Steven Ungerleider, Documentary Producer and Co-Founder of Sidewinder Films, Dies at 73
Image
Steven Ungerleider, the author, sports psychologist and co-founder of Sidewinder Films, the label behind documentaries about the USA Gymnastics scandal, the 1972 Munich Olympics and Arthur Ashe, has died. He was 73.

Ungerleider died Saturday in Healdsburg, California, after an eight-month battle with pancreatic cancer, The Foundation for Global Sports Development announced. He founded the organization in 1996 to promote “accessible, fair and abuse-free sport for youth through grants, awards and educational projects.”

Ungerleider produced HBO’s At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal (2019), the Erin Lee Carr-directed film that focused on the sexual-abuse victims of convicted USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.

“Steven always fought for what was right, no matter what, especially advocating for those who had been wronged and silenced by institutional failures,” Foundation for Global Sports Development executive board member David Ulich said in a statement.

Ungerleider was nominated for an Emmy for his research on 2016’s Munich ’72 and Beyond,...

In an episode titled Graveyard of the Giant Beasts, Secrets of the Dead investigates which creature was the top predator in Colombia 58 million years ago. TV on Tap: Sean Hayes Joins “The Millers,” IFC Wants More “Spoils” and Morgan Fairchild Gets “Hot in Cleveland”
News

Laverne Cox has booked an appearance on Bravo’s upcoming series Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce. She’ll play a war reporter and Lgbt activist who appears at a marriage equality gala.

Sean Hayes has joined the cast of The Millers next season. He’ll play a new pal of Carol (Margo Martindale) whose presence annoys Carol’s son Nathan (Will Arnett). On one hand, seeing Margo Martindale and Sean Hayes sharing scenes sounds amazing. I’m just not sure it will be so amazing on The Millers, considering the episodes I’ve seen.

From Sean Saves the World to The Millers. Ohboy.

With its 100th episode here, TVLine looks back at the Pretty Little Liars‘s pilot episode. Ah, remember when Aria was the mature and worldly one?

Once again Louie dared visit a topic that TV has otherwise avoided by acknowledging that men use sex toys. Jokes about women’s vibrators have become commonplace, but a similar joke about men is acknowledging a truth that’s mostly ignored. It was a brilliant bit for the season opener, with the kind of brutal honesty that makes Louie one of TV’s best comedies.

Damon Wayans Jr. will be a series regular on the fourth season of New Girl. Now that that’s been taken care of, when can we get some kind of Happy Endings reunion?

JFK Assassination Coverage Churns Crowds For PBS
Marking the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination continues to cough up good numbers for TV networks, though, as with that old Fox one-off reality hit Alien Autopsy, it’s unclear whether viewers flocked to the “JFK” — he being our very first made-by-tv president – or the “assassination.” PBS tastefully went with “John F. Kennedy’s legendary charisma” by way of explanation this morning, while discussing the fact its early JFK-assassination programming has cumed nearly 12 million viewers. Related: The Day JFK Was Shot: 50 Years Later, Hollywood Remembers Across Monday and Tuesday last week, JFK — a two-night, four-hour American Experience special that focused on the president’s life and achievements, reached 8.6 million viewers and averaged 2.7 million of them, PBS said. But a Wednesday night Nova broadcast, Cold Case JFK, in which viewers watched contemporary forensic techniques applied to the 50-year-old murder, performed at a whopping 40% over the 9 Pm season-to-date average. That program averaged about 2.6 million viewers.

'Cold Case JFK,' 'Secrets of the Dead': JFK assassination anniversary specials
On Nov. 22, America marks the 50th anniversary of the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy - and television is giving viewers plenty to think about.

"Nova: Cold Case JFK" (PBS, Wednesday, Nov. 13): With a nod to the enduring conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination, the science series enlists modern investigators with state-of-the-art forensic tools to see if they can do a better job sorting out the evidence than was done in the '60s.

"Secrets of the Dead: JFK: One Pm Central Standard Time" (PBS, Wednesday): CBS news footage chronicles the assassination minute by minute, including Walter Cronkite's emotional report of Kennedy's death.

"Letters to Jackie: Remembering President Kennedy" (TLC, Nov. 17): Actors including Laura Linney and John Krasinski bring to life some of the condolence letters written to Jacqueline Kennedy after her husband's death.

“Burning Love” Takes on “The Bachelorette” and a “Tales from the Darkside” Revival
News

How did American Horror Story get its big upcoming guest-star? Ryan Murphy explains how it happened to EW, ” first I said, ‘I want to use you in the show.’ But she was very resistant because from the beginning of her career people who are in the Wiccan community had given her a hard time thinking she was a witch and she got a lot of scary fan letters. She didn’t like the darkness of that, and I explained to her the part and she’s like, ‘Aw f—, let’s just do it. Ok, I love it.’”

The CW is thinking of rebooting Tales from the Darkside, the iconic horror anthology series from the 80s. The project will involve Sleepy Hollow producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman along with Locke & Key writer Joe Hill. The reboot will try to follow the original format with half-hour standalone stories.

TV on Tap: Lisa Kudrow Returns to “Web Therapy”, Casey Wilson and Adam Pally Get “Offensive”
News

After months of waiting for a decision on the drama’s fate, ABC Family has cancelled Bunheads. I’m disappointed but at least now there’s no chance of the show wearing out its welcome. On the bright side, Deadline says this means the channel is free to go ahead and renew its freshmen series Twisted and The Fosters.

There Are Fewer "Secrets Of The Dead" Than You'd Expect
Secrets of the Dead is a collection of three documentaries from PBS including “Death on the Railroad,” “Caveman Cold Case,” and “Bugging Hitler's Soldiers.” Each documentary was produced by a different team of writers and filmmakers with the only common thread through each film being narration by Jay O. Sanders and a ridiculous opening credits sequence that inspires more laughter than fear.

The first segment follows a cold case from 1832 of Irish immigrants who were assumed killed by a cholera outbreak but might have actually been murdered. The second segment explores the possibility of cannibal Neanderthals and examines a tomb full of Neanderthal remains. The third and best segment features shockingly frank conversations between some of Hitler's top officers who were held as POWs by the British. The British government covertly recorded their conversations, some of which had not been made public until this documentary.
