    Needs A Stronger Editor

Leon Mathot is the head of the local gendarmerie. He's been ordered to end the smuggling led by Charles Vanel. He will offer them an amnesty if they stop..... but if they refuse, he's to kill them all. He rides to Vanel's home, to find he's not in. He'll stay the night. But then they discover his name in his hatband; it's the same as his cousin, who killed Vanel's brother.... the father of Simone Vaudry. She knows what she must do, but she has fallen in love with the cool-headed Mathot.

The copy that I looked at is in marvelous shape, with several shots tinted, and only a few seconds of damage early on. I really wanted to like this movie, which has ia good cast, writers who include Julien Duvivier, and interesting shots of the rocks in the district. But those shots go on and on.... as do the scenes of people glaring at each other.... and various other scenes, making me think this could have used a very stern editor. While the story is a good one in its basics, it's not ornamented enough to make it worth its length.
