low budget, but with unusual candor and bite

The Grail is a loose narrative incorporating the adventures of various denizens of the drug culture in North Carolina. In spite of its low budget and a lack of name actors it is funny and manages to invest real drama. From the tanked overbearing businessman who trades quips and entendres with a clever, bored waitress, to the yuppies who unwittingly set up a score with a foxy black policewoman, to two slackers who dreamily watch an attractive Swedish girl jog by every day and then are flummoxed and flustered when she winds up in their apartment, writer-director Kurt Volkan gives his characters strong dialogue and motivation and manages to tie the disparate elements of the story together nicely. Although lighter and more airy than similar ventures such as Go, The Grail is an extremely solid first effort from a filmmaker working from a very limited budget. Definitely worth a look.
