Patricia Bruder breaks up with Buzz Martin by accepting a date with Eddie Applegate. She's tiring of his flash temper and non-stop clowning. Applegate is a nice guy who works hard after school and has bought a car with his savings. He's captain of the football team, while Martin has resigned after spending the last game on the bench. His father lectures him. His mother can't get through to him.
In other words, Martin is a teenager. He lacks the experience, and a level of hormones that's regular enough to maintain a constant and rational view of the world. As a result, he sometimes doe crazy things. And that's with him being, by and large, a good kid.
That's my conclusion, by the way. The movie ends with his doing the crazy thing, and leaving it as a problem for the audience. Good luck to them, since they're probably teenagers themselves.
