Good Chaos, the U.K. production banner founded by industry veteran Mike Goodridge, has signed a first look deal with Searchlight Pictures.

The arrangement — which will see Searchlight develop and produce films alongside Good Chaos — comes during a period of success and growth for the London-based company, which last year saw two of its films shortlisted for the international feature Oscar in Baltasar Kormakur’s Icelandic romance drama “Touch” and Sandhya Suri’s India-set crime thriller “Santosh,” representing the U.K.

Fritz Wepper, the German actor who portrayed the German Jew Fritz Wendel in Bob Fosse’s Oscar-winning musical masterpiece Cabaret and starred in his home country on the TV series Derrick and For Heaven’s Sake, has died. He was 82.

Wepper died Monday in a Munich hospice after a long illness that followed the life-threatening sepsis he suffered last year, his family announced.

An actor since childhood, Wepper landed the biggest international role of his career in Cabaret (1972), where he appeared alongside Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem and Joel Grey. As Wendel, he passed as a Protestant and fell in love with wealthy Jewish heiress Natalia Landauer (Marisa Berenson).

David Mitchell is returning to the BBC for genre-bending detective comedy Ludwig, which features on a five-strong comedy slate alongside Hulu co-production Dinosaur and a show from The Duchess star Michelle de Swarte.

Unveiling his first major comedy slate at this afternoon’s BBC Comedy Festival in Cardiff, the corporation’s Comedy Director Jon Petrie said the shows reflect “the depth and range of our offerings which champion British creativity.”

The slate is led by Ludwig, Peep Show star Mitchell’s first BBC project since Upstart Crow, which follows the eponymous protagonist as he takes on the identity of his brother, Dci James Taylor, who has disappeared off the face of the earth. Mitchell’s Ludwig lives in quiet solitude, designing puzzles for a living under his nom-de-plume, and he struggles to adapt to being a twin who happens to be a successful Dci leading Cambridge’s busy inner-city major crimes team.

A pair of actors who hail from Cannes Film Festival award-winning projects — Anamaria Marinca (Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) and Jean-Marc Barr (Lars Von Trier’s Europa) — are teaming to star in a new film that marks an official collaboration between France and Ireland.

The project is White Friar and will mark the feature directorial debut of actor-turned-filmmaker Ivan Murphy. Described as a romantic thriller, White Friar is inspired by the life of Father Tom Murphy, an Irish Catholic priest who also served as a wing commander in the Royal Air Force during WWII and his relationship with Eva Hofer, a Hungarian Jew living in Vienna. Per the official synopsis, the film “examines morality, sexuality and identity.”

“Stranger Things” actor Brett Gelman is set to star in “Entitled,” a half-hour comedy series ordered at Showtime in the U.S. and Channel 4 in the U.K.

Created by Matt Morgan, the show follows Gabe (Gelman), an American widower who must get to know his British wife’s estranged family. In their crumbling gothic mansion in the English countryside, they compete for his affections — and his newly inherited fortune.

A co-production between Showtime and Channel 4 in association with All3Media International, “Entitled” is executive produced by Morgan and Gelman, along with Harry Williams, Jack Williams and Sarah Hammond of Two Brothers Pictures, the producers behind “Fleabag,” which Gelman was featured on alongside creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Tim Kirby is directing the eight-episode first season of the show and also executive producing.

Production on “Entitled” is set to begin in Manchester, England, in August. Showtime and Channel 4 are targeting a 2023 premiere for the series.

Bahman Ghobadi, the Kurdish-Iranian director whose “The Four Walls” has its world premiere this week at the Tokyo International Film Festival, wants people to watch his film on a big screen.

“If you watch it on a computer you might think that ‘The Four Walls’ is about a building,” he says. “But watching in the cinema you will be able to understand that it is a metaphor, to feel the different forces pressing in.”

The story, loosely based on Ghobadi’s own experiences, involves a man who works for years to buy a small home with a sea view and to have his family move in with him. Pablo Agüero’s Akelarre and Antonio Méndez Esparza’s Courtroom 3H will compete for the Golden Shell at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival (Ssiff), which runs September 18 to 26.

The latest project from Argentinian director Agüero, previously at San Sebastian with competition title Eva Doesn’t Sleep in 2015, is a historical witchcraft drama shot in Spanish and Basque.

Esparza also returns to competition, following Fipresci Prize winnerLife and Nothing More in 2017, with documentary Courtroom 3H, about a Florida court specialising in judicial cases involving minors. The previously announced competition films include five Cannes label titles.

U.K. broadcasters and producers have toasted the success of British talent at the Golden Globes.

With numerous wins on Sunday night, including multiple victories for Sam Mendes’ WWI movie “1917,” and TV series “Succession” and “Fleabag,” the Brits featured heavily in the roster of winners. Other British winners on the night included Taron Egerton, who scooped best actor for his portrayal of Elton John in “Rocketman.”

While Phoebe Waller-Bridge thanked Barack Obama in her acceptance speech, the BBC’s head of content, Charlotte Moore, paid tribute to the “Fleabag” star. Moore also hailed Renee Zellweger for her turn as late-career Judy Garland in BBC Films-backed “Judy.”

Japanese pay-tv outfit Wowow has picked up both six-episode seasons of “Fleabag,” which was written by Waller-Bridge and stars her in the title role as a woman trying to make sense of the relationships and life. The Emmy-winning show is on BBC Three in the U.K. and Amazon in most other international markets.

It is produced by Amazon and Two Brothers Pictures, which is backed by All3Media. It is distributed by All3Media International, which struck the Wowow deal ahead of the Atf market in Singapore.

The team behind hit drama series “The Missing” have expanded the universe, and Tcheky Karyo’s Julien Baptise is back in action. This time the French detective is helping a man (Tom Hollander) find his niece, a sex worker who has disappeared in Amsterdam. As with the earlier show, BAFTA-winning writers Harry Williams and Jack Williams created the series through their Two Brothers shingle. Ahead of launching on the BBC and being screened at the Drama Days event in Berlin, it has already sold widely and is set to light up schedules in 2019. Two Brothers’ head of drama and series executive producer Chris Aird lifts the lid on “Baptiste.”

Camerimage, the weeklong celebration of cinematography in Bydgoszcz, Poland, comes to a close today by handing out its prestigious Frog prizes. The big winner was South Korean drama “The Fortress,” which won the top prize, the Golden Frog, in the Main Competition. The film directed by Dong-Hyuk Hwang and lensed by Ji Yong Kim was a massive hit in its home country in late 2017 and has since been released in 28 countries, including the U.S., reaching 3.8 million viewers worldwide.

The competition jury gave the Silver Frog to cinematographer Łukasz Żal for “Cold War” and the Bronze Frog to director-cinematographer Alfonso Cuarón for “Roma.” With over 900 cinematographers from around the world in attendance, many voting members of the Asc, Camerimage is an important bellwether for the Oscar race for Best Cinematography. The silver and bronze prizes should be a big boost for the two black-and-white films angling for Oscar nominations.

Born during World War II, the future director got his first Brownie camera at age 7, and his first 35mm still camera at 10. By the time he turned 11, he was shooting 8mm films. “I didn’t want to play with my friends when I got home from school,” he recalls. “I immediately went to edit my films.”

After receiving diplomas from France’s two top film schools – now known as the Louis Lumiere school and La Femis – his teachers offered him up as an assistant to commercial producers, launching him into a career as director of more than 400 TV spots – after which he segued into feature films.

Europe’s mainstay fest for cinematography, newly rechristened EnergaCamerimage, launched its 26th edition and a week of 241 film screenings in the Polish town of Bydgoszcz on Saturday with a guest appearance by Roman Polanski.

The controversial but seminal director of classics such as “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Chinatown” took the stage to honor a longtime colleague, cinematographer Witold Sobocinski, with a lifetime achievement award for his luminous lensing. The pair, who shared stories from film school in Poland under the former communist regime, worked together in 1988 on “Frantic,” the Paris-set thriller starring Emmanuelle Seigner, now Polanski’s wife.

The master lenser also filmed “The Wedding” and the Oscar-nommed “The Promised Land,” both directed by Andrzej Wajda.

Fest director Marek Zydowicz credited Sobocinski with influencing a generation of cinematographers, noting he continues to teach at the Lodz film school that has set dozens of future directors and camera people on their professional paths.

As is annual tradition, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden has announced this year’s 25 film set to join the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Selected for their “cultural, historic and/or aesthetic importance,” the films picked range from such beloved actioners as “Die Hard,” childhood classic “The Goonies,” the seminal “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and the mind-bending “Memento,” with plenty of other genres and styles represented among the list.

Since 1989, the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress has been accomplishing the important task of preserving films that “represent important cultural, artistic and historic achievements in filmmaking.” From films way back in 1897 all the way up to 2004, they’ve now reached 725 films that celebrate our heritage and encapsulate our film history.

Today they’ve unveiled their 2017 list, which includes such Hollywood classics as Die Hard, Titanic, and Superman along with groundbreaking independent features like Yvonne Rainer’s Lives of Performers, Charles Burnett’s To Sleep with Anger, and Barbara Loden’s Wanda. Also making this list are a pair of Kirk Douglas-led features, Ace in the Hole and Spartacus, as well as Christopher Nolan’s Memento and more. ITV has tied with Amazon for the first time – commissioning a seven-part adaptation of William Thackeray’s Vanity Fair.

Mammoth Screen, the company behind ITV’s Victoria, and Amazon Studios will co-produce the 7x60-minute drama which is set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars and will star Olivia Cooke will star as the social climbing heroine Becky Sharp.

Thackeray’s novel, which was published as a serialisation from 1848, is to be adapted by Gwyneth Hughes.

Mammoth Screen managing director Damien Timmer will executive produce the series alongside Hughes, James Strong and Tom Mullens.

Doha Film Institute unveils spring 2017 grants.

Palestinian film-maker Annemarie Jacir’s upcoming dark comedy Wajib and Tunisian director Mohamed Ben Attia’s [pictured] new film Weldi have won funding in the latest round of grants from the Doha Film Institute (Dfi).

Unveiling its spring 2017 grants round during Cannes, the Qatari institution said it had supported 29 projects from 16 countries, with 80% of the selected projects hailing from the Arab world.Dfi CEO Fatma Al Remaihi highlighted the fact that 19 out of the 29 projects were directed by female film-makers.

“This year’s grants projects are even more special for the large representation of women directors as well as themes that focus on coming-of-age stories of central female characters,” she said.

“Stories of hope, self-discovery, women empowerment, tales of family life and of life in conflict zones are highlighted in the selections this Spring,” she added

‘The Crown’ star Jodi Balfour also joins six-part serial killer drama.

Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones) and Jodi Balfour (The Crown) will lead the cast of upcoming BBC One thriller Rellik.

Created and written by Harry and Jack Williams, the six-episode series will reverse the story of a serial killer, starting at the point in time they are caught and going backwards.

Dormer will play Gabriel Markham, a Met detective that obsessives over finding the serial killer while Balfour plays his partner, Elaine.

Described as a “bold, original and twisting thriller” by New Pictures Executive Producer Willow Grylls, Rellik (“killer” in reverse) was commissioned in 2015 after the success of Williams brothers’ The Missing, also for BBC One.
