oscar for Best Sound Mixing (which is clearly deserved).

Let’s face it. Theatre has been the most successful place for stories about popular musicians. Alicia Keys’ “Hell’s Kitchen” is selling big on Broadway, as is “Mj.” “A Beautiful Noise,” about Neil Diamond ‘s professional and personal history, had a nice run there, and is touring the country after its run in Los Angeles. We’ve had “Tina,” “Jersey Boys,” The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud,” Carole King’s “Beautiful” and others. A new musical is being tested now about Frank Sinatra. But the most exciting news arrives this spring, when recent Tony winner Jonathan Groff portrays Bobby Darin.
But movies about musical stars? A mixed bag. (including Kevin Spacey in a bad one about Bobby Darin) Documentaries have been the safest form to chronicle the life of famous musicians: Ones about David Crosby, Joan Baez, Springsteen, and Linda Ronstadt. And, of course, “Woodstock” and Martin Scorsese’s “Last Waltz.

A common refrain amongst entertainment industry types is that it's a miracle any movie gets made. There are so many moving parts to any production, from ensuring the script has a story audiences will want to see to managing a crew of hundreds to get that story onto film. Even if the final product isn't great artistically, one has to admire the hard work from all of those professionals to get any movie made in the first place. And while a movie can go off the rails at any point, it's astonishing how many are pretty much finished and then just ... never come out.

In 2007, Jake Kasdan's hilarious "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" arrived to take the piss out of musician biopics. Focusing on the fictional Dewey Cox (played memorably by John C. Reilly), "Walk Hard" was a parody of the musician biopic in general, but specifically lambasted the then-recent films "Ray," Taylor Hackford's flick about Ray Charles, and "Walk the Line," James Mangold's look at the life of Johnny Cash. It was a brilliant, biting send-up of everything wrong with those films: the lazy shortcuts they take in condensing a famous person's entire life, the by-the-numbers approach to an artist's rise and fall and inevitable redemption, the seemingly endless parade of familiar supporting characters who pop up and have their full, famous names uttered out loud so we know who they are. The satire and parody of "Walk Hard" is so sharp, so cutting, that one can't help but...

While Will Smith leads the King Richard cast in his Oscar-winning role, there is a terrific ensemble working together to bring this true sports story to the big screen. Venus and Serena Williams’ names are iconic in the world of sports, but King Richard offers a slight twist in that it’s actually more about their father, Richard Williams, a tennis coach who tries to put his daughters’ talents on the world stage. While he is a complex and intriguing character, King Richard benefits from the entire cast.
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green from a screenplay by Zach Baylin, King Richard goes behind the scenes of Venus and Serena’s life under the guidance of their father. King Richard has a sprawling cast of veteran actors and younger actors who get to flex their talents in front of a wider audience. The film is based on real-life people, and here...

A rivalry is brewing at the upcoming Oscars, and there’s history on the line. Adrien Brody is a Best Actor contender for “The Brutalist,” but if he loses to Timothée Chalamet‘s performance in “A Complete Unknown,” he won’t just lose an Oscar. He’ll also lose his record as the youngest Best Actor champ of all time.

Brody was 29 years, 343 days old when he claimed Best Actor for “The Pianist” on March 23, 2003. That made him the first, and to date the only leading man under age 30 to win the Oscar. He broke the record that had been held by Richard Dreyfus, who was 30 years, 156 days old when he prevailed for “The Goodbye Girl.” Dreyfus held that record for 25 years, and now Brody has held the record for 21 years running.
